  • Hi Thin, thanks. Yes looking forward to catching up next week too.

Good morning everyone, it is quite an oppressive morning here. Very warm, grey, just a little movement in the leaves outside. A change is due in a few hours.

Nap I agree with you about Fast Day food needing a change with the weather! I am going to have to change my profile because I have stopped eating porridge and am not sure about my soups. It must be even worse when you are fasting more often.

The recipe thread looks good! I would love to add things – eventually! I take a long while to decide on things to share, as I think about taste, calories, availability, ease to make etc. (Otherwise I would share things that only I would make, and that don’t even fit the criteria. Sigh.)

Coast congratulations on your lovely downward trend (haha, I might be poetic sometimes, but not always! 😉 ), but truly, over 9 kg lost in two and a half months! Fabulous.

Belated happy birthday wishes! I have been too busy to post, but it seems you have given yourself the best birthday present.

Hi CM, it sounds like a wonderful 9 days in Bali.

I love having rocket and other greens in my garden and start my salads from there. I grew up with a limited idea of salad (iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, not even any dressing!)so I love expanding my mind of what they can be.
I love making salads very different from each other: Asian types, or Middle Eastern or African, maybe with only a few ingredients, maybe cooked or roasted nuts and seeds in them. I want to make a salad meal a really special satisfying one, but unless I plan ahead, or I’m in a particularly creative mood, I tend to go back to the one I grew up with (added bits and dressing!).

My Fast Day was yesterday, but best wishes to those who are Fasting today!

    Morning, everyone.

I wish I was more adventurous with salads, Cinque. I am like you and grew up on the iceberg lettuce, tomato and cucumber salad. I recall when I was young and went to a friends house – and they cut up cheese and put it in their salad. I had never heard of such a thing! I would love to hear about some of your salads, to make mine a bit more interesting. I do love salad, but just need a bit more variety.

FD again today. I am thinking of a vegetable slice I found on the other recipe thread. Can vegetable slices be frozen? I freeze quiche and it goes ok – but without the pastry base, I worry it will collapse in a puddle when I defrost it (especially with the mushrooms).

How is everyone going? Who is fasting today?

    Hi SH,

I buy my konnyaku noodles in Asian stores. They are so much cheaper than in Coles, so it pays to shop around. They are usually in the fridge. Sometimes they are in cute knotted bundles sometimes not – just go by the name which is written in English on the packet.

great recipes going up 🙂 can’t wait to try them.
FD today too counteract buffet last night.
I think it will be my last buffet – seafood was nice but I didn’t actually enjoy the whole experience – I was very full after the oysters, prawns and smoked salmon – the rest was just forced.

Hated the sweets – way too sweet – just had a taste ….. I think my palate and portion size has changed,

    Have a good day all,

    Coast

As this was a gaining week for me, I’ve enjoyed a sandwich for lunch and figure after the pot-luck tea for my Ma’s 70th on Sat, I will start again with a clean slate. I have a big baking/cooking day on Sat, but will try and not pick too much and eat lightly all day to minimise the damage.

I aborted a FD yest as there were just too many cakes and biscuits being thrown round work, and my “won’t power” just gave up, so an all round pretty unsatisfying week, but I’m remarkably at peace, and for once not feeling like I don’t think I can continue, (I had already fasted twice this week, so it was a bonus 3rd) just enjoy my days until the next FD – and start over. I’m looking forward to clocking up 6 months at the end of Oct, so now is not the time to lose my oooomph.

I sit with a group of girls for lunch, and at the start I got lectured on the importance of “not skipping meals” and “always eating breakfast” but I’ve discussed with a bloke at my work who has clocked up over a year, that we both kind of feel sorry for these people who don’t know what they’re capable of. And now nobody comments at all when I rock up with my cup of tea for lunch – and it doesn’t tempt me to eat either, watching others. It was 2 of my bosses that were in Brisbane for meetings that found there was heaps to eat at lunchtime because people in the office there were on FDs, so they both started and got me enthused and its been good having someone in the office to share small steps with.

I haven’t see the recipe thread but will take a gander over the weekend.

Have a great weekend one and all.

Enjoy the rest of your indulgences Nik and good for you for having such a philosophical attitude towards it all. You’ll be fine!

    Hi Naptime

I’m fasting today after birthday indulgences of cake, beer and pizza yesterday. Not mine. Having a water and coffee only day, then a vegetable soup for dinner. Gardening and walking today.

In my salads I put sunflower seeds and grated carrot, or thin slivers of carrot, celery, red capsicum, even red apple and then squeeze lemon or lime, plus quality olive oil, chilli flakes or pepper, salt. Then I can choose whether to add tuna, or eggs, or smoked salmon or cheese. Very tasty and filling.

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

Lime juice adds zing to everything Bay.

