  • I’m from San Diego and I LOVE this diet! I’ve had extra baby weight for 3 years and this is the only way I’ve ever managed to budge the scale. I have always been thin and never really had to diet, but after I had my baby everything changed! I gained 28 pounds during my pregnancy, but I didn’t have a 28# baby (thank god for that)!!! I just never was able to lose the weight. I love to cook and I also love to eat and so I am absolutely horrible at dieting, so the thought of only having to be miserable, I mean dieting 2 days a week I knew I had to give it a try. Well, I’ve been doing it a month and I lost 6 pounds!! This is the only thing that has ever worked for me, and honestly once you find out which foods help you get over the FD the easiest, it just becomes routine! I find it best to keep myself the busiest on my FD’s too. I like a hard workout in the morning and then I like to do all my household chores on these days. I also find it helpful to wait as long as I can before I eat anything. So today, I got up had some black coffee, went to my gym for a hard workout came home and cleaned my floors and did some laundry. By the time I stopped it was 12:30 and I was ready to eat. I had a 1/2 c of low fat cottage cheese and added a chopped Roma tomato. This lasted me another 2 1/2 hours. I like to nap on my FD’s, it definitely helps with fatigue. When I woke up I made myself a fried egg and a piece of dry rye toast. I had another cup of black coffee. Then I ran errands the rest of the afternoon. When I got home I made myself a lean cuisine and called it a day. I drink lots of water all day long and I really haven’t had any issues with feeling nauseous or sick from fasting. In fact, I like the feeling of being light! It really has helped me even on so called cheat days! It’s really a miracle diet and I’m so glad I stumbled upon it.

Welcome EJ1196313 — I feel the same way. I’ve been stuck at the same weight (give or take a few pounds) for about 8-9 months ….I still have a ways to go ….I just started this way of life about 2 weeks ago and so far am LOVING it. Finding my FD’s getting easier ….I fast on Mon/Thurs and yesterday I was able to go all day with just coffee (with a splash of cream) and a green tea until about 5:30 p.m. …then had dinner. I was able to stay around 350-400 for the day (first time ever!) and I too keep VERY busy on those days. Monday’s I run errands and meal prep for the week ( a bit tricky on FD) and on Thursdays I clean the house from top to bottom — in addition I workout an hour every day in the morning at the Y (taking a combination of cardio/strength type classes) — I love working out on FD’s — I feel SO MUCH SKINNIER THAN I LOOK! Hahahahahah 🙂

Hope everyone is doing well today, and for those who fasted yesterday – YAY! Those who are today, positive thoughts are sent your way!

Sue, Hi and welcome to intermittent fasting! I am in my third week of fasting, so still in a learning curve here too. I keep referring back to the book, ” The Fast Diet”, which is the foundation of this diet. They don’t really say just eat anything you want- this diet is more scientifically based than that. They recommend eating protein particularly, because it takes longer to digest than carbs. And fats don’t trigger insulin release, which is what makes us hungry. You want to stay away from the typical white carbs that turn into glucose in your body- they trigger an insulin release that makes us hungrier, and prevents fat burning- glucose gets used first. So for example an egg is a better choice than a pancake, especially on a fast day. They have some great recipes in there too, examples of low calorie meals.
If you really want to dig into the mechanics of all this, “The Obesity Code” by Dr Fung really gets into how we trigger fat burning- it is not just reducing calories, but also choosing the right foods. I’ll be fasting again on Thursday- but doing my best to choose real food, not processed, in the meantime. Not always successful, but more aware!

rlw66, Sounds like you had a super successful day yesterday, yay!!

Hi everyone and welcome to the new posters.
I had a good fast day as well. I had such a busy shift, I didn’t have a chance to think about being hungry. It is getting easier to have a successful FD. I also like the light feeling. One thing I am getting past is the eating so I won’t get hungry mindset. I find that I am not hungry in the mornings and now know I can survive without eating until lunch.

Wishing everyone a successful eating/fasting day.

