  • Coda, ABC1, Third time lucky:

Heartfelt thanks for your welcome and your excellent suggestions, hints.

I agree Coda, first the whole idea is outright frightening. Am indeed one of those who have come a long way, starting as a total skeptic regarding this diet, and now converted and determined. Fasting itself becomes quite compelling when we consider that all living beings must be equipped with the best possible tool for survival while they temporarily don’t find food in nature.

Thank you ABC1 for the recommended articles. This thread – and this website in general – is incredibly inspiring and rich in information.

As for the cholesterol level, this is fantastic news – am glad for you Third time lucky. The more I learn about this diet the more I realise how ground-breaking it is. Something that would deserve a central place in medical research.

Scotland Day 17 and the sun is shining again. Lets hope it will be warmer than yesterday.
Working today, so nothing for lunch, will maybe go for a walk instead. Omelette for dinner tonight with leftover anything to clear the fridge before holidays.
I have been taking two Magnesium pills a day since reading on this forum they help you sleep. and they did until last night, then had a bad night again. Hopefully magnesium will start to build up in my body, and sleep will come regularly. In the meantime, I have found that it is really helping my tinnitus. I suffer badly with this to the point of people think I’m deaf, and it has definitely helped.
Capricorngirl – sugar definitely acts in your body like a drug, giving you a high, then dropping you down low when you don’t have it. The trick is to reduce it gradually, and if you have to have sweet things, replace it with natural sweeteners that are not addictive. Stevia, Honey, Coconut nectar. there are lots of alternatives.
Fishing Gran – please, please be aware that whilst antibiotics are great for killing off infections, they also kill off the good bacteria in your gut, which allows the bad bacteria to multiply, which makes you feel worse than the original ailment. Your immune system kicks in to try to control the bad bacteria, which then gets depleted. Try eating things that are going to encourage growth of good bacteria again. You can google it to get a list of foods to eat, or go to draxe.com where it covers this issue.
Off to work now, have a great day everyone. One day at a time! TTL

    NL day 17
NFD. Still going strong and enjoying it more and more. Am now down to 72.2kg.

TTL- thanks, I do feel I’m in control! And it’s getting easier all the time. Enjoy your vacation!
Back2thefuture- yes, have a look at what you’ve got stored in there and you’ll be surprised. It’s quite fun to do too. Less clutter around you is less ‘clutter’ in your head too. Anybody interesterd: Marie Kondo has written a few books on the subject. There seems to be a spoken version on youtube. So you don’t even have to sit down to read. Sorry I don’t have the link at hand. The book is called: The life-changing magic of tidying up.

I’m no fan of dr.Phil but he said: If you don’t acknowledge it, you can’t change it. Loved that phrase! It’s so true. And the other phrase: You can’t just quit a bad habit. You need to replace it with a good habit. For me that meant stop smoking (only gained 2,5 kg) and start walking.

It’s a lovely sunny day today, temperatures about 18C. It’s a good day for a walk.

Good luck if you’re FD today. Be safe.

UK day 16 FD yesterday , they are definitely getting easier, busy day today ,like a few others I’ve decided end to lay off on the scales and I’ll be having a weekly weigh in each Friday .

US, Day 17…still hanging out in low 121s, and NO complaints! Having a wonderful nonFD breakfast of mashed avocado and salsa on Wasa cracker. Blood results unchanged…which is fine. My LDL has always been high, but my HDLD is way off the charts, so my ratios are excellent. My size 8 slacks are very loose this morning.

Hubby is off to Virginia for a couple of days for work. Son#2 and I will dine on leftover Kimchi Chicken and green salad tonight. I bought two tubs of arugula and lettuce mix for quick salads from my backyard.

US/Day 17 – NFD today but will make a Greek Salmon Salad dinner (approx 171 cals) so looking forward to that :). Fast yesterday went very well, stayed under 500 with liquids only until dinner. Love that I can do that on Mondays. Thursday’s are not as easy because I do a vigorous workout on Thursday mornings and the little bit I do eat before it is barely enough (without feeling sick after the workout). Am enjoying learning this new way of life and feeling very satisfied — but too am learning what proper portions ACTUALLY look like. I believe that at some point I will be able to “wing it” ….but I’m not there yet. MFP and a food scale are my favorite tools! As always, I enjoy reading through all these posts before bed and again in the morning with my cinnamon iced coffee…..I wonder what we will do when this challenge is over?

my third FD yesterday. I found it harder than the first two. i made the mistake of grazing on raw veggies and drinking kombucha

i found it hard to be productive at work.

