  • NorrieB, this is not true (about the metabolism slowing down). I do the same as you, eat less on the NFD just because I can’t eat more than 1500 cal/day maximum. I don’t eat emotionally, nor when I’m stressed out/tired/bored, never. Just continue with the diet and it’s going to be just fine.

    California, day #39, NFD.

    Australia Day 40 FD

USA Day 39. I am sorry I missed so many days. We were moving to another house, and spend packing 4 days. I took days off from work, and now at new place there is still no internet yet. After so much physical work, I am back to work and feel that I could rest a little since nothing change at work. At new place everything in boxes. I spend whole morning looking for stuff like shampoo, hair spray and my scale. And whole night I have to persuade my cat, that everything is ok, and this is his new home. He still does not believe me and spend the first night with loud meow-alarm every now and then.

But the good news that with all that work, I did not really have time to overeat, and my scale today showed the lowest number ever, and I did not even fast. Yey!

Coldpizza …so happy you checked in…. We were getting a little worried. Congrats on the loss…nothing like moving house to help you lose weight πŸ˜„

Day 39. Wisconsin, USA. Is it rude not to make specific follow up comments on friends’ posts? I hope not. I read everyone’s posts, and enjoy them so very much. Who said we are pen pals? I love that. It’s true.

Three FD’s this week in preparation for the final weigh in on Saturday. I had to leave the house for a work emergency last night. When I returned, my 16-year-old son had made chocolate chip cookies. Gluten free. He felt badly for me for having to work. He wanted to do something nice, so he offered me a cookie when I walked in the door. Holy heaven, they were amazing. AND, the kitchen was very clean. Really, who could say no? And, who could say no to another one, after he went to bed? Apparently, not me.

Then, this morning, on my FD, a work mate had my favorite Starbucks Latte waiting for me on my desk as a kind surprise. I don’t tell anyone I’m fasting, so all this extra food is just unlucky. But, not really, because kindness is never unlucky. πŸ™‚

I am drinking the latte, and keeping to the fast otherwise.

So glad Coldpizza is back. Funny cat story!!

    Edzeko,
Your teenage son make cookies for you AND clean the kitchen!!!
NOBODY could say no to that for sure. I would happily eat everything my kids made for me, and fast in between. πŸ˜€

We always have to support kindness in other people, it is priority and wisdom of life.

Besides, the diet is for us to enjoy the life, and to suffer. πŸ™‚

BTW – Congrats on parenting success!

I tell you a secret – I cannot even keep up with all posting, so it is definitely not rude not to follow up with every comments.

OOPS! I meant to say, the diet is for us to enjoy the life and NOT to suffer. LOL!

Hello, Day 39 UK, Cotswolds: Fast Day. Just a quick log-in as I’ve only just got back from a hard day at work. Over 25 hours since I last ate, so just cooking my small meal of two boiled eggs and two slices of toast. I’m STARVING ! Back to eating tomorrow.

Hello again everyone! Day 39 (?) in Los Angeles. Edzeko, how lovely to receive such thoughtful gifts of kindness from your son and co-worker. One if the nice things about 5:2 is the power it “gives” us to adjust and make choices in what / when we eat.

Doing my 2d FD for this week, maybe my last one for this challenge period. I would usually be doing my 2d FD tomorrow, but I’ll be driving to fetch my daughter home from college then so don’t want to leave anything to chance. I will try to put off eating until late tomorrow afternoon, making this a b2b 2-day FD, but I doubt I will be able to resist eating during the long road trip from home to UCDavis. We will drive home on Saturday. This won’t be ideal for dropping as much weight as possible before the last challenge day and final weigh-in. Oh well, there’s always Monday!

(Coda, I may not be able to check in again until Sunday. But rest assured, I’m still “in!”)

    Switzerland – Day 39 – NFD
Great to read everyone’s stories. I won’t be able to take part in the next challenge as I’m off on a really long, once-in-a-lifetime type holiday to Japan and we won’t have regular wifi (or phones/credit cards that work, from what I’ve heard!). But I’m looking forward to catching up when I can, so please keep posting!!

Thanks for the feedback ANAIDE and Melilotus, it helps. Looking forward to starting a fresh challenge with all, so I know from the start what is expected, instead of coming in a couple of weeks before the end….I feel like a gate-crasher at a party!

