  • Australia Day 16 NFD over TDEE but ate less than I would have before 5:2. I have been keeping up my daily walking so hopefully that balances some of the calories. I hate being fat, I hate being uncomfortable in my clothes, I hate the weakness in my knees, I hate the looks on peoples’ faces so why can’t I stop eating?

    Day 16 Melbourne NFD

Short posts when using mobile phone, as it’s just too hard!

But have to say, @johnnyr – ROFL!!! “Foie Gras death knell style” hahahaaaa heeheeee love it and will surely use it πŸ˜‰

    Day 16 NFD Sydney

@johnnyr – Yes I’m pretty happy. It’s taken me a long time to be emotionally in the right space to start.

Some NFDs I’ve gone close or slightly over TDEE too and some well under BMR.
I aim for my goal weight BMR on NFDs (around 1650 cals).
All FDs except one I’ve stuck to 500 cals or a little over.
2- sometimes 3 FDs a week. 3 can feel too much and lower my energy.
I’ve started HIT too, but barely doing anything the past few weeks as have been on a really early shift and then its been too hot to exercise in the afternoon/evening.

Do you think you are doing too much? I noticed 5 FDs a week and lots of HIT. Maybe if you have a slack week you’ll lose a couple of kgs? :-^ I read somewhere to mix it up if you’re plateauing.

It may also be that I was carrying a lot of water and my body is clearly dropping it fast.

GO ALCOHOL FREE – IT HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT:
The other thing is I quit drinking for the year on 1 Jan 2017. I wasn’t more than a social ‘average’ wine drinker, but it had really packed the kgs on. It also made me eat more. Alcohol and overeating had contributed to puffy inflammation in my body from insulin overproduction and I suspect I was pre-diabetic.
I started Fast Diet 3 weeks after quitting drinking. It was impossible for me do before that.
I may start drinking the odd glass of wine again socially next year, but I’ve made a pact with myself I won’t drink until I’ve got my body back in balance both with weight and fitness. I think we kid ourselves that alcohol is ‘safe’ and even good for you, but it really isn’t. I’m not missing it. At first I really missed the weekend wines, but now I rarely think about it. And I FEEL AMAZING.

Anyone looking to stop drinking – whether just as a social drinker or a deeper problem – I joined this amazing supportive forum and it really worked for me: http://www.hellosundaymorning.org
Hello Sunday Morning because you really do get up earlier feeling brighter if you haven’t had a few wines on Saturday night!

    Long term goal weight: 73kg
February challenge Goal weight 79kgs (7kg loss)
    Jan 22 weight: 87.7 kg
    Feb 1: 86.7
    Feb 4: 85 (1.7)
    Feb 11: 84.5 (0.5)
    Feb 15: 83.8 (0.7)
    …
    [Feb 28: 79 (7.7 kg in Feb)]

    Monkeydo,
I stopped drinking for a year, two years ago for a New Years resolution. I felt great and have never really gone back to regular drinking.might have two drinks per week.
It was tough socially as most of my friends drink, some a huge amount but eventually they accepted it. Now they frequently say how healthy I look and how much energy I have, wonder why?
    Healthy food, healthy body.

My nails need some help though, chlorine swimming pool water is really during them out. Any tips?

@jojo58 – I know right! It’s weird that it’s a surprise, but not drinking at all feels great. Many of the beliefs we have about drinking are just not true:

You can socialise without it. In fact drunk or even slightly sozzled people seem incredibly boring.
You can destress without it. The studies show it is actually detrimental to reducing stress. Meditation and yoga or a walk are much more effective.
Yes wine can taste great, but so do fish and chips and cheesecake and I can’t eat them every week or there are consequences.

Good on you @jojo58 – that’s where I want to be.

@johnnyr – what a great idea the Pomodoro / HIT combo is.

    Day 16……Florida…..FD

I’m sorry all that I have been AWOL for the last couple days. Everything was pretty much coming to ahead and my mind has been a bit preoccupied.

