  • Hi. I’m New here and about to start this diet. In Australia, a current affairs programme had a piece on the 5/2 diet which has apparently been revised to allow females 800 instead of 500 calories on fast days. Is this true as I can’t find any literature on this. The books on sale are those for the lower calorie count.

Yes, I’m not sure about this either…the old diet was 600 for men, 500 for women…so is it now 800 for men and 700 for women? Clarification on this would be really helpful 😀

There are a few discussions on this forum about that issue. I’d start with this one:
    https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/on-fd-can-now-eat-800-calories-a-day/

If you want more then put “800 calories” into the search function and you’ll find other discussion.

As far as I’m aware the only place this information has been published so far is in the media, it hasn’t been incorporated into the diet info on this website yet.

Michael Mosely has also published a Blood Sugar Diet book which asks people to do 800cal every day for several weeks. If you really need a cookbook to manage your meals you could try this one as the calorie count would be right. The alternative is to just use a good online calorie counter and adapt things you already cook to fit into your fast days.

I would recommend trying the 500/600 cal option before deciding it’s too strict and switching to the higher cal limit. I’ve found that 2 days per week at 500cal is not that difficult, although when I get to goal I may switch to 800cal 1-2 days per week for maintenance.

    Thanks I will😊

    Hi Curly Fox
I am returning to the Fast Diet after giving up after my first efforts.
I am choosing to stick with the original 500 Calories for my fast days. During my First Attempt at this diet I was successful in losing up to 2 lbs per week without much effort. Total weight loss at that time over 3 months was about 20 lbs. But,it is nice to know that there “appears to be” some leeway in the number of calories. I am willing to accept some plateaus during this current effort.I do remember getting very frustrated when the weight loss progress did not always keep moving along at the same pace. My once a week weigh in, on my bathroom scale did not always register the “same” loss of pounds. Darn it.

Hi Mary. The principles of this diet are similar to another I did but I found that if I weighed myself after the fasting day I lost weight and If I don’t drink enough water or had not enough fibre I would plateau for a few days.Oat bran daily helps there. Won’t go but into detail but you can be up to 400g lighter after.💩

Hi… Im not sure im doing this right but it has been a year and I have not really lost weight at all. I really want to give this a shot and make it a lifestyle change.

Hi Jaadi – have your checked your TDEE? As you have 5 non-fast days each week, if you get the calorie intake wrong on those days you can easily undo any benefit from your 2 fast days.

I found that when I conservatively calculated my TDEE it was just 1400 calories, a long way from the 2000 calorie example on the website. If I ate 2000 calories on my non-fast days I’d probably be gaining weight not losing it. The calculator on this site advises you to be conservative when estimating your activity level and I have found this to be true – otherwise I don’t lose weight.

Every year older our TDEE goes down, every kilogram lost our TDEE goes down, so you either need to keep reviewing it or just calculate it for the weight you want to be then you can train yourself to eat the right amount of calories for your goal weight while you are dieting.

This doesn’t mean you have to count calories every non-fast day. Just do it for a couple of weeks until you are confident about food choices and portion sizes.

I also sometimes add a 3rd fast day to shift a plateau. I find it tough to do 3 500cal days in a week so if I add a 3rd day I am now choosing to do that extra fast day at 800cal.

Hi LJoyce…. Thanks so much for responding to my comment. My TDEE is 1640 so I try to stay within 400 cal on my fast days but mostly it does go to 450. And on my non fast days I do try to stick to 1600 but sometimes i do go over….

I also like your idea of adding a third fast day at a slightly higher calorie count. Thanks!!
