Hi Merry, how well you are doing! Ha ha, let’s send the ‘sugar police’ over to NZ and sort Mr Dumpling out. I like what you said about Joffy. We all ramble on and he just gets on with it, states the facts and moves on. I still wish you would reveal the loss Joffy. Or at least how many extra holes you have had to add to that belt.
Chat, I didn’t eat this much cauliflower soup until I started maintenance and got a bit lazy. It’s partly because I have to provide meals for OFMs that I like to keep my FDs easy. It sounds like Joffy’s the same and I know Cinque sticks to her miso soup on FDs. I also have some family favourites that I make on FDs, otherwise the family meal is an adaptation for them of what I’m having. When my OH was doing this with me, I made sure there was a lot of variety in our FD meals and tried to make it as interesting and appealing for him as possible.
Finally Chat, have you tried dancing? OH is out flying and I’m all alone. Dancing lifts the spirit, helps you keep fit and makes you feel good. All the better when I can play the music I love, dance without being told I look funny (in fact I’m a pretty good rocker if I do say so myself) and Lael, I can do it all in a vintage dress without being told I’m time-travelling!
I’m naked 5:2ing right now.
I had an egg and bacon roll and 3 small nectarines at Little Aths this morning and plan on a couple more pieces of fruit this arvo and then a yellow chicken curry dinner for my DD and I with a couple of beers whilst cooking.
Then on Monday I will be fasting again.
Had to do it, that joke was just hanging out there waiting for the person who could type the fastest.
Seen this Perth lovelies

Let’s not forget the naked happy dancing!
Now will you lot shut up about anything chocolate-ish, lollyish, pie-ish unless it’s a low cal one , and I haven’t got a clue about some of those other zingers you’re naming. I have recently been to what must be the home of pies, in Buena Vista, California, (in Silicon Valley) in a cafe which used to be called The Creamery, where probably a few billion dollars probably got organised, thought up, inventedor whatever, during the early years of the techie world. I have the pie photos to prove it. Anyway…..I know it’s Christmas, we’re all trending into Silly Santa Land…. but some of us have a low tolerance for reading about that stuff!!! Sort of the ‘If you hang around with tennis players you’ll end up playing tennis’ phenomena. And to get back to normal food…….my FD regular is 1 meal after 6pm and these days it’s miso soup with seafood, greens and a little carrot.
Chat, Thin is right, I found that soon after starting 5:2 my weight loss stalled longer than a normal plateau, till I gave up all starchy carbs. With a bit of experimentation I discovered that that included all the usual suspects plus pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, peas, corn, lentils, chickpeas, other beans used in vegetarian stuff. Pain in the proverbial! Even when the calories are equal, if these foods are in there the weight doesn’t go down. Take them out and it does. Took a bit of experimenting, but worth the effort.
Naked happy dancing clue: it usually happens in the a.m.
Merry
Hey, that’s great to read of the non-stop from Perth to London! My brother and family live in Ireland and I love to visit them! They suddenly feel a lot closer, even though I would still need to add on the time from the east coast to Perth.
dumpling, I live a half hour south of the Coolangatta airport, which isn’t Brisbane, but truly, it is just about city all the way from Coolangatta to Brisbane, so I now think of it as one big city! I guess in this way I could be seen to be living in one of the suburbs even though I’m just over the border into NSW!
Thin, yes! DD sounds perfect for your DD!
I’d been having a really rough time from that sleep deficit aftermath. Last night I decided to raise my 3 am ‘Circadian’ thyroid dose and has that done wonders! I woke refreshed and with a spring back in my step! My head is clearer, mood lifted and hunger dragon calmed. Of course being the day after a fast also helps!
Hi wwall
Thanks for sharing how much weight you want to lose.
I’m still not on top of this forum, so not sure when you started 5:2, nor what your starting weight or weight loss goal was. However, seems like you have about 25 kilos you want to lose from this point. I think it’s appropriate to have intermediate goals, as you have. Less daunting.
BTW, was at the dentist last week. Although my partner had forewarned me (he was there a week earlier), could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the receptionist. She’s gone from a size 16 to size 8 in just over a year.
She hasn’t done it via 5:2, but rather eliminating most carbs. Not the way I would want to do it, but good for her.
Anyway, good luck to you, and thanks for your comments.

Hi Joffy
Thanks for your comment re patience. Will remind myself that before I started I made a commitment to not worry about weight or measurements for the first 4 weeks. By that time (after 8FDs), I guess most people would see a difference.
Looking forward to the day when I smile every time I get dressed, as you say. That’s some motivation!
