  • Switzerland – Day 38 – NFD

Feeling much more positive today – and the sun is out, which helps!

Qsue, I’d also wondered if all fat cells were the same, or if more ‘established’ fat was more difficult to shift. I managed to lose the first 13kgs of ‘recent’ fat with just a concerted effort and a strict application of the basic 5:2 rules. This next 13kgs is taking much more effort – but this is the weight I’ve was for most of my 20s and 30s. I’m aware that the novelty of fasting has worn off, I’ve lost the thrill of stepping on the scales each week to find a new, lower weight, and also – probably most crucially for me – I have the habits of 20yrs of mild overeating to contend with, so that what I think of as a healthy portion is actually a bit too much. So I don’t know if it’s stroppy fat cells or my general mentality, or a bit of both – I’ll be really interested in your findings.

There’s so much going on in everyone’s lives – hope the day brings good things to you.

Australia – Day 38 – 4 days to go of challenge.

An eating day today. It is my husbands birthday, so we all went out for lunch, which was a good way to break my 2 day fast, lol. Now cake and pie for dinner. Feeling very full already.

Qsue – I do a 36 hour fast every other day. And have done a few 2 day fasts. I would love to know more about losing fat cells as there isn’t anything that I do differently and some weeks I lose a fair bit, other weeks hardly anything. I think you just need to stick it out for the long haul. I am considering after watching a video on “how to water fast” doing a long one. Like over 3 days. Apparently the health benefits are amazing.

UK day 38 – NFD. Finding my biggest struggle is still with the tin of biscuits in the office kitchen cupboard. I love working here when no-one else is in (eg yesterday) – it’s so quiet and peaceful, but the down side is that no-one is around to keep me from raiding the tin!

Australia day 38. FD today. Fluids all day then stir fried Tasmanian scallops with vegies for dinner. Delicious! More terrible flood damage and now lives lost. Very sad.

UK day 38 NF for me today ,going for a FD tomorrow which will be my last post for this challenge. I’m very happy with my progress not just in terms of weight and inches lost but more importantly the changes in the way I eat and my attitude to weight loss, at the beginning I was obsessed with the scales and whilst I still get on fairly regularly I accept the minor fluctuations and am more focused on health and the long term benefits.

I’ve never been part of an online forum before and it’s been great , I look forward to catching up every day and I’ve learned a lot and had some laughs too, but it the shared highs and lows that have hit home ,it’s good to know you’re not the only one going through this .

    Day 38– Colorado, USA

Worked 13 hours yesterday. On my feet, moving heavy equipment & patients all day. Walked into my house & shoved 2 slices of “Meat Lover’s pizza” into my face before collapsing into bed.

Then got just 6 hours of sleep. I’m pretty exhausted right now. Heading out for a walk/ jog/ run with my doggy, whatever my legs feel up to. Then back to work again. Sigh.

I know when I’m this wiped out, I try to increase my energy by eating more. Since I’m aware of the (Tired = Hungry!!) equation, I will try extra hard to flex my will-power-muscles to fight it!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Day 38 – NFD USA, Illinois

Weighed the same again today but not sweating it. Often morning after a FD I am down a little, but okay with all of this. Feeling good.