Mandolined fennel and orange segments is another varient to salad too.
Good weather for salads. Enjoy SHs. P

I read a lot of recipe books, and write down recipes I would like to try, but they are never salads, because I always want to make salads out of the freshest things around, and they never fit a recipe!

The biggest trick I have got is to make a really lovely dressing. Mine always have more lemon (or lime) in them than oil, and I love adding zingy things like chili or ginger. I also love garlic and cumin in them. Under-ripe mango is amazing grated (squished) into a salad dressing! In summer I tend to make some dressing (reusing a small vegemite jar to shake it up in – how very SH of me 😉 ) that will last for a week, and then have a salad a day.

The next thing is, if I want it to be a meal, to have something substantial in it. I have tended to carbs, which I know many of you need to avoid: but I do use complex carbs! low GI types eg brown rice, millet, barley, burghul, whole wheat berries, roasted vegetables.

Then some protein: boiled eggs, feta, tofu, cooked lentils or beans, ham, bacon, chicken etc (this is still if it is the whole meal)

And then I like to add a bit of crunch eg toasted seeds, nuts, croutons (home made) crisp pita bread.

I also think about whether to have everything sliced thin, or big chunks, or a chopped salad http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2015/04/29/chopped-salad-recipes-perfect_n_7161572.html?ir=Australia
or howabout this idea a French friend put me on to: http://www.tablespoon.com/recipes/rainbow-salad-in-a-glass/a0618d89-dfd2-4e1f-9739-90dda34fb253 she had a special word for it, but I can’t remember. I think it was about using leftovers attractively by layering them in a glass for delightful presentation.

**Edit (before my time ran out!) I found them LES VERRINES! http://www.jamieoliver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=33852#8qp3yVAGczDlXbDK.97 more elegant than salad in a glass! But that is what I simplified them down to since I don’t have chicken mousse etc!**

And I have learned to show a bit of restraint: my old way was to add every single thing I had in the house, but now I like to focus around an ingredient or two, and then use a different lot the next day: eg PVE’s orange and fennel, maybe with baked ricotta,
or roasted beetroot with feta and walnuts and rocket,
or boiled egg with red kidney beans and brown rice and spinach with a Mexican flavoured dressing.

That kind of thing. I am pretty good at it now, so long as I think ahead.
Hmm, I think salads will replace soup for summer Fast days dinners!

Can’t get rid of me that easy Thin. My Dad had a small op on Tuesday and has to have a catheter in until next Monday and obviously housebound. So I have been back and forth to the nursing home to see Mum most days as Dad goes every day.

Welcome back CM you have been missed. Belated birthday wishes Coast and welcome to our new recruits.

Finally after two weeks of going between 73-74kg, this morning 72.6. I have been adding Sunday’s for the last 6 weeks to my 2 normal FDs but didn’t make much difference. I think we tend to forget the stress we are putting our bodies under by changing habits of a lifetime and it is stubborn wanting to hold onto those extra kgs.

Have just bought two more size 12 Dresses and I am not usually a dress person, just loving this WOL.

My brother has just remarked how great I look and is now going to research 5:2. Last weekend I posted some photos on Facebook of my day out and I got some really great comments, one was I was looking really hot. Well for someone facing 65 in just over a week WOW.

My daughter gave me a website that has some really great salads, my favourite is earth bowl salad with smokey candied walnuts. It is delicious and can be adapted to suit anyone, iowagirleats.com. Not Aussie but I have made it several times and it is a meal on its own.

    Hi Intesha,

I just came back because I forgot to say to Nap that I laughed about her childhood shock of finding a family adding cheese to their salad – because the same thing happened to me! (And it was probably Kraft Cheddar Cheese!) I wonder if we grew up in the same suburb!

And then I got sidetracked checking out Iowa Girl. Her website was full of caramelizing apples so I googled her salads and got this lovely page: http://iowagirleats.com/2013/11/01/10-healthy-salad-recipes/ They are inspiring!

Yay for your lovely weightloss Intesha! And for those two new dresses!
Best wishes that your Dad is out and about again soon, and that you aren’t run ragged.

Hi Cinque, yes there are some amazing salads, just a few more ideas to throw in the mix. Some of you are so creative but others need inspiration like me who just stick to the tried and true simple recipes.

Ah Intesha, I’d love to see that FB photo. Do you remember posting your email address so Merry and you could meet for coffee? I remembered it because it’s presumably your name. Is it OK if I use it to contact you?

I love those flavours of ginger, lime & chilli too. In the UK we only had ‘salad cream’ when I was growing up. Then I lived in the USA where the choice of salad dressing seemed a bit absurd. Especially as the salad veggies there taste so very good. Then we moved to Australia where it was back to the salad cream option. These days we can get anything in Oz – but all I want is a squeeze of fresh lime.