UK day 39!!!! Lovely to check in on so many posts. Sitting here having a cuddle with my very sleepy baby whilst having a good nose through them all! Its been a very busy day today in the lively sunny norfolk, took the pup out for a long walk, gave the back garden a good mow and tidy up and just had 2 new windows fitted. I am thoroughly exhausted but have had so much fun being silly with the little one and playing with bubbles and mud that it is one of those lovely memories i will always treasure πŸ˜€

Such words of wisdom in your postings, so interesting to hear about fat cells and the likening of metabolism to a drill sergeant made me chuckle! Glad to see we’re all still here in between our personal bits and bobs. Im looking forward to posting my final weight and measurements for this challenge – am i right in thinking that will be sunday on day 43?! For myself, i am drawing a mental line between the end of this one and the start of the next and calling that my own mini challenge to see how well i can do on my own although im sure I’ll check in from time to time!

NorrieB: Never a gate-crasher, it’s great to have people join us. As for me, I can’t believe I’m still here!

UK day 39 last post from me ( I will try Sunday but not sure it will be possible ) so I checked back to see what my original goal was and I hoped to lose 10lbs ,this morning I was at 9.6 down and I’ve fasted today so I reckon I’ll be there by tomorrow but in some ways the numbers aren’t that important to me as I feel I’ve gained so much in the way of eating better and understanding why I over eat that I feel confident that long term I’ll get to where I want ,I’m not going to fast whilst I’m on holiday but I am going to be sensible and my aim is to be at the same weight when I start the July challenge

Coda and everyone – Thanks and look forward to catching up in July xxx

    QuΓ©bec, day 39

    NFD
This morning the scale showed a new number I hadn’t seen for years ! So happy !

    Planning for a FD tomorrow.

Have a nice day everyone and keep up the nice work.

Pacific NW USA: Day 39 NFD with 16:8

Having some sleep issues since I started back to work and I’ve heard that ups your cortisol which in turn signals your body to store fat. Feel like it could be sabotaging my 5:2 efforts. 😱 ??

NorrisB – piggy backing on what Anaid answered, I asked this same question. 16:8 means you eat within an 8 hour window during the day and don’t eat during 16 hours. I’ve found, like Anaid, that it’s easy to skip breakfast (counter to ALL other types of weight loss advise) and eat lunch at noon and dinner before 8 PM. Your other question about “starvation mode” on MFP also keeps popping up and it sort of goes along with the info bigbooty and Dr’s Mosely and Fung have given us before, that intermittent fasting causes a different reaction in our bodies than just calorie restriction.

Bigbooty – I’ve mapped out your explanation from 8 June 2016 (4:15 AM). Can you continue along that vein and tell us how the fasting protocol creates a different response than just calorie restriction (starvation mode)? I can understand when we don’t eat for a period of time there’s reduced glucose for our cells to take up but how is that different than calorie restriction (starvation mode)?

Minois – good plan, good luck today!

    Back2future,
I also had sleeping issues that I don’t usualy have.

I started taking melatonine. It is the hormone that is usualy secreted by the brain when it’s time to go to sleep. Doctor sais it is not addictive. I’m using it as a temporary solution because I know I am normaly a good sleeper.

    Good luck

Day 39 – Scotland – Haar over the water today dropping the temperature down to 14 degrees. Inland it was 18. Welcome to summer in Scotland!
Not been feeling good today – thick head cold and my feet are like blocks of ice. Thinks it’s just the extremes in temperature. Just when we are in shorts and tee-shirts, we need a fur coat handy too!
Kept my calories under control today, and didn’t feel like much, but had fresh dressed crab and salad for dinner which I couldn’t finish which OH did. Feel quite bloated today so probably a knock on effect from eating yesterday. Actually looking forward to FD tomorrow. Considering doing 16:8 for the last three days if I don’t reach target by Sunday.
    Almost there again!…..
Hoping I feel better than this by tomorrow as its my Pilates class in the morning. Early night for me.
Quebecoise – Is the Melatonin working? I am still having sleep issues and have tried everything except pills from the Doc.
Enjoy your day/evening wherever you are. TTL

    Scotland

Day 39 USA Minnesota- another FD today. I usually do Mondays and Thursdays but I have a potluck to attend for my granddaughter’s pre-school program tomorrow night. I’m thinking of adding a Friday fast as well in order to end the challenge giving it my all! Congratulations to everyone staying strong and to those of you who are seeing new, lower numbers on the scale. And best wishes to all who are signing off early to go on vacations. I look forward to hearing from you in July. Have a great time!
    Good luck everyone!