One other point about Fung’s work on insulin. Now it also makes sense why diet sodas and other artificially sweetened drinks lead to weight gain….or at least no loss. The sweet flavor can trigger insulin reaction even in the absence of calories. Seltzer with vinegar/lemon for me.

K-Lo, That baked trout sounds delicious! Details of how to bake it, please? I love trout and rarely think to cook it.

notfastenough, I started with this recipe —

    http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/12682-rainbow-trout-baked-in-foil-with-tomatoes-garlic-and-thyme

..and added chopped olives and pimientos, and a tablespoon of sweet paprika. I used two larger lake trout from Idaho, and had a quarter of one fish. Since the fish I bought were a bit larger, I ended up opening the foil and broiling for that last two minutes. Very happy with this recipe.

I wanted to make ceviche, but I got out of work late and didn’t have time for the fish to “cook”. Maybe next weeken.

Some research shows link between aluminum and Alzheimer.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3056430/

I don’t know if it is correct or not, but many of my relative had the disease, so I want to be on safe side. Long time ago I thru away all aluminum containers, but only recently realized that I use aluminum foil to bake. So about 6 months ago I got rid of it too. I bought glass baking ware with covers. I highly recommend it for baking with out foil and also it cleans very easily.

    K-Lo,
We eat a lot of baked trout and salmon in our family. I never add olives to the dish, but sounds that it could be lovely. Thank you for the recipe.
I am impressed that you lost extra weight during your vacation!
You also inspire me to use more shitake mushrooms and miso soup. 🙂
Did you leave in Japan or other Asian country for a while?

Coldpizza, I visited Japan for two weeks in 1985. That’s about it.

I was shocked that I lost weight on vacation, as I did not abstain from alcohol. Quite the opposite. But I guess my eating was quite moderate, and NO snacking. We were just too busy. I had a great fast yesterday, and I’m down again. This is all quite unexpected. 4-5 pounds away from what I thought was a fantastical goal.

Re your post on aluminum, I thought those link to aluminum had been debunked over the years.

    K-Lo
On aluminum: You are probably right, but after seeing my grandma for last three years before her death, I want to eliminate anything that I could think off. Ignore it if you think it is not worth it. 🙂

No snacking – is probably a key in your case. I still struggling to achieve it…

Anyway, it is nice to have you back!. 🙂

Thanks for referencing Jason Fung videos. Dr Fung so makes sense out of all of this.
5th week and getting into a groove.
Walked 5 miles this morning over hilly terrain. Off to eat breakfast. Have a great feast or fast day.

I’ll join in! Right now I’m at 170 and want to get to 135 or so. I’ll be doing my fast days on T/TH. I’m also on week 3 of training for a half-marathon so that should take care of the exercise piece too. Ready to fit back into my cute pants.

asauer, welcome and you will get there!

Thanks notfastenough 🙂 it was a pretty decent day!

K-Lo the fish sounds awesome! And what a fun vacation to go enjoy, eat/drink AND still lose! YAY!!

Coldpizza – interesting info on aluminum foil ….I’ll have to look into that too!

Cizzy2 – I have to tell myself that a lot too AND remind myself that I won’t DIE if I do in fact get hungry! In fact, my brain needs to relearn that feeling! 🙂

Welcome newbies! Yay! This thread keeps growing and getting a bit busier. I like reading all the posts, success and challenges….makes me feel like there are others going through the same thing at different or similar times!

I’m hoping to get to some of those Jason Fung videos soon too! I want to read the Obesity Code too! Love learning about this stuff! 🙂

Hope everyone is staying strong today!

Hello! I’m young too and im from California. I just started the diet a month ago. I only weigh myself every two weeks. I’m not doing any excercise yet but I will begin too as soon as I’m done with finals at the end of this coming month. My initial weight was 145 lbs. My weight after 2 weeks was 137 and my next weigh in is this friday. I’m excited to see how I am doinf. Iv been taking pictures and it really helps because I can see the differences in the pics better than the mirror. I just joined the forum today.

