  • Hi!

I tought that I was understanding how intermittent fasting works, but now there is a situation that makes me confuse.

This week I already fasted 1 day: I had a normal (by “normal” I mean, no calorie restriction) dinner at 8pm and right in the next day, at 8 am, I started with a meal of 100 Cal. Later at night, I had a meal of 500 cal. So, it was 600 cal in total. The next normal meal I had was in the other morning (8 am again). In other words, I followed the general guidelines for 5:2 fasting.

The second day for fasting is today. My last normal meal was yestarday at 8pm. But today I will eat again only at 8pm, I mean 24 hours after my last meal. My question is: should I have a dinner of 600 cal or can i have a “normal” dinner (no calorie restriction)?

Just a quick tought about my question that may help clarify what I am asking: according to the book it seems that a “fast day” is 36 hours (like I did in day 1 if you read carefully). But for social reasons I found (only today, something I could not avoid) that this dinner will be a normal one, I cant fast. So, will I loose the benefits of fasting? In the other hand I think that its still a fast day, because it will be a fasting day of 24 hours…or not?? The book is not very clear on that.

You won’t lose any perceived health benefits but for weight loss purposes it isn’t a fast day if you eat more than 600 calories. Enjoy your dinner this evening and try again tomorrow.

    Ok, thanks for your answer.

So, I will go lunch right now lol.

@amazon, You might not call it “a fast day”, but going from 8pm to 8pm (normal dinner to normal dinner) IS a 24hour fast. Wether you end it with a 600cal dinner or 1000cal dinner, you still fasted for 24hours and get all the benefits (fatburn, etc).

This 24h approach is called Eat-stop-eat (by Bratt Pilon) it recommends 24hours fast (choose time that suits you, could be 2pm-2pm) once or twice a week and You will loose weight providing You eat “like a grownup” the rest of the time 🙂

I’m loosing weight this way, skipping breakfast and lunch, monday and thursday. I don’t care if my dinner ending my 24hour fast is 600 or 1000cals, as long as I don’t binge.

I like this strategy better than 5-2, because of it’s simplicity. I don’t have to count calories at all, Just don’t eat for 24hours, twice a week. And I eat a “normal” meal every day.

To me 5-2 is a little more complicated, I can see people have a lot of questions about the 600cals, 36hours, and recepies for special breakfast, lunch and dinner to stay under 600cals within a day.

Also, the small meals allowed in 5-2, actually break the FAST/fatburning as You provide glucose and raise insulin levels every time you eat (even small meals).

@oiro, if you are like me, then you also might find eat-stop-eat easier to follow and easier to fit into your life. 24h is simple to remember and you can switch to 9am-9am or 2pm-2pm what ever suits your rythm best.

Personaly I like 6pm-6pm, so i can cook and eat normal dinner with my wife and kids every day. Also the kids won’t see me skip lunch while I’m at work, they just see, some mornings where I just have coffee. With a (fit) teenage daugther one has to be carefull not to DIET to obviously.