Next time i will stick with just water and tea until noon at least.

and try to accept that until i’m used to fasting work productivity WILL be harder.

I’d like to give myself a good 6 weeks to get used to this.

    Everyone says it gets easier!

certainly i’ve been eating less on NFD’s – much smaller portions.

Scale didn’t move this morning. 136lbs.

    Have a great day everyone

USA day 17 / 25 to go. NFD.

Yesterday was fasting day, and I stayed way below 500 cal. Visit to gym, sweating at zumba class, relaxing steam room – my typical Monday. Today scale showed me 144.0 – my high limit of official HEALTHY weight! Since today is NFD, I decided to celebrate with smoked salmon sandwich, coffee with a little of brown sugar and soy milk as a creamer for breakfast. Probably was not very smart move, because after the breakfast my weight became 144.8 – overweight again.
AHH, Still today is the day, when I was “healthy” for about an hour! 😀

Stay positive everybody and happy losing!

    USA Day 17 NFD:

I did good on yesterday’s fast day..but was very hungry for dinner. It felt much harder than usual. Guess it’s like that sometimes. I think I may need to plan my FD better. Have my portion set out for dinner, etc. I was feeling very deprived and hungry..I just had to remind myself it’s just for one day and I can have a (fill in the blank) tomorrow. I had a headache in the night too. Oh and funny..I had a dream I was making hamburgers and while I was cooking, ate a piece of whole wheat bread and then I thought “Oh no! I am fasting today and already had my 480 calories!” Haha

Today is a NFD and I am going to focus again on entering things in MFP. I think I still need to. I didn’t do it over the weekend, just tried to eyeball it and guess what everything was, but I am about 75% sure I went over a bit. And my weight is up a pound since I weighed myself before the weekend. Which brings me to another conclusion: what BrightonBelle said…one weigh in a week. I will do it Friday too.

Rainy and cold today! (where did our warm sunny spring days go?) I am taking the boys to the library (I like to save library days for rainy days) then while they nap I will do a workout video.

    Have a great day everyone!

Congratulations, Coldpizza!!! That is an awesome achievement! Keep up the good work! I think you deserved your celebratory breakfast (sounds yummy)

    Strongstrongstrong,
It will be getting a little bit easier, but still every fast will be a challenge.
I actually concentrate better at work when I am fasting. I do water/coffee/tea fast until evening, and than depends. Sometimes I just continue till morning, and sometimes to drink some hot 1 or 2 cups of broth or miso soup (very little calories).

    Stay Strong! 🙂
It is miraculous how that “diet” works for everybody with such various weight. Your 136 lb is still a far away goal for me. 🙂

    DorothyG,
    Thank you!
You make me laugh with your dream. This really become the way of life, even in dreams! Try a cup of hot broth (15-20 cal) at evening of fasting day, it will help for headache.
I was always water fast for 36 hours (until morning), but start having difficulties to sleep. Than I took somebody’s advice on this forum to try broth. It really helped me.

I’m up for this. I started 5-2 on May 2, so I have completed 2 weeks. I have been very happy with it: I feel more energetic and sleep better. I have lost almost 6 pounds which is a motivator but I am just as concerned about preventing diabetes.

How many calories are you eating on FEED days?

    rlw66,
I also find out that Monday is the best for fasting. I can screw up Wednesday or Friday fasts easily, but somehow always strong on Monday.

Your Greek Salmon Salad sounds yummy. Recipe?

    K-Lo!
121 lb?! I am positively jealous! Trying to catch up with you! 😀

    Hi UK day 17 FD

Well I have had another cull – the following have been deleted as I haven’t heard from them – if I have made an error and you still want to be included apologies and let me know.
    Anky
    Annalondon
    Asauer
    Baby_depardieu
    Bouncy
    EJ1196313
    Indycat
    KiwiKate
    Leebaby
    Lifesabeach
    Lisa57
    Mirs
    Whaley50
    Zeldablue3

We have had a few new challenge members names popping up but unsure if they are actually going to join us or were just popping in to say hello. I have included them but can delete them if they don’t post – numbers stand now at 47.