Thin of course you can use it that is my backup email if I want to remain mysterious.

Hi Intesha. Great to hear from you and your amazing losses. I remember when you didn’t think you’d ever get below 80!! Now you’re staring down the barrel of the 60s…won’t be long girl – well done. Have bought a few dresses myself. Glad they’re all starting to notice the new you! Hope you’re Dad is on the mend. x

Naptime – re freezing egg dishes. Someone told me if you add flour to the mix that helps when reheating from frozen and the “seepage” factor…..delightful word! Also heard its best to reheat from frozen in the oven and to avoid nuking in microwave as it make the ooze problems worse. Something to do with it changing the protein structure. Hope that helps you out.

Well look at all the amazing salad suggestions. Fab. I love them and even in winter I still had my salads. One thing I love to add is fresh herbs from the garden…..why are they sooo expensive in the supermarket?? Some basil, coriander, oregano or garlic chives….whatever you feel like chucking in. Ah, the good old “plastic” kraft cheddar, remember it well!

FD for me today, you guys motivated me to get going again. Thanks. Well, its almost done and dusted now anyway. Big party tomorrow. Must try and be good. Have a lovely weekend guys. CM xx

A beautiful day. Birds calling like anything at daybreak (Miso the cat couldn’t wait to get outside, but I made her!). There s a long cane of roses arching over the wall just outside my kitchen door. Dark red roses, they look fab.

I’m wondering whether to make this another Fast day or just a small meal, no snacking day. I think I might as well Fast.

But I have soup in the fridge, so I won’t make one of those amazing salads today!

Don’t women get a lot of flack for what they eat or don’t eat! I remember reading ‘Fat is a Feminist Issue’ (http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Feminist-Issue-Susie-Orbach/dp/0099481936) back in the …. well it was probably early 80’s when I read it. A lot of the things in it are common ideas now, but it was really new and powerful then. All about the social issues around women and their bodies. I am glad you have some nice camaraderie at work now Nik!

Oh dear, I have got so much I need to do today, I will see how long I can stay on this site chatting away, drinking morning cuppas, until I have to make myself go.

Happy lovely healthy eating today people! Make sure it is delicious!

Morning, everyone. I hope you are all having a great weekend.

Thanks CharliesMum and Cinque for the salad ideas. They all sound yummy, and hopefully next week I will broaden my salad horizons a little.

The vegetable slice was really yummy and I was able to have a big slice for FD. I will add it to the Recipe thread, as it was so nice. Me being me, I forgot to add the bacon (which is why I could have a bigger slice as the cals were a lot lower) – but I liked it that way, as I prefer to not eat meat if I can.
Thanks for the refreezing hints, CM. I didn’t freeze what was left in the end, as I think it will be nice for lunch today.

I managed to get some of the Splendier noodles. I bought a rice and angel hair to try, but still want to get to the Asian shop to get the konnyaku noodles.

Weigh in this morning – down 100g from last week. Not the best, but considering I did bounce up in weight 600g or so after last weekend due to the junk food, I did ok. I wish with the three FD a week it was a bit more, but it was my own doing. It should teach me that the junk just isn’t worth it!

    How is everyone else doing?

    Hi SH,

    signing in,

good FD yesterday to counteract birthday buffet on Thursday.
managed to get back to last Mondays FD weight; not quite down to Wednesdays yet. Went up .3kg – not bad considering 🙂

Exactly Cinque, love your thoughts and appreciate your link – will check it out later. The cane of red roses sound devine. I have Birds of Paradise blooming all around me – lovely orange and purple.

CM, enjoy your big party today 🙂 It’s nice to have you back.

I enjoyed reading about the varied (or is that not so varied) salad dressing options of the past – we have come a long way with all the influences from all over the world. We are so lucky.

Intesha, love that you are getting into the dresses again. I can hardly wait as well. So good that people are starting to notice the changes that are happening for you.

I agree Thin, the best dressings are the simple ones – lime or lemon and maybe a splash of balsamic.

NikT, that is so good to have others around who know what this WOL is all about. As you said, that is helpful in the work place as often that’s where the temptations are.

hello to everyone and hope you all have good days whether FD or NFD,
    anyway must get moving,
big weekend with family celebrating more birthdays 🙂

    signing off,
    Coast

ps I added the interesting salad webpage links to our FD recipe page, hope you don’t mind

Morning all, I have now seen ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of Intesha and I can tell you she looks really hot in her new size 12 dress. What a transformation, no wonder her brother and others are starting to comment. A whole new you in so many ways Intesha, you’ve done a great job in often difficult times. You can enjoy your 65th birthday with confidence.

We’ll form our own fan club Thin, you have done amazingly. When I get to your level it will be something to really brag about.