    .

Welcome aliajolly- I am happy you found us! Congratulations on your weight loss- love the idea of taking pictures but I just don’t think I’m quite ready for that kind of honest visual feedback!! Pictures don’t lie and I started this diet after seeing pictures of myself- my face looked round as a moon and I just couldn’t believe it was me.

Just watched a Dr Fung video and I am so impressed with him. Finally someone’s making sense about weight loss and why we have all been failing at it.

Hi calibikini! As brutal y honest as they are pics are so helpful because just when you feel discouraged you look back and see how far you have come and get stronger. I have tried so many diets too and I always bounce back when I’m done. I did the master cleanse for 17 days and the warrior diet and found that fasting was easy for me. I naturally gravitate on most days to eat only once I get home. So with just a little more effort I can keep it under 500 twice a week. I love the results with minimal effort and I feel like I can do this for life

    Texas here.
I had been on the diet for over a year and a half lost 60 pounds, kept it off for the year. I loved it but life kicked me and I ate my way through it. I’m re-starting today with a successful fast day. I need to drop the 40 I picked up and get moving on living again

Welcome Texas- glad you are back to the plan again- what a great weight loss you had!! You can definitely do it again!!

Aliajolly- so right about the pics- I will really think about doing that. My son wants to go to college in SD- beautiful town!! You and I are very similar in weight- I started at 145 and now 5 wks into it I am 137– goal is 124 and I am 5’2″. You have youth on your side for faster weight loss- it used to cone offing me so much quicker– now it really likes to hang on for dear life!!

No pictures of me, please. I’m not very photogenic, although when I look at my baby pictures I was a cute kid and wonder what happened?

I’ve heard the aluminum and alzheimer’s connection for years and have been avoiding aluminum as much as possible just in case there is a connection. Other than cooking utensils, some brands of baking powder have aluminum in them so if you’re a baker check the ingredients before using it. Also a lot of deodorant has aluminum in it.

    Have a great day, everyone.

    Bronx

Bronx, I can’t remember the last time I used baking powder!

Things are awfully quiet on this thread today ….hope everyone is well. Fasting day tomorrow so planning today. Made a creamy homemade avocado cilantro dressing to top a chopped power blend salad! (And I add chopped herbed chicken to it too!). Pretty low cal — dressing is about 40 calories for 2 tablespoons. Having the salad today, plenty leftover for FD dinner tomorrow! 🙂

Hoping to start my fasting after dinner tonight and see if I can do just water/coffee/tea until dinner tomorrow 🙂 Not sure since I work out early tomorrow. Might need to do some yougart with a tablespoon of whole fruit jam for sweetness ……..hmmmm……busy scouring the Internet for 5:2 ideas, recipes, advice, struggles, information, etc.

hey rlw66, busy day! First time I have sat down…on my patio after having refurbished my flower bed and planted a few pots the last few days. Going out to dinner tomorrow, so am considering turning this into a FD instead of tomorrow….but I am thinking that us harder to do if I haven’t planned ahead. Mostly I want a glass of wine with dinner tonight! I am impressed with how well you plan, and once again would love your salad dressing recipe- great calorie count! Remember too, there are some good ideas in the Fast Diet book, as well as the cookbook they came out with after that.

Hi Everyone, Fasting day for me today. I worked out today for the first time ever on a fast day. During the workout I felt a little weak lifting weights but afterwards I felt normal and didn’t experience the slump or hunger pangs I expected post workout. I watched the Dr Jason Fung YouTube videos someone suggested (thank you) which talked about working out on a fast day and how you get more energy on a fast day so to workout so thought I’d give it a try. Dury is out. I’ll let you know nice I complete the day whether it worked or not. My husband has been fasting along with me and has lost 6lbs already in just over 2 weeks. He is the poster child as he has never dieted in his life so hasn’t messed up his base metabolic rate which I think I have with my yoyo calorie reduced diet. Anyhow we are doing it together and seeing results! Have a good day All!

