  • EDZEKO – Brazil’s situation is very sad … I’m from the South more precisely Cutiba the Paraná state capital, my family is from the inside almost the border with Argentina, unlike the media shows our life is hard work we do not have Carnival and football not too unlike other regions of Brazil.

This government has taken has left the country in catastrophic situation, was a populist and corrupt government has spent more than he could and left the country in debt.

My brothers lost everything they had industries and many employees, now only left debts.

I have mathematical training and lost my job and now receptionist job earning very little, even so glad not to be unemployed.

I would love to meet me and make friends, my email is baggioflach@gmail.com and my facebook and pinterest is Anaide Maria Baggio Flach if you want to add me I will be grateful.

Aus day 13 and day 14. Hi everyone, Yesterday didn’t go to plan but I’m not beating myself up for it though I’m paying the price. It’s a quarter to three in the morning here and I’m sitting in bed and feeling very uncomfortable.

    Ciren 2, I’m approaching 64.

Everyone keep up the good work. It’s fun and motivating reading all your posts.

Today I plan to eat healthily and lightly. I’ll weigh in on Sunday.

    Cheers

    Onahealthyhigh, hello and good luck.

Northern Dawn – please remind me what 16:8 means. Is that fasting every other day? And also thanks for the advise. I listened to my body yesterday and moved like a sloth, actually I didn’t have much of a choice. I think I’m getting enough protein. For instance yesterday an egg, veg and fruit for breakfast, salmon lox and celery with tahini dip for lunch and tuna boats (tuna salad in half a red bell pepper) with broccoli on side for dinner. I’m feeling better today. But you are probably right about allowing recovery time. Now that I’ve had some beginning success with 5:2 I’m in a hurry and probably over did the daily instant increase in walking. Thanks!

I just made the cheesy crustless whatnots! I had two to break my fast, with a good salad. Very nice! They would be better with cheddar, I had to use parmesan. I hope they freeze ok! My mix made nine little beauties!

Québec, day 13. ( goes so fast !)

    NFD
I prepared a nice poched egg on half an English muffin. Added spinaches, dried cranberries and raw pumpkin seeds. May sound bizare but very good.

Thank’s for all your good words concerning the loss of my parents. It does feel special to be an orphan. My sisters and I decided that we are now each other’s mother. We had dinner at the restaurant, the three of us to celebrate Mother’s Day ! That was fun and hearthwarming. We are planning on celebrating ourselves each year ( even though only my younguest sister is a real mom ).

A friend is coming in for dinner ( btw, here, we say supper ). Luckily, she is also dieting so ouf !!!! She is bringing a homemade chickpea pate with Kavli hole grain crispbread and crispy fresh vegetables. I am cooking a homemade seafood pizza and a big salad. As desert a fresh fruit salad ( I am studying the possibility of adding a tiny bit of pernod to give it a humphffff). The danger will be the wine, as usual. To help, I draw a mark on my wine glass with a permanent pen. So I know that it’s 3 onces to the mark (75 cal).

I might decide to do anther FD tomorrow.

    Have a nice weekend everyone.

i am very late to join you but i am starting my first day today of fasting
my only problem always is weekend I always get much calories during saturday and sundays.
    Good luck everybody:)