    NL day 38
    Wow…..what happened to day 10 thru 37?! Time flies…..
NFD today. Didn’t get a chance to have lunch. Been running all around town on errands.
For nearly 10 weeks (!) I’ve been meaning to go to the hairdressers and today finally did just that. Haha – must be minus 1kg at least!!! I was planning on letting it grow longer so as to make ponytails or such but my hair is too dry. And thinking: if I’m looking good (read: better!) with less weight then I must also look good with a neat hairdo. Right??! Right!!
Tomorrow I’m meeting up with a friend I haven’t seen for about a year so that will be interesting. Looking forward to seeing him again.
Loved your posts of the past days. Lots of reading to do.
K-Lo – thinking of you in these dark days. I visit Breda often. This city has a chapel in the middle of town and it’s so peaceful once you go thu the doors. I always light a candle. Just to remember and to think of those struggling or going through hard times. So I will think of you when I light a candle tomorrow. I can’t post a picture so here’s the url: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint-Joostkapel_(Breda)
HappyMargo- after 13 hours working….what the heck else can you do but attack the pizza and fall apart in bed?! Admiring you too :>
This last week I’m hoping to get to my goal of 70 kg. It’s been so close so often. <sigh>
But in the end it’s a DOWNward lightning bolt. Today 70.3 so I just might make that 70kg mini-goal!
Being part of this challenge has given me so much: laughs, cries, tips, insights, weather reports….and so much more!!
Thank you all SO MUCH for sharing your info, tips, tricks, recipes, downfalls, ups&downs.
Hats off to all of you and specially to Coda.
    Thank you for being… YOU!!

California, day #38. FD today, ready for it.

    Day 38 USA Minnesota NFD
Yesterday was a FD and it went very well. Goal today is to stay under TDEE, especially with 4 year old granddaughter and pregnant daughter over for dinner (I will have a new granddaughter by the start of the next challenge!!!). I just have to avoid the deserts (puddings?) I treat them to. Well, maybe one little nibble of chocolate. πŸ˜‰

HappyMargo, good luck keeping the “Tired Hungries” at bay. Dutch, you are so thoughtful to light candles for others. What a kind heart you have! That *is* a lovely and peaceful looking chapel.
    Best of luck, everyone!

    Day 38. Wisconsin, USA.

I have the kind of husband who can NOT tell a lie. Even when it’s in his best interest to do so. He’s never earned many points in the flattery department.

Last night, my husband told me that my hard work was showing, and then some other kind remarks. He said he’s been thinking about this lately, and just thought to mention last night. This is the upside of an honest mate. I can live on these infrequent compliments for months. πŸ™‚

Interesting that he sees a change. Because, my scale will literally swing 7 pounds up or down from week to week. I was up 7 pounds on Monday. While I am suspicious of the two large glasses of wine I had last week, I also am to the point that I have to laugh a bit about this. It is frustrating, but it’s also almost comical how unforgiving our bodies can be. I have been quite diligent over all. Can’t we just slip a bit of wine in there without making such a fuss? My metabolism is a freakin’ drill sergeant. No mercy.

Again, I’m in the zone this week. No wine for me. I’m pulling out all the tricks for Saturday’s final weigh in. I want to see that low number (145 lbs) again. I’ve seen it twice in the last couple of weeks. Then, I can say I have lost 8 pounds in this 6 week challenge. Even if it is only for the 10 seconds I step on that scale, and before I put on 5 pounds from breathing too much oxygen, and brushing my teeth. Hah!

Have a happy day awesome friends!!!

Hello Day 38 Challenge – Brazil

    Yesterday fasting, not today …..

I plan on doing 48 hours fourth and fifth, have to be thinner or less fat to 18 that will travel to the birthday 79 years my mother, my sisters are much thinner than me, I’m still over 100 kg but on the other hand I have more health because much care for my food, are already two years without sugar and flour.

This challenge is ending … Coda thank you for this opportunity to be here and be able to enjoy the experience of all.

I’ll be here for the next challenge, I think I’m the only one in Brazil.

    A good fast all !!!

Day 38, Non-Fast day in Gloucestershire, UK. Cloudy and humid. Strange though, that, yesterday, a fast-day, I got through 4x500ml bottles of water while out on my delivery, while, today, a non-fast day I only needed 2! Fasting makes me thirsty. I can’t believe we’ve nearly completed this challenge. A pat on the back for us all.

US, Day 38. Thank you all for your kind words about my aunt. She is upbeat as she can be…not that she is recovering, but that she is 92 and has had a wonderful husband, children, grandchildren, etc. I will miss her tremendously but…as life goes on…I’m going to share with you all something very funny (but this may have a US slant).