Hi Cinque
Yes, the minimal weight loss is frustrating, but I feel much better after reading some very supportive and positive comments from forum members such as yourself. Will definitely not give up. Come to think of it, I’m quite slow and steady in most areas of my life, so perhaps this is just another example.
Thanks for your best wishes. The same to you!
Hi Merry
Yes, will certainly hang in there. I like your comment that “itโs working, just not showing itself outwardly yet”. Thanks for your support.
Best wishes to all

Hi Thin
Thanks for the info about your cauliflower soup. I’m very lucky that I don’t have to provide meals for OFMs. My OH is the cook (he’s a much better cook than I am), and he’s also doing 5:2, so it works well. As he only needs to lose 4 or 5 kg, I guess I’ll be doing FDs on my own for some time, but expect he’ll be doing 6:1, so it won’t be so bad.
We do like miso soup, so that’s a good and easy option for FDs.
Yes, Thin, I do love dancing. Agree that it lifts the spirit, helps you keep fit and makes you feel good. When my OH puts on music whilst cooking I often jig around. So you’re a good dancer. Ha ha. I bet you are! I’m told I am, too. Anyway, great suggestion. Will do more dancing. Thank you!
BTW, what kind of music do you like to dance to?
Cheers

Hi Merry
Thanks for your input. Very interesting. As I think I mentioned, I do love carbs, but will restrict these on non-FDs. After last night’s meal (the day after a FD), I felt really full after eating my usual portion of potatoes.
Tonight, I ate half that amount, and felt much better for it.
When I think of it, the 10 kilos I lost over 8 months in 2002/2003 were a gradual loss, and (apart from stress) were a result of eating far fewer carbs than I do at home (I was overseas).
I do love the items you list, but will restrain myself and see what happens.
Thanks again.
Cheers

Hi Chat,
You don’t have to eliminate carbs as such. Just eliminate starchy veggies (ie potatoes) and carbs from grain based sources. So no bread, pasta, pizza, cake, biscuits. If the food came from a grain don’t have it. Get your carbs from veggies, legumes, nuts. 2000 cal of bread is not the same as 2000 cal of veggies.
Chat, Not sure if this takes your fancy, but hot cooked potatoes and cold cooked potatoes have a completely different type of starch. By cooling white potatoes, the starch converts into something called ‘resistant’ starch. What this means is that it is the cooling process binds the sugar all up into fiber that takes work for our digestion to undo which means that there is a very slow release of carb from a cold potato, just enough to sustain my healthy blood sugar level. Hot white potatoes dump simple sugars straight into the sweet spot at the beginning of our small intestine without need for any digestion. I have a glucose meter and definitely see a benefit in eating cold white potatoes over hot ones! My blood sugar doesn’t spike. So what I do is make potato salad with them when I fancy them. The other good thing about resistant starch is that it nourishes our gut biome which means it feeds the good bacteria in our intestine. Anyway, it is how I eat potatoes when I fancy them. Also, adding resistant starch to my meal reduces the glycemic load of the whole meal because of all the extra fiber I’m eating.
Here’s an article from the CSIRO about foods with resistant starch

Just a quick hello to everyone, I am up early finalising my YamDaisy Business Plan with all its cash flow estimates and best and worse case scenarios and graphs and all. Then up it goes on Yammer, and I have pretty much done all I can for the moment.
I have a meeting at 10 and then I will come home and decide whether I can make today a fast day! I am longing for a fast day, but I will put it off to tomorrow if I need to. I might be in the wrong mindset (depending on how the meeting goes).
But right at the moment I am so grateful for the opportunities life brings us, over the weekend I have had such wonderful help getting this all ready.
Back to proof reading now, and attaching appendices. Best wishes to everyone!
Well done Cinque, you have done so well to get this far, do hope it all goes well for you.
Great weigh in today after 2nd fast day of last week yesterday, 71.8 yay, finally under 72!! Lets hope I can keep it there….OH had to be really strict yesterday and have fluids only as he had a colongraphy this morning so I joined him too with a liquid only FD until around 8.30pm then had some yoghurt, strawberries, kiwi fruit, yum, obviously did the trick.
Fasting again tomorrow, happy day everyone,
Turn
Hi all
Very sadly I fell off the wagon the last few days. An unplanned busy weekend with lots of eating out with friends led to very poor food choices and the result that I could hardly get out of bed this morning to go to aqua as I felt so ordinary. I must add that no alcohol was consumed so it was a carb/sugar overload not a hangover!!