Hey notfastenough — nice! We have had gray cold rainy weather here, have not been able to do much outside yet. Hope to soon! Yeah, I’ve been spending a lot of time on this way-of-life right now, but it’s so new and I’m hoping to be successful, all while trying to learn a lot … AND deal with life 🙂 I just put the kindle app on my iPad and was going to look at the books, cookbooks, etc in the next few days.

    The salad dressing recipe is:

Creamy Avocado Cilanto Salad Dressing (approx 40 cals per 1 oz [2 tablespoons])

    1 medium avocado, chopped
1 small jalapeno, seeded, deveined and roughly chopped
    1 clove garlic, peeled
    1/4 cup loosely packed cilantro
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt (can sub. Sour cream)
    1/4 cup salsa
    1/4 cup milk
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    1/2 teaspoon sugar
    juice from 1 lime
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon cumin
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
    1/8 teaspoon smoked paprika

Blend all ingredients until smooth. May need to use a bit more milk to reach consistency desired, especially if using Greek yougart. Adjust cilantro and seasonings per your taste.

**I have one of those ninja blender things so I threw everything in there and blended until smooth. I used the Greek yougart and it was pretty thick so I kept adding little bits of milk until it reached the consistency of most creamy salad dressings.** 🙂

Just a note as far as recipes: Krista Varady has some very good, simple recipes in her book, “The Every Other Day Diet”. I’ve put together a binder with recipes I’ve used on fasting days, and have added quite a few from her book. I’ll be away for 2 1/2 weeks next month, and I think my partner can handle putting together a quick fasting day meal while I’m away, using some recipes from her book.. (Michael Mosley based his 5:2 book on Krista’s research.) We are in the rhythm of every other day fasting, now, and having read Jason Fung’s “The Obesity Code”, are going to try a 24 hrs fast. As we also incorporate 16:8, 24 hours shouldn’t be too difficult. Finally seeing the scale starting to drift down again, albeit slowly. Moreover, we both are feeling better overall, despite our crazy rosters! (Both of us are over 60, still working as nurses, so rotating shifts).

Hi everyone. Noticed I no longer get shakey when hungry. My brain doesn’t get disconnected either. This is huge. Fast day tomorrow and looking forward to it. Went out for dinner and cut myself some slack since tomorrow is a fast day.

Thank you rlw66 for such a great dressing recipe! I am going to make it for a fasting day next week. By the time I had decided to fast today, I added up my already consumed calories and I was almost six hundred… so I had my glass of wine and a chicken-veggie-tomato sauce stir-fry without the rice. And a small cookie:) So.. I am going to try a fast day tomorrow while going out to dinner. I think I will save all calories for later in the day- a first for me. I love the way on this thread everyone is finding their own way through, using the basic info and then tweaking it. Good luck tomorrow for those of us fasting!

Rlw– drueling over dressing recipe– can’t wait to try it. I have been feeling lower energy recently. I’m still working out 2-3 x wk but my fast day calorie count is a bit on the lower side (380-400) Maybe that is causing me to be a little more tired than normal. Really happy that I do not have the same desire to over eat on feed days as I used to. Now that I know I can have what I want again it seems to have lessened my desire to eat like a piggy 🐽🐽 Even my ice cream cravings have calmed down a little bit.

Princess- glad the shakes are gone- I remember having those too. Now hunger is a dull roar instead of a volcanic eruption!!

hey uswoman thanks for the additional recipe info 🙂 love it!

YAY Princess Cilantro — I’m hoping for that tomorrow on my fasting day! 🙂

stay strong tomorrow notfastenough — just think how wonderful dinner will be. SO WORTH THE WAIT. 🙂

I too love all the input, ideas and thoughts shared here 🙂 — good group of peeps!

positive thoughts to all tomorrow, those fasting and those trying to eat under their TDEE 🙂

    Morning all 🙂

CaliBikni – hahaha …hopefully you like it once you make it ….it was my first attempt at making this one ….pretty darn good. It’s supposed to go with a southwestern salad …but I’m trying to figure out how to make that salad low cal ….sorta tricky 🙂 I make a homemade Caesar dressing that I LOVE …..have never bought a bottle of Caesar dressing since — and that one is super easy too but that one has approx 70 calories per 1 0z …….

