  • Day 10 Illinois – pouring rain so no outside work today. FD went pretty well yesterday, salad supper may have been a little over 250 calories as I finished up some (fake) crab salad that was leftover. I agree with others who enjoy exercise on a FD, but mine is just at Curves, not running. Will do really well today, I vow, on my NFD.

    Day 10 — Colorado, USA

Today is NFD for me. But not hungry yet this morning, so skipping breakfast. Never before thought I’d be able to head into work without a breakfast first. Now I find I prefer it that way!

Coda- Dr. Jason Fung has an excellent post on his web site about the prevalence of snacking & how it has changed us. Not only the add’l calories piled into the day, but also the added times we secrete insulin & store fat (instead of burning fat) by constantly snacking. I’ve completely gone off snacking or grazing since I read it.

I’ll go look for Dr. Fung’s article & try to post a link…

I located this one article (wasn’t exactly the one I had in mind) but I must hop in the shower & get off to work. I’ll look more later…

Until then, here is one post regarding the Perils of Snacking (such a name!)

USA Day 10: NFD for me today. I went over my FD calorie count by 70 calories last night. I was doing fine with my salmon, salad, and mushrooms..but my husband got some multigrain tortillas out and I ate about 5 of them. boo. Still….I’m going to be really good today and try to stay a couple hundred under my TDEE to try and balance that out. I feel good this morning though! and want to make healthy choices today. One of my kiddies is sick..so we will be having a rainy day at home and keeping pretty chill. It’s harder to be home with ALL the food ALL the time (I am a stay-at-home mama). We are usually out doing something. So goal today is not to snack, eat healthy meals, and do a pilates routine or weights for exercise…and help my little guy feel better!
    Keep it up everyone!

US/Day 10 – fast day went well yesterday! Challenged myself to go until dinner time to use my calories and I was able to do it! NEVER thought that would be possible for me! Remember to stop and appreciate all the little challenges along the way to our big goal, whether that be weight loss, or a healthier you! Made the scrambled eggs, peppers, feta and spinach dish for dinner with a piece of semi-dry whole wheat toast — it was awesome! Today is a NFD and I’m off to an hour of Latin hip hop soon (love that class!). Goal for me today is to be conscious of my choices and stay under my TDEE, and the bigger thing — to eat when I’m hungry — not because the clock says its time too! Have a SUPER day all!

US/Day 10 – not such a great fast yesterday. I ended up with a cocktail or two with dinner (swordfish tacos!) and then some nuts after. And the scale was not kind this morning.

BUT all that being said, I noticed that my bra cups may be getting a tad loose. OH FRABJOUS DAY!!!!!!!!!!! So fat is moving OUT.

I also started the fast diet on April 12th but have only just seen this post and so I have joined the group. I accept your challenge since I am totally new at this. On May 1st I was 74.6 kilos. I need to get down to my BMI weight which should be some time in early June. I am 5’6″.

The title 5:2 is confusing. I have been fasting on one day every three days, but have restricted my eating on the other days to reduce all bad carbs. Today I weighed in at 73.3 kilos so I think I am about on track?

I take the dog for 3 km walks twice weekly, and probably less than a km on the other days. I am thinking of joining a class in the village hall. Last time I looked in they were all running on the spot, but this week I could see them stretching which must be more my thing. I have arthritis and cannot do aggressive exercises.

My weight gain has mostly been relevant to lack of movement because of arthritis flares, and probably drinking too much wine. I have given up the wine for the moment. I mentioned to my doc that I am on a diet and she was impressed with my efforts.

I have been fasting from one evening meal through to the next. Then I eat one meal which must be nutritious.

I have been following the idea of reducing IGF-1 and I am confused with the idea of reducing protein. I find it hard to calculate protein on all that I ingest. Yesterday was a fast day and I broke the fast with a dish made from aubergine, onion, chick peas, and spinach. It included quite a lot of spices and is very tasty. Then I eat blueberries, and an apple. I drink herbal teas, and Badoit water.

I am pleased to find a group where I can read other people’s progress at the same time as my own.

Day 10 California. I had a challenging FD yesterday due to my work assignment. I had to eat very early and was not hungry. Then I had to work in a position for 5 hours that I could not leave. No water or tea to drink. By the time I got home, I felt out of control. I drank a lot of water but it wasn’t enough. I lost my focus and ate more than I should have. On a positive note, I missed out on the Coldstone ice cream work provided everyone. My scale was good to me this am with no gain or loss so I am happy about that. I am keeping to the 16:8 and I think this is helping me. I have not had breakfast for the past month and I really don’t miss it.