    Scotland – Day 13
Temperature yesterday 26 deg. Temperature today 9 degrees. Welcome to Scotland!
A work day for me today so a big breakfast (2 bacon, large mushroom grilled, 1 poached egg) then salad for lunch with cubes of Goats cheese plus a few almonds. Dinner Sautéed chorizo, sliced portobello mushroom and a can of mixed beans. OH had some pasta, me none. Strawberries and blueberries with Coyo Yogurt after and feeling stuffed. Haven’t worked out the calories yet, but will be way under which is what I was aiming for today. Fasted yesterday, scales this morning up to 9 stone! Yuk, don’t know how that happened (might have been the Viennese Whirl I had two days ago!) There is no kidding myself. Eat these high sugar, high carb food and it is going to pile on again. I try very hard to steer clear of anything with wheat (or grains) in it as I get a reaction, but just sometimes, I give in anyway, knowing what to expect.
I know I’ve said it before, but I found it easier to just not buy certain foods in. I haven’t bought a packet of crisps or biscuits for nearly a year, and I don’t miss them. Come on, you can give up the Gummy Bears!!! If I really fancy cake I make one of my own clean cakes. Hardly any sugar, no wheat, then I can have a piece knowing its not destroying my health. In fact my store cupboards are quite bare now to what they used to be. Now my fridge is full of raw meat/fish/vegetables, that I buy regularly, and use everything up before I do another shopping trip. I actually save a lot of money now, although I splurge on quality organic produce where I can. The fact that portion sizes are smaller now is a big help.
Tomorrow is my last chance to prepare for our trip to the Isle of Wight next week. So I will be doing some baking to take with us, and the cooler will be full of lovely Scottish smoked salmon, organic eggs from down the road, and anything else that I might struggle to get. We are driving down so no restriction to filling the car up.
So looking forward to a break. Things seem to have been a bit topsy turvy since Christmas, but settling down now. Love my new job, and am grateful that at 68 years I have found something that suits me so well.
Off for a long soak in the bath now with Epsom salts and Lavender oil. I have been known to fall asleep! Have a great weekend everyone, and just try and be mindful of what you are eating. Count the calories on MFP BEFORE you put it in your mouth! TTL

Anaide – I requested your friendship on Facebook. I’m afraid I do not speak Portuguese, but I will enjoy your photos. I’m very sorry to hear about the economic troubles you and your family have suffered as a result of greed and corruption of those in power. You would think that the human race would eventually learn this lesson.

TTL hope the weather stays good for you. we had our honeymoon in the Isle of Wight 36 years ago next month!

Crush you are welcome to join. You start your post with where you are from and the day we are on. So even though you have just started we are on day 13 or 14 depending where in the world we are. I see you don’t have much info on your profile go on update it and tell us a bit more about yourself. Post once a day at least and if you can’t let me know. You have to show commitment to the challenge.
Quebecoise I was at a restaurant that used glasses which had a mark on the glass for the measure. I asked where they got them and they gave me one to take home. It is quite a shock to see how little wine you get for 175ml lol

Back2thefuture: Thanks for posting the video regarding the biggest loser contestants. It just confirms that we are all on the right track. I am tired of the yo-yo dieting and hoping the 5:2 way of eating is the answer for life long weight loss and maintenance when I ever get to that point.

I went to breakfast and my husband picked McDonald’s. He likes the pancakes. So after studying to menu (I haven’t been there in ages) I decided to pick the oatmeal and fruit for 290 calories. It was so sweet I could not eat it. I immediately looked up the nutritional information and it listed it at 32 grams of sugar. I could feel my pancreas cursing me, if it could talk it would be saying– “What are you doing? You gave me a great rest yesterday, and now today you are making me work threefold? Just for that, I am turning this all to fat!!! I just carefully picked out some fruit while my husband chowed down on the BIG breakfast. On the outside of the container it listed that it had 32 grams of whole grains – it should state 32 grams of sugar instead! On a positive note I did find an apple stem in my search for fruit, so they do use real apples.

I think I will drink water and tea for lunch and eat a nice healthy dinner.

Cizzy, my once a year McDonalds breakfast is a sausage egg cheese biscuit…hold the biscuit please. A holdover from Atkins days.

    USA day13 of 42
    Friday the 13th
Hope everybody does well this weekend.I”M heading out early tomorrow for a well needed vaca!Planning ahead and bringing healthy snacks. Most stay mindful of my choices. Weighed this morning ,down 1 lb
    Have a great weekend!

Hi everyone, interesting read. I’ve just joined the forum. Two weeks in to basically 5:2 with at least one other day with about 1000 cal, hoping to do 4:3 but something always gets in the way. Seeing good results but really want to keep going. I did 5:2 2 years ago but got instant results and then stopped fasting and maintained for a good while before slowly piling it all back on (pretty consciously to get through writing up my PhD thesis). Now I’m really hoping to keep this up long term and so joined the forum for inspiration!!! I’ve had 4 textbook fast days so far and they are definitely getting easier as I find my way. Will fast tomorrow but we’ll arrive at friends in the evening where we’ll stay til Monday so I will eat with them in the evening but try not to overdo it.
So far I really love how it is affecting my non-fast days. I feel really satisfied, even indulgent, but am eating a lot less than before I started two weeks ago so feel safe in the knowledge that there will be results, even if steadily over the months.
All the best everyone! Our journeys and circumstances are all different but if we’re on here, we have one thing in common. Cheers

UK Day 13 a good FD I think, kept busy and drank lots of water, plus my two cups of breakfast tea which I really savour on a FD. Boiled egg salad for supper. I’m hopeless about exercising but I decided to get away from my desk at lunchtime and go for a 20 minute walk. I felt so much better afterwards I’m going to try to do it regularly, so thank you all you encouraging lot! Weighing tomorrow and then trying to keep on plan over the weekend. I find it so much easier during the week as the routine carries me along more smoothly.