Our minds are marvellous machines but also our worst enemies. Why can’t we believe what we see. The top I have on in the before pic I only bought last June, seems like years ago, it is an XXL, my size 16 summer trousers are now hipsters and I can take them off without undoing them. WHY am I hanging on to them.

CM, it is so hard to believe that I am nearly 15kg down. It’s just mind boggling.

FD tomorrow, as I said I am now doing 4:3 whenever possible but it hasn’t made a great deal of difference yet!!! Which is disappointing on the scales but the measurements are a different story.

Intesha, I sorted all my clothes into sizes 18, 16 & 14 a while back. I sold some designer skirts on ebay, took some things to the Salvos and today I’ve made a bulk sale on gumtree to a lady who’s transitioning from sz 18 to 16 (lapband surgery). As I never expected to see size 12 let alone size 10, I did buy quite a lot of new size 14 clothes last summer. It’s a shame to throw them out already but I’m never going back and this is part of the process. It’s so cleansing to say goodbye to the rent-a-tent clothing. I love that dress you’re wearing with the little red bolero cardigan showing off the new Intesha. Chat tomorrow for Sunday fasting then.

I managed to lose another 1.2 kg this week dispute all the distractions. The temptations from country shows not good. Now down to 68.2 kg. For months I struggled in the high 70’s then following this program since August it has just fallen off. Main goal is to get waist under 80cm.

It helped doing a lot of physical work in the garden. I tried to dig a garden bed but was had too much clay. I then had to use a hoe which took about four hours. I still have another 2 metre bed to do today. Once this gets done then I can finish putting in the rest of the camellias in which will give me a screening hedge. I am getting plenty of lettuces from the garden. The summer vegetables are coming along nicely. The tomatoes are flowering which is very early for this area. You are lucky to get any before Christmas. I will be glad when most of the major yard works are done so I can get back to normal gardening.

Hello, what a grey still morning it is here, full of pigeons cooing.
The spring flowers are great, I have seen the gorgeous Birds of Paradise in bloom around here.

GL502 my waist just got below 80cm this month. I feel like I have a waist. I hope you make it soon!

I snuck in my third Fast Day this week, which was nice and easy. I know I don’t stick to 500 calories on Fast Days, I am more like 650, so I need the extra one now and then to make up for it. Thank goodness it is working for me, because I haven’t been able to manage without my usual cuppas which must add a cup of milk over the day. That is what makes the extra.

How frustrating Nap and Intesha that 4:3 isn’t showing on the scales. I hope they catch up soon!

I hope you had a wonderful party CM!

Nap your vegetable slice sounds great. I fancy that now. I wonder if it would make a good breakfast on Fast Days? I also think it would freeze, but I would leave out potato (have a feeling it didn’t contain that anyway!!!!!) and mushrooms as I find both of them disappointing once they have been thawed.

I have got out my summer clothes and it is interesting trying on things that I haven’t worn at this weight, or at all, and get the fun of deciding whether I really like them on me or not. The Op Shop has been getting lots of donations!
I hate the feeling of trousers that are too big for me (even though I love the novelty!). Oh dear, rent a tent exactly describes my old clothes!

I hope you get a lovely lot done in the garden GL! Mine is a tiny garden in the apartment block foreground, but I do have two tomatoes that are growing well!

Best wishes to everyone for a good day!

    Hi everyone!

    Gee it’s good
    To be back home again!
    Channelling John Denver……….

Hope everyone is well, and will catch up a bit over the next couple of weeks., just read this page for today. Intesha! Amazing 72’s! Well done! Hope your dad is looking up soon. Looking forward to seeing those pictures.

Have been happily travelling for 5 weeks and home last night, after a couple of flights. Very happy to get off that 2nd plane.

Results: Ta da, drum roll please…. Left Oz at 68.6 and this morning 69.1, so up 500 gms. And a week ago I was 1.3 kgs less than that, so if I hadn’t spent a week in Amsterdam (think chips in paper cones with some sweet sort of mustard dressing, various sweet, wheaty things, etc and hadn’t eaten too much on the plane……… You know how that goes.

Travel scales worked really well! Much borrowed by other inmates on the river cruise and while in Turkey. Both on the Turkish trip and on the river cruise peopke got used to me not going to breakfast/OH going on his own, and doing FD’s. Various other people have tried FD’s, and at least one lovely older Canadian lady, who desperately needs to lose a little weight for health reasons but couldn’t no matter what, has gone home ready to start. Her OH researched 5:2 while we were travelling. Go Gloria!

