  • Hi Everyone,

I’ve started on this plan today, so far I am OK, but getting hungry now it’s the afternoon. Will be glad to get home from work for dinner! My boyfriend has asked me to go out for dinner tonight and I was very excited at the prospect until I realised and then had to turn him down! 🙂

I’m in the UK (Bristol) I’m 37 but probably don’t act it, vegan and I have more weight than I care to admit to lose! At least 3 stone, anyway. I am hoping that IF will make it manageable as I have always struggled with my weight one way or another.

I would love to make some buddies on here for support and motivation!

    Xx

    Hi and welcome.
The hard part of the day is nearly done. Dinner, bath, book and bed will keep you busy and you’ll have your first fast done!

I admire your vegan choices. I limit dairy and eat meat once a week but fish and chicken are my protein choices.

I need to lose 3 more stones. I’ve lost 21 lbs since January 1st doing IF. I do a combination of 16:8 and 5:2.

Feel free to buddy up if you’d like x

    Hi,

good luck with your first day!
I am doing my second fast day today and also felt that the late afternoon was the worst time. But luckily, it passes, and we can always look forward to tomorrow. 🙂

I am Austrian, 40 and need a sustainable lifestyle that I can keep up – I should lose at least ten kilos, another 10 if possible. I thought I’d try to lose 10 kilos and then do a maintainance phase before tackling the rest. But it’s early days, so let’s see how it all goes.

How long have you been vegan?

    Austrian

My vegan food of choice on fast days (when I’m not doing zero cals) is Taifun basil tofu with a bit of salad. Absolutely delicious.

    Thanks all 🙂

First day wasn’t so bad after I got through the afternoon, I had cauliflower couscous and baked artichokes when I got home and felt fine on it. Actually felt pleased with myself for just getting through the day (normally I am a massive comfort eater) and I was surprised I felt quite energised this morning.

Victoria, sounds like you’re doing well! what is 16:8 all about?

Austrian, I have been Vegan about 3 1/2 years now.

Pot-bellied Heron, I love Taifun, I might try that – thank you!

Congrats on your first fast! Not the horror show you were expecting and that’s great!

    16:8
Fasting 16 hours. Eat window 8 hours eg 10am till 6pm for food. And don’t eat past 8pm as your body doesn’t process it in the same way.

    Good luck for future fasts.

    Victoria x

Hi everyone, are you all still sticking to IF? Or has this thread died out completely?
I’m also vegan and doing IF, and would love to have someone to chat with on here! I’m currently (for a couple of days so far) doing 16:8, but considering incorporating 5:2…

A bit of back story, I lost 20 pounds on the 5:2 in 2014, but have put everything back on since going to uni in the fall of ’14, so I am back at it. Seems I can only lose weight through IF, I don’t even see any temporary results from regular calorie reduction! 😉 I eat primarily high carb, low fat (HCLF) and also try to stay away from simple, added sugars and processed food, although I do eff up a few times a week and have too much fat and/or sugar(typically when I’m out to dinner).

I have about 4 stone (if not a bit more) to lose.

How are you all getting on?

    Alex x

    Hi ally and welcome:

Research has pretty well proven that the HCLF diet is the primary cause of the ‘obesity epidemic’, so it is not surprising you feel you need to lose some weight.

However, the genius of 5:2 is that it works regardless of the diet a person is eating. You simply have to adhere to the calorie restriction – 500 or less on diet days and TDEE or less on non diet days. Given the nature of your diet you may not lose as much or as quickly as those eating different diets, but you will lose as you did in the past. You just have to keep doing it.

    Here are some tips: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/.

    Good Luck!

Hi from Australia guys! I am wondering if the 5:2 Fast Diet is vegetarian friendly? I am eager to start the diet and start feeling ‘normal’ again. My weight has been yoyo-ing for the past 10 years and despite dieting with the occasional bursts exercise of I have managed to put on weight!!! I was recently asked if I was expecting because of by round belly. Potatoes are a favorite, sadly.