Monday, date with the hubby and dinner and 50 shades with the girls was good. We shared a lovely, Greek cheese cake. Umm…. it was chocolate and cinnamon. At first, I wasn’t sure about it. But it’s was very nice. The movie was good, has some interesting turns, now I have to wait another year for the next one!
I had a very nice and wonderful Valentine’s Day, although I had to work, the evening spent with the ones I love was the best.
I completed my first full FD yesterday, I am going to attempt another today. Even though today wasn’t weigh in day, I did get on the scales and we’re moving in the right direction. It was a big relief to see after a whole week of failed attempts at a proper FD.
I haven’t had a chance to get all the posts read, I’m going to try and get that accomplished this evening after work.

    Have a great day!
    Cheerio!

@jojo I am suitably chastised. You’re right. However, I pulled a muscle in my back the other day, which keeps going into spasm. I am also struggling to lift my arm above my head without a big twinge, so dancing probably isn’t sensible until that settles. I have also put on hold my yoga/Pilates and swimming for the same reason but am still walking.
@strawberriesandcream thank you for that. I’ve googled that and there is a class about 1.5 miles from my house, so I’ll give that a go. OH might even come too! It looks fun!
@flourbaby and JohnnyR thank you for the chuckles! I didn’t know about measuring above your belly button. I usually measure just on my belly button. I shall go away and try. Maybe my waist will be 2″ smaller!

    @monkeydo

The 2/5 fasting was to try and jump off the plateau in Feb, and it is working so far, just not quite as much as I hoped so far, but sometimes the scales move in mysterious ways. It’s the longer term loss that counts, so I’m just sticking to weighing myself once a week on the same day to try and get a consistent measurement. According to the scales my Body fat % has started to drop a bit, and Skeletal muscle is up a bit – so slow progress. The best bit is really just feeling lighter and that progress is possible. I no longer think that being overweight is just something you resign yourself to when over 40 or 50.

I cannot give up alcohol. I don’t have very much now (sob). Quality not quantity for me. Fasting 5 days/week has stopped the odd glass of vino or beer too. Apart from Weds which is a quick pint with football friends; even that used to be 2 pints.

    @debster251

    Measurement Tips: πŸ™‚

    1. Breath-in, then out fully
    2. Tense abs as much as you can
    3. Pull tape as hard as you can (until you cut the circulation off is about right)

If that doesn’t work, try cling-film for a few hours in advance…

Day 16– Colorado USA — NFD

My goodness! Back to work = no time to read posts. πŸ™ Sadness. Miss catching up on everyone’s news. This weekend, I’ll return to top of page 28 & read every single post! (Looking forward to it!)

My first day back at work was BUSY!! Feels like good job security working in surgery.
It was supposed to be a FD for me, however management threw a “Margo’s back!!” pizza lunch party for the center. Even bought me a gluten-free pizza. So very, very nice. Of course I joined in.

So FD will be on Friday. It’s another 12 hour work day & there’s no food or drink allowed in the OR (which is fine, because you’d just need to go pee & no chance of that. Unfortunately, we do get rather dehydrated on work days.)

Day 16– Toronto, Canada β€” NFD

Sorry I’ve been awol for the last couple of days but back on-line again. I was hoping for a FD today but forgot about a colleagues retirement dinner tonight….Chinese buffet! I never do well at buffets. I always go with good intentions, planning to stick to more vegetable and grilled food items, trying to stay away from the battered dishes. However it’s those bite-size desserts that always get me in the end…damn that sweet tooth!

I’d love to hear some of your go-to’s when it comes to quenching that sweet-tooth craving. I do love berries and fruits, however I know I shouldn’t be having too much of those either.

    Good morning everyone πŸ™‚

    Day 16 Portugal NFD
62.6kg (happy to be in the 62s but don’t want to be here for long! Haven’t been this weight since 2012).

So I kinda managed 3 FDs, the first at under 500 cal, the second nearly 800 and the third about 800. Turned out to be not the best week in terms of social events but I tried my best. The reading on the scale is lower but not a huge drop.

I agree with I think it was @jojo who said ADF is probably better in terms of metabolism etc. I lost more when I was spreading out the FDs. Next week I am going back to fasting Monday, wednesday and Friday or Saturday.

    Day16 / U.K. / NFD again.

    Day 16 – London – FD

Day 16 USA (Illinois) – FD

I’ve got to get rid of 2 stubborn pounds that just seem to be impossible to re-lose. Hovering between 161 and 162 since I enjoyed all that movie theater popcorn (butter and flavored cheesy salts). Tomorrow evening going with friends to a new pizza place in town so cannot fast then. Will have to watch what I eat the rest of that day!