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the Public Theatre’s annual gala in Central Park (New York City). It was a very entertaining show, with lots of Broadway actors on stage and in the audience. The finale was Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski (I don’t know who I love more!!!!) performing Brush Up Your Shakespeare from Kiss Me, Kate. Without appearing to take any sides in US Presidential politics, I urge you to find the video of this hilarious performance. Meryl Streep as Donald Trump. I am still laughing.

Day 38, Los Angeles. I’ve so enjoyed catching up with all your posts since yesterday — such a lovely group of humans here. Sending support and empathy to those who need it, and congratulations to all. NFD for me, though I think I will try to make it through with far fewer calories than my TDEE. Need to “bank” some cals, since I’m going to be out of town on a roadtrip from Thursday to Saturday — I love using such trips as a green light for mindless enjoyment of chips etc while driving. Will try to minimize that particular “joy” this time around!

Coldpizza – where are you? Haven’t heard from you since day 34????

Day 38 UK and a NFD. I have just read over the last couple of pages of posts and I’m feeling nostalgic already! I’m going to miss this supportive community. I’m glad there’s another challenge to look forward here.
As I’m typing this the sky is an ominous grey and there is thunder rumbling around. I’m out this evening at my book group, there will be wine and snacks and I have decided to allow myself one glass.

    Day 38 (I think) Scotland
Scales smiled and took another pound away from me.
Yet more running around to do with cars today – fed up with garages taking enormous amounts of money for repairs, and the car still not running right. Grrrrr.
Ended up eating lunch out and went a bit mad with chips, but just having berries and yogurt for dinner tonight so will just be under my TDEE for the day.
Thunderstorm finally arrived late this afternoon – it’s a sign We put our summer furniture out yesterday! Another. Grrrrr!
Sorry to hear things are so bad in Australia. I lived in Sale, Victoria for three years over 30 years ago, at the time the town of Cockatoo was destroyed by bushfires. Have very fond memories of people and places, but never had the dreadful rains you’re getting now. Thinking of you all, and keep safe wherever you are in the world. TTL

    France Day 37 NFD
Third day teaching. I am so tired. Student eats the vegan food and has not said anything about his new diet.
I had fasted yesterday but felt vaguely nauseous by lunch time.

Today was the same and I ate scrambled eggs for lunch with a tomato.

Lentil and aubergine chilly tonight by special request. He said he would like chilly con carne again as he had enjoyed it.

    Fabulous weather here right now.

Pacific NW USA: Day 38, FD going for the broke before the finish line!

I’m feeling so great about our 5:2 challenge! I’ve been thinking about self image. I’m sure that throughout my life my body image has been influenced by comparing myself to others, to advertisements, to my skinny family members but I now can say it’s also more about how much I feel in charge of my appearance. At the point in the past when I was at the same weight I’m at now I felt mystified about how I got there, I was very out of control and felt horrible about my appearance. Now, at the same weight I feel in control of my health, my future, I can influence the numbers on the scale and I feel so much more positive about myself and totally own the way I look. And . . . I know where I’m headed. It’s helped me be much more appreciative of everyone’s journey – I’m just so glad I found the 5:2 journey and that I joined it with all of you!

ETJ – where did you find a video on how to water fast ?
HappyMargo – ditto on Dutch’s comments -on a hard physical day you should give yourself some credit!
Edzeko – LOL, I agree, maybe 5:2 will help us expel the evil imps who watch us eat/drink and then mess with our scales
K-Lo – I only found a short snippet of a video of Merryl but the photos were hilarious!

Six weeks sounded like a long time on May the 1st but I found out this can last a lifetime, one FD at a time!

    Australia, day 39 4am!, nonFD,

Capital L life stress happening, woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep so checking in early. K Lo will look that up on youtube. Meryl Streep has to be one of the greatest actors of all time. She was also the 1st actor I ever heard who could do an Australian accent. It’s notoriously difficult to do, and Meryl Streep did it brilliantly!