    Day 14 South Australia
    Good morning to everyone
I have just enjoyed reading everyone’s posts since yesterday.
Thank you for explaining what Couch to 5 is FishingGranny. I think my joints prefer aquarobics and walking but I shall also have a look at the Pilates for Runners link if just to build up some knee strength. I shall go for a 30 min walk today for my exercise and put another $2 in the exercise jar.
Peanut Butter is a trigger food for me and I never have a jar in the house. It just tastes so good with hot buttered toast and everything else, one of my all time favorite foods. I have my FD today and I am dreaming of PB.
It is good to know that fasting can reboot a sluggish metabolism and I am finding Dr Jung’s site very interesting although so far Dr Moseley’s 5:2 is just fine for me.
I hope you all have a successful day

Cody, thank you very much for the information, because i am late, should I count days of fasting according to you all or according to me( today is my day 1 in fasting, so should I say day 1 according to me??
thank you and I am very excited for your company all:)
I have a question on NFD(non fasting days)should I be limited to the allowance calories intake according to my weight or should be limited to just feel 80% satiety? because I usually do not count calories especially when i am very hungry but I can pick healthy choices as much as I can
    thank you

Hi Crush and welcome. We are counting the days since the 1st of May and not fast days. For me in Australia it is day 14.

On NFD Dr Moseley suggests eating normally. I managed to lose close to three stone by eating normally and not counting calories. I ate healthy, wholefoods, drank a glass of wine each night, checked portions by measuring and reducing the size of my plate.
I don’t have a sweet tooth, so that helped, and eliminated temptations such as potato chips and savoury biscuits from my house.

Many people count calories and eat to their TDEE. this wouldn’t have worked for me as it would have been too much like dieting and not a long term WOE. I’ve been at goal for a year now and working on maintaining.

Hi Crush thanks for updating your profile 🙂 if you would start your post USA day 14 (if it is May 14th where you are). You can add if it is a fd or nfd. You can pick whatever days you want from now that you are going to fast 2 or 3 whatever you want. I suggest planning it on a calendar. If you Google blank calendar you can print one off. Plan your fast days round your life – have some thing on that week, then change your fast to suit. Have you worked out your tdee? You can do this on this site. This is an estimate of what you should eat on a non fast day. On fast days you eat a quarter of that. I will copy a link for you in the morning that may help answer any questions you may have. Other than posting everyday the rest is up to you. Find what works for you and something you can live with.

I am not usually up this late but was doing taxi for my oh.

We are a very supportive group and if you have the time to read some of the posts at the beginning it may help.

    Hi back2thefuture,
Scanned to see if you got your answer, didn’t see it…

16:8 means 16 hours fasting with an 8 hour eating window.

For example, eat dinner at 6:00 PM, then fast until 10:00 AM the next day. Resume eating for 8 hours (10:00 AM until 6:00 PM.). I believe this is also referred to as “Leangains” method by Swedish nutritionist/ trainer Martin Berkhan.

dear Cody, thank you very much for the information,it was very helpful:),me too I do not have sweet tooth but my temptations are just like you the crunchy stuff like chips, biscuit, tea cookies and crackers…wish you great weakends and thank you for the challenge:)

Aussie day 14 Qsue I think it’s best to find what you really like and can comfortably do aquarobics sound good with a sore knee I will look up that pilates as well.I have been keeping to my three meals on a NFD no snacks not worrying to much about TDEE as that was more than i could eat i think snacking and wine have been my downfall now I really enjoy my meals.I also find it helps to check serving sizes just because it tastes good doesn’t mean i should eat it all lol.