However, I learnt a very valuable lesson about how I have been feeling for the past few years and that I don’t have to drag a tired body around anymore. I didn’t realise how good I have felt over the past 10 weeks since starting this WOE and being very controlled about what/how I ate. I am restricting calories today in preparation for another FD tomorrow.
Chat, I started FD on 14 October at 93.6 kilos and am now down to 88.3. No doubt this weekend has caused some damage so I won’t weigh myself until I complete my 2nd FD on Thursday.
Thank you lael, Mango with Coconut Icecream
Yum!!!!!
I’m flying over….
I was 93.5 one night last week ( morning it was 92 so going with that as my start weight ) …want to be turnabout weight! But 79 would be OK
One week in for this woe….1.1 kilo goooooonnnnne now 90.9
Keep up the good work peeps.
Its great to sometimes remember why you are doing this (Wwal!)
Hello fellow fasters, today is my fast day, so far i have consumed the grand total of 40 calories, its 36 degrees here in Adelaide today, so drinking lots of water that seems to be doing the trick in filling me up.
Still not managed to weigh myself since i started this WOL, but i have lost 19inches from various parts of my body. I started this 9 weeks ago, only have approx 10kg to loose so i do know that it will take me sometime.
Also upped my exercise and practice yoga 6 hours per week, i really enjoy yoga it definitely helps doing an exercise that you enjoy, I am not daft and realise that I am never going to have the toned body that I had in my 20โs and 30โs but I do feel that with exercise and the diet I am not going to go into my 50โs like a Buddha.
Those treats were the reason I started 5:2 again. .cos they put 2 kilos on me. Grrrr but most have now been consumed
We hide the tin of quality street from the boy, so we can all enjoy it at Christmas …so that and my galaxy advent Calender ..THAT I HAVENT OPENED!! I know….I don’t know why either , maybe cos once it’s gone…ild have to fly to the UK for more galaxy. And half the terrys orange is left …
But otherwise its just normal kiwi stuff around. Like cooking chocolate !!
I’ll eat anything
Glad I swapped my fast day to Tuesday, as just made 20 gingerbread houses for teachers, neighbours etc ( they are small …ten cms high ) and I did partake…
Nicky 19 inches…you are disappearing, congrats ๐
( nicky is my real name..lol )
and why no excercise…lael, cos of your condition ?
Hi dumpling/Nicky, As you enjoy your Terry’s Orange and gingerbread, I indulged in raw cacao powder mixed in coconut butter with a few drops of stevia added in! …Spoons of it! …So I’m ready for my FD tomorrow!
I have to watch my limits with exercise because I’ve had what is known as ‘adrenal insufficiency’ which means that my adrenal glands struggle to produce enough hormones including cortisol which is a hormone produced in response to stress. If I over exert, I crash or experience what I call an exercise ‘hangover’. Today I walked 20 minutes to the beach and back. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow! I normally can do the exercise, it’s how my body responds the day after that lets me know if I’ve exceeded my limit. My hangovers include extreme fatigue, migraine, extreme sensitivity to light, brain fog and waking up in the morning as if I’d been hit by a truck. I took hormone replacement medication for this condition for 3 years and have since weaned.
Wow you poor thing and not knowing until the next day whether you’ve overdone it is a little scary because there’s nothing you can do about it until you wake up I guess.. and then you know it’s not going to be a good day
so sorry to hear that
I forgot to tell you after you told me where you lived ,18 years ago we flew over to Brisbane and hired a car and stayed down at Broadbeach to look at property because we wanted to move there we even went down to Tweed Heads which we really liked especially this new Resort housing estate they were building there with a large swimming pool complex and restaurant and Tennis Courts and we had lunch there and it was unbelievable we had nothing like that in Christchurch
and we also really liked Burleigh Heads it was kind of like Manly in Sydney about 50 years ago so we came back tried to sell our house didn’t happen had my third baby during that time and decided to wait and see what the new year was to bring and my husband decided to go to university so that kept us in Christchurch for the next 3 years then an extra year for an honours degree then an extra 15 months for teachers College… after graduating from teachers College we celebrated by going back to the Gold Coast and stayed at Nobbys Beach at Magic Mountain for a week and it was fabulous!!!
Anyway, resume normal transmission
Hello everyone,
I got my business plan up (thanks for explaining what it is about Lael!) and had a good meeting, but am still not sure how a good outcome can come. The Board meet tomorrow evening.
I did end up fasting yesterday Lael, so can just send good wishes to you fasting today!
I had some chicken and salad for lunch, but that ended up being all I ate for the day (apart from milk in cuppas).
I was surprised at how much I loved the feeling of being empty, especially in the evening.