Just because I’m awake when I shouldn’t be, trying to make myself tired enough to sleep, this is an international thread, and I’ve enjoyed the various nationalities here – I’ll tell you a little about Australia’s other languages. There were originally about 500-600 Aboriginal languages/dialects, now numbering about 150-200 I think. They were all non-written languages. There is another ‘language’ called Strine. It is colloquial or slang language and is made up of corrupted English words or collections of words”. For example the word ‘Strine’ is the corrupted word ‘Australian’ . If you say it very fast and leave off the beginning it starts to sound like ‘strayin’ then collapses further into ‘strine’. “I am going to” becomes “I’m gunna”. Strine is quite an extensive collection of language which is said very fast and somewhat gutterally.

Still not sleepy, sigh……maybe hot milk….
    Merry

    QuΓ©bec, day 37

    Fd today.
OH is coming back tonight from taking care of his sick old parents. One of his brother is taking over. It has been very emotional for him. He is very happy to come back home. Always better live than by Skype ! He’s thinking of hopping on board the 5:2 train. A story to follow !!!

Edzeko, congrats for your succes and please say hello to your husband from all of us in this challenge πŸ˜„

Minols funny how you remind me with the tin of biscuits. I had, for many years, a quite extraordinary boss AND she always had tins of biscuits and candies on her desk ( BTW, a great way to “lure” employees to have a good chat with her). Her office door was always open except that on the days when she was working outside our offices I would close and lock her door ( in fact we would say that we were locking up the biscuits) to help us resist the temptation of eating the whole thing while she wasn’t looking. Seems like the same mental process!!!

ABC1. Go on cooking your chili con carne … So funny !

Sad all the floding and storms in many corners of the world this week.

I would like to write a good word to each and everyone of you. I enjoy this group so much. PLUS it’s helping me improove my English ( witch was one of my secret goals remember Coda?)

Another one of my secret goals is to be able to get into my summer white linen blouse that doesn’t fit at the waist anymore. It’s hanging there and looks at me every day, just waiting to go out for a nice ride !

Wishing you all a great day. Kisses from QuΓ©bec City x

    2nd post:

    Yes…I miss Cold Pizza too!

    K-Lo…watched the video. Uncanny! πŸ™‚

b2F – I understand what you are saying about how feeling in control affects self image. I completely agree.

    Northern Spain day 37
    The countdown begins
Lovely warm sunny day here. Have been flying around the place all day.
Have made good choices today, thankfully
    Salad and fish?
    Tomorrow is another fast day
So far so good and it’s the start of the countdown……
    Cheers

US SE Day 39 NFD. I’m getting sad (and maybe a little panicky) about the end of this challenge. I know we have another one soon and I plan to still check in over the next three weeks. I’ve come to depend so much on reading your stories every day. I really appreciate all my virtual friends!

Aussie day 39 I did 3 FD’s last week which i don’t normally do and i have been so hungry i haven’t done one this week so today is FD attempt no three i’m running out of days lol, actually i think it’s because it’s been cold. Well enough with my pity party I too am going to miss you all, my morning ritual of reading posts while i wait for my OH to wake up i will still check in though.

    Hi all

I can’t believe 6 weeks is almost up!

DebbieQ I think by my reckoning you are a day ahead of yourself. Fishing graΓ± is always first to check in on a new day and Oz have only reached day 39. So good news lol you have an extra day!.

Note for ones self for next challenge to have a note book beside me to take notes on who did what when.

I have decided the new challenge will be on a new thread but a link will be pasted on this thread to redirect everyone but time for all that later.

The only thing I have found/worry slightly is if someone drops out toward the end like coldpizza, what has happened, is everything ok? Things with 5:2 seemed ok up until day 34 with her posts.