    Hi Back2thefuture

I just saw your question and HappyMargo’s response. She is exactly right: I have an 8 hour window of time when I usually eat. I try to hold myself to two meals during that time and to minimize snacking.
HappyMargo, I had to google “Leangains” since I’m not familiar with that, or the trainer guy. WOW, quite the physique!

I started doing the 16:8 intermittent fasting a couple of months ago, before I knew about 5:2. I started mainly for two reasons: (1) to try to get a handle on my out-of-control snacking throughout the evenings after supper, and (2) to get some relief from the heartburn (GERD) that I was experiencing. It has helped immensely with the heartburn! And it sort of prepared me for fast days: I know that I will eat nothing after 6:30 pm, whether it’s a FD or a NFD, and so I really don’t struggle with hunger after that time. I’m never really hungry until 10:00 in the morning, anyway.

I’m hoping that by not eating for 16 hours I will reduce my insulin levels and also my IGF-1 levels.

I’ve read that some do 16:8 for weight loss, but I didn’t lose weight doing just that. I do think it might have prevented me from gaining more than I had, since I stopped my late night snacking.

Sorry I was late with a response, but I am on the forum in the mornings and often don’t get back on until the next morning. And thanks for responding HappyMargo! You had it covered! Good night, all!

Day 13 Illinois NFD today. More ‘out to eat’ but did quite well. Just heard this TED Talk about more benefits of fasting. GREAT news for our brains! TED Talks are almost always very interesting and worthwhile.

    http://www.cosmicscientist.com/ted-talk-neuroscientist-shows-what-fasting-does-to-your-brain/

US SE Day 13 NFD. Weighted in today. 2 lb down. Happy with that. Family visiting till Tuesday. I had 2 glasses of wine with dinner and was worried I would go over my TDEE but when I added to MFP, it was fine. I think it’s going to be a challenging few days especially as we will be out a lot.

Love reading all the posts. Have a good weekend all.

    Australia – Day 14 – 28 days to go of challenge 🙂

Today we are going to check out the local hockey team and hopefully if all looks good sign the kids up. They were already asking whether hubby or I would be interested… Hubby can’t, but for me, maybe next year, lol. Feeling really tired today. I have gotten into the habit of going to bed late. It’s warm here today about 20*.

    Fasts – 7 Non fasts – 7

Pacific NW USA: end of day 13 FD
Today went incredibly smoothly, drank iced tea till dinner of roasted veg and chicken. Staying busy all day helped. I had lots of energy in complete opposite of yesterday, so appreciative for that.

HappyMargo and NorthernDawn – thanks for the info on 16:8, I’ll google for more info. Sounds like it would dovetail with 5:2.
SongBirdMe – thanks for TED reference

    Tomorrow 2 weeks!

Hey Tex! How is the challenge going? I live next door in New Mexico. I went to a 4:3 after a few weeks on 5:2 and lost a bunch…65lbs. Working on my last 20-25lbs and I am HOME! Its really been a lot easier than I thought it would be. I had to lose it fast for medical reasons so that was a motivator also. But I just did what you guys told me to and voila! Keep at it Tex! If I can do it, anyone can do it!

UK – day 14…and 1lb gone – yippee! Weighed in early as I might manage 24 hours away if the weather is good.

    NL day 14
    Great Minols!
Yesterday went to visit my sister. 3,5 hour roundtrip. Didn’t count calories and this morning it seems it was my TDEE spot on! No weight gain either which is pretty unusual for me. Maybe I was eating too little all these years? VEry possible. Losing weight by eating more?? I’m thinking about adding a fast day. Not sure if I will succeed. Have a great day everyone :>

UK day 13 Met my OH After work yesterday , the weather was lovely and as usual on a Friday eve went for a drink, I stuck to my alternating with water theory and had 3 half pints of lager , had a good long walk home and then had a glass of wine with dinner , all still way under my TDEE .sneaky weigh in this morning shows a 1lb back on . I’ve been doing so well with my food but this shows ,for me it must be the drinking and I’ve got to cut it out , short term at least , off to exercise now and have a good think

    France Day 14

Weighing in this morning I find that I lose one and a quarter pounds more on a week that includes fasting, as opposed to a normal dieting week. I tried a two day water fast this week but felt giddy by breakfast time this morning and was glad of my oats and nuts.

My previous regimen had been to consume 1000 calories every day following the glycemic index. My TDEE is actually 1500 at the moment.