Today is a NFD for me. I am hoping to get back on track today.
    Wishing everyone a successful day!

    Hi All

Thanks HappyMargo for the link – very interesting reading – profit before health. It was Jason Vale (juice master) in one of his books that made me look at advertising and big companies differently. I am now skeptical and ask why do they want me to eat or drink that – is it for my health or just to make them rich.

Does anyone have a secret goal they hope to attain by the end of the challenge? I would like to be 7lbs lighter than when I started on 1st May – it would be nice if I managed more but would be really pleased if I got that. Another step toward my ultimate goal. I am always reluctant to put my goal in writing in case I don’t attain it – so it is a secret shhhh!

Hi ABC1 – just saw your post – welcome 🙂

Start your post where you are from and they day you are one – I see you have some info on your profile – a good start lol. You will be on day 10 along with other UK and Europe posters. You can put FD or NFD if you wish and if you can post everyday – if you can’t let me know and I will mark that down. It is a fast moving thread – already on page 13 and only day 10 of the challenge but you will soon get the hang of it. Most of all I hope you enjoy being part of this worldwide group.

Coda, is my secret goal a secret if I tell you? 😉

Sorry ABC1 I should have said most of us who do 5:2 plan the week with two fast days and 5 non fast days (5:2). Eat within a quarter of your TDEE calories (see above in this site to calculate your TDEE – total daily energy expenditure. Eat on non fast days to your TDEE. Some tweak it about a bit – but what is important is go get a plan that you can live with. Plan – write it on a calendar what days you will do what as it easier to keep to it but the nice thing is, nothing is set in stone so you can change if about a bit if needs be. Go for it!

Hi K-lo off course it is lol

USA, Day 10 / 32 to go. FD yesterday was not exactly 36-water-fast as intended, I had 1 cup of veg. broth (20 cal), and miso soup (40 cal), so i am happy with overall results. The scale agreed with me today – 145.8 (for the first time!) I know that it will not stay after today’s NF day, but still, it is nice to see some support from scale. 🙂
NF day. I am having eggs for breakfast, they are so tasty after the fast! Brought frozen food for lunch, so I know how many calories there.
    Good day everybody! Stay determined!

Hope you can all understand my typing errors as I just re read what I posted to ABC! oops! I am sure you get the gist of what I meant to say.

Hey there, from the Dordogne, France. Please may I join your challenge? I have been trying the idea of fasting since April 12th when I decided to eat nutritious food and stop drinking white wine for at least a month. I had got out of being a size twelve some time ago and was approaching 80 kilos when I began my sole attempt at dieting.
It would be great if I can join you. I have read all the posts now and can really empathise with you all. I have not read any books on the subject, but a friend told me she was on the 5:2 diet and explained she had to fast. I read up on the idea behind fasting on the Internet and got hooked on the idea. I have been eating about 1000 calories for three days then fasting on the forth day.
Yesterday was a fast day. I eat nothing from one evening meal to the next. I drink Badoit water, and herbal teas in the meantime.
I now weigh 73.3 kilos today so it is dropping off steadily, about two pounds weeks I think. I want to get below my BMI but that is some way off yet. I am about half way there. I do not seem to be losing size however.
My waist is not shrinking as I had hoped, nor is the bust. I am hoping this will eventually happen. I suppose I am losing weight from all over though.
It is wonderful to have found this thread.

Hi ABC1 – see above my response to you – as I said it is fast moving lol

Switzerland Day 10 – nearly 1/4 of the way through!

NFD with friends coming over to dinner. Have a lovely day everyone!

Oops, forgot to report that I also went to zumba class and steam room yesterday. 🙂

UK Day 10: hello again from Gloucestershire. Weighed myself this morning after FD yesterday….and I’m still the same as at the last weigh-in last Friday….NO!! I have only lost 3 lbs since the start of the challenge. Feeble. A wet day on my round at work today and when I came got home I indulged in some comfort-eating. It’s just gone 3pm and I intend to stop eating for the day. At least I can see where I’m going wrong, that is emotional-eating.

    Thanks Coda!