Strongx3 – if you intend to stay, can you start your post with where you are from and the day you are on (corresponding with the day of the challenge ie 17th May = day 17) – that goes for the very few who still are not doing this. Strongx3 would you like to update your profile – just that I am nosy and like to learn a bit about everyone lol – thanks
Just out of interest we have 1 from France, 1 Brazilian, 1 Swiss, 1 Spanish, 1 Dutch, 2 Canadian, 9 UK, and 15 Americans and a few unknowns which I may have missed along the way or they don’t start their post with where they are from.

Someone asked what are we going to do when the challenge is over – well I was thinking we could have a little break and as I know some (me included) still need to lose weight – I thought we could have another challenge. Not sure if it should be the same format or how we could update it to keep it fresh or if you would be happy to keep it as it is (any ideas very welcome). Should it be the same length (6 weeks) or a shorter one of maybe 4 weeks? The ones that have reached goal are most welcome to partake as I think we all like to hear from them to give us others inspiration that we will one day join their ranks.

Epione – do you know about TDEE – calculator at top of this site. Eat to your TDEE on non fast days (I don’t personally like the term ‘feed’ days) eat a quarter of that on your fast days. Start your post as I described above to Strongx3 🙂 thanks

UK 17 – just checking in as I’m having a NFD today, just a wee break as I’ll need to fast again tomorrow before guests arrive on Thursday. Good luck getting to the end of the day if you’re fasting.

Day 17 in Los Angeles. Big congratulations to coldipizza for hitting a “sanctioned” healthy weight — Terrific! I bet that feels good. And everyone else in doing so well. I did well on my FD yesterday. Toying with the idea of doing a second, back-to-back FD today. I’ve never done that before and I don’t know if I can do it. But I’m going out of town for 5 days for son’s college graduation (and won’t be posting here much, coda, if at all until we get back home), and it will be very hard to keep to my TDEE on those days (and impossible to fast!). A second FD today would be like money in the bank, but … so daunting …

Day 17. Wisconsin, USA. Today is a NFD. Yesterday was FD. I am happy for people when they say their FD’s are easy, or getting easier. But, this is a place for honesty, right? Reading about these brilliant FD’s also leaves me feeling slightly discouraged.

I feel pretty strongly that there will never be a day in my life when I abstain from food for 24 hours, and will NOT feel the pain. I had my 9th FD yesterday, and I don’t think it felt one bit easier than my first FD.

So, that is the negative. Here is the positive: I have grown in my confidence. Meaning, after 9 fasts, I now have confidence that I am capable of plowing through a day of hunger. I can have low energy, sharp hunger pains and even feel a bit light headed, and I can still be productive at work and at home. So, perhaps by this standard, I could say it IS getting easier?

There are so many great tips on here. I am incorporating many of the tidbits I’ve learned from others into my own routine. I wish I had time to be more specific, and give all of you smart people the credit you deserve.

Coda…assuming I cross the finish line on this challenge (and I believe I will), I am TOTALLY up for another challenge of any kind.

Thank you for allowing me to think out loud. Keep up the GREAT work.

Edzeko, my fast yesterday got tougher over the course of the day as my spine is doing some hinkey and painful things right now. I grabbed a handful of nuts more than once on the way to the chiropractor and definitely did not stay under 500 calories (and 1/4 of my TDEE is in the 300s!). I also had a cocktail with dinner. So no…yesterday wasn’t easy. Nevertheless, my weight is fine, so I can’t complain today.

I am on a heating pad at my desk today. Not a happy camper. Maybe my body needs the fat to stay buoyant?

rlw, would also like Greek Salmon salad recipe

Edzeko…btw, son#1 lives in Madison and works in Verona.

Day 17– back in Colorado, USA

Back home from visiting family… and restaurants all over town too! 😉

Bummer, I’m up 2.5 lbs, but I’m pretty sure it’s mostly water. Hoping by the time I get my 2 Fast Days in this week, I’ll be able to knock that weight gain back down again.
Had a wonderful time on vacation, honestly, it was worth it. Now back onto the wagon!

(I only missed reading yesterday because it was travel day, but this thread is moving quickly. I’m going to fix a hot cup of black coffee & enjoy catching up with all the new posts now.)