Nothing is proscribed on 5:2 so there is no reason that vegans, vegetarians or total carb addicts can’t succeed on it.

I’m a vegetarian with a high carb diet (just coz I like ’em) and I’m doing perfectly well, though I’m on ADF, not 5:2.

Hi Floey and Pot-bellied Heron. I would definitely also say it’s vegetarian-friendly! I’m vegan, and I’m doing very well! (Have lost 1kg since last week) 🙂 On fast days I’ve had success with soy granules in veggie sauces on top of zucchini pasta for instance, and that is really filling; or just good old heaps of veggies with some beans, followed by strawberries, or a banana for a snack 🙂 Yesterday I even swapped my protein-rich fast day meal for banana ‘ice cream’ – frozen bananas blended with a bit of soy milk, and topped with a teaspoon of cocoa powder – and some strawberries, veggie sticks and plenty of water, and that was all really filling and satisfying!
Floey, sorry to hear about that rude comment! 🙁 And Heron, carbs are awesome!

simcoeluv, thanks for your input. However, I don’t agree with a HCLF diet being the primary cause of the obesity epidemic, and nor do plenty of medical doctors who specialise in this field. Rather, the consumption of animal products (esp. animal protein), fat and oil is the culprit (especially if these ‘foods’ are eaten alongside highly refined carbs (refined sugars and flours) which is probably why carbs got the bad rap in the first place) as plenty of research has proven.

A whole foods, plant-based diet – including starchy carbs such as potatoes, rice, grains, etc, fruit, vegetables, legumes and a bit of nuts, seeds and some avocado, while excluding refined oils and all animal products – is the healthiest diet there is. Take a look at dr Michael Greger’s website (nutritionfacts.org), research Dr. John McDougall’s work, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, and plenty of other people. Also, do yourself a favour and watch Forks Over Knives – it’s on Netflix. It’s really interesting once you realise the lies we have been fed for all these years, and there’s loads of information out there on this subject.

And just to be clear, it’s not because of this way of eating that I’m struggling with my weight – it’s due to personal issues. In fact, I’ve never felt better than I have while eating this way; I was simply drawn back to the 5:2 diet because it’s a quicker way to lose weight for me (not to mention the allure of all the additional benefits, though weight-loss was my immediate motivation) 🙂

Sorry to everyone else for the long post!

    Hi ally:

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs!

    Good Luck!

    Hi allfitgirl!

Thanks for your contribution. The zucchini pasta sounds like a wonderful idea. I am thinig of making it as a pesto as well as a tomato based sauce – my mouth is watering as I write this!

Well I am glad to know that the 5:2 is vegan and vegetarian friendly. I have been vegetarian for most of my life and occasionally do vegan for a week or two but the sugar consumption is off the cgart.

Hello to everyone on here! Flora 🙂

    Have you read Proteinaholism, allyfitgirl?
I haven’t got around to buying it but the blog is an interesting read.
    http://proteinaholic.com/

    Hi Flora,
Yum, that sounds amazing 🙂 pesto has always been my favourite sauce!
Well, I believe it’s all about slow transition, and slowly incorporating more vegan meals into your daily diet, at least that’s what worked for most people I know who’ve gone vegan:-) but how do you mean you eat too much sugar? (Added sugars or carbs?)

    Hi Heron,
No, I haven’t! But I just had a look at the website and it sounds brilliant – just my kind of thinking 😉 have you seen Forks Over Knives? I believe it’s kinda the same message, and it’s great film!

So happy to have fellow veggies to chat with here 🙂
    X

allyfitgirl: I eat a lot of sweet foods, chocolates and carbs. This has been dramatically reduced since I started reading Michael Mosley’s books.

I love the movie Fork Over Knives!!

