5:2 and Sleeping

  • I started the 5:2 about 4.5 weeks ago and generally have coped well. No real difficulty dealing with the fasting and in fact looked forward to them. Furthermore I never went to bed hungry on fast days nor did I wake up hungry the morning after. To date I have lost 10lbs and my BMI has dropped below 25 – Great so far!

However over the same period that I started the diet plan I noticed that my sleeping pattern had changed. I was getting off to sleep ok but I started waking up for no apparent reason usually between 2 and 4am. I use to wake up at between 6 and 7am. At first I thought it may have been because I might have a prostrate issue or UTI as when I woke up I needed to go to the loo and that it was my bladder that as waking me but I have eliminated this as a cause after getting this checked out. I now think the causation is the opposite direction (ie Am waking up dor some other reason and then find that I need to pee!)

I have done a bit of research and have come across articles that has identified a possible relation between the 5:2 and disturbance of the circadian rhythm. The theory is that the constant switching between fasting and non fasting over the weekly cycle might confuse the brain and affect the body internal body clock.

I have read threads on this site ( I think? I have done so much research I cant remember where I saw it now) which has identified some sleeping problems people have encountered doing this diet but this has been limited only to problems on fast days where people go to bed maybe still feeling hungry and have difficulty getting off to sleep. But for me it affects every night of sleep regardless of whether I fasted that day or not. I do feel tired each night I go to sleep but I just wake up really early and obviously this is unsustainable. I can not think of what other reason could contribute to my poor sleeping. I do not feel stressed; I am quite active during the day (including exercise and walking the dog) so I do expend energy; and practice good sleep hygiene (ie no distractions in the bedroom, no caffeine and alcohol in the evening etc)

I have decided to take a 2 week break from the diet to see if my normal sleeping pattern returns to normal. However I would be really interested to here if any other faster has noticed similar experience.

    Lostboy..

I find it only disturbs my fasting day nights although now I think it’s improving…

My hubby and myself have been doing 5.2 for nearly 3 years now…we did find one tablet of magnesium 375mg taken at 7 pm and we both thought it helped..it takes about two weeks to work….if you are in the U.K. Boots do offers on line sending them free to pick up in store..their prices were good, buy one get one free…

We have been away for a months holiday and I forgot to pack them…so 6 weeks in now and we are sleeping well without the tablets…maybe they have put us into a sleep rhythm …

A lot of people are lacking magnesium so we must to start taking it again…

Good luck…this diet plan is the best I have ever been on …and I have been on them all !!…give it a longer go..

The peeing in the night is due to weight loss…it’s a good sign…you are getting rid of your fat..it’s annoying but good..

My sleep pattern has changed to recently, I cannot say it is definitely due to the 5:2 or not. I take magnesium tablets and have done for some time. I haven’t noticed that they have improved my sleep. Interesting thread. I would like to know more.

I suffer with insomnia periodically. At the moment it’s dire and the 5:2 has me struggling. There has been some chat on the October challenge thread.

Sorry don’t know how to link the exact post.

There are some lovely replies. I am going to try the magnesium and the screen block ideas. I am exploring the breathing technique too.

Sugar and alcohol are largely eliminated, except last night I had a lot of wine (over a long period of time) and I slept like a log, best night in years.

Catnip tea, made of dried catnip leaves, is an easily-obtained product that helps many people to sleep. Many friends use it with great success.
Good job with your weight loss, Lost.

Before trying intermittent fasting I was doing low-carb for the better part of two years. I was in and out of ketosis a lot and the thing was that I needed to pee A LOT when I was going into ketosis. So it could be that. The other thing was that I found that I needed an hour or two less sleep per night when I was in ketosis.

When I overeat (binge) on foods high in carbs I need to sleep a lot more than usual.

I tend to sleep very well even if I’m loaded up with alcohol or caffeine. I get insomnia about once every few months and find that it is best to go downstairs and surf the net or watch TV and relax until I feel like sleeping – or until it’s time to get ready for work, whichever comes first.

That’s my experience anyway – rather than try to guess what is happening with you I’ve shared my experiences with dieting and sleep/pee patterns.

Well done on your weight loss efforts. I hope you can get through these bumps in the road.