I could not see my post and thought I had posted it incorrectly. As you say, the thread moves swiftly. I have not got clued up on the lingo! I think maybe I have been eating slightly too little. Still I am pleased that the scale continues to drop!
I got out my summer jeans and found they are all too big! I am off to London next week planning on a small shopping spree.
I find it is better to get really busy on fast days, I do long walks to keep me away from the kitchen!

USA (MN) Day 10 Around 9 a.m. on a very rainy Tuesday

I weighed this morning after a FD yesterday and I’m so surprised not to have gained anything from my weekend of overindulgences! Down 4 lbs since May 1! And 8.5 lbs since April 11.
Before yesterday my last FD had been Wednesday. I don’t think 4 days in between fast days suits me. It seems to throw me out of rhythm. Yesterday was the hardest fast day I’ve had as I was hungry most of the day. I think I’ve learned a few things: I can not eat my main protein and fat meal in mid-afternoon and then *treat* myself to a bunch of (binge of?) carbs as my last meal of the day before fasting. Also, if I don’t get enough sleep it will affect my appetite.

I had less than 380 calories yesterday, most at around 1800 hours (6 pm) in the form of smoked salmon and half an avocado, and greens. I did have to have some bone broth around 2 pm and cabbage soup about an hour later to make it to dinner time. Before that I just white-knuckled through my hunger with coffee, tea and water.
I’m not hungry at all this morning and will wait until after 1200 to eat lunch in order to maintain my 16:8 way of eating. Goal is to stay under 1500 calories with healthy, low-carb foods.

Coda: you always have such great insight and give us thought provoking posts, thank you! I can’t help adding that I wake up looking forward to grabbing a cup of coffee and getting on this forum to read about everyone’s experiences. Love it! Have a good day, everyone!

Day 10, Wisconsin, USA – This forum is so fun! I read a post, then click on the poster’s name to remind myself who is speaking.

Coda, my secret goal is to be able to remember who everyone is on this forum. 🙂 Not really, but I am trying, and it is fun. I find the unfamiliar colloquialisms, descriptions of countries I have not seen, and even weather reports fascinating. This forum is making this challenge enjoyable and interesting.

As for my own update: My FD was extra challenging yesterday. I went to my daughter’s track meet straight from work, and did not get home until 8pm. I had only eaten an apple at 1:30. I pushed myself well past my comfort levels. I felt exhausted by bed time, partly because of the cold weather at the track meet, and I also think in part because being hungry all day tends to wear me out.

How good it felt to have some coffee with cream this morning. Felt like a meal! And, I guess that’s the point of all this. I have a solid plan for staying within my TDEE today.

Cheers! – No one in Wisconsin says “Cheers”, but I just wanted to sound as interesting and clever as everyone else.

Edzeko – you made me laugh out loud with your cheers! Maybe you could bring it to Wisconsin…start a new thing. We don’t say it in Indiana either.

    Uk Day 10

Hi all – aren’t we all doing well to keep going?

Today was a NFD and I had planned my daily meals and allowances. Lunch turned out differently to what had been planned since my meeting ran on – but I used MFP to track and adapt in order to keep in the allowance. Will weigh in properly on Friday morning after my FD on Thursday – but the scales are definitely shifting!!

    Brazil 10 day challenge.

I have done 23: 1 every day, I’m feeling very well, although I do not feel that is required every day, when it appears a commitment I have the freedom to do fasting.

After work I go to physical exercise, have done HIT, I never imagined that 56 years old could run 15 km / h, run one minute rest 2 minutes, for 15 minutes.

Already I do Lowcarb there about 2 years and fasting short ha about 6 months, at that time I lost 20 kgs, but I have a lot ahead ainda1

CODA congratulations on the initiative of the forum, a great idea.

    Thank you!!!

    Day 10 Québec

FD yesterday. Everything was going just fine untill I got TOO hungry and had to jump in the peanut butter jar with a tablespoon. Grrrrr, not proud of myself. I finished my day at about 600 ca, I consider not so bad after all. But have to remind myself that planning ahead is the road to success.

I noticed that it helps me when I drink herbal tea instead of espresso coffee as I usualy do. A good trick for me.

NFD today and I’m happy and on track.

I will do some hitchhiking on Enzeko’s post and say that my secret goal is to improve my English hihihi !!! ( I am French speaking and living in the beautifull Quebec City ) This forum is indeed fascinating on many aspects and greatly supportive as well as a great English teacher 🙂

I tried different weight loosing plan and always got discouraged because it was compicated and I was loosing so little that I would loose my motivation. Since I wasn’t even getting close to my goal, I would get back in my old pattern to eat that emotion. Gaining weight and eating chips BECAUSE I had gain weight !

