  • I’m talking about the one where you eat as much as you want 1 day, and only 500 calories the next day. I heard it’s recommended to eat all 500 calories in 1 meal, but is it required to lose weight? I was hoping I could snack all through the 500 calorie day.

    The eating all you can eat on your non fast day has me worried. There is no magic involved. Eat too much on your non fast day and in all reality you wont lose weight and could even put weight on. Eat up to your TDEE on your non fast days, and not any more. With respect to your fast days there is probably a marginal gain to be had in eating your 500 cal in one meal as opposed to spreading it out with lots of small snacks throughout the day. Your aim is to reduce your insulin spikes so that you don’t store excess glucose as fat. But the difference is marginal. Do whatever is easier for you and you’re more likely to sustain that eating pattern.

    Yeah, I meant eating reasonably on the non-fast day. But great, it sounds like spreading out on the fast day isn’t an issue. Thanks for your advice!

    Hi SweetPPP,

    You can eat your 500 (or less). however you like on your FD. Some people eat 3 tiny meals, some 2, some find eating all the calories in 1 meal. Some people find that when they are not hungry on a FD till they eat their first food, then it’s like Waking The Hunger Dragon and FD get’s harder. This group of 5:2ers eat/drink their calories at the end of the day, and some have nothing till the next morning. At firstit’s best to record your calories for FDs because we tend to underestimate calories if we don’t, and since we all come to 5:2 without a proper sense of portion size, it’s easy to eat an extra few hundred calories. Counting is tedious but beneficial for those first few FDs while you work out the FD regime that works best for you.

    Alex,
    SweetPPP asks for information about caloric intake and 5:2 and your response is to give a website on fashion that makes you look slim? Am I missing something here?

    IKR so many spam sites!! It can be crazy on forums like these, but I was talking about the alternate day diet, not 5:2, where you only have 2 fasting days. The one I was talking about is back to back, like 4:3. Would your advice about the fasting days still be true, you think?

    So, you’re asking about Alternate Day Fasting (ADF). I haven’t done it, but after 2 yrs on 5:2 and reading other people’s experiences, I don’t think it would matter whether you ate your 500 cals in 1 meal, or spread through the day. My comment about The Hunger Dragon would still apply. You won’t know if you’re one of those people till you’ve been doing it for a few weeks. If you are, 1 meal at the end of the day would work,. If you’re not, you could spread the 500 through the day. It’s up to you to decide which you prefer after you’ve tried it a few times.

    @merryme thanks!!

    I ve found trying to eat throughout the day makes me feel very hungry. Now I eat most of the food at about 6pm and just drink during the day and keep very busy.
