Day 15,Canada,FD
@fivetwo, I have had a similar experience with palpitations and found that a potassium tablet quickly remedied the problem. Our electrolytes can get out if wack with the diuretic effects of fasting and increased water intake.
@pasha, hope things change direction soon for your husband. That is a really tough combination to be fighting at one time. I admire your resolve to stay strong in the face of great stress!
@fatrabbit 👏👏👏👍👍well done!
Hi all UK day 15 NFD
Bloody wagon has thrown me off because of that bumpy road. That is what I get from feeling pleased with myself after the last drop to a new low. Pride before a fall etc etc! Not to worry I’ll catch up with the wagon and with page 28 and 29 of posts. Going out tonight for hopefully a lovely meal with OH – then fast day tomorrow.
Day 15, London, UK, FD
Normal FD today, prawn stir-fry for lunch and Covent Gdn soup for Dinner so I think 514 cals today. I find the CG soups a godsend!!!
@coda, way to keep the faith, I’m glad the wagon is still within view, when it disappears over the horizon, we’re in trouble!!!!
Happy FD to all, (whether that’s today or tomorrow!!!)
Day 15, FD, Rocky Mountains, US
Hi,
NFD yesterday, had chocolate, chips and salsa but still stayed within my TDEE.
@jarbia: I think this was definitely an interesting documentary and something to think about. This gaining all the weight back and more.
Today back on the wagon. Looking forward to a a good FD.
All the best to all of you!
Ciao!
Day 15 – Cumbria UK – NFD
What a change in the weather from yesterday, grey skies and overcast all day!
A few seem to be having problem sleeping on FDs – I find eating most of my calories as late as possible, usually around 1900hrs helps with a good night sleep. However when I do a water fast I do find that I don’t have a good night’s sleep – I have tried doing some yoga relaxation before bed which seems to help.
@In it to thin it – loved your canadian description of saying “not hungry” on Day 14…….Brilliant
@ciren2 – you are allowed to shout as loud as you like – WELL DONE YOU on your successful FDs this month…….I’ll be fasting on Friday too so we can support each other and I spoke too soon about the weather …….at least we had 2 beautiful days in a row
@coda – loved your write up about “perfect” so true – we should all take note of this
@and… exhale – hope your FD was successful and that those big girl pants were firmly pulled up!!!
@jarbia – that programme highlighted the need to have a WOL and not following a diet – as soon as you stop the diet the weight just comes back…..the brilliance of the 5:2 WOL is that it changes how we eat and allows us to lose weight and then to maintain that loss so long as we stay on this WOE
@pashaw – positive thoughts to you and your husband – it sounds like you have realised that you are so much stronger than you thought – hugs
@norrieb – welcome back – we are all here for you – remember together we are stronger
@happymargo – hope your first day back was good – though you may find that you are a bit tired after such your enforced break – look after yourself.
@fivetwo – I agree with @jojo58 that palpitations need to be checked out by a doctor – it is not normal! Please look after your health.
Well done to all those doing B2B or B2B2B – great stamina!! I did those only once I think – glad that I’m now maintaining on doing 2 separate FDs a week (although I still tend to do one of those as a water FD and the 2nd one as a 1/4 TDEE FD) been doing this since December and it allows me to not count calories on NFDs, although I think that most NFDs I’m either at TDEE or just above – certainly my weight has stayed just below my target but I do a check calories consumed on a NFD once every 2 weeks to make sure that I don’t stray too much……….and I weigh twice a week but only register my weight after my 2nd FD!
If you have a bad day, just remember that tomorrow is another day – Positive vibes to all
Day 15|CD|Toronto
Post Valentine’s Day resolve reset required!
Cause and effect; watched a re-run of “The Great British Baking Show” on Sunday, ended up, in Bobbette & Belle Artisanal Pastries “http://bobbetteandbelle.com/shop_cakes.html”, eating a huge slice of the most amazing and seductive Carrot Cake? Let’s blame Cupid, Carbo Lust, Winter Fatigue, and the BBC!