Will do a final count of numbers on Thurs I trust we won’t lose anyone between then and when I return on Sunday. Will anyone plan to weigh and measure and take photos after Sunday 12 June? Thinking if you can post weight lost and if measured total inches lost. I will do an awards ceremony on Monday ha ha as best I can in this virtual world.

Last few days – remember plan plan!

Coda, not sure I understand what you are asking us to do.

Will Thursday the 9 be the last numbers that will be taken in account for the end of the callenge ?

Please excuse me if I am the only one who doesn’t understand. Maybe I am tired and maybe everything is clear as water.

    Thank you.

Btw I remember Quebecoise – did anyone else have a goal? One you have achieved Quebecoise as your English is pretty good and that linen blouse will be getting an airing pretty soon.

Merryme we in northern Ireland also run words into one another. Our wee country is sometimes known as Norn Iron – say it quickly. I’ll post a link when I am not using my phone to some of our expression and their meaning.

Thoughts are with everyone one x

Sorry Quebecoise I am talking final numbers of people not weight loss numbers. Does that help?

OK, thank you for the precision. Yes, it’s clearer now.

I hope that Coldpizza is doing fine, that nothing bad happened to her.

    Bye bye for now.

    Australia Day 39 NFD

Good morning from South Australia Day 39
I have just enjoyed reading everyone’s posts this morning.
I have had a look at some information about fat cells and I am still reading.

I have found out that like all the other cells in the body they are replaced so even though I have been overweight for a number of years it is not the same old fat.
I have also found out that if you gain weight when you are an adult you don’t form new fat cells but the ones you have get bigger. There are two exceptions to this rule, firstly if you gain a huge amount of weight and secondly if you have liposuction.
For children it is different again and they can make new fat cells as they get fatter.
The fat cells are just as complicated as I imaged they would be and I will keep reading however I cannot find anywhere yet how the insulin actually gets into the fat call. Is there a little back door none of the scientists have noticed?

All the very best to everyone and Onwards and Downwards

    USA 39 of 42
    NFD going good!

    Qsue,

Im not a health professional so take what I say with caution. As far as I know insulin doesn’t directly “talk” to fat cells and tell them to store fat. High levels of insulin signals the cells to uptake glucose which they need as a fuel so that they can perform the functions that they do. So for adipose (fat) cells glucose is taken up so they have the energy available to perform their function, which is to take up fat. Once all the cells have the required glucose that they need the excess glucose is then stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles. The liver can release glycogen for general use later on. Once the muscles have stored it, it can only be used by that muscle. It can not be released for general use.

Once the glycogen “tanks” are full the excess glucose is converted by the liver into fats (triglycerides). These are sent to the adipose cells for storage.

Still further glucose is excreted by the body via the kidney as urine. Hence pre-diabetics often have an increased level of “going to the toilet”. its your body’s last ditched attempt at saving the situation.

Please don’t ask me what all the different hormones are that control all these processes as Im not a biochemist. Hope that helped?

    Australia – Day 39 – 3 days to go of challenge πŸ™‚

    A fasting day today.

K-Lo — wow! I found some snippets of Streep and Baranski. Incredible! Oh so fun!

I am a singer and retired music teacher who loves Broadway. Have you seen the James Corden Karaoke Carpool touting Broadway? Well worth the 12 minutes!

    http://www.broadway.com/buzz/185085/before-the-tony-awards-james-corden-hosts-all-star-broadway-carpool-karaoke/

Day 38 California NFD. Did my best to stay near my TDEE, hard to do with a potluck at work. I had to leave the break room and go for a walk to get away from all the food. Tomorrow will be my second fast of the week. I am still going to attempt 3 this week. I am behind reading the posts. My day just got away from me.

    Anonymous

    NL day 39 NFD

USA day 38,today was my non fasting day, went well
tomorrow is the challenge will be my fasting day, GN folks

Pacific NW USA: end of day 38 (ever closer to 42!) single FD

Thanks for the low down on the science bigbooty and Qsue. I’m taking it all in order to visualize what I want to happen

SongBirdMe – your James Corden clip was wonderful and a wonderful good night uplift for me. I will pass it along.