Hi, I’m not vegan but have been vegetarian (ovo-lacto) for over 20 years – I’m nearly 37 now. I have always stayed in a healthy weight range but have crept up in the last year to a weight I’m not happy with and it seems to be stubbornly sitting on my stomach :/
I started the 5;2 diet as soon as I read about it from a book in our local library last week- tomorrow is my 3rd fast day.
I love the idea of it – only one day of saying “No, I can’t have that” at a time – brilliant! I’m just hoping that it’s not too good to be true…
So far my foodie imagination is a bit lacking, I have just had boiled/poached eggs with salad twice a day on fast days…
    Di

Will have to watch Fork over Knives now 🙂

Hi everyone. How are you all getting on? I’ve lost 3.3 pounds so far, and am now at the lowest weight I’ve been all year! Wahey! 😉

Flora – me too. I am a fat-and-sugarholic when it comes to vices, but I’m working on it… And well done you!
Finding it hard to stick to my TDEE while visiting family, as we’re on Easter break now. Too many snacks lying about, calling my name…Happy I got in my two days before getting here, and I’m just trying to even all the eating out with lots of hiking, and a stern focus on my next fast day…

Hi Di! Welcome. 🙂 I can relate re the stubborn stomach fat (but add in hips, thighs and upper arms (and an at-risk double chin) as well for me). Wow on the 3 fast days already – well done! And yes, it is definitely much easier to stick to just 2 days of being highly dedicated to dieting… I find writing down whatever I crave on fast days to work pretty well, and sometimes you don’t even want to eat that mountain of junk you’d fantasised about when you’re finally able to. It’s great! Although sometimes I do, actually, want to eat EVERYthing. Also try to focus on the health benefits if ever you find yourself just dreading it…

I don’t blame you for your lack of imagination; I remember doing the same thing with eggs and salad when I first started the 5:2 in 2014 and had just gone vegetarian; you could also try a bean burger wrapped in a piece of romaine, topped with ketchup and mustard and accompanied by a huge salad and a bit of avocado; or you could do soup, or spiralised veggies instead of pasta, or cauliflower rice and curry… Mm, practically looking forward to fasting on Tuesday now.

I used to find fasting so damn easy, but now I need snacks to get me through the days – or rather, the evenings. I’ll save calories for some veggies or strawberries after my dinner, and that really takes the edge off for me if I feel like I’m depriving myself too much…

And yes, FOK is great! 🙂

Do any of you know the website fastday.com? X

    Hi Ally,
thanks for the food tips-they sound yum. I made a bit of an effort this week and had tofu wrapped in lettuce with capsicum , red onion and gherkin slices – was good 🙂 And veggie sausages grilled with tomatoes and pickled onions, and eggs on asparagus.
I’ve heard of cauliflower rice- will have to give that a go, it sounds interesting and with currie- yum!
I have to admit I am disappointed with my results on the diet so far. I’ve done 5 fast days – 2 and a half weeks- and my weight and size and the same. Also I’ve noticed my mood is really erratic the day after a fast and my energy is super low. Do you find that at all?
I’ve started following a run/walk app so my exercise is ok.. I had expected to see some changes by now- sounds like you are getting great results. Maybe I will just blame Easter and try again !!
    Di

You will look in the mirror in the weeks to come and realise that a great chunk of you seems to have vanished. It may be a fasting diet but it certainly isn’t a fast diet. I eat every other day and I only lose half a pound a week on average. The week before last I put on 3 pounds.
In 6 months I’ve lost around 2 stone which, on me, is at least 2 inches off my waist and undoubtedly more just above it. It may be slow but it’s easy and it works. If I gave up booze and cut back on the carbs I’d have probably lost that 2 stone in half the time but I’d be pretty miserable.

    Thank PBH, very encouraging 🙂

    Hi Nita,

Excuse my ignorance but I have to ask, what does a vegan eat as comfort food? It cant be chocolate (or most biscuits)? Is it just straight sugar?