Very sad news last evening that the sudden death of a dear friend’s daughter was due to a heart defect- arrhythmia brought on by the diet drug phentermine. She was only 32, a young mother, making the best of her difficult life. They just got the autopsy results. Her death was right before Christmas.

All the more reason for us to stay on natural weight loss.

Day 16, USA, Missouri Ozarks, NFD

Hello all, feel a little “puffy” this morning – hands are even a bit swollen. Made homemade calzones last night and
    A. They weren’t really that good
    B. I ate too many of them anyway (they were minis, but still)
    C. I learned that the less I eat, the better I feel although I did sleep perfectly well from the carb overload.

    Today’s weight 147, Starting weight 152, Goal Weight 145.

Off for a day with my volunteer committee group. We will eat out somewhere so I will definitely not be fasting. Will be eating out with friends again tomorrow.

    To your health, all.

New words I learned this morning: Gilet (to us in America it is a down vest) thanks @johnnyr but sorry you’re that cold. Oh, and thanks for the tips on how to measure! πŸ™‚

    Pomodoro – interesting concept

SongBirdMe, how very sad for that family. My condolences. May she rest in peace.

    Day 16|FD|Toronto
Mid-month is past and my “results” reflect giving into personal caloric sabotage and ongoing winter sloth!

    Day 16 – USA – NFD

    Day 16. NFD. Az USA

    Day 16 NFD Oman
    16:8 today.

    DAY 16, NFD,Canada

Day 16, NFD, Rocky Mountains, US

    Day 16, FD, USA
i had my first failed FD yesterday and am trying hard not to beat myself up; I was doing so well. Alas, I am logging in here, which holds me accountable and admitting my major foul-up; I actually made it all day cruising along with my coffees and waters and then tricked myself into thinking I’d have a few tortilla chips and salsa — to fit into the 500 calorie day — then it lead to more and more going back to the bag, then all hell broke loose; something tells me a few of you are shaking your heads in “did that done that” fashion. So, now I’ve confessed and by the Grace of God I move on. Trying again today and so far so good. Take away lesson: I have to plan the evening meal AHEAD OF TIME on the FD, rather then think I can slip in a piece of fruit here, a few crackers or crispbread or a few nuts there willy nilly. Maybe when I’m stronger and cruising more along, but not now! No one said life would be easy, right?!

    Day 16 Maine FD

Good morning all! Another snow storm last night – beautiful, but birch trees totally bent over – hoping we don’t lose them. Ice storm a few years back resulted in our lovely “weeping birch” in the front yard. From the looks, it may have weeped itself to death – hope not.

Kitchen closed @ 7:00 pm last night – had a few cravings, but told myself to tough it out – kitchen is closed. Only allowed myself water because tea bags were in pantry & that was “closed”. Might move tea bags to counter for tonight – but “kitchen closed” concept worked. Mind over matter!

@songbirdme – saddest news – so sorry….and to think it’s attributed to a drug she thought would ultimately help her. I can’t imagine what that family is going through.

I think proper nutrition should be part of our education starting in pre-school. I fully supported Michelle Obama’s initiative in teaching children the importance of nutrition & exercise.

Also, for the record, I think money management should also be part of a school’s curriculum.

@monkeydo – thank you so much for that link to hello Sunday Morning! Major stress this month is learning that daughter-in-law’s drinking is beyond social & affecting the children. Sent link to son….so hoping it helps.

Again, thank you all – so grateful for the support, insight, knowledge gained & chuckles. Out for another round of shoveling. Make it a great day everybody & keep an attitude of gratitude!

    Day 16 / Sweden / FD

5:2 going well but I’m so busy grading assessments that I can’t keep up with reading the posts here. I’ll just check in for now.

    Cheerio!

    Day 16 – FD – Canada

A significant blanket of snow here with the prospect of it all melting on Saturday when we are predicted to go up to +10 C! Not enough chances this winter to do our fave family exercise – cross country (or Nordic) skiing πŸ™
FD going well. Had a snack platter with salsa, veggie sticks and hard boiled egg as lunch. Will have my Asian broth/veggie/chicken soup for dinner to warm me up.
My current sweet satisfaction is dried unsulphered apricots – lots of iron and fibre, chewy, not many cals at 16 cals each. I have 1 or 2 and am happy.