Our 50 yr old guide in Turkey, who put on a great deal of weight after the death of his mother 6 months ago, was going to do 5:2 and rang his doctor to check in with him while on the trip, but he is diabetic, so his Dr has cautioned him about doing it at this point. But, we discussed some other strategies for him to check out, to try to get back down some to where his newly acquired diabetes lets up, then go on 5:2 for the rest. My OH has him on a promise to send a photo in 1 yrs time. Turkey has lots of lovely fresh food and salad vegetables, so hopefully he will take up some of the strategies, like eating in an 8 hr window, and targeting foods with lower glycaemic indexes. ( Is the plural of index, indexes, indexs, indeci, indecis…..) you can see my brain is all over the place this morning………sigh…….my version of tiredness……

I did 8 well done FDs and decided not to continue part way through the last 2 FDs before coming home. Weighed every day, ate in a smaller window 11am – 8 pm, ate lower cal, low GI as much as possible. That said, I always ate what I chose to eat. I tried all sorts of food, including grain foods if they were something new and national/ regional specialties etc. often chose seafood, kept cakes, desserts etc to a minimum, but still tried everything I wanted too, including repeats on other days if I really liked something. Very hapoy traveller! I’m convinced that if I’d wanted to I could have come home with a couple of kg off., but I decided my goals were twofold – to try all I wanted to try, to come home the same weight. Didn’t decide on the same weight/weight loss decision till I was in Turkey, but that was cool too.

We were in Amsterdam for a week, and I was getting quite tired there. Walking in many places on cobbles yet, and managing the traffic!!! was tiring. Never seen such insane traffic – split narrow roads, canals, bike tracks with 2 lanes, a gazillion bikes with motor scooters in the bike lanes, trams, buses, cars, motor bikes, pedestrians and bikes in huge numbers and everywhich way, traffic on the wrong side of the street meant even looking for traffic was looking the wrong way, and bicycle bells will appear in my dreams I’m sure. Every variable of transport constantly narrowly missing each other by a few cms. Was just getting the hang of it when we left! We also spent a few a couple of nights there with a couple from our river cruise, who we really liked , so got together for dinner at a restaurant a couple of nights before they went home, and just ate what I liked off the menu.

Overall, healthwise on my trip, I am so, so happy. CFS and travel do not really go together, and so is very problemmatic. Despite 2 x 2 week back to back tours, which I was rather fearful of, and never done before, I did really well. I walked mostly at a normal pace. Only had 1 day where I went with the slow group in Europe, and in Turkey, it was stairs and heat that caused me to rest more a couple of days. Not eating breakfast allowed a bit more sleeping too. One day I had to run a bit, in run, walk, run, walk style, so the boat didn’t leave without me, but I ran a bit for the 1st time in 17 yrs! And danced for a while about 3 nights for the 1st time in 17 yrs also. Both reqired resting more and earlier night the bext day, but before 5:2, that would have caused a full on CFS crash, which isn’t pretty. In other words, I felt more like a normal person than I have for 17 yrs. At 65 I never thought It would feel like that ever again. Very happy 5:2 user here!!

Must go, time to unpack and wash, and sleep some more.

Hugs to everyone and welcome newbies,
    Cheers,
    Merry

Welcome back Merry and what an inspirational account of your trip that is, only gaining 500gms gives me so much hope. You are so strong. I can tell you that I could never skip a breakfast that was included in the price especially if the OFMs were enjoying it! Consequently, none of our upcoming accommodation includes breakfast and most of it is self-catering. My plan is to do one full fast day a week and be mindful all the time while enjoying new tastes. I’ll copy and paste your account to read again before I go too.

GL, congratulations to you too on your success. Cinque and GL, did you measure your waist around the smallest part or over your belly button? I also had a goal to get below 80cm (I’d read somewhere that being below 80cm lowered your risk for a lot of diseases) but it isn’t happening if I do it over the belly button……

    Hi SH,

Welcome home MMe. What a wonderful trip and a wonderful result. Well done!! You had a really good attitude , that most certainly contributed to successful outcome.

Cinque, congratulations on getting under 80cm for your waist. A great achievement.

I can’t wait to start getting rid of clothes, Thin and Cinque. Holding onto old big clothes has been one of my ‘setting myself up for failure’ decisions in the past. I will definitely let go of ‘my old self’ as I go through this journey as there is no way I am going back this time :))

GL, must be all that gardening. You did well considering the temptations.

Go Intesha, 15kg gone!! so good…..

Nap, you too are also on that downward trend, so it seems to be going well. Yes, those choices that don’t help are soon replaced after trial and error in this WOL – though we can control when we have some treats.

I was going to go for an FD today to counteract the birthday celebration yesterday but I caved in at 10.30 to have a lovely snack from the leftovers. All good though. Tomorrow is my actual FD so will tackle any damage done then 🙂

    Happy days for everyone,
    Coast

Oh no! you devilish SH’s! Making me face reality! 🙁
I checked my measurement using my belly button and I am 82cm. Boohoo!
    Ah well, maybe next time!

