…a bit confused

  • I’ve been doing 5:2 on every Tuesday and Wednesday, find the consecutive days better, but when I was reading over the fast diet book it mentions you can go from 2pm to 2pm (page 102, point 7) and was going to give it a try, that would be a 24 hour period, but according to the faqs a fast day is 36 hours (negating sleep I guess), one seems to contradict the other. I was interested if any of the health benefits are lost when reducing calorie intake for 24 hours at a time instead of 36. I would like to stick to this long term.

    The 24-hour version/option is a “water fast”. Zero calories.

    The “classic” 36-hour fast (typically, after dinner on one day until breakfast two days later), is the one that includes 500/600 calories during the fast day.

    In the ADF studies, those fast day meals were one meal at noon, but there was no special reason that meal timing was chosen. It was more of a historical accident based on when they had fed their rats and mice. Most of us on the forums have migrated towards a single 500/600 calorie meal in the evening, but do whatever you find works for you.

    Hi there! I was wondering the same thing… this is what it says in the FAQ on the 5:2 website:

    In reality a fast day is 36 hours. If you finish your last full evening meal at 7.30pm on Sunday, then Monday is your fast day, you are not going to be eating normally till Tuesday morning 7.30am. That is 36 hours. If you decide instead to fast from 2pm on Monday until 2pm on Tuesday, then that will only be 24 hours. Wait till 7pm and that is 29 hours. To do 36 hours you would have to hold off till 2am on Wednesday, which would be a little inconvenient.

    The book goes into more detail. The book is not necessary, but it’s helpful for clearing up confusion over questions like this. However, my post above, is an accurate summary of the book on this point.

    Yes , the book specifies 36 hours. I believe they go from later in the evening to breakfast of the morning two days later. Like 8pm Monday, to 8 am Wednesday.