    Day 16 -Staffordshire UK-FD

    DAY 16 – Cardiff UK – NFD

    Starting weight : 173.3lb

    Today’s weight : 165.9lb (7.4lb)

Lovely NFD today, eaten well within TDEE and still not missing the sugar.

I think I may have sugar on 28th as that’s Shrove Tuesday and I’ll be making pancakes for the family and will want a couple, so going to plan ahead and allow myself them. Planning then to continue without the sugar for lent which I can hold out will be nearly 10 weeks without sugar (except the pancakes!), and really hoping I can then make it a permanent way of life.

The scales today show that in the only I have been following FD I have lost 13.9lb, which obviously I’m going to round to 1 stone. I’m absolutely delighted, though I still have 25lb to lose to get me to a healthy BMI. Still have to lose 3.5″ on my waist to get to the 50% height:waist ratio, so some way still to go there unless I get a growth spurt. At 51 I think this is a little unlikely, so hopefully FD will continue to come up with the goods.

I can’t believe how luck I was to find such a supportive forum. Thank you all for your kind wishes for hubby and for providing the laughs and thoughtful moments.

Last FD of the week tomorrow, and still feeling positive that I can do this. I know a number of people are struggling and wish you all the strength and encouragement you need.

It really is a case of together we are stronger. Take care.

    Day 16 : Cheshire, UK : FD

I’m really trying to make this a liquid fast day. @loubelles – thank you for mentioning me and others who are fasting today. It has really given me strength, although I am struggling a little. I know I can do this, I’ve done it before. The incentive is that I’m so bloated and the cellulite has appeared with a vengeance. One of the benefits of eating strictly low carb is my cellulite shrinks and almost disappears.

Once I’m back on the wagon, I really need to stay on until I feel secure in my new eating ways.

Anyway, just a few more hours and hopefully I can fast again tomorrow although a friend is cooking me a belated birthday meal. It will be vegetarian but I have a feeling she will have dessert too. Sigh! I CAN DO THIS AND NOT FALL OFF THE WAGON! πŸ™‚

Cheerio for now! I will keep checking in until I go to bed. I CAN DO THIS! πŸ™‚

    Day 16 – NSW Aust – NFD
    Day 17 – FD

Come on @goldensun, not long to go now. I do liquid fasts and at this time of the day I start thinking about how many hours I’ve lasted – probably over 12, and only a couple before bed. You’ve managed this far so you know you can do it.

    Take care

@pashaw – Thank you…..not long now πŸ™‚ Yeah, only a couple of hours before bed and to be honest I’m not hungry.

    Day 16 – Montreal – FD

I started my FD 14 hrs ago so will work my night shift and eat around 4 am (if hungry), otherwise at 2pm tomorrow when I wake. My danger zone is approaching (5 days off!) so have planned the meals ahead of time to try and control the damage.
    I will weigh myself tomorrow.
Good luck and strength to all, I’m so new to this that I don’t have any advice to give but definitely see how easy to is to falter when our emotions waver.
@scs my ex s-i-l was an alcoholic and managed to hide it from her parents (and my brother) for over 20 years. I hope she is ready to get help.

    FD DAY 17 AUS

Day 16 – SW WA USA – FD

SongBirdMe – so sorry for your friend. Thanks for sharing. You’re right that we can learn from these tough situations. Keeping things natural is important.

Just catching up today, I noticed again that the different ways people feel at various times are how someone else has also felt or gone through – like messing up the 1st FD. It is wonderful to be on this journey together. The only way we can go wrong, is to quit.

    Day16 UK NFD

Ended Fast yesterday with popcorn and sweets, little miss self sabotage that I am. Back to being good today even though it’s a NFD had chocolate but only a little.

Busy checking you all in but of a catch up as I have been also a busy bee at work, once spreadsheet updated will try and post, never done before so bear with me – not the grizzly bear kind. 🐻

Good luck all hope you are feeling optimistic on the homeward stretch now the other sid elf half way keep it up let February matter there’s still time! Xxx

    Cheerio x

    Day 16 USA NFD

    Day 16 | NFD | Bucks UK

    Day 16 – NFD – Toronto

Feeling a little blue, was super optimistic of dropping a pound today after my two good FDs this week and dropped all of 0.25 pounds, womp womp… reading some of the above posts about alcohol I wonder if it’s because I had a margarita on my Tuesday NFD this week (I fast on M and W) or because I just ended my period? Going to weight in again tomorrow morning after this NFD to check it out. I thought of doing another FD today but then decided against it since I don’t want to throw my metabolism out of whack and have otherwise been losing weight with 2 FDs a week… however, being so blue, I am not eating as much and doubt I’ll even hit by BMR today (as of right now looks like intake will be about 1100 calories)… onwards and downwards.