Overall, however, I am pleased with my progress in terms of weight loss, but I still wish that my circumference would diminish around my waist.

Caught a program extolling the virtue of including chillies on the menu since they burn calories. I will include one in my dinner tonight and see how it goes.

I am so envious of those who include a glass of wine. I fear that is where my problems started, and so I have not consumed alcohol for the last five weeks. By now I can’t decide if I miss wine or food more.

The only exercise that I have done is to watch a video of a man practicingTai Chi. You know, the one where he is in an oriental garden with a home made pond. Honestly I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to exercise, and I found myself wishing he would move over a bit so I could get a better look at his pond. I was having imaginings of maybe having one here at home.

UK Day 14, I have just weighed myself and I’m thrilled to have lost 1.5 kg so over 3lb. I did 4:3 rather than 5:2 this week so that’s probably why. Have enjoyed catching up on everyone’s updates, Brighton Belle don’t worry too much about your blip on the scales, I had a couple of glasses of wine last weekend and while the scales showed it the following day they were back down again the day after. I think alcohol maybe causes temporary fluid retention? So worth it at the time though, and this is a long-term lifestyle so we have to enjoy life too! ABC your description of getting distracted by the pond in the exercise video really made me laugh, I’m terrible for that as well, particularly anything with gardens in. Incidentally we put a (tiny) pond in our garden last year and it’s wonderful, the birds love it and at the moment it’s full of tadpoles. Happy weekends to all.

    Day 14– USA (not Colorado)

Spent yesterday going ’round visiting family. Seems it always involves food!

Had low carb, high fat breakfast with Mom at Waffle House. Held myself to just a few nibbles of their famous cinnamon raisin toast. Smelled heavenly.

Then off to Churchill Downs for some horse racing. Family did lunch at Derby Cafe. Couldn’t believe I wasn’t even hungry/ tempted.
In my earlier life, before 5:2, intermittent fasting & LCHF, I’d have taken every opportunity presented to eat! I was always hungry! Now I can join others who are eating & not be tempted (as long as I have a beverage.) I can just chat & enjoy their company. That’s new!

Lots of walking around the grounds of Churchill Downs admiring the gardens & majestic horses. Ran some errands around town, then off to meet others for dinner at The Irish Rover. Shared plates of aubergine pâté with chopped tomatoes, steamed mussels with capers, cabbage rolls with lamb, & scotch eggs. I enjoyed half pint of Smithwick’s. Was strong & skipped the soda bread, heard it was good.

    USA, Day 14 / 28 to go.
Cannot believe that 1/3 of the challenge is already done. NFd today. After 3 days screw ups, I am trying to regain my determination. Need to keep it under TDEE.

USA/Day 14 – supposed to be a NFD today but I think I’m going to try a FD today (so this would be my 3rd for this week). Feeling motivated and hoping to keep the progress going. Have a mini-goal I’m trying to reach by June 6th, and I really like the “control” of the fast day. Have a great day all!

Day 14 California USA. Good morning. Today is a NFD, also a work day for me. I am keeping to the 16:8, skipping breakfast and packed a light lunch. The evenings are my downfall, but planning to keep under my TDEE today. I took a sneak peak this am on the scale and liked the 175.5 lb reading. But, I had some chocolate Ice cream last night. Tomorrow’s reading will most likely reflect my splurge on ice cream.

Happy Saturday to all! Best of luck sticking to your eating/fasting plans today.

Day 14, New Jersey, US. NFD…made my wedding day weight yesterday. What a high! Massage therapist asked “What have you been doing!!” … other than to my damn back.

Posting a great recipe….Steamed cod in kimchee. Made it last night. Really delicious, healthful and low carb/cal. While the photo shows it served over white sticky rice, I used leftover quinoa.

    http://www.rotinrice.com/2013/04/steamed-cod-with-kimchi/

I really can live this way.

UK Day 14: Hello everyone again. Extra fast day today, doing well so far. I am about to eat for the first time in nearly 25 hours. I am trying to boost my somewhat feeble weight-loss so far. Sunny and quite cold here in the Cotswolds. Working day at the Royal Mail, finished now until Monday.