Day 15 : Cheshire, UK : NFD
I’ve fallen off the wagon and finding it really difficult to get back on. Ever since my birthday at the beginning of Feb, when I ate refined carbs. I’m also way behind with reading posts as I was away in London at the weekend and have been too busy to catch up.
Sigh! I’m a little annoyed at myself. I thought I was stronger than that but deep down I think I knew there was a risk as I know from past experience that refined carbs trigger cravings and the sugar addiction in me.
One positive, I’m back to meditating daily for 1hr.
Cheerio for now!
Day 15 – Canada – NFD
Have been having loads of health check-ups and tests lately and am happy that today’s mtg went well. In the moment when the Dr. was trying to smooth over awkward transitions and make small talk she said ‘you’re quite slim, do you work out?’. God bless her! She made me laugh 🙂
@curlytot I’m meeting with my GP next week to discuss anemia. I think it’s due to monthly cycle blood loss as all pertinent markers are down sort of uniformly, but I should know more soon. Yesterday I went out and got the best advertised iron supplement I could find – Megafood’s ‘Blood Builder’. I’ve supplemented in the past and found I’ve had a very hard time tolerating iron, I’ve taken Megafood multivits before and they are very gentle. Hopefully I’ll have good things to report soon. Am also supplementing with B12. And am going to overhaul my diet to add more heme and non-heme iron sources. Have to cut down on caffeine, which limits iron absorption.
I’ve been doing well with FDs, I’ve even been adding HIT exercise. But I have been low energy and getting paler (already pale) and have been noticing that I feel out of breath – which is not normal for me. So, intuitively I’ve known something was up. How are you managing pernicious anemia?
As far as 5:2 – I’ve hit another plataeau post- Valentine’s eating. Am up nearly a lb and not shaking it, hope to blast through on Thursday FD and get back to losing.
Love the blog, stories, videos (Butter Bob is Brilliant)…
Day 16 NFD MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA
Dr Jason Fung’s response to the Biggest Loser Article –
https://intensivedietarymanagement.com/biggest-loser-diet-explained/
Following a 5:2 or other IF WOL and not turning them into another crash diet appear to be the answer to sustainable weight loss. For me the most important feature of following a fasting/eating pattern is not feeling deprived and never feeling guilty about enjoying food. Sure I’ve made changes but they are sustainable just don’t let me near a bag of chips/crisps … They are banished forever!
Hugs to everyone feeling stress, coping with illness or struggling.
I agree
Jason Fung is the man
Insulin Resistance in the real nut that affects weight loss.
The answer is to stop eating sugar, carbs have hidden sugars, sad but true.
We need to stop our bodies storing fat by not eating sugars.
He has changed people’s thinking. Sadly Slimming World and Weight Watchers choose to ignore the evidence and continue to encourage their slimmers to eat sweet and sacarine added foods. Feeding the addicts ensuring they have customers in the future. Money making businesses, no different to fizzy drinks manufacturers.
I myself was a bread addict, I now see it for what it is, hidden sugar. Not for me now.
Day 16 FD
Normal Thursday fast day today. I have been struggling with the Thursday fasts recently so am determined to give it my best shot. Busy day in the office with nothing but tea and water until this evening when I have a bowl of lentil and mushroom bolognaise.
Happy fasting Thursday fasters. Have a good mindful eating day everyone else.
Day 16 Sunshine Coast Qld Australia FD: 106.3 kgs. I think I am going to be fantastic at maintenance when I get to goal as I am maintaining this high weight over a period of months now. Lots of 16:8 with odd FD thrown in. I will succeed in this FD today. I cooked extra beef bone broth yesterday and it will be all fluids. I indulged in bubbles and 2 hot cross buns yesterday. Couldn’t take watching my daughter eat them any longer. Lashings of butter. So the weight is back into the 106s again.
It’s lovely to see you get back into the swing of things, Ciren2. Well done. And well done to the other fasters who are succeeding.
Thanks for that link, Songbird. What a talented group of trombonists and their guitarist, pianist and drummer certainly add to the balance in those pieces. My 10 year old grandson is learning to play the trombone, so I got him to listen to it this morning.
My day is starting off well. Flute lesson at 10 am. OH at the dentist. Broth will be the order of the day.
