  • Hi all.

Had my first fast yesterday. I found it quite tough.

I used all my calories for one main meal in the evening after work. I did develop a bit of a headache and feel light headed before I ate. Had a bit of trouble sleeping as well 🙁 I felt hungry but not ravenous.

I woke up this morning pleased that I had lasted the previous day and not that hungry to be honest. However by the time I had eaten my breakfast, the hunger pangs took over and I ended up having an early lunch.

I kind of feel a bit ‘hung over’ today I have a very slight headache and feel a little spacey. This feeling is gradually going as the day goes on. My biggest concern is that I will overdo it today and pig out a bit. I have been alright so far and not eaten anymore than normal for a weekend.

This is the first time I have ever eaten like this and it feels alien. I am going to give this woe my best shot & have my fast days planned for next week. I have around 6 stone in total to loose so I am hoping by the end of 4 weeks I see a 7 lb loss.

    Hi @hopeful_ Welcome to 5:2.

…..did you drink enough fluids yesterday? Insufficient fluids can make you headachey and light headed.

Very often what we think is hunger is actually thirst and a glass of water or a cup of green tea can take the feeling away. This can happen on non fast days too so drink plenty today.

It takes a little while for your body to adjust to this new way of eating but it’s definitely worth persevering and as nearly everyone on here will tell you – it gets easier as times goes on.

have a look at the ‘faq’ link – lots of useful information there and also at the ‘how?’ link and calculate your BMR and TDEE if you haven’t already done so. There is a calculator and an explanation of why you should know these figures in that link.

the ideal is to have NO MORE THAN 500 cals on a fast day and ABOVE your BMR but NO MORE THAN your TDEE on a non fast day.

You might find it helpful to use an app like ‘My Fitness Pal’ to track your calories for the first few weeks until you get a grasp of calorie values and portion sizes.

There’s loads of help on the forums and always someone who can answer your questions.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    xx

    Hi Sylvestra.

I was conscious during my fast that I maybe not drinking enough fluids. I did try and up it a bit. But I do think that I could have drunk more than what I did.

I did take a look at my TDEE but did not see the BMR part. I will head back and have a look at that. I am pretty certain I will end the day below my TDEE.

My fitness Pal looks good and I am serious considering using it.

I don’t want to go above my TDEE on a non fast day and in the same token don’t want to not eat enough calories so that it is like a crash diet and therefore unsustainable in the long term.

Thanks for your advice and I will post an update in a week or so 🙂

Sounds like you’ve got it all sussed @hopeful_ well done

    xx

Hi everyone…. Well, in to day one of fasting.. had a poached egg at 10am (it is a Saturday after all!)Stomach is now rumbling … (is that a good sign??) Gonna really try and stick at this one…! Keep thinking about food though!

@hopeful_ & @louby66 if u feel hungry why not try halving the daily limit to morning and evening or some other compromise. I had poached egg salmon and toast for breakfast. And a mugshot for tea. I have always had a big breakfast so this works better for me

Just an update for you all

5th fast day tomorrow planned. The fast days have got easier (headaches and dizziness have lessened on fast days)

I have lost weight.. around 4/5 pounds but it is difficult to gauge as my weight fluctuates a lot.

I love the feeling of the next morning after a fast, I don’t wake up hungry at all, and I seem to eat my breakfast a lot more slowly than normal but soon after eating the hunger pangs pick up.

My greatest concern is over eating on non fast days. It’s difficult to find a balance as I don’t want to be ‘dieting’ and feel deprived on the non fast days but I know that I have to be sensible and stay below my TDEE.

My fast days are Mon & Fri. But I think I will change the Fri one to Thurs as I Find the day after a fast I am often hungrier & there is less of a temptation to overeat on a Fri, as I am work, compared to a Saturday when I often eat out.

I am in this for the long haul. Looking forward to the summer months when hopefully my hard work will start to pay off