    USA (MN) Day 14 Saturday 9:30 am 40F (4.4 C) Brrrrr
NFD but may do a FD. Yesterday I kept under TDEE. Today I plan to bundle up and walk 30 min. I’m having fun with my new Fitbit. It’s motivating. That may pass when the newness wears off. It’s making me go up and down the stairs more often, at least, and my quads need that!

Congratulations K-Lo! What an accomplishment! The recipe sounds good and I think I’ll try that soon.
No joy on the scale for me this am. Up a half pound since yesterday. But I’ve stayed within half a pound of total loss of 10 pounds since Apr 11, so I feel like that is *real* loss, and I’m thrilled with that.
Good luck over the weekend, everyone!

Day 14. USA, Wisconsin. ABC1…thanks for the laugh. I have heard watching people excercise really torches calories more than doing the exercise yourself. Kidding, but laughing burns calories, so thanks for that story.

Motivated today!!! Will eat well and move a lot. Will not fixate on pounds. Will embrace a new pattern of eating for longevity and vitality. (Fixating on pounds is a demotivator for me – not for others, I am sure.)

USA Day 13: NFD for me today. Staying under my TDEE today and going for a family nature walk. It’s actually it’s quite chilly out. Making a healthier carrot cake tonight for a treat. http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/carrot-cake-recipe.html (NorthernDawn – they give substitutes for making it with no wheat..I thought of you when I saw that and it is sweetened with bananas and dates (or raisins can be used if you don’t have dates). I haven’t done the calories on it yet, but I will just have a small bit and probably leave off the cream cheese frosting.

    Enjoying reading everyones posts!

K-Lo – Congratulations on reaching your wedding day weight! That’s awesome! I just found a picture of when me and my husband got engaged and I’ve set that weight as my new goal..(which was probably my wedding weight too).

Best of luck to you all over the weekend!

Coda – Consider this my Sunday check in Day 14!! Will stay under my TDEE and preparing for my FD on Monday.

Just checking in. Normal day some lovely porridge fruit and nuts for brekkie with my own honey. Mushroom soup with home made stock and lively fresh homemade high grain bread for lunch. Noodles with chicken and veg a la Waggamama type thing for dinner. Weekly treat of dirty martini is always something to hang my sanity on. Depressingly I will still be Non weight bearing when our challenge is done 🙁 just boring

    UK day 14

rlw66 – I’m with you. I’m on my second nfd and really like the structure of a fd. As a newbie I don’t want to go hard and then burn out and, truthfully, there are some days which are a better fit for a FD than others but I am liking the feeling of energy that I am gaining – as well as the weight loss of course.

Day 14, Illinois, NFD. Doing fairly well, and as many of you, I really enjoy reading all your stories. I make a Egg McMuffin on whole grain English muffin that is good coupled with V-8 juice. Can of sardines on Triscuits for lunch. Will do my best not to over eat at a buffet supper this evening.

Aussie day 15 quick check in might not get on for a couple of days.

Pacific NW USA: Day 14 NFD

Weigh in results for Week 2 – down 2.8 lbs but no change in “girth”. I have my sights set on the first of many clothes/outfits that I haven’t been able to wear in the last year, therefore I’m anxious to see the changes in the tape measure start to show up. I’m not a particularly patient person so that necessary attribute change may be a side benefit of this program.

I am so happy to read about all of your daily progress, we are all moving forward! Minois, Daliafan, Cizzy2, K-Lo so happy for you – I would be happy to return to my 2nd wedding weight!

Aus Day 15. NFD. A beautiful day yesterday spent with my grandchildren and grandpuppies in the park. Lots of tiggy/chasey – my version of HIIT! Grateful that I can still catch the four year old!

Weighed myself this morning. As expected my weight was up. I usually retain lots of fluid after a day of heavy carbohydrates. I’ll know in a day or two if I did any actual weight damage. Hopefully not.

Tomorrow will be a fast day. I’m currently doing 6:1. If necessary I’ll add a second one this week.
Thank you for all your inspirational posts.

    US SE Day 14 NFD.

Back2thefuture.. 🙂 same here with returning to 2nd wedding weight… and there was probably 20 lbs difference between the first and second.

Staying on track so far today despite eating out for breakfast. Now I just need to get through dinner. Fingers crossed!

Day 14. UK. NO day all good a long bike ride and lots of gardening! Under TDEE. For day tomorrow.