Aussie day 40 almost there good luck everyone.

Days 38/39 Cornwall UK. Coda, my apologies for not signing in yesterday, it was just so busy! NF day today but did 16/8 a lovely long bike ride this morning to meet up with friends for coffee, it was such a glorious day! This afternoon was a very busy one so no problem waiting till 4 for a snack of a few almonds and cherrys. below Tdee even with a glass of wine.
Not able to read posts fr yesterday and today but will catch up tomorrow.
Fast day tomorrow planning a bike ride to a local Historic house and estate.
Good luck to everyone one these last few days of the challenge, onwards and downwards!!

    Northern Spain day 39
    Fast day today
Strawberries and cream and vegetable soup – in that order.
    It was delicious
Great to hear that everyone is doing so well.
Had a dreadful day at work today as I took on the bully who happens to be my boss. She has been making my life miserable for years and I put up with it because I thought I deserved it.
Anyway, I survived it but I might be out of a job soon.
    Ooops!!!
This diet is nothing if empowering. I wouldn’t have done that before.
Self confidence can be amazing. Who’d have thought that losing a few pounds could make you lose your shackles and stand up for yourself.
There’s nothing like a little bit of drama in your life every now and again to spice up things. Oh dear!!
    Cheers

Dollybird, congratulations! Standing up to a bully takes a special kind of courage, well done. Your co- workers must be glad too as they have probably been suffering the same bullying. Hopefully they follow your lead.

Dollybird…well done for standing up for yourself. I did the same thing once many yeats ago. I have never regretted it and went on to bigger and beyyer things.

    Australia, day 40, FD

Have my FD soup ready for tonight’s dinner in the freezer – fish and calamari and low cal low GI veggies in miso soup.

It’s been a great experience doing this challenge with all our pen-pals on here, as we work together to normalise our weight and work through the challenges of living in a world of good, inappropriate, and downright bad food.Thank you allπŸ™‚

Interesting about the language in Nthn Ireland! Wondering whether our ancestors from Ireland and maybe Cockney English has helped shape Strine in Australia. We sometimes have rhyming slang also. When overseas, sometimes people think we are from London.

    Onwards and Downwards,
    Merry

    Well done, Dollybird.

Why are some FDs so much harder than others – even though I follow exactly the same routine.

    Australia – Day 40 – 2 days to go of challenge πŸ™‚

Wow, almost finished the challenge. Feeling horrible today and yesterday. I must be coming down with something. I haven’t done measurements since the start of the challenge, so looking forward to weighing in and measuring to finish the challenge. I have enjoyed having the 42 days with you all.

Day 39 California. Today was to be a fast day but became very hungry this evening. I normally fast on Thursdays but thought I might try 3 days this week. I think I will fast tomorrow instead and keep to my established pattern. I am still trying to get caught up on all the posts. My 87 yr old neighbor hurt her back and I have been busy helping her out the past few days. I have a day off tomorrow and plan to back on track with everything.

    NL day 40
    FD today.
    Have a great weekend!

    UK day 40
Coda please would you count this as a late check in for yesterday and today’s?
    NFD yesterday FD today

    Hi everyone
    Northern Spain here again
Thank you so much for those encouraging words.
    Thanks too for everything
    Dollybird

    Switzerland day 40 – FD
    Good luck everyone!

I love that everyone is so committed, even when they pause or other life issues happen, they get right back on track. πŸ™‚
Whilst I’ve always had the odd day here and there where my first drink can be hours after I get up, or a first meal after 3pm ‘naturally’, my big problem is emotional eating.
I thought that the TV program Michael Mosley showed that it was 2 days that he ‘fasted’ for. I can only assume that I was wrong! (I might still have it recorded!)
I want to take this 42 day challenge and really, really hope that I can try and stick to it. Mostly I eat sensibly and not that much on usual days, but emotional one’s …. hummm another story! Sadly I’ve had lots and lots of bad days since Nov last year! πŸ™ But if I can last, (fast etc) then maybe it’ll encourage me to really stick with it!
(I’m still wading through all the newbie articles – thanks guys!) πŸ™‚ (Scot & England)

Good evening from South Australia Day 40

IL (USA) Day 40 – last FD for this challenge for me.