2nd post
I still eat carbs, but never for breakfast and always unrefined (@ fuvvie hot cross buns with lashings of butter – yum. I’ll be making an exeption to my rule. Definitely will indulge and with this WOL I can afford too. )
Eating carbs at breakfast makes me hungry – that dreaded insulin spike. Eating them at dinner and lunch doesn’t have the same effect. Perhaps because they are combined with good fats, loads of colourful veg and a small serving of protein.
I do miss my breakfast porridge though and occassionaly indulge. As my mother-in-law always said, ” a little bit of what you fancy, does you good.”
2nd Post : FINALLY caught up on all posts….taken me all evening 🙂
I’m feeling really bloated so I’m intending to fast tomorrow. @coda – can I hold your hand? 🙂
Cheerio xx
Day 15 Ireland FD.
Hadn’t planned a FD today but unfortunately a splurge yesterday has set the scales right back to square one. Still, I refuse to give up because I know I feel so much better on 5:2. My tummy isn’t bloated anymore, so I know some good is happening. Just gotta be patient. Thanks to everyone on the thread..strength in numbers!
Day 16, Dunsborough West Aust, NFD
Does anyone know what a good waist to height ratio is? Mine is 0.54 with a BMI of 25.4. My ultimate goal is to get my BMI to around 22 or 23 and to do this I need to ditch another 12kg.
Also, I know a healthy waist measurement for women is 80cm, but what are the healthy measures for the rest of the body?
Happy fasting everyone 😍
Day 15 Maine NFD
Howdy all – late checking in today. i managed a beach walk yesterday & today – so happy. Even managed some HIT – when a wave threatened to soak me! So happy there wasn’t anyone videoing that – but I won the race! Came home to rake the snow off the dining room “bumpout” roof that’s prone to ice dams. Was doing great ’til I fell backwards “plop” in a snow bank – was up to my hips in snow! So happy I’ve taken the 7 lbs off – was not easy to get this lard ass up! Had to roll over & inch my way to house to grab for traction….all while laughing hysterically! I was absolutely covered in snow! Again, so happy no one was videoing!! Just my reenactment for hubby & son had them in hysterics! Brushed myself off & walked up to unearth neighbor’s car. Let me tell you every muscle in my body was voicing disapproval this morning!
Had a few Valentine’s chocolates last night, so being very careful today. Trying to keep to BMR. Tomorrow FD & another snow storm!! FD are easier for me when I’m out & about.
Oh, I finally made Beef bone broth – delicious – like a rich beefy onion soup stock. Thinks I’ll heat some up right now as a pre-dinner treat.
Hang in there everybody!
@pasha – hope your husband is doing better – shingles are the pits & you just feel so helpless…sounds like you’ve really had some challenges. May it get better for you.
@songbird – thanks for the music link – lovely!
Day 15 – FD – Toronto
What a mental day at work! The good news is I was so stressed out that I had zero time to even think about food. Other than my green tea this morning I didn’t eat until 3:30 p.m. (!) which I know may not be a big deal for the 0 calorie FD folks but it is for me! It may work in my favour considering I ate to my heart’s contents for Valentine’s Day dinner (ceviche, guac, tacos and half a churro dessert! myam! myam!) Heading home now and will eat dinner if/when I get hungry.
Thinking of you @pasha and everyone else struggling with stressful factors in their personal lives – your determination inspires me!
@mimigogirl – I just read up recently on the various ratios. I jotted down a good height/weight ratio in in the 46-49 range (using inches that is).
I am not sure about waist overall, however, a good ratio, maybe the best ratio to measure is Waist to Hip. Again in inches, you would want to be below 80 percent. Waist being midway between the bottom of your lowest rib and half way up from the top of your hip bone (vs thinnest area or belly button).
Have you looked into what your ideal weight should be by calculating your Lean Body Mass first and using your ideal Body Fat percent as a reference? I am focused on this last measurement at the moment and have calculated that for me to have a Body Fat % of 21-22 I would need to weigh around 132-134 for example.
Day 16 Tasmania Aus FD 64.7kgs
FD went really well yesterday, am doing another today and tomorrow, make it a b2b2b. @bert1802 looks like you’re doing the same as me, it’s nice to have a friend on this as couldn’t do the earlier one.
