  • Hello, I wonder if anyone has any experience of this. Me and my husband have just started 5:2 having completed 2 fasts and so far are finding it easier than we thought! My husband has varicose veins which haven’t troubled him since he gave up smoking 18 years ago. However since starting the fasts he’s experienced irritating sharp pains with them which is worse when sitting down than standing. This occurs during fast days and for a day or two afterwards then goes away. He is on blood pressure and cholesterol meds. He used to have to take metformin as he was borderline type 2 diabetic but after losing several stone in weight this has reversed 😊 He would like to lose another couple of stone at least and we are both intrigued by the health benefits associated with IF so we want to stick with it.
Anyone have any clues as to what might be going on?

Hi tippi, sorry to hear about your husband’s problem. I too have varicose veins that hurt when I’m having a stressful or physically demanding day. I got them checked out, but the doctors think it is not serious enough for surgical intervention. By all means get them checked by your specialist, or at least let your GP know. When I started 5:2 I was already experiencing tiredness and my varicose veins were acting up. What helped me is to put on my compression leggings for 2-3 days in a row, even at night sometimes. A light, stretching exercises also seem to help in my case. I personally do not think IF in itself makes varicose veins worse.