Lovely to hear your travel stories Merry! Have a lovely leisurely unpack!

We were brought up to always clean our plate (big family, not much money, good basic food, it wasn’t a problem) and not to waste anything. I had to really turn my brain around to allow myself to leave food on my plate. It is still hard work!
And always envious of special food, and others having something I didn’t, I also know the difficulty of saying no while others are having fun. And of saying no to free food, or food that is included in the price!
That one is much easier for me though. I get a lot of pleasure of being in control of what I do and don’t want to eat. It must also help that my bad health (CFS like Merryme) makes me housebound enough so I am not often in tempting surroundings, but when I am I would rather concentrate on the people and the experience, rather than eating food. But it also makes me feel like a rich person to say, I can eat that food, but I choose not to!

I have more trouble when I am home and can’t do a lot of things I would like to do, or should do. Fasting is good because it puts the eating option in the ‘not today’ basket. And I am now more sensible on the Non Fast Days too.

It is a lovely sunny quiet Sunday afternoon, I might go for a little walk. Cheers everyone.

Beautifully summed up Cinque, I can identify with so much of what you wrote. 82cm round the belly button is something to celebrate, mine’s still 90cm.

Enjoy those birthday leftovers Coastcat, you deserve them. 11am and I’m going well, intake 11 cals so far.

Way to go Merry, see Thin it’s not that hard LOL. I always have an eat fest when I am overseas but I am not going to worry about it. Life is to damn short and I might surprise myself as well, I don’t seem to crave all those cream cakes etc. I actually feel sick if I do, never thought I would be saying that. Many a time I’ve bought a large apple turnover with cream and scoffed the lot.

Merry which way did you do the river cruise? I’ve just had friends come back this week, they did Amsterdam to Budapest.

Thin 2.15 here in good old Sydney, just about to have my protein shake which will make 95cals.

Do you have some travel plans coming up Intesha? I agree, our tastes have changed. Friends were over for dinner telling us about how they went to the bakery every morning in Portugal to try different pastries for breakfast (gained a fair bit of weight by the look of their middles too). I just kept thinking, yuk, that just doesn’t sound good at all. I know it’s famous for its pastries but the OFMs can go and do that & I’ll brew some fresh ground coffee and sit on the balcony admiring the river view feeling smug. That’s the plan anyway, the report will follow.

Yes Thin I am going to the UK for Xmas and new year. Leave here on the 16th December back 4th February. Having a few days stopover in Dubai on the way back just to physc myself up for what ever is waiting at home.

Off to Melbourne next Friday with a friend who also turns 65 soon. We have another friend who lives there and we are going to have a girls weekend and catch up.

Oh of course, how could I forget that trip to the UK. What’s happening to your Dad during that time? You certainly deserve a break. So, you’re flying Emirates? We’re going with Etihad this time. Abu Dhabi is their hub, we know it well but we’re not stopping – instead we got ‘hot seats’ with a bit of extra leg room as a treat. Enjoy your time in Melbourne with the girls. More high teas?

Thin unless there is no option I’m an Emirates girl through and through. I will probably do a day trip to Abu Dhabi to see the improvements it’s been a few years since I was there. Just loved the Sheik Zayed mosque.

No high teas but lots of other treats…….including liquids (champagne)

Good morning everyone, I’m first up!
It is a lovely morning here.
Thanks Thin! Yes an 82cm waist is celebrated! It used to be over a metre!
A normal food day for me, I am planning to fast tomorrow.
I hope you all have got a good day planned out with lovely food in whatever quantities suit the day!

I am absolutely disgusted. I weighed myself and have put on 2.5kg in 2 days!! What is going on? I didn’t have any chips or chocolate and didn’t eat anything in between meals. Yes, we made home made pizzas, but I kept my ingredients to mainly vegetables and the light cheese.

Feel like utter crap, now. I have pretty much undone all my FD work. And I can’t say ‘well, I ate so much, it is no wonder’ – because I don’t feel like I did.

It is going to be a very tough FD today, as I am back to wondering why I even try.

Sorry, just had to get that out :-(.

    Blame the scales Nap!

Naptime I have been there too, so disappointing. Could it be hormonal water gain? Or have you had an extra salty meal in the last day or two. Those things do nasty things to my scale reading.
And crazy but true, I find I sometimes lose more on a 5:2 than a 4:3 week…there are so many variables.

I just looked at your history, you’ve lost 25kg in less than a year!!!!! You know all this stuff backwards. I have also come from a calorie counting program (WW) to 5:2, and I do think it takes a while to adjust (I’m still adjusting and had a big weekend of cocktails and eating out) but it’s the life-long perspective I’m trying to focus on. Back to fasting today. Hope that helps somehow, we’re in this thing together.