Also looks like @coda, @blueninjamum, @fuvvie, @goldensun and @scs are fasting today as well. Don’t know if I missed any and some may not have decided yet, but nice to have company. Good luck all.
Day 16 UK NFD -1/2 lb so 6 lbs down this month- very pleased, I may even double my goal from 4 to 8 lbs for February. I have averaged 7 lb per month before on strict 5:2 but I had to calorie count non fast days then.
So 3 day (300 cal )restricted calorie was not more effective than my usual routine, probably because I have been fasting long term. I think if you are going to try to speed up ADF is more effective(voice of experience speaking) your body needs the feast and famine ratio to maintain its metabolic rate. Just Saying- no point depriving you body of calories daily when it doesn’t work as well as ADF. I will be sticking with 4:3 and 23/1 daily. 4 days 1500 calories, 3 days 500 calories(all guessed- no counting). I don’t really need to count as I know calorie contents and keep portion control tight. Most importantly I don’t eat ANY sugar.
Now then ‘ How to reduce your waistline’ mine is 10 inches smaller so I know what works.
Speed walking using arms or using Nordic Poles (10,000 steps per day)
Skipping- start with one minute and increase daily by one minute until you can do 30 minutes.
Yoga twists
Dancing classes, especially the jive and Latin.
Stop eating Carbs
Using a Hula Hoop
Using a trampoline or trampet
Give up sugar
Anyone else know a good waist reducer?
Buy a weaved belt, avoid leather as difficult to add new holes. Have fun, start by measuring at belly button level even if not the smallest, it will be a consistent marker.
Good Luck and Well done Pocketeers and non Pocketeers.
Just did some research on exercises to reduce waistline, interesting!
Claim you can lose 8 inches in 6 weeks( highly doubtful) possibly if they are counting loss from different regions of hips and waist e.g 2 inches off waist, 2 off hips etc.
Still it got me thinking that a measurement reduction focus might be good for pocketeers research group? Each member could all do a different exercise for 15 mins per day and compare results after one month. I am up for it in March, anyone else? It would have to be an exercise not currently in your routine and an addition to current exercise. This could be fun!
DAY 16 – UK – NFD
Dear oh dear – disastrous day yesterday – and I was so optimistic! Fine until home from my day out in Oxford – had a lovely hot filling healthy soup at Pret’s at lunchtime(It was cold and very wet in Oxford) …. so decided not to eat supper as hubby had been out to lunch with a friend …..well the friend I went with just wouldn’t leave once we got home, …after a coffee, she sat and sat, and I offered her a drink, ooh yes please she said, so I got out the red wine, she and hubby guzzled down two glasses each -I also put out Kettle crisps and nuts!!! As she was to be driving home, and was still bunkering down in front of the fire, suggested I get her something to eat?? OOh yes please! – so ended up digging a M and S quiche out of the freezer (for such emergencies), jacket potatoes with cheese, and salad, then goats cheese and bikkies for afters – as I had nothing else. Of course, I ate as well….. So have put on a lb. from yesterday, and am going out for a lunch to-day, and have the grand children for a couple of days until Sunday – that is always disastrous as I get so tired, I nibble!! My holier than thou attitude in January, when I did so well is crumbling, doubt whether I will make Feb. target, but now am just happy if I stay the same weight at the end of the month, as I was at end Jan!!!! Oh well! March is another day!!! Sorry! had to get that off my chest …..Good luck all xx
Day 16 BELFAST NFD
I woke up starving this morning after a successful NFD yesterday and was disappointed to read +3 lbs on the dreaded scales. I’m not going to let it fizz on me. The next 4 days I shall do 16:8 and keep the booze to a minimum! I’m interested in the direction this thread is going. I’m home on Monday, and back on the wagon!
@Mimiogirl, my BMI is 25.4 and waist to height is 0.54 too, which at 5’6″ puts me just in the overweight band. However, I am definitely an apple shape and now the rest of my body is quite slim, but my waist is still 35.5″. I too would like to reduce my BMI bu my key goal now is my waist measurement. I can now get into some size 12 clothes but won’t go out and replace the wardrobe just yet.