Day 17 UK: Hello to all 47 of us! Non-fast day today. Tomorrow I have some minor surgery under general anaesthetic, so perhaps better make that a fast day! I’ve got to be up at 5am for the drive to Bath, which normally takes an hour and a half as the roads are so slow. Shouldn’t be a problem at that time however…hope to sign in tomorrow when I get back….but, Coda, bear with me if I forget!

K-Lo…I’m sorry you are having back pain, and a tough FD. I do not wish tough FD’s on anyone. 🙁

What a small world regarding your son. I work in corporate relocation in Madison. Wouldn’t that be a coincidence if we helped your son move here?

Edzeko, even though FDs have gotten easier for me over time, they are not entirely easy! And I slip up / cave in to temptation sometimes. Just keep at it!

Edzeko, he works for Epic. ??? Son#2 just spent the weekend out there. “Mom, why is the food in Madison so great?” He muled home lots of cheese “orphans” from Fromagination, but left behind the Vom Fass olive oil (grrr!). I am proud to say I look at all the cheese and said “I can have that tomorrow.”

Dutch– I’ve read Marie Kondo’s book. Very interesting!
I wasn’t able to fully implement her methods (except for the fantastic storage/ folding ideas.) Her cleaning out method is pretty one-fell-swoop & ruthless. I’m having better luck with baby steps, choosing a closet or dresser or kitchen cabinet at a time, making my way thru entire house. Will take time, but my home is already feeling lighter!

(Plus, gives me great projects to work on to keep busy & out of the kitchen. No temptation to eat while organizing & cleaning!)

    Hi uk day 17

Thanks Micky42 and Ciren2 noted. Hope you enjoy your trip Micky42, just be mindful and hope all goes well with surgery Ciren – some people will go to any lengths for a fast, lol only joking!

K-Lo…I guessed he worked at Epic. That company attracts the brightest and the best.

I promote my city for a living, so I am completely biased. But, I do love Madison. There are countless restaurants and grocery stores here where you can find delicious, locally produced, real food. There are no excuses for not eating real food in this little city.

One time, I was giving a candidate a tour. He actually complained about the lack of fast food restaurants here. I wasn’t sure how to respond to that.

Wisconsin just received a world championship title for its cheese. And, I agree with you, Vom Fass olive oil, and salad dressings are outstanding. 🙂

I just logged on before going to bed.

Coda – I would be interested in another challenge. Maybe you could start the same way on the 1st of July for 6 weeks, give people a couple of week break? Not that I’ll be taking one 😉 You are doing an amazing job keeping everything on track too. And thank you for starting this challenge. I was hesitant at the start, worrying about having to check in everyday, but it really does keep you in the mindset of what you are doing!
    Just my opinion 🙂

Edzeko, did I miss something? How did k-lo know about Madison lol?

Please don’t despair you are doing great. You are still here and still posting whereas already half the ones who signed up have dropped out – that says something. Just keep on doing x

Coda, I have spies. Edzeko also posted Day 17 Wisconsin…and I responded my son lives in Madison. But the spy thing also works.

    US SE Day 17 FD.

Coda, I certainly would love to continue on to another challenge or whatever is decided when this one ends. I do still have a lot of weight to lose and I find reading the comments so helpful when I feel my resolve waiver. I got through yesterday under TDEE. I agree with most, I do very much need to weigh my food and keep record of my calories on MFP. Years of overindulgence, and especially here in the US where portion sizes tend to be large, I need the accountability. It doesn’t mean that I am not living and eating … it’s just keeping me in check so I don’t lose sight of what my goals are.

    Checking in. FD no probs.

This is my last post of the day, promise. But, while I’m thinking of it:

Coda – You should be rewarded for your efforts. I’m not sure how to go about doing that, but this thought is in my head.

I wonder if there is a way to add an exercise element to a future challenge. I know some people have made very funny comments on their poor opinion of exercise. I love these jokes. But, maybe a challenge would be enough motivation to get us past the hate?

Okay. That’s enough from me. See you all tomorrow.

    U.K. Day 17

It’s a nfd here and everything is on track.

