  • I’ve been on 5:2 for 25 weeks and lost 25 lbs. As I am going on holidays for 2 weeks thought I’d try 4:3 for 2 weeks. The first week I stayed the same and the second week I put on a kilo? Can someone explain this. I wait and do the two 12-14 hour fasts overnight and exercise every day. I never go over the 500 calories!I’ve also been watching my nonfast days! Any ideas?????

maybe you have build muscle due to the exercise, do you feel bigger or do your clothes feel any looser, ive no idea why these things happen but i do understand how frustrating it can be, 25lb in 27 weeks is still a huge loss and a great achivement, and remember all the health benifits to boot, when you compare it to my 39lbs in 51 weeks its not bad at all, i am still doing the plan because i belive it is still working, i may not see results every week but know i will still lose weight in the long term and this time i know i can keep it off. wishing you all the best, dont lose heart xx

Thanks fast for life I appreciate your encouragement. You’re right it’s just a bump in the road, frustrating one though.

something i did think of after i went offline last night, youve just dropped some of your medication, who knows how fasting will be affected by thrse sorts of changes, when i have times of frustration and believe me i do, my partner reminds me of how complex the human body is and many changes that we cant see could be going on on the inside xx

Today I recorded a 3.3lb loss for the week making up for the 1.5lb I gained last week and more. Explain that….

Fantasic Beavergong, i hope thats been enough of a loss to keep you motivated, as far as explaining why… not got a clue, just very happy for you that its a positive result xx

Never mind the lbs….how much have you shrunk?

Can you believe I did it again? Put on 1.4lbs last week and then lost 3.3 lbs this week. Now lost 34 lbs in 34 weeks on the diet, I’d like to lose 40 lbs!

You are doing really great, 6 lbs to your goal

We did the 4.3 one week it didn’t help us at all, we do better on the 5.2 maybe the balance of food is better. For us.

For the weight gain, what have you eaten, a extra slice bread? A few more potatoes? than usual, need the toilet? Husband jumps straight on the scales from getting up, I always go to the toilet first! Every ounce counts!

Hi Beavergong, very nice to see your still going strong, my weight can fluctuate by about 4 lbs from day to day, depending if its a feed or fast day, i do think what we eat and drink can take a few days to be processed, so we can hang on to the unprocessed lbs and our fat loss can be hidden, i wouldnt think the 1.4lb gain was a *true* fat gain but your body hadnt yet caught up, your so close to your goal it may take a little longer for those last few lbs to show, keep us posted your so close, ive another 21 lbs or so to loose before im in the healthy weight range, im sure you will hit your goal before i do, and in much less time. xx

Hi Beavergong, I think we communicated once before? My loss almost exactly mirrors yours, 17.5kg (38.5lbs) in 39 weeks. Also Australian female, 63 from Hobart (most would say also a small village).
I lost fast at the beginning, 9kg in 12 weeks, but now averaged out to half kilo a week, which I suppose is the sustainable way to go.
But I have also found that after a fast day I don’t lose weight. I fast from after dinner Sunday and Tuesday until lunch Tuesdays and Thursdays (water only), and crosstrainer at gym 6 mornings a week. But if I weigh Tuesday morning after fasting always no loss or put on a few hundred grams. When I weigh on the Wednesday I have lost (weird).
Aiming for 66kg (another 7.3kg). And boy, will that be a 40 year record!

By sleeping well at night and afternoon as soon as a great meals. And take diary products daily, cook mutton and beafs cholestrol or make a soup and have it.

Hi Beavergong (if you are still on this thread)

Just want to say I ALMOST made my goal of 70kg by Christmas! Not quite, but have now lost the magical 20.1kg (3 stone 2 lbs) since 22/1/13 (exactly 11 months). Now 70.7kg from 90.8 in January!!!!!!!!!
Had blood tests last week and
Cholesterol from 7.2 (January), 5.9 (April), 5.4 (last week)
Tryglicerides from 3.2 (January), 0.8 (April), 0.6 (last week)
BMI from 34.8 to 30.1 to 26.61 today.

I feel great and will fast forever, and I am determined not to put on ANY weight over Christmas – last week bought a 16C, unbelievable feeling! Onward to 66kg.
    Merry Christmas!