Now I fell I am more and more able to see long term. When craving or a bad emotion comes by I instantly get in mind the progress and it helps me hold on. I lost almost 4 pounds since the beginning and very, very proud of myself.

Once again, thank you Coda and everyone in the forum.

    Bonne journée !

    Hi

Edzeko you made me laugh too so cheers! I also had to look up ‘colloquialisms’ so I have learnt something new! Well done on pushing through.

NorthernDawn – thank you for your kind words – made my day!

Good work everyone and so glad you are enjoying the craic (there is a new one for you) you may not find it in the dictionary but if you google it – Craic or “crack” is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland and West Cumbria, north west …) very apt for this thread me thinks.

If you enjoy something you will stick with it much more than if you see it as a chore.

Bom trabalho ANAIDE! Parabens! You lost a lot of weight. I like your determination.

    Hi all,
Southern California, day #10, FD and I fell great today, full of energy. I’m having a smoothie now and later, around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, I’ll eat a big salad with some sardines in it.

The smoothie that I made today is from: baby spinach, banana, fresh mango, raspberries, orange tea plus a little orange juice (no sugar added).

Merci Quebecoise – Je suis si heureux que vous appréciez faire partie de ce défi

Ha Ha I hope google translate is good and I haven’t put something rude!

Your English is a lot better than my French (non existent) so well done!

Obrigado Anaide – obrigado e bem feito. Estou tão feliz por você também está gostando de ser parte deste desafio.

Translated I believe and hope should say

Thank you Anaide – thank you and well done. I am so glad you too are enjoying being part of this challenge.

    Well done Coda !!!

Quebecoise – Your English is impressive.

Coda – I simply adore a good round of “craic”.

Thank you Edzeko. I just came back from two month’s vacation camping in South Florida, that helped me a lot to improove.
Now I have to practice finding the right word to express my tought. I am learning so much now …. plus feeling uplifted by the group to acheeve my new WOL. I love it !

UK Day 10 non fast day today, back on the wagon tomorrow

    Scotland Day 10
Goodness me Coda, you didn’t tell us we had to be linguists on this forum!!!
Afraid I only speak Scottish and English, with a little bit of Aussie and American thrown in! I think I’m going to have trouble with the Irish! LOL

Work today and kept myself in check when it came to lunch in the staff room. delighted to say someone else had eaten all the chocolate pastilles, so that took temptation away. I have been very good today and calorie intake is sitting at 670 for the day. I have one more piece of Chocolate coconut slice to finish with a cuppa later on, then I will stop, so today should be below 1000 calories, making up for my slip yesterday. This is the great thing about this way of eating, if you lose the plot one day, you can put it right the next, nae bother! (That’s Scottish!) great work everyone, still very impressed with all the commitment you are showing, but do remember, this is a way of eating for life. Just ask yourself, can I do this for the rest of my life? if not, just take it easy and go back to the basic of 5:2 as written by Dr M.
I’m still sitting at 8st 13 3/4lbs today, bang on target. Next fast day is Thursday. Skinny wishes to you all! TTL

Aussie day 11 HaHa good laugh this morning reading the posts. Hubby can’t eat after breakfast today till after surgery tomorrow arvo so i will do FD today and keep him company might do a third FD on Friday make up for my overindulgence on Mothers Day. I too was caught up in snacking three meals plus three snacks a day hard habit to get out of look at the clock see it’s 10am must eat 3pm must eat never hungry how stupid.Pat on the back everyone for sticking with it.

Hi TTL – Google translate is wonderful lol! Well done for maintaining so well. Do you just do 6:1 now or do you still fast 2 days. It is so nice to have someone who has reached their target as a beacon for all still with weight to lose. Thanks for sticking around. I think you and I are the only little voices left now while chipmunk is off on more travels. Lifesabeach called in at the beginning but not since. Wonder how they all are?

US Day 10-NFD. Quebecoise I think your English is fantastic… I would barely have noticed that it wasn’t your first language. Maybe a couple of things 🙂
Coda I am quite familiar with have a bit of craic 🙂 I moved to US from Ireland 25 years ago.