Morning all. I’m back! My one week away turned into two weeks away and then I spent last week recovering from being away! I have not logged on since September and have just seen how many posts I need to catch up on so I will try. Sorry, if I don’t get to read them all but I have skimmed through some and seen highs and lows and newbies.

Today is my first fast day in three weeks and I am sitting on 65.05. The first week of not fasting, I remained the same weight, the second week of fasting I actually lost some weight (although felt like I had put some on) and the third week of not fasting I did put on a couple of kilos.

So, moral of the story is – keep at the 5:2!!

Thin – did you decide to drop to one a week or stay at two? I have been thinking of you and CM. I will try and not disappear for so long next time.

All the best to fellow Monday fasters. xxxx

Have to say I am quite excited that my darling husband has decided to start 5:2, beginning today! Not sure what prompted this but it doesn’t really need analysis – I am so happy he’s making this change for his health, hoping he can get off the GERD pills, and reduce his BP and sleep apneoa.
We talked it through on the weekend and he’s fasting with me today. I suggested that he commit fully to 5:2 until Christmas and reassess how he’s going with it, so hopefully he will do that and really start to feel the benefits by then.

Welcome back EA, hope you enjoyed your little trip and time off. Nice to hear from you. Just in case you’re heading to the big apple this week, we’re meeting for coffee in South Perth on Wednesday and of course you’re invited. I had meant to email you but hadn’t got around to it. Glad you’re back. I’ve stayed at 2 fast per weeks and have been stable between 60 and 61kgs for a couple of months.

Good news MWKaty, all the best to your OH – and if you can both manage to keep fasting throughout the dreaded Christmas season, you might find as I did last year that you stay the same weight (about 70kgs I think it was for me), while enjoying mince pies and everything I love at Christmas. In the past, I would gain about 3kgs over Christmas so I was thrilled. Just something to think about so you don’t reach a great weight and then undo all the effort!

Naptime, you probably won’t want me to say this but could it have been the pizza crust? If I ate pizza, I’d be looking at a 1kg gain. Don’t lose heart. Have another look at the nonFD foods and just keep going – as the others said above, there could be absolutely reason for it other than food in transit, water gain, temperamental scales – did you try jumping up and down on them?

    Hi Naptime

In support of what Thin wrote, as soon as I eat anything at all with wheat in it, eg pizza crust, I put on 1-2 kg. The purists will say that’s not possible. However, I have kept detailed records of food eaten, weight loss or gain, exercise, etc for the last 21 months, and I can say that eating wheat causes weight gain for me.

Eating any type of WHEAT is a NO NO for me if I wish to keep weight off.

The good thing is that if I have 2 days wheat free and mostly sugar free, then the very same weight falls back off. 😉

    Merry

Congratulations on maintaining while away. Super job given all the temptations. We went on the river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. There was so much food that I didn’t eat any of the lunches. Made good food choices for breakfast and dinner. Loved the pretty cobblestone towns in Germany and Austria, Croatia and Slovenia. Amsterdam was a shock after the loveliness of other parts of Europe.

    Cheers, Bay 🙂

Morning all you wonderful 5:2ers!! Happy Monday.

Cinque, you painted a picture of those roses….just lovely. Sorry about your waist!

I love your thinking Thin, “never going back there”…..I’m with you. When do you guys leave for Spain?

Well done GL for breaking through to the 60s…such a familiar story with the up/down/up, and then the weigh dropping off fast.

Merry, a huge welcome home. I been thinking of you on your trip. Well WooHoo to you…only 500g up. So, so happy that 5:2 allowed you to “live” for the first time in 17 years….how motivating is that and being able to try everything you wanted. You Go Girl. Hugs back. xo

Intesha, 15kg gone! Congrats. Think of how we both were this time last year?? If you’re flying Emirates you’ll probably be on the A380….ab fab. We went with them to Europe in May – it was amazing.

Aww Nap, don’t despair, love. It’s probably the carbs. I can’t do them at night anymore either. Another thing to think about is the ‘light’ cheese. You probably know all this stuff, but for others, ‘light’ often mean reduced fat (i.e. flavour) but increased sugar and salt…..so it tastes of something. As many of you know I’m a huge believer in food that hasn’t been “messed” with. Full-fat everything for me and I just have a bit less. Anyway, 25kg gone in less than a year is something to really celebrate and you should be soooo happy at such a major achievement. Fabulous. x

MWKatty, well done on getting OH to join in.

EA – Welcome back. It takes a bit of time to adjust to getting home doesn’t it? Glad you’re back too. We’re meeting for coffee on Wed in South Perth if you can make it. We know its difficult for you though.

    Hi Bay, well said.