Still very tired after having so few CFS symptoms over the last couple of months. So will take it easy today, and hope I bounce back a bit tomorrow.
Best wishes everyone, especially the Tuesday Fasters.
Good morning, just popping in. Read the posts every day but taking a break from posting but not the 5:2 still fasting two days a week. Everyone is doing so well I applaud you all, especially this time of year with all its temptations but we can still enjoy it all without the guilt.
Cinque I am in Melbourne for the next few days are you anywhere near Ferntree Gully?
Hi everyone, Fishing Gran and Intesha, good to hear from you both and how you’re both going,
FD for me today. Yesterday’s postponed. A special occasion over the last 2 days for someone close, so today’s the day. I have a Christmas function later today, so it will be interesting, but certainly do-able as a FD. Usual 2nd FD on Thursday. As Fishing Gran said it will be a very hot day here today so lot’s of no cal fluid today, water, peppermint tea, water, very weak Earl Grey tea, lots more water.
Onwards and downwards,
Merry
I’m having a peppermint tea this very moment ( albeit without a tea bag. Put two drops detorra in hot water)
Second fast day for me this week.
Got final school assembly at 1
Will eat just before, as its a long 2 hrs of stomach rumbling
Merry , I envy you…I couldn’t do a function on a FD.
That would be my idea of ‘ too much sacrifice !’
Hi all. Christmas parties so hard for us all. My two in a row gone by and the following fd with no increase in my weight, thankfully. Have any of you had a massage on a fd. After the massage, I peed all day, copious amounts, more than my fluid intake. Why would that be, was it the essential oils I chose, or the massage itself
With all the talk about treats, puddings etc, I thought I might tell you all about my paleo balls. Dates, nuts, coconut, orange juice, and some ground linseed. All whizzed to a paste. I eat one when I crave something sweet. They are filling, nourishing and full of fibre, and they are enough to stop me craving. There are and lot of recipes online.
Good morning all,
I had to change my FD to Tuesday as my parents were stopping over for the night on the way to Sydney and I had to have the obligatory beer with my dad. I cooked them a rack of lamb roast, even though it was a warm day, as they will have BBQ and salads plenty of days camping on the south coast.
FD went OK except for not being able to sleep so I threw on a boring movie at 11:30pm and that did the trick. (My secret to getting to sleep, the movie must be boring due to having seen it at least five times, no action, only a bit of comedy, this normally knocks me out within half an hour).
Meals for the day:
1 x white coffee 150kj, 500g of minestrone soup 800kj and 100g of kidney beans added to the soup 400kj, Total 1350kj or 322 cals.
*Note: I know I type in the same meals and numbers each post but I find this to be essential to me having to report to you all my intake on FD’s. The thought of having to write down extra kj’s to you guys stopped me having 100g of nectarines after dinner last night that I did not need but I walked past that bowl of fruit like a shark circling thinking about it for an hour after dinner.
Morning all
Weighed myself this morning after an incomplete FD yesterday – school concert and then dinner out meant I fasted for 12 hours during the day. However, glad to say the weekend blow out and other pressures have not caused too much damage as I weighed in at 88.2 this morning – 100 gms down from last weigh in. FD tomorrow and I don’t anticipate any problems going the whole 36 hrs.
Merry I also envy you – I couldn’t do a function on a FD at this stage, however it is something that we can work towards Dumpling!
Hi Intesha, sorry not to write quicker, I’d love to meet you in Ferntree Gully! I live close to Melbourne CBD, but the Dandenongs are my old stamping ground, and I would love to drive up and catch up! I’ve put my email address on my profile so let me know when you have it and I will take it off again.
I wonder if I could fast if I was doing something social…I’m thinkimg no. But I guess if someone said, you need to be there and if you eat or drink anything your kidneys will stop working FOREVER then maybe I could! So I guess it is a choice, like everything in life that you have control over . you have choices
But ild probably choose to indulge and so wouldn’t go/ would change my fast day!
Feel like I need a fast day tomorrow ( did Sunday and Tuesday ) but I have a dessert evening.
But my body is begging me.
Might start the day with a smoothie… rather than starting with four segments of Terrys orange today, then Hubby’s work do lunch , on way home grabbed a picnic, as Was getting fuel and 99 c
then two mince pies at home, bread, cake, five favourites … crapppppp really
Need some nutrients !!!
My body definitely appreciates fast days.
I need to thank my body more I think. Help it function and fullfil its creation better by what I put in my gob.