@jojo – sounds good. I like your list. I have already cut most sugar from my diet and am working on refined carbs, but my motto is ‘everything in moderation’ and don’t anticipate cutting carbs altogether. I’m up for your focus and when my back improves I’m up for giving the exercise a go. I’m hoping to find a dance class soon, but we have a few trips away which inhibits me signing up for a block class. Something will turn up.
Thank you for all the music links. I love music. Good for the soul.
Congratulations to the many big losses. I hope I get there soon!
For those with difficulties, whatever they may be, my thoughts are with you – stay strong.
Have a good day everyone.
Day 16 FD UK
Sorry I have missed a couple of days, loads of medical appointments this week. Have caught up with the posts now, just still need to watch Butter bob which I will keep as a treat for later 😀
My lovely husband bought me a veggie ready meal from M&S which was just 255 calories and it was so delicious and such a treat I have bought another for this FD to have with lots of veggies.
Got a busy day lined up which is a good distraction from food, must remember to keep drinking or I get an awful headache.
I feel your pain @jarbia I have a friend who positively sabotages my efforts when we are together and I never make arrangements to meet on a FD.
@dykask I am impressed by your resolve and love that you are 13 kg lighter than last year, there is hope for me yet!
I am going to give some of your waist wittler suggestions a go @jojo58 10 inches off your waist is truly amazing.
Have a great day everyone
Day 16 UK FD
I nearly sabotaged myself after that wonderful reading on the scales yesterday by failing to resist the bag of kettle vegetable chips that somehow crept onto my shopping order (they were on offer, what can I say!). Needless to say I polished off the whole bag. BUT even with those I was still under TDEE so no harm done. I was afraid that would just be the start of a binge but I didn’t even have another bowl of chili which I would have done if I hadn’t eaten them. My hunger hormones really seem to be working properly now which is novel!
@Mimiogogirl Apparently a waist to height ratio of under 0.5 is a better health indicator than BMI. I am a shape that makes that easier to achieve than it is for some people. I can already suck myself in to reach it with a BMI of over 30, but have 3 inches to go before I am actually there. I think it is the way it captures the fat distribution in this way that makes it better. I am carrying my excess just under the skin rather than internally so it is less a threat to my health but still awfully uncomfortable and energy sapping and it has to go.
@scs I really envy that snow up in Maine. I do love a good snowfall and we haven’t had one for several years. The animals love playing in it too and it is so much fun to watch them enjoy it. But when it happens everything here grinds to a halt and getting feed delivered becomes a problem and volunteers can’t get here to help so it is just as well it is there not here.
Debster251,
You can get lots of Dance DVD’s on Amazon, don’t put off until tomorrow, it is not the dieters friend.
Actually- everything in moderation- is not a motto I agree with anymore. Most of us find that ‘a little bit’ leads to ‘alot’.
I am hourglass shaped so often look slimmer than I am, except in a swimsuit. But I am very happy to loose more waist inches. There are several exercises that are back friendly. I will be doing those myself as I often have a sore back from bowls. Swimming and walking help.
Day 16, Newcastle UK, NFD
Excellent Nfd yesterday. Porridge, full fat Greek yogurt and raspberries for breakfast, whole avocado and nuts for lunch, normal portion corn beef hash and carrots for dinner followed by a satsuma, small apple, nuts and 29g gruyere. 4 tea and coffees and lots of water. I tracked calories and was happily amazed to see I was still below my TDEE at 1563 cals. This showed me that eating proper, unmessed with, food can satisfy my appetite and tastebuds and still lead to small and consistent weight loss between fast days. More importantly I am eating lots of foods that I love but was always told to avoid. This is how the 5:2 WOL is sustainable. Two and a half hours of Ceroc finished a very good day.
I’m sending positive thoughts to those struggling right now. We’re all going to have ‘poorer eating days’ but we can draw a line, not beat ourselves up and focus instead on how many good days we’ve had.