Heat continued here today but soon to break. I must not have drunk enough water today which included a 3 mile walk through and around a golf course because I’m ending the day with my first headache since the challenge began. I must be getting cheeky and thinking I can go back to old habits. Lesson learned.

This forum illustrates how full everyone’s lives are in even the small details, habits, families, hobbies and work-a-day world. We are pen-pals who share a common goal to be healthy. So, yes I will be looking forward to reading anyone’s posts over the break as I continue to learn what 5:2 adds to my life.

UK day 39 – FD. I have a very large chunky bracelet on (never normally wear bracelets) to focus my mind and keep determined. I will question every time that bracelet lifts up near my mouth if I know exactly what it’s bringing and if I want to eat it. In a few minutes, I’m logging off from the computer and I’m off to do a whole load of visits – I will leave by the back door, therefore not going past the kitchen where the biscuit tin is. I will remain physically separated from the biscuit tin by at least 1 mile all day. And all my visitees will be politely refused when they offer me anything to eat – none of them know I’m coming, so they haven’t had time to make or buy anything yummy, I will simply ‘be in the area’ and drop in! I have my less than 250cal fishcakes ready, and I will buy a bag of carrots on my way home along with ribs for the rest of the family – which I hate so am not in the least bit tempted.
I am planned in every detail for this FD…it is going to work!

    Day 39– Colorado, USA

Minols, great job planning out all the details of your Fast Day. It’s bound to be a success!

Looks like another busy work day ahead, think a 16:8 or even closer to 20:4 will be quite doable today.

No time for a morning run with my doggy. I slept an extra half hour instead, think I needed it! Will pack up my workout clothes to stop at the gym after work.

US SE Day 39…. again! Sorry about that Coda.. I’m losing track :-). Doing my second FD today. Still hoping to get a 3rd one in on Friday. Good luck all in these last few days.

Day 39.NFD Aus. Still on holiday just checking in. Looking forward to reading posts when we return home on Saturday.

Surrey day 39….I could not post yesterday because the computer refused to work. I had to wait for my granddaughter to sort it this morning! Had a very nice fast day yesterday, and enjoyed breakfast this morning with toast, grilled tomatoes and poached egg.
I would like to ask a question or two, please…What does 16:8 refer to? Also, when checking calories on myfitnesspal, it keeps saying not to eat less calories because your body might go into ‘starvation mode’ and slow the metabolism down. Is that true? I have on most of the days other than the fast days eaten well below the TDEE and on fast days around the 500 calories suggested. Any thoughts on this? I would appreciate any input, and thank you in advance!

    Day 39 NFD USA-Illinois

Sunny and lovely here in northern Illinois. Plan to make it to Curves this morning and do my best to eat smartly.

It will be terrific to continue with as many of you who are able to do so! Thanks so much, Coda, for all you’ve done for us!

Hello everyone! challenge near the end (day 39) and at the beginning of the great path to weight loss.

NorrieB – 16: 8 is the fasting for 16 hours and a power window of 8 hours or you are just skips breakfast, dinner instance 08:00 PM and 2:00 PM the next meal the other day.

I never liked breakfast, was 16: 8 course.

Hi all – just a quick post – I forgot my spread sheet that I use to check everyone in so will do that after work. Just to say I have ordered my bracelet – it will be lime green with black lettering and says – Stay strong – tomorrow is another day.

Catch up later on your posts x

US, Day 39..and a gorgeous day on Wall Street. I finally set free the few pounds I picked up over Memorial Day weekend ( and with the new battery in my scale!).

I had lunch was a friend I had not seen in a year. Her first words … “wow, you lost weight. You look great!” And that felt great.

My hubby swears he’s gaining everything I’m losing.