Congratulations Vicki. The weight loss has started again and I’ve now lost 16.5 kg since Feb 20 2013 and I’m still aiming for 18-20kg loss by Feb 20 2014 or soon after.
Would you believe it I’ve just come back from Hobart. My husband took me to Coles Bay to walk to Wine glass bay for my birthday and having grown up in Tassie we had to have a few nights in Hobart. We could have met up and celebrated your 20 kg loss and my working towards it!
    Enjoy.

Hey Beaver! Good to hear your weightloss started up again ^^ Anything specific you did? Or just waited?

I just kept fasting twice a week. For me it’s taken me 10 months but I’ve finally managed just to eat breakfast and dinner and not have soup or salad at lunch time….This was the only thing that changed and yes I waited 4 weeks after my change of my thyroxine dose like you all said!!!

    Hi Beavergong,
I wondered how you were and how the 5:2as going.A fantastic 16.5Kg is amazing. Well done!

    Annette52
I,m doing fine losing slowly but still losing 36 lbs down now and people are really starting to notice even though the weight
Loss now is slower than it was. I’ve had to adjust my thyroxine I am taking down twice as my levels became too high and this slowed my weight loss for about a month each time but I persevered and I was aiming for 40 lb lost but my doctor suggested recently 44 would be better?? We’ll see. My husband has already achieved his goal and now just fasts 1 day a week and is maintaining well. He only had 20 lb to lose!

    Hi!
I am delighted to hear from you.An amazing 36lbs!!!!!!!!
I am sure that people are noticing that weight loss. Why not get to 40 lbs and see how you feel?It may be that 44 lb is better.
Losing weight slowly is the key too. This is a marathon and not a sprint.

You have done so well and so has your husband.

    Great weight loss Beaverbong!
I was amazed at Christmas – we had a 6kg Turkey (about 14lbs) and I could hardly lift it into the oven! Yet I have lost so much more than that – how did I move at all!

    Lindy,
That’s an excellent way of seeing the pounds coming off . Thanks !

Hi Beavergong, its lovely to hear how well youve done, 36 lbs is amazing! keep us posted in the new year, xx

Reading these success stories makes me very envious. Could be a year
or more long journey for me.

Jojo I look at 5:2 as my lifestyle now. I am sure it is something I will continue, when I reach the weight I want to be I will go 6:1, for the health benefits. I don’t want Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, Dementia or a stroke thank you! I love the weight loss but this is my real motivation 🙂

Well I got to my year on 5:2 last week and I’d lost my 18.1kg. Then I did 2 fast this week and weighed today and I’ve but on .7kg.
Hmmmm it must be the celebration of reaching my goal on my nonfast days. So I’m right back on it and I’ve got up and then down before but it is DISAPPOINTING!!!

Beavergong!!!!!!!I have been wondering how you were getting on.

Well done on the 18.1kg….never mind about the .7kg, it will soon go.

I know how disappointing it can be.I am still working on the Christmas bulge!

    OMG!!!!! How did that happen??
I stepped on the scales yesterday morning at the end of my 7th week of 5:2 for them to tell me I had PUT ON 3lbs – eek! That is more than I put on over the whole 2 week Christmas and New Year holidays!!
Up until now I have had a nice steady weekly loss and was 10 lbs lighter at last Thursdays weigh in than when I started. In the past week I have done absolutely nothing different – neither my eating nor my exercise habits have changed in the slightest and I continue to log everything I eat on MyFitnessPal. I just can’t understand this. I know some people on these forums have put on weight but never this much in such a short space of time.
I would have logged on yesterday to report this but I have been so depressed since yesterday that I didn’t bother.

    Wibbly wobbly
Don’t panic or feel you’ve necessarily done something wrong. This has happened to me last week. 40lbs off and I’d reach my goal and I thought I’ll just see how I go with 2 more fasts and would you believe it I put 2 lbs on. Then I looked back on my weight loss graph over the last 12 months I’ve been on 5:2 and found this has happened repeatedly. Maybe I overdid the celebration of reaching my goal on my nonfast day or maybe it’s just one of those things from my graph the biggest losses have come when I’ve put on weight the week before. So plough right on going on as I am and realize Monday is another week and I will fast as normal and on Thursday I’m hoping you and I will have lost weight!

those cursed scales–how a number can crash our ego– I reckon next week they will have a different story.and Of course if you are a woman there is a mirade of explanations for our ups and downs in weight over a couple of days–as someone wisely said here it is taking a look at the longer term graph that tells the true story. how are your measurements?

keep us informed and if you keep on putting on weight someone here will have a solution

Thanks Beavergong & double happy for your support.
Yes, I am female but no definite reason for this happening right at this time. I wish I HAD been celebrating my loss so far or some other excuse, but I honestly haven’t even eaten anything ‘bad’ or gone over the calorie amounts I should have. I haven’t been taking bothering with measurements, just going by the scales as that’s what motivates me personally.
It certainly does make you on a real downer especially after I thought I was doing well. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to carry on and see how it goes.