Debster251 – Google Ceroc to see if you have a local class. No block fees, you pay as you go and never miss any learning as the steps/routines are repeated on a 8 week cycle. I dragged my OH along and he is as hooked as me. It works just as well for singles and couples as we rotate partners in the class and dance with lots of people in freestyle after the class.
Day 16, London, UK, NFD
Sipping a mocha and eyeing the malted milk biscuits some buffoon left in the office!!!! I can actually feel the weight entering my body via my eyeballs………. Medusa indeed!! That girl’s got NOTHING on a malted milk biscuit!!!!!!
Daily weigh-ins show a 3day plateau which is normal for me, even after a FD yesterday, I’m usually down the 2nd morning after a FD. I’m 1lb above my Feb target, but I’m celebrating my B’day next Fri……………………… and as mindful as I HOPE I’ll be……………… It’s really going to be a ‘no holds barred’ type of day!!! So my target weight might just (scratch that…,)‘WILL’ be possible – think positive, right??
Keep strong all those struggling, if life was easy, I’d be thin!!! I stress, I struggle, I despair = I eat!! At least this WOL gives us a way of getting back on the horse (@coda & @golden Sun – ‘wagon’ in your cases), sometimes it’s ungainly, inelegant or downright ugly, but at least we get back on, we have the means to succeed, we just need to make THAT the habit, rather than the self-sabotaging hand-to-mouth action at which we are Olympians!!!!!
@jojo58 – I wish I could join you in saying ‘I myself was a bread addict’ – not quite there yet, hence my name, one day soon though!!
Have a beautiful day everyone, resistance IS NOT futile!!!!!!
However……….
@-Rachel- a chocolate fountain at work would be the end of life as I know it, I’d probably stick my head under it!!! My office is the dumping ground for bad stuff nobody would dare to keep in their house, I’m guilty of buying a 6-pack of cupcakes then dumping 5 in the office to avoid having one per day until they were gone!……….. ‘Waste not, want not’ mentality is a killer!!!
Congrats @fatrabbit – ‘Nearly’ being the operative word, hold tight to that hunger controlling rudder!!
Day 16 UK , FD
All went well on the 3 day pocket fast. I ate 600kcal on Mon, 450kcal on Tues and 720kcal on Weds. Also exercised yesterday and a bit on Tues. Was considering not doing a FD today, but trying to stick to 5 in a row, eating normally from Friday evening – mustn’t beat myself up if I cave in as I’m ‘Hank Marvin’ and the image of Colonel Sanders is floating around my head. Day 3 always seems the hardest, mainly due to loss of body temp, but I take that as a sign my bod is switching to fat burn mode + I’m trying to use HIT as the answer to get the fat burn going if only to generate some body heat! Working indoors with a hat, scarf and down Gilet on is ridiculous! Always thought I was a naturally warm person (physically speaking of course, I have no compassion/empathy whatsoever 🙂 ) now I realise I was just warm cos I was too fat!
My main problem (I’ve decided) is that I am sitting down too much when work is busy, so trying to sort a Pomodoro / HIT combination (25 mins work + 5 mins HIT x 4, followed by 25 mins + 12 mins HIT). I have my rowing machine and weights nearby. I’ve just purchased fast exercise by Dr M, so I’ll have a read this weekend and write myself a routine for next week. I might even write a book myself!? Or create a Work / Exercise App?
Anyway, enough of my nonsense. I’m sure you all have better things to do fasters.
Well done to all, even those who think they are struggling need to remember how far they’ve come and not beat themselves up about it. Give yourself a break now and again.
As Confucious say: Man who go to bed with coat-hanger in mouth, wake up with big smile on face. 🙂
@Mimiogogirl
As a health predictor Waist / Height is arguably more important that weight loss, although the two go hand in hand.
I’m at 0.54 (I think) which is on the borderline between ‘OK’ and ‘Take action’ (which is 5:2 and exercise for me). But women are probably a bit lower. If you look at the charts available online you get a sense of where you are on the grand scale of things.
The misleading bit is that you need to measure yourself 1 inch above the belly button, rather than your waist; i.e. in the space below your ribs and before your belly button. I assume it’s because that’s where your liver and other major organs are and where visceral fat lingers ready to kill us all in a Foie Gras death knell style 🙂 .