I’m holding my own weight wise and that is good, but I still want to lose some 10 more pounds.

Do any of you plan to keep this 5:2 as a lifestyle? I wonder if with some alterations it would a good way to stay at a goal weight. Would that keep us from gaining back what we have lost? That I suppose is my fear/concern that once I go off 5:2 then the weight would come back on.

Australia Day 40 FD and the last one of the challenge for me. Really really hungry today. Maybe knowing it was the last one in this challenge made it so much harder??? Looking forward to weighing in. I am packing for our long weekend in Sydney and tried on a few clothes that were on the tighter side six weeks ago, and they fit so much better, dare I say it even loose. πŸ˜‹ All the best everyone. πŸŽ‰

US, Day 40, from sunny breezy NYC….last FD of the challenge. I am taking measurements on Saturday.

    USA, Day 40. Fasting.
I cannot believe how easier it is to skip a meal when you are so busy unpacking stuff. I had a good breakfast and really unhealthy lunch with fried chicken and fried potato. I was so stuffed that did not want to eat at evening at all. So I am kind of fasting from yesterday 2 pm. Scale did not move up, which was nice surprise. I am fasting today, so hopefully, I will be a little bit lighter by the end of the challenge.

I am so happy to report that I am steadily in healthy range. Buy-buy overweight me!!

I also noticed, that when I gain recently back 5 pounds due to week and a half binge, those pounds much easier to lose than the original pounds. So if you gain a little back, don’t worry too much. πŸ˜€

Thank you everybody for support and great stories. I tried to lose weight by myself for so many times. This forum is really treasure and blessing, I could not do it without you, guys. Thanks!

    US SE Day 40 NFD

SongBirdMe I plan on continuing the 5:2 as I still have quite a lot of weight to lose. Once you are comfortable with where you are weight wise, you should switch to maintenance which is 6:1. My sister in law (who has been doing this diet since it came out) lost the weight and has maintained on the 6:1 for a few years now. She has not had any difficulty at all fasting one day a week.

    Hi everyone,

California, day #40. FD today. Only 2 more days. I’m also going to fast on Saturday and that will be my last FD for this challenge. I already updated my profile this morning, because I jumped on the scale and was very pleased with the results.

Have a nice rest of the week everyone!

UK day 40 – checking in for a NFD but going high protein today.

    Hi Songbird,

Yes, this is now my lifestyle. Ive been doing it for 19months with 4kgs to go. In the middle I took 8mths off during a time of extended family high stress, and went into maintainence mode. When I reach my goal weight I intend to go back to maintainence. There is a maintainence thread on the forum. Some people do maintainence by doing 6:1 with just 1 FD per week. Others do 5:2, the usual 2 FDs but up their food a little, on the other 5 days.

    Hi Aurora Magic
Yes, the Fast Diet is 5:2′, 2 non-consecutive days fasting and 5 days nonfasting. However, there are people who voluntarilly choose to do other things like adding an extra FD makingbtheir regime 4:3. Some do total fasts, i.e. Nothing but water on their 2 days. For me I started out doing 5:2, but as I am forced to be sedentary by chronic ill health I cannot use any calories in exercise, so I have changed my 5 nonFDs a little. I find that my weight loss, or weight normalisation as I like to call it, works best if I don’t eat till 12noon and finish at 8pm, eating all my calories for the day in an 8hr window. There are various things people do to fit their own personal needs, wishes etc, but 5:2 is really all you need. The m oderator of the forum does not stop people from posting about the variations they personally make, but it can sometimes be confusing for new people

I suggest, however, that you read a thread on the forum called ” Info for Newbies- your Questions answered” by simcoeluv. It will get you started very well. I also suggest you just follow the regular 5:2 guidelines, and not experiment with anything else, at least for a couple of months. Just get used to 5:2, and then you can decide if you want to do anything else.

