  • Hi all,
Sorry- just need to rant for a minute! I’ve been on the Fast Diet now for about 5 weeks and had awesome success. I’ve lost 14lbs, am eating less and have more energy. All great things! One thing however that really bugs me is the term “feast day”. This term bothers me because it gives the false impression that a person can be successful on this plan and still eat whatever they want 5 days out of the week without consequences. That couldn’t be further from the truth!
Although this diet (or lifestyle change for me) can work really well, if you “feast” 5 days out of the week you are not going to see results. Simply using the term feast infers that gorging is an acceptable practice on non-fast days. The truth though is that this diet should be viewed as a weekly plan because everything you eat in a given week plays a role in how much weight you will actually lose (total caloric intake). In my personal option, this diet works for three key reasons:

    1) You are cutting your overall weekly calories each week by 2400-3000 (if you average eating 2000 per day)
    2) Your stomach shrinks on fast days causing you to eat less on non-fast days
    3) You are more mindful of what you are eating on non-fast days than you might have been otherwise.

From my own experience, all of the above are true. I have found myself to be less hungry and unable to eat as much as I used to on days following a fast. I have also found myself to be more mindful on non-fast days and really paying attention to what I am eating. Don’t get me wrong here though- I still eat and enjoy what I want but when I do I remind myself that I fasted earlier in the week and I don’t want to waste that day or the effort. With that in mind, if you are new here- don’t be confused about your non-fast days. Yes- you can eat whatever you want and enjoy food but show self constraint and try to make healthier choices when you can. Also- don’t feel bad about having a few slices of pizza or cake- that is fine also. Just make sure that your other choices throughout the day and week are more positive.

On a side note- prior to purchasing the Fast Diet book, I did some online reviews. In many of the articles I read the author’s used the term “feast day” and gave the diet poor reviews overall. That is really sad because I now know that not a single one of those authors actually read the book! Nowhere in it does it say to eat whatever your want on non-fast days or encourage gorging! If that was how this plan worked then nobody would lose weight!

Hope this helps some newcomers to have a better understanding of the plan and good luck!

    ^^^^^^ what Jetsman said!!!

By all means, enjoy your food on a ‘5’ day, but don’t expect to lose weight if you try to make up for all the calories you saved on your ‘2’ day….. It ain’t gonna work!

    I couldn’t agree more.

Actually Michael himself is responsible for introducing the word “FEAST” into the 5:2 psyche. In the original HORIZON program Michael is talking to Dr Krista Varady about her research into Alternate Day Fasting. They are then seen ordering a meal at a burger joint with Michael literally stuffing himself with a giant Cheese burger, sundries etc and finishing of with a large bowl of ice cream. During their discussion they both used the words FEED and FAST until Michael unwisely states… Quote…”I am now starting to be won over by the idea of a simple pattern of FEAST and FAST can be powerful”. Unquote. He again used the words “FEAST DAYS and FAST DAYS” when in a laboratory where research was being carried out on the effects of fasting on the brains of mice. I believe that he unwisely used the word in the context of the initial research for the HORIZON program. Of course since he has developed the 5:2 program the word “FEAST” has quite understandably been dropped. It was picked up by the media who looked for a good headline and missed his comments near the end of the program when he uses the word “NORMAL” eating and not the “FEAST” word.
Hopefully we can see the demise of that dreaded “F” word and simply “FEED” or eat “NORMALLY”.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL OUT THERE.

I just call my non fast days normal days because i eat normally. Isn’t that the whole point?

Yes Nancy it is, and those of us who know that are the ones who are steadily shrinking 😉
