  • This time last year I thought the 5/2 diet was for people who had more will-power than me. On 18 Feb 2014 I read the book in one go, and decided that I should at least try it. I weighed 13 st 3lbs before I started. I was elated when I survived my 1st fast day without collapsing in a heap, so I continued. My target weight was 10 stone, which I reached in December 2014. I then went to the USA for 2 weeks, where I did the 1 day maintenance fast. I expected to put on weight out there, but when I came back I found that I had lost weight and was now 9 st 9lbs.

I experimented by doing another 1 day maintenance fast and lost weight again, so I’m now not doing any fast days. I’m 9st, 8lbs, and size 12/14. I assume this is because I have now gone off sugar, which has been another unexpected effect of the diet. A year ago I was a size 18, creeping up to a 20. I was very worried that I might end up with type 2 diabetes, along with all the potential side-effects.

A surprise effect of the diet was that my life-long headaches and migraines have stopped. I used to think they were related to being hungry, so I would try and prevent them by eating a small snack, which was obviously the wrong thing to do.

I did one thing differently – I ignored the advice about eating low-fat food on fast days, and I continued with butter, full-fat milk and olive oil – just in smaller quantities.

As far as I’m concerned, the Fast Diet is a modern miracle. It has transformed my life. I feel that my appetite and my attitude to food (I was a stress-eater) have been totally reset.

That is an incredible story Catherine, you must feel so good! The fact that 5:2 has altered your relationship with food to such an extent that you don’t even have to do maintenance is a total win! It can’t feel hard when you genuinely don’t want those foods anymore

    Well done, truly inspirational 🙂

    Hi Catherine,

    Congratulations on the weight loss.

I lost weight last year with 5:2 also, and have been maintaining under 60kg since June.

I don’t do 6:1 for maintenance either because, like you, I lose more weight (0.5kg) each time. Instead I eat 16:8, low processed carb/ sugar, with occasional semi fasts (maybe half TDEE).

Well done Catherine! What an inspiration!

My start weight and goal weight are the same as yours, so I hope I can emulate your amazing achievement.

Wow!! Catherine your story is truly inspiring!! Congratulations!!!

Before the Fast Diet, the way I avoided unhealthy food was by not allowing it in the house. If I knew that I had jaffa cakes indoors I would constantly think about them, and then eat them all. That’s all changed. I’ve had a packet of After Eights in the fridge since Xmas. I’ve eaten some, but don’t fancy the rest.

I’ve become this changed person in less than a year, and it’s all down to reading that book. I think Michael Mosley should become president of the universe.

    Fantastic!

Many thanks for kind comments, everyone, I just think more people should be doing it, because it is life-changing. And it’s a diet with a plan at the end, so you don’t end up in the trap of putting on more weight than you’ve lost.

Catherine, do you have any tips about coping at the beginning of the diet?

Excellent post Catherine, you are right it is life changing. When I first found out about it I felt like going up to overweight strangers and telling them about it, I didn’t, too much of a coward.
I feel like I am being set free from my fat. Isn’t it wonderful!

Catherine, Thank you a great story and it is a real life true one so all the more inspiring. I have been on the diet since September 2014 and have lost 8kg. I get frustrated that the going seems slow but the cm keep coming off even if the scales are only telling a 1kg loss in a month. Did you find this too? I am 56 so not sure if the age thing makes it slower or whether this is a pretty typical pattern. I would love to hear from you. Well done!

Catherine, You’re truly an inspiration! You’re exactly at the weight I’m hoping to achieve. I’m 57 and would welcome any tips also. Thank you for sharing your amazing results!

    Absolutely fantastic Catherine!!
I love reading about people’s successes on here that aren’t to do with weight loss (such as your lack of migraines and no need for sugar). I can’t wait to see what additional benefits I gain 🙂

    Hello everyone –

The things that worked for me were finding that I didn’t need breakfast until late in the morning, or indeed, until midday. On fast days I usually had porridge for breakfast, home-made thick soup for 2nd meal and something like roasted veg and couscous for my 3rd meal. I had 2 bowls of soup, if I felt like it `(and usually did). My final meal was usually quite large, so I would always feel that I definitely wasn’t suffering. I would have loads and loads of veg – just no potatoes and about 3 dessertspoons of couscous. Important to drink throughout the day. I got in loads of different herbal teas, so I could have a selection to stop me getting bored. I finished each fast day with chamomile tea, because that knocked me out and I went to bed early. I would plan what I was going to have for breakfast the next day, but when I woke up, I wouldn’t feel hungry.

I found it helpful to keep busy during fast days, and I also had a secret chocolate stash for stress emergencies. I broke up milk chocolate into tiny pieces and put them in the freezer. If I was feeling very stressed about anything, I could have a small piece of chocolate, and that seemed to help.

The other thing is that there will be weeks when the scales don’t move, and you just have to grit your teeth and keep going.

If I can do it, other people can, because I’m definitely not a super-human person.

And, I really feel so grateful to Michael Mosley for doing the hard graft and research.

Amazing story Catherine, thanks for sharing. Like many others i enjoy reading all the success stories.
I’m just over 6 weeks in and i feel great, down a stone already and i notice i’m generally less hungry and i’m overall eating less. Really love this fasting lark!!

Yes, thankyou Catherine! These are some really good tips! Pleas can I copy and paste this onto another thread as I think it will be really helpful?

I’m very happy to be copied and pasted. I think we should spread the word any way we can.

I know from talking to friends on Facebook that people are often still locked into Weight Watchers, in particular. I’ve no experience of WW because I never ever wanted to follow that system or have a public weigh-in.

When I was 18 in 1980, I was very slim (size 8, 7½ stone). I was able to eat whatever I wanted and didn’t put on weight, so I didn’t really have enough knowledge about what to do when that did start to happen. I knew I didn’t want to calorie-count, because it didn’t seem to work for other people.

By about 1993 I was size 20/22. I watched Gillian Mckeith’s programme and thought that I could try that. I lost about 2 stone and became a size 18. I stayed at that for many years. I then discovered low-carb eating after reading “Escape the Diet Trap” by John Briffa. I lost 2 stone on that, but then encountered a consultant, who shouted at me unexpectedly, so I went out and had some cake in the local cafe – and put the 2 stone back on gradually. I felt I knew what to do to lose weight (avoid carbs), but and I felt angry that this silly consultant had had an effect on me. And then I found the Fast Diet.

My initial target was to lose 2 stone, and then a further stone after that. I’ve now ended up at 9½ stone. And I know what to do, if I start to put weight back on again, which is so empowering. I thought Michael Mosley should become leader of the universe, but perhaps he should become a saint as well!

If only there was a like button

Do you know, I’ve thought that as well, about other people’s postings!