Yes yes carry on–Beaverong is right it is the overall graph. I added abit of exercise (nothing remotely vigorous !!) and it got me going again on my very gradual weight loss and re-reading the book is a reminder about the health benefits.
At one point I thought what would I do as an alternative ?–not calorie counting everyday (WW I put on more weight),not the range of liquid diets or Atkins or Dukan or the Zone, not packaged meals (JC and the feeling of deprivation daily) or the sweating suit (Yes the sweating suit!!) and certainly not giving in to old habits and for the scales keep going up. I was between a rock and a hard place !!!
So I agree with you wibblywobbly carry on–and have a nice cup of tea, my mum’s solution to any conundrum

Oh wibblywobby, you think nobody put on 3lb in a week … ask me about 3kg in the 2nd and 2.5kg ie 5lb in my 3rd. Plateaued and finally back to starting point at the 6 week mark. Then I shot up another 4.5kg! I’m somehow mutant (even my doc has said I’m not typical for most things) and trying ADF from Thursday just gone. I’ll see how that goes.

Arla I would strongly suggest to put away the scales, to focus on better health through this way of eating. Believe me I know what it is to like to have my ego and self worth chained to the scales. and as I said above–what is the alternative–we can all testify that none of them work. You may not be dropping kgs at the moment but you can be taking care of your inner health in the meantime.
You havent mentioned how your measurements are, are your clothes looser?.

One thing i think we all need to be alert to is the rebound effect of sugar and sadly alcohol–the 2 things that go straight into the blood stream and provide instant energy and shut down our bodies’ fat burning capacity–may not be relevant just a thought (thinking about the foods that say low fat but in fact are loaded with sugar.–even low alcohol wine is actually higher in sugar that regular.

Arla – Oh dear, your situation sounds a lot worse than mine – sorry. We must remain positive and we can beat this!! I am just putting my situation down to a ‘hiccup’ and hopefully whatever my body has decided to do will sort itself out in time for my next weigh in. Bodies are weird things at times, ha ha. Good luck with your ADF I hope it kickstarts things for you again. I will stick to 5:2 for the meantime and see how it goes. Let me know how you get on.

@double happy – putting away the scales sounds fine unless you’re gaining weight faster than you were *before* and you’re not an overeating sugar addict/boozer.

I did lose 2cm off hips & waist in the first month, but not more since. I have an endocrine disorder + PCOS and without tests to show that my inner health has improved the assumption it is is simply an assumption. I’m having my usual bloodwork done before seeing the specialist in March, but I know he won’t be happy that I’m even heavier.

Arla my suggestion to put away the scales comes from the perspective of being kind to ourselves–like you I had health issues, I was doing my best to lose weight then I’d get on the scales and my self esteem would crash–then a wise friend pointed out to me that getting on the scales was so destructive and the act of stepping on the machine didnt melt any pounds away.
I work in the education sector for special needs kids and the scales are the same as all the state testing we do–it doesnt inform how to bring about improvement on an individual level–all it does is remind the child and his family that there are ‘insurmountable’ issues. When we focus on what a student can do and what they are able to work on then there is a positive impact on self-esteem. and I reckon that’s what life is about–doing our best to make things better.
I imagine your Doc is onto your issues but would you consider looking up Dr Libby Weaver –she turned around 4 of us that had a range of issues. I think your doc shouldnt give you a hard time (he won’t be happy…) you are doing your best and need to be nurtured and congratulated.

Your experience of the scales crushing you is a good reason to put the scales away. They haven’t crushed me, in my case I need actual data if the tape measure isn’t decreasing AND the scales are increasing. I have a level of pragmatism that stops me being unkind to myself about weight. My specialist won’t give me a hard time but he’s not the only one who won’t be happy. I’m an outlier for many things so 5:2 may not be for me. Just because something works for many people, doesn’t mean it will work for all people. Someone has to be the outlier, and it could well be me.