I got through my FD yesterday. I really wish I could go the whole day and keep my calories for an evening meal but I seem to have such a hard time in the 2-4 timeframe that I just have to have something (and that’s even after having a piece of fruit at noon)… and come to think of it maybe that’s the problem…maybe the fruit is what causes the hunger later. Thursday is my next FD…. I’ll cut out the fruit and see if it helps. Keep up the good work everyone!

Just read the perils of snacking. Thanks for the link, If we all stop buying the the snack foods think how much we will save in our pockets and on our health.

DebbieQ – that’s what it is all about – trial and error. Hope it works!
    Where did you originate from?

Does everyone use the tracker on this site? If not I highly recommend it. I was filling mine in and i can see at the beginning where I had a steady decrease, then had a few ups and downs but overall still going in downward direction. Then end of January I lost momentum and stopped putting in my weight. I only started again when this challenge began and although I gained a little I was still less than when I first started. It is nice to see the graph going down again. If you have not tried it – give it a go. Every little helps!

Uk day 10 nfd here, daughter being home is completely throwing a spanner in the works, super busy rushing around and lunches/teas out. Loving her being home but it’s at the expense of my fasting days. She’s away until the weekend so I’ll be cracking on from tomw.

Day 10 UK. NFD. Not kept under my TDEE today circumstances were against me! But tomorrow is a FD and I’ll be right back on track.

Day 11 Aus and a FD!
Couldn’t agree more with Coda. The fast tracker is a great motivator.

Yesterday I’d planned to fast but felt headachy and tired so I decided to shift the fast day to today. That’s what I love about 5:2 – the flexibility.

Just read an article ” Why crunchy food can help you lose weight.” Apparently it leads to an audible crunch effect that helps us eat mindfully as long as we do it in a quiet environment! Crunching potato crisps (chips) whilst watching a movie doesn’t do it saddly.
Can’t help chuckling at the thought of all of us around the world crunching on carrots.
    Happy munching,
    Cheers from Australia

Hello from a very sunny Spain.
Had a NFD today and everything went well.
Had cereal for breakfast, salmon and veg for lunch and a piece of homemade pizza for dinner. All in all it went well. I don’t feel hungry but right now I could murder for a bar of chocolate or a cold beer with a packet of crisps. I have just realised that I have acquired terrible habits over the years.
They say that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks – well, I am not Lassie!!
My motto for this challange is undo and relearn.
Hope you are all doing well and not harbouring vicious thoughts about getting your hands on forbidden foods! !!

    Cheers

    Hi Debbie,

I’m Irish too but have lived in Northern Spain for 24 years.
I love the craic and like most Irish people I was born to party – hence the diet!!!
    Ah well!!😊😉

Need to lose some pounds and fit back into my clothes.
We all seem like a motivated lot, I am sure that we will stick with this diet and see it through.
    Bye

Coda.. I was born and lived in Dublin till I moved first to New York and then 15 years ago to South Carolina. Hey Dollybird… northern Spain is beautiful… I envy you!

    USA day 10 of 42
Coda you didnt catch me I posted 10 of 42 yesterday also, thought about it this morning. Getting ahead of myself having so much fun or just that (diet brain).
NFD doing well going out to eat, looking forward to Greek salad with chicken!
Think tomorrow will be a FD!
    Have a lovely evening!

Australia Day 11 NFD – Hi all, another good NFD yesterday and I have my meals all planned out for today and for my FD tomorrow. Someone in the thread said they know they need to plan to succeed and I agree – if I haven’t planned my meals and I get hungry I just eat whatever is quickest and for some strange reason high fat and high carb foods seem quicker than anything else (or is that all in the mind! 🙂 ). I have been doing a lot of walking since starting the challenge. I walk for 20 mins on the way to work every morning and between 70 and 90 minutes every evening but now my knees and hip are protesting and I am limping around the office. I just want to work through it as I love exercise and know how important it is for diet and general health. I agree with everyone re the snacking just adding to our calories. Unfortunately I think when the “health experts” started recommending snacks they also said we needed to reduce the size of our main meals accordingly but we all only heard the first bit, not the second!
Have a good day all and … cheers 🙂

    Edzecko,
I do the same thing: keep clicking on names to jog my memory on profiles. It helps knowing “oh yeah, she’s a Nurse” or “that’s right, mum of five!” It’s fun *getting to know* so many interesting people!

Also, track meets & wrestling matches? You have a very athletic family! Hope your son’s arm is healing up nicely.

(Thank you to all the active posters on this Challenge, you’re helping me stay on task!)