FD for me today. Stir fry vegies tonight, with a little bit of chook and lots of garlic chives, ginger and chilli…might chuck in some Slendier too just for the hell of it! Anyway, for everyone else fasting today, good luck and have a fabulous one. CM xx

Good point about the light cheese CM. I’m definitely coming round to your way of thinking about eating foods that haven’t been ‘messed with’ as you put it. Low fat products = increased sugar & salt. Are you fasting when we meet on Wednesday or changing to Thursday? Just asking because I don’t want frothy coffee envy. (I know Freya will be bringing something oily-looking to put in hers that I don’t think will cause me much concern. 😆 )

Thin, you know me…..I’ll be having one (or two!) full-fat flat-whites! So you’ll definitely have coffee envy! Yes, Freya can keep her coconut-oil-slick coffee all to herself….but whatever lights your fire!! I’ll probably change my FD to Thu as well.

Full fat coffee date it is then.

Thanks for the support, everyone. I don’t know if it can be water or salty food, MWKaty. Who knows? Yes, I lost 25kg, but it has stalled since June – I was thinking I would have lost closer to the 50kg by now, after a year. Not the same place I was mid year.

Anyway, OH sat next to me this afternoon, and ate chocolate. And I was still so mad, I didn’t want any! I guess anger is sometimes a good thing.

No Thin, I didn’t jump up and down in the scales. I was tempted to throw them at the wall however – does that count? It must have been my eating, that’s all. I just don’t think I can let up on being strict with myself – at least for the foreseeable future.

It is another FD day – and I guess we just have to keep trying.

How is everyone else doing? MWKaty, that is great news that your OH is joining you on 5:2. I hope he sees results that make it worth him continuing. After I lost the first chunk, I was able to stop the GERD and the cholesterol pills – which were bonuses I hadn’t thought of.

Nap – It must be really frustrating not to have had any weight loss since you started 5:2 last month, but there must be a reason for it….because this really does work. I was an unbeliever at the beginning too….it just seemed too easy.

So where to begin?? Maybe if you start counting cals on your NFDs – not forever, just until you get a handle on this. I tried to keep to 1200cals or thereabouts on most NFDs, because I wasn’t losing as fast as I wanted. It worked for me & it was that kick along that my body needed. I also used to add a FD on a Fri if a big weekend was ahead, to counteract it.

Around this time, I realised that I was doing this for my health and it would become a WOL. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but through the fabulous support on these pages I changed, as did my tastebuds. I started to look for things that I could eat if I was hungry and got the munchies. Those 5.30pm peanuts were the first to go, so I started having celery. Now I don’t even think about them and only have the celery occasionally. Chips were a habit on weekends too…now gone (well almost)! Long story, short – I’ve cut out the rubbish, because otherwise I knew I would go right back to where I began.

**Ditch the carbs. Yes, I thought this was rubbish, but it’s not. I would be having rice and pasta at night – cutting down on the sauces because I thought that was the problem. Nope – it was the white stuff! So for me, once breakfast was finished, no carbs – and the weight started coming off. Some of us don’t eat them at all.

Intesha (who loved her high teas!) had a similar problem and look where she is now. Perhaps she can chime in to explain her experiences.

Nap, you’re halfway to your goal and we’re here to support you in any way we can. It’s always the first stage of 5:2 that is challenging and takes a bit of time to get your head around it all. Once that light-bulb-moment happens, it’s a breeze.
Look at all the positive outcomes on this thread. We are living proof that this works and it doesn’t cost a cent.

You CAN do this. We KNOW you can. CM xxoo

Suddenly, all these other posts have come up that weren’t there when I responded before!

Re. Cheese. I go by the cals content with everything I put in my mouth. I have found that many things that are light are not, but I thought the cheese was a genuine lighter alternative? I use the Bega So Extra Light and Tasty. Pretty much no taste, but sometimes I need to fool myself into thinking I am having cheese.

Re. Carbs. I don’t know much about carbs, to be honest. But it was interesting to hear how so many of you find carbs to be such an issue. Bay, you said wheat free, is it the wheat itself, or the gluten in it? Do gluten free products have the same affect as non gluten free?

I will have to do some research into carbs. I used to exist (the first six months of the strict 1200cal/day diet) on Mountain Bread (like really thin wraps but only 70cals) with salad for lunch. When I got to the half way point, I realised how much I missed bread, and so started having bread for lunch. The reason I tell you all that, is maybe you all have a point.

Can you direct me to some good links about carbs? I haven’t really ever looked at carbs before, just fats and sugars.

Yes, CM, I am going to be counting cals again everyday. Just to get back on track. I have gone from weighing absolutely everything, to having non FD where I am assuming I am still on track. So, weighing everything again, and sticking to 1200 cals for a while hopefully will hopefully kick it up a notch.

Thank you all so much. OH was flabbergasted that I burst into tears this morning over it – but you all seem to understand. I am so very grateful for all your support.