Coda – I would love another challenge and agree that some firm if exercise would be good – although please be kind – I’m a newbie at this wol. This challenge finishes the day before I’m off on holiday for a week so I will be ready to take up the mantle again when I get back. As it so happens I then go away again 7 weeks later so a 6/7 week challenge would be ideal for me. I also want to focus on healthy calories rather than just focussing in totals. After only two weeks I feel so much better – I happily walked up two flights of stairs today, rather than taking the lift, AND could breathe at the end! Now that’s a result!

Pacific NW USA: Day 17 FD
White tea, putter in garden, PT appointment, more tea, 2 mile walk and then poached egg, avacado and green veg broth for dinner – that’s the plan. Made the brothy soup yesterday after walking 12,000 + steps so NFD yesterday went well.

Qsue – appreciated your reminder about how the unexpected can modify our plans sometimes. I guess that just helps us learn to accept life’s ups and downs and do our best while we live it. Thanks.
Dollybird – you mentioned cooking for your family – my OH also is living through the experience of the recipes I’m trying and he loves it. However he’s shedding pounds so quickly and he doesn’t have any excess too lose so he adds bread, crackers, cream, and snacks on store bought cereal to add a few calories to my meal plans – it isn’t fair!!!
Merry me – your historical perspective was very inspiring, thank you!
ETJ – what a lovely picture you painted, I’ll carry it in my mind’s eye today while I fast

Good fasting all, 17 days Brazil

Today here is colder, so I climbed 11 floors in my work twice!

I feel strong and with great enthusiasm!

I made my blood tests, all perfect markers!

Hi ok so you obviously need insider information to know Madison is in Wisconsin lol? The knowledge you gather on this thread is amazing!

Ok I have a few ideas for next challenge but they will not be announced until the last week of this challenge. You have to be focused on the job in hand – no slacking off. We are almost at the halfway mark and I am guessing the weeks will fly in. So like any challenge when you pass the half way mark I want you all to focus on the end game. I want you to say YES I did my best. Visualise how you will feel when I hand out those medals! Picture in your minds eye when you weigh in for the last time, see not only a difference in being lighter, but a difference in how you look and how you feel. Your achievement in completing this challenge. I want you all as you go to sleep tonight to visualise your success – really see it – did you see it in colour?

Has anyone thought or been offered by a family member a reward for completing this challenge (other than a medal)?

My reward is knowing I have helped in a small way 40 odd people round the world achieve something so worth while. Who in turn have helped me when I faltered. Thank you but keep going we have not finished yet@

Greek Style Salmon Salad (for those who are interested)

Cook the salmon in a foil packet with lemon, dill, salt and pepper.

Chop butter lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, kalamata olives and just a bit of crumbled feta and toasted pita bread croutons.

Toss salad with lemon juice plus salt and pepper and top with salmon.

    Approx 171 calories

**i don’t have any pita bread so I don’t include any croutons** (so maybe a little less yet in calories but I leave it at 171) 🙂

Coda, I would be interested in continuing on in some sort of challenge in any way as well. I too thing you deserve a huge THANK YOU for starting this and keeping it going and organized, I can say I really look forward to reading through these posts each day. I have a long ways to go yet, so I’m in for the long haul 🙂

Pacific NW USA: Still day 17
I didn’t realize I had one whole other page to read!

Coda, I am definitely up for continuing the challenge. “Talking and listening” to this peer group has made such a positive difference for this newbie. I don’t feel like anyone else would care as much as you 47 about what I’m doing to improve the rest of my life.

Eczeko – I agree that Coda has been a most excellent host! Coda, you have set such a good tone and somehow attracted such wise and caring people to this forum – I feel truly amazed that by a quirk of fate I heard about the 5:2 and your challenge was the first thing I saw on the fastdiet website, I really don’t know how I would be doing it without this group – or is that just today’s FD talking!!!

Day 17 UK. NFD. A very busy day. stayed within TDEE just, but not going to get hung up on a few extra calories on nf days. Fast day tomorrow. Hope everyone is still on track, keep going! Looking forward to weigh in and measure on Thursday.
    Good luck!

Ho Coda, cor next challenge whoopee!! I was hoping you’d carry on!! I thank you from the bottom of my heart, this has been life changing!! I just love reading everyone’s progress, so motivating, keep up the good work!!