    Georgia/USA/Day16/FD

    Day 16 – Switzerland – NFD
It’s not going well. Squeaking in with 2 minutes to midnight.

    Hi UK day 16 fd

And….exhale ride the wave it will get better. Peaks and troughs!

I didn’t know about Ceroc! It’s amazing what you learn here. Take care everyone x

    Day 16 Ireland NFD

Day 14 FD country west Australia
    Day 15 NFD
    Day 16 NFD
    Day 17 NFD
Been offline for a few days.

Still recovering from monster headache after fasting Sunday 8pm until Tuesday 1pm. Managed mainly fluid after a below 500 calorie breakfast. Plenty of water etc but never Again!!
Been quite unwell since. After all the effort weight up 800 gms.
    C”est la vie.

Day 17 Tasmania Aus FD 63.9kgs

Yay heading down again. Third day of b2b2b, I’m looking forward to tomorrow though I always find myself not hungry when the time actually comes to eat. Though that doesn’t last long.
Not planning any b2b’s next week. Will probably do Tuesday and Thursday next week. Interesting talk about b2b’s, I think you should do what works for you and Dr Fung talks about the benefits of continued fasting with regards to ketosis. As far as I understand. Also the benefit of once you get to a certain point you stop feeling as hungry. So doing it together means you can go off the back of that. One of the benefits of non consecutive fasting is that the hours of fasting are more total than the same amount of days b2b as you have the nights counting separately instead of together. For example b2b starting after dinner Sunday 7pm until 7 am Wednesday is 60 hours and if you fast non consecutively Sunday night 7pm until Tuesday 7am it’s 36 hours and fast Wednesday night 7pm until Friday 7am that’s another 36 hours for a total of 72 hours which of course equals more time for your body to have a break and repair itself and also more time to dip your insulin levels to burn body fat.
So there are really benefits to both from what I have read and really you should do what works for you. I do what fits in well with whatever else is going on. Sometimes I love a b2b at the beginning of the week and then I feel like I am done. But I also love the way a fast resets my appetite so find benefits from spreading them out. Having read Dr Fung’s recent book about fasting it really seems like there are benefits from all different types of fasting and it’s great to try some of them out.
Good luck everyone with however you are doing it and mix it up a bit if you are on a plateau. This stuff does work and makes more sense than anything else.

    Day 17 – Tokyo, Japan – FD #12 80.8kg

My weight actually went up to 81.9kg, but I think that is mostly due to working out hard. As muscles build and recover they swell and hold more water. That is actually a good thing. I really stressed my upper body this last week so some extra weight is normal. What I’m really concerned about is my overall body fat.

@johnnyr – Where are you getting your measure an inch above the bellybutton from? My belly button is clearly my thickest point and I’ve read many places that is where the measurement should be. If I go a couple cm above my belly button the fat drops off a lot. Additionally I don’t think it makes sense to take a tight measurement. The tape should be snug but not constricting. I’ve even seen some recommendations that the tape should be held loosely. I compromise and measure snuggly over my clothes at the thickest point. That puts me at 85cm/174cm giving a waist/height ratio of 0.49. A year ago I was at 0.54 (or maybe a little more). In the past I wasn’t so careful to measure at the thickest point, so I was cheating. If I do that now I could get a measurement less than 82cm.

    Day 16…..Florida….. FD

Lou belles….. did well today, going try for another tomorrow. I put you in my pocket…. I sure do hope you find a comfy spot, I’ve never done three days in a row. So, this should be interesting!

Jojo58….. in the states, they sell nail oil for dry nails. You can pick it up in any nail salon or hair place. Maybe give that a try for dry nails….

I finally finished reading all the posts. I’ve been so slack lately, but I am getting back into gear. Finished up my second FD today and hoping to do another one tomorrow.

I hope to catch you all up tomorrow too!
    Cheerio!