Hoping the fasting day goes well and “fast” for all of us!

    K-Lo,

I used baking powder last week when I cut one of the dog’s nails too short and it started bleeding. I read somewhere to mix baking powder and corn starch and apply it to the nail to stop the bleeding. It didn’t really work but made a nice mess on the dining room carpet.

    Bronx

    Morning everyone.
Made up an Indian type lentil dish. 97 cal/ half cup. Lentils, onions, chicken broth, curry, tumeric, ginger, lemon grass, garam masala, ginger, salt, cayenne, peanut butter powder, high fat coconut milk, diced tomatoes. That on brown rice will be my fast day dinner. Yummy and filling. Hubby said it was restaurant quality which is high praise for something I made up.
Hope everyone has a great day.

    Good morning,
Today is my fast day and actually looking forward to it. My “fat” clothes feel a bit looser today. Tomorrow will be my weigh, measurement day.

Princess Cilantro– your FD dinner sounds wonderful! I will be saving my calories for dinner which will be salad and chicken. Keeping it simple since I am not much of a cook (but learning).

Wishing everyone a successful fast/feed day.

It’s my FD! I’m gonna try to do my calories in one meal today. I’ve never done it this way so I’d like to try it to see how I feel. I’m making one of the recipes from the fasting book I bought, chicken in mushroom sauce. Hopefully it’s good!

Sick with allergies and sinus this week. Not planing any fasting at least for the rest of the week. Feeling low, since I already know that I will not see my goal loss this month. 🙁
Reading the forum, trying to get my spirits up again. Realized that I am sipping black coffee this morning like it is fasting day. Maybe I could do 18:6 for 3 days, and watch my calories.
Looking forward to May. May 1st is Orthodox Easter (Pasha), and finally the Great Lent will be over. I am missing eggs, butter and meat. Cannot wait to cook and eat them again. 🙂

One my second fast day of the week. I feel good, hungry yes, but really good. It’s been so long since I’ve fasted finally getting back to my lifestyle feels so positive. Exercise has been difficult, rain, heat and heavy body making it harder than it should be but I have not slacked. I want to feel good again.

Today is my second FD for the week too. I am a little hungry. Have had60 calories. Will be eating in about 3 1/2 hours so I know I need to occupy myself with a walk and a cleaning project I have been putting off. I am thrilled to know Princess Cilantro you no longer getting shakey with hunger and your brain remains connected. It is big…Huge. This is what makes this way of eating great. There are more positives than just on a calorie counting diet and to think they extend for some of us beyond the fact that we just have to do this one day and then go back to normal. I am up 2 lbs and hope to make a dent in that tomorrow morning scales. I believe it is the snacks on food days.
Best to each of you on FD and on Feed Day.

Rlw– home made Caesar dressing— please share that one!! I’ve never made it and my son loves it. I would love to try your recipe.

Boy was I lazy yesterday but today …. Back to normal-I’m addicted to dr Fung obesity videos now- good for my brain to try and keep up with the info- what an amazing dr he is!!

    I’m now down 9lbs… Yeah!!!

Coldpizza– hope you feel better soon! Sinus problems are such a pain! Hang in there and stay strong! Soon you’ll be back to your normal self!

Good to hear so many are making it through their fast day! I am fasting as well- a little cottage cheese and pineapple chunks earlier, and now the challenge: going out to dinner! Planning to have a salad of some kind, with chicken- and eat slowly! Cold pizza, I hope you are feeling better- thanks rlw66 for your great recipes and ideas! And wow, Cali, 9 lbs gone! Very inspiring! Happy FD all:)

    Hey all —

Ditto – Coldpizza ….hope you feel better soon!