USA Day 17 Sunny Minnesota 1 pm
NFD today. My FD yesterday went ok, I stayed under 500 cals but over my 25% of TDEE. I think it was the carbs and Riesling I had Sunday eve. I find myself more hungry when I fast on Monday, after the weekends, than when I fast on Thursdays. But I crunched on celery and cucumbers at noon and had my protein and fat meal at 6p. Tonight, a new restaurant for dinner with my OH, daughter and granddaughter. The menu looks healthy….lots of spiralized veggie noodles and organics. A lot of wild caught fish and some grass fed beef and lamb. It will be interesting.
Coda, I join all the other ladies in their praise of you as our leader, and I’m so pleased to hear there will be another challenge! I think the 6 week duration is just enough to feel doable but also to really see results. If you add an exercise element: please be gentle! 😉
Ciren2: good luck with the surgery tomorrow. Cold Pizza: congrats for hitting your goal. Edzeko: I’ve had a couple not-pleasant FDs, which for me I can usually attribute to my NFD intake of carbs. But I don’t have children around or expend the energy they require. Go easy on yourself, I would bet you’ll figure out the way to make FDs more comfortable with time.
SongBirdMe: I finally watched that TEDx talk you linked to. I sent it on to my daughter so she can be reassured that I’m not crazy for doing 5:2 and that there are benefits over and above losing weight. Now, do I really need to walk 30 min. if I’m going shopping for an hour before dinner? Hmmm. Nope, I don’t think so. 😉
Thanks to everyone for posting and sharing. Good luck today!

UK day 17 NFD for me today. I’m finding the debate about whether or not to count calories interesting. In the past I have always found diets which concentrate on calories just made me focus on food in an obsessive, joyless way. One of the things I like about this WOL is that either I don’t eat or I eat and really savour what I am eating. At the start I did calculate the calories in a few of my favourite batch soups, but now I just do it by eye. Having said that, we all have to find the way which works the best for us, it’s interesting how we are all finding our way through the challenges and triggers.
Fishing gran how is your finger? And ETJ (or anyone!) sorry for my ignorance but what is a poddy lamb?!

    Day 17 – Northern Spain

    Quite happy this week!
Think I’ve managed to control my in between days – or so it seems.
Ate normally today and didn’t overdo it – which is my mission
We will have another fast day tomorrow.
I am fasting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday – so far so good!
rlw66-I LOVE your recipe for salmon – but how much salmon do you use? 100g, 150g?

dahliafan – I think a poddy lamb is a lamb who knows how to use an iPod or maybe it’s a lamb that is reared by hand – an orphan that needs to be fed by bottle. I prefer the idea of a high tech lamb listening to music!!!!

Coda – thank you for keeping us in line – I am forever grateful
Onwards and upwards – or should that be onwards and downwards?

    US day 17
    yesterday was my NFD,went well.
today is my FD,the scale is scaring me showing increase in weight but decided to leave the scale and only use it once per week
I made 2 sandwitches put them in fridge each range like 200-250 calories so will eat them once my hunger reach to the extreme and can not function but at least i knew i made healthy choices under 500 in fasting days
    wish you all happy dieting

Hi Dahliafan ha ha I had to Google poddy lamb as I had never heard of that expression either. As I said what you learn on this site is amazing!

Thank you for all your praise but you guys are the ones who have done the hard work and without your posts supporting each other we would not have a challenge. I am not very religious but I do believe in God breezes. They are the little things that happen at just the right time, at exactly the right moment to blow you in the right direction. They fill your sail and off you go.

UK day 16 nonfd and under tde 😀

ETJ what a lovely scene to have at your home, what i wouldnt give to have lambs etc in my back garden! Although im not sure my rotty would be too thrilled!!

Have i missed something along the way about this broth…. Is there a recipe that people are using?

Re, another challenge i think that would be great. I am nearing the finish line for losing 1 stone but i still have a few more to shift and would love to continue to have this support. Exercise element could be fun i agree!

For anyone of a like mind, i have started attending a weekly mindfulness group and as part of this i do a daily practice which can include mindful eating. Even if you are having the tiniest meal possible it takes so long to finally munch it down you either feel satisfied or forget how hungry you were to start with! Could be worth a go for others if anyone fancies it 😀

Dolly bird – sorry about that … I use about 100 grams give or take (3.5 to 4 oz) 🙂