    Good luck,
    Merry

Hello everyone! Brazil 40 day challenge

Here 0 Β° Celsios or 32 farenait is too cold for a tropical country, our homes have no heating system, is so cold inside and outside the home, it’s easier to lose weight in winter, spending a lot of calories to keep warm in my job is not so cold, must be 8 Β° (46F) inside.

This week I am every day fasting, 23: 1 with a meal of 800 calories, it’s easier to warm up and sleep with a larger meal.

I loved being with all of you, also will be the next challenge

UK day 40 Dahliafan – noted thanks

Exam over now to wait to see if what I answered is correct and enough! I definitely eat with emotions – stress for the exam – eat, relief after exam eat! I decided to start to day as a fd thinking fasting good for brain etc but after exam it all went to pot!

Looking forward to my weekend away with the knowledge I can start right back in next week and hopefully make a better dent in my lbs to lose jar before the next challenge begins when hopefully a better downward trend will continue. Catch up later x

Day 40, Cotswolds, UK: Non-fast day. Tomorrow will be my last fast day of this challenge for me. I’ve recently been doing 3-alternate day water fasts on weekdays only. I have looked at my tracker graph which shows a satisfying downward slope. I will do a final weigh-in and measurement check on Saturday morning after my fast day.
Are you all going to continue the regime until we all meet up again properly on 1st July? I am, as I still have over a stone to go.
Coda, I think you have done us all a favour starting this challenge….I just happened to join the website a couple of days prior….it was meant to be…
    Thanks x

Hi Merry Me – sadly it was the newbie page that I was reading!
    Here : https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/52-calorie-restriction-v-fasting-for-newbies/
and this is what simcoeluv wrote :
    —-
β€˜Doing 5:2 correctly’ means going to bed, getting up, eating 500/600 calories while you are awake, going to bed, getting up and eating normally – twice a week. β€˜Normally’ means eating your TDEE or less.
    —-
I read that to mean that the 500-600 was the normal and the TDEE twice – which wasn’t what I’d seen MM do on the TV.
So thank you for putting that straight! πŸ˜€
I can’t see a way to Private Message each other on this forum so I can’t tell him that that is confusing.
I do plan (anyway) to just do the 5 normal eating days but far less than the 1700 cals (or I will gain weight!, like 1200 and then the 500 on FD.
I want to go to my brothers wedding on 30th July with as much weight off as I can. That day may easily be a 1700 day cals! πŸ™‚
Have people found picking specific days of the week and stuck to them or varied them to suit events in their life? Clearly odd days will always change – as some have mentioned ! πŸ˜€ Thanks for the welcome.
(I plan to have this as a life change but with more scientific evidence Jason Fung lecture on Fats and cholesterol was really interesting!) Linked from the newbie page. πŸ™‚

Day 40 Scotland. Beautiful day but a chilly wind – cant put the fur coat away yet.
Did OK at Pilates this morning though couldn’t stop my nose running. Not so elegant when you are upside-down!
No problems with fasting today and just enjoyed my poached salmon and salad followed by fresh berries and yogurt. OH ended up with 1/4 of my fish as it was too much, but well within my allowance for the day.
Songbirdme – I feel as you do , a little worried if I stop doing 5:2 and go on to 6:1 to maintain, then I will start putting weight back on again. I have stuck with 5:2 over this month, just as well having increased whilst on holiday, however, I am going to try 6:1 come July and join a maintaining forum to get some tips from those who are doing it.
I shall post my stats on Sunday for the end of the challenge, and hope I can get back to target of 9 stone. Almost there, just need to eat mindfully over the weekend.
Things are hotting up over here with all the referendum debates. Another important one on TV tonight and tomorrow, so we shall be tuning in. If nothing else it cements my way of thinking about things, although it can be boring hearing the interviewees keep backstabbing one another.
Onwards and downwards dear friends TTL

    QuΓ©bec, day 40

    FD on a cold day.
Going very well up to now.
    Good luck to all.

    France Day 40
Sorry no time for anything. Teaching is killing me. Was ill this morning nausea and headache all night. Made student do essay on his opinion of vegans and vegitarians to keep him busy for 40 mins.
    Felt better after lunch.

Having an Italian dish tonight. Parmiagiano, maybe spelt wrong.

Sorry nothing to report, but exhaustion. Weight static. which might be good. NFD