    Enjoy your dinner out notfastenough!

CaliBikni – AWESOME!!! Nice progress……. 🙂 (posting recipe soon!)

TexasFoodie – I agree….it feels good to take “control” again. I’m working on that too ….and PeaJay that is what I’m trying to pay attention too — I seem to do pretty good on FD….it’s my regular days and I really need to pay attention to what I’m eating and why. I started writing down (not just putting it in an app) everything I’m eating and the calorie count so I can look at it in black and white one a regular basis! I also make notes about the day — hard day, easy day, hungry day, etc., ….I think it is helping me stay a little more “focused” ….doesn’t mean I’m not eating sweets (dang it!) ….just means I see what I’m doing 🙂 I have a ways to go!

I’m waiting for my FD dinner of lemon and herb cod and steamed asparagus to be done 🙂 have not eaten much at all today…..all is good 🙂 I also weigh in tomorrow morning and am hoping to see a slight downward trend 🙂

Seems like a fair amount of us do one of our FD’s on Thursday — that’s kinda nice 🙂

    Homemade Caesar Dressing

    1/2 tsp anchovy paste
    2 cloves garlic, chopped
    1 cup mayonnaise
    1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
    1/4 cup half-n-half
    2 tbsp lemon juice
    1 tbsp Dijon mustard
    2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Mix or shake all until well blended. Allow to refrigerate for several hours for best flavor. Thin with additional half-n-half if needed. (Approx 70 calories per 1 oz). LOVE IT!!

    Good Morning,
Haven’t posted in a bit – I have been hanging in there but it’s been rough.

My fast days are great. My eating days leave much to be desired. I tried fasting two days in a row but that was pretty harsh so I am back to ADF this week. Today is a fast – phew.

Will keep at this because losing a little at a time beats the heck out of gaining it all back.
    Happy fasting to you all.
    Cheers

MelindaShay- love your attitude— better to lose slowly than gain it all back!! I have to remember that one!! Sometimes it is hard to keep at it when the scales aren’t moving as fast as we would like. I try to remind myself that the slower I take it off the longer it will stay off!! I love the quick weight loss that happens with low carb diets but I can never hang on to the results– and really who can live without carbs?? I cannot handle a whole lifetime without them.

Hang in there and just imagine yourself in another month! You will be down more lbs no matter how slowly it goes.

I am fasting today too and just had a cup of tea for breakfast- noticing my skin is looking drab these days- I used to make smoothies everyday with lots of leafy greens in them- I think that helps my skin look better- I need to get back to those again.

Have a good day to all — fasting or not!

    Good morning everyone!!
I had a good fast day yesterday. Saving my calories for dinner worked well for me yesterday. I thought I may have gone a bit over my limit, but the scale was good to me this am. I am down 8.5 lbs.

Calibikini–congrats on the weight loss. I,too, am watching Dr Fung’s videos. I will not receive his book until next week. I have listened to several of his lectures. I am amazed at the information. I loved hearing the science of how obesity has become such a problem. I really need to watch my sugar consumption.

Coldpizza–I hope you are feeling better soon.

I am hoping to stay within my TDEE until my next fast day. Already this morning my husband wanted to go out for breakfast. I asked if he was hungry, and he wasn’t. He is the type who eats according to the time of day instead of when he is hungry. He has agreed to put off eating until lunch. I am hoping for a 16:8 today.

Best wishes to everyone for a great weekend!!

I am not telling anyone either! I’ve proclaimed my intentions for weight loss far too many times. I’ve got 50 pounds to lose. This is day one for me-again. I believe that I can incorporate intermittent fasting into my regular lifestyle and not inconvenience anyone or trigger diet sabotage. I saw Dr. Mosley on Dr. Oz and for the first time, I also got “permission” to eat much less and to skip meals – without suffering undo bodily harm. I’m ready to just get on with it. Stop making excuses. Get to my goal weight. I live in Southern California, exercise almost everyday and am age 64.