Well it is now morning and I guess it’s no point wasting type if you’re not going to actually go ahead with what you say you’re going to do so a smoothie it is
celery mint parsley orange lemon some boysenberries
I think there’s some strawberries in the garden carrot little bit of beetroot to cleanse my blood and anything else I can find in the fridge.. think there’s some tomatoes in there as well.. look out bowel
That sounds like a lovely smoothie Dumpling!
I’m fasting with you today!
I surprised myself by finding that I am quite happy fasting and socialising. I think that when I am being social I don’t appreciate what I am eating and drinking so much. Maybe I am a bit anxious, no I think I just am better concentrating on the people and making the most of my time with them.
And I got lots of practice by first being vegetarian for decades, so often there wasn’t much to eat. And before I got used to eating all the meaty things I cut sugar out of my diet and could eat even less of it all!
Also, when I have been out I often like to come home and eat something (something good like soup)while unwinding, so ok, maybe it is an anxiety thing. Oh I enjoy that quiet bowl of soup after a busy social time!
Had a good sleep last night, after a shocking one the night before when little 2 yo granddaughter was here.
No news from meeting, it is complicated so it may take a while.
Best wishes for a lovely day everyone
I wish I was fasting today but I’ve already done my two fasts and tonight I have a dessert night so I felt a smoothie first thing would at least set me upfor the Indulgences of the rest of the day haha!
We each have a country to bring dessert from… I picked America out of the hat ( easy!! Some got Korea, China , Samoa etc) so I thought I’d make an apple pie made them many times.. always works.. this time I thought I’ll cook the base a little bit before I put the apples in so it won’t be soggy
so I did that for about 8 minutes then when I put the apples in and then put the other pastry on the top the dish was so hot that it started melting the pastry all over the apples so you could see the apples.. the outline of them
Milk and a sprinkling of sugar made it more soggy
put it in the oven hoping it would rise slightly cos it’s sweet short pastry , total disaster so I’ve looked online and I’m making a peach cobbler that I’ve never made before and hoping this will be my Saving Grace tonight
I feel for you re anxiety. I don’t have it. Can eat and mingle NO PROBLEM. But maybe that is my problem! Too much eating.
If it is there …it goes in my Gob, even if I’m full.
haha Dumpling! But I don’t have trouble eating in social settings, it is more that I can’t do it so mindfully and appreciate each bite and notice how full I am getting, as my concentration is elsewhere.
I read your post too quickly re fasting today. But such a good idea to have a smoothie and be nicely set up for your world of desserts.
I’m another one who can make something well over and over again, and then oops something weird happens when I make it for an event! Murphy’s law. Good luck with the peach cobbler!
Good morning all,
Well done wwall! You are finding, like most of us, that 5:2 teaches us lessons over time. Falling off the wagon hasn’t been a wasted time for you because you’ve used the experience in a very constructive way. You’ve looked at what you’re doing objectively and you’re applying your new knowledge about yourself and how you operate with food in your daily life. This was a key thing for me in my 5:2 journey. I fell off the wagon many times, but each time I looked at why and how and kept working to change that over time. We each have an individual journey with food and it’s amazing what we can learn to do that we didn’t think we could Or didn’t expect we could. Your posts show that you’re doing really well. This is a challenging time of year for everyone because we’re often tired as well as facing many different celebration foods, so our resolve is tested. You will learn a lot over this season๐
Pin – when we lose through a FD water is released through the process, so some FDs can seem like we spend more time in the loo than others. Some even have the need to go several times in a night sometimes. For some people this extra urination happens regularly on a FD and for others it’s variable. The extra you talk about is most likely to be from it being a FD I think, and the massage and oils coincidental.
Hi nicky – you are going so well! Well done๐
Chatelaine- re the receptionist – that will be you in the future, and people will be going wow! Don’t worry about being on top of the forum. I’m not, and can’t be, and it’s not necessary to your successful 5:2 ing which is the most important thing. Just keep posting when you can, letting us know how you’re going, and asking whatever you need to ask to help you on your health and weight normalisation journey. Chit chat is entirely non-essential.
Hi joffy – you are going really, really well! As I said before I really admire your consistency. The forum is a good tool to use to keep us accountable and you’re doing this well. Many of us on 5:2 long term have a particular foods we have for our FD and find that regularity and repition just make FDs easier.
Lael – that information about the starch in hot and cold potatoes is very interesting. Next year I might do a personal trial on that one. I find things are so individual, so I experiment on myself, as I have some weird reactions sometimes. Foods that work for some people stall others or put weight on and vice versa. There seem to be more individual differences of how our bodies react to specific foods amongst us all than I expected. It’s been one of the fascinating things I’ve learnt on the forum over time.
