  • Hi there

I decided on Monday to give 5:2 a shot. I lost 6.5 stone in slimming world around four years ago, but I have three stone back on, and I am totally ashamed and disgusted with myself.

I have tried to get back in to S.W, but its just not working the same for me now,

I find there’s weeks I am very good and will put on half pound, get totally disheartened and go totally off the rails.

I need to stay away from the scales for a while and judge my success rate by my clothes etc. And maybe just weigh in once a month.

So, this is my first “2” day, I had dinner at 6pm yesterday, and as yet, I’m not that hungry.

I woke up with a bad cold, so I just sipped a Lemsip, and hot blackcurrant diluted juice, no added sugar type.

I plan to eat later, and back to normal tomorrow, having breakfast around 6am, so that’s 36 hour fast, is that correct.

Any tips for a newbie? I intend to follow the SW plan on “5” days, I have a physical job, and exercise 30 mins a day, but will increase this gradually,

I am drinking lots, between water, peppermint tea, coffee, and dilute juice.

    Thanks

I’ve started with 2 day fast too 🙂 Thursday and Friday last week and eating a little below the TDEE each day on other days as I’m very inactive however I’m calorie counting and planning meals ( nutritionally balanced ) well using nutracheck app – I wish you well – I did ask a question about the weight tracker here, but had no reply – however if you know id be keen to sort it 🙂 what are the goals and measurements part – I won’t know what my waist will be till I start losing weight – so far ( less than a week ) I’ve lost 4.8lbs 🙂 X wishing you well. Ps I upped my housework in a few bouts of 20 mins or so which added to my exercise overall – when I lose more weight I’ll do more – I and definitely stronger in my muscles and move quicker around the house 🙂 and yes I think that is a 36 hr fast ?

    Hi

I intend to fast on Wednesday and Friday this week,

And then Monday and Thursday next week

I have to change my fast days to fit in with my rota at work. I dont want to be fasting on my long days at work until I get the hang of it all anyways! So its now 18 hours since I have eaten, although I spent a chunk of that time asleep, I do feel fine, I have drank 1600mls of fluids already today, so I imagine that is helping.

I plan on having wholemeal bread and ham later, but at the moment I just dont feel like it, I don’t know if it is because I have the cold, but I’m not having it until I really want it.

    Hi,
This is my second day on the 5:2. Today is a fasting day, had 1/2 banana and some yoghurt for breakfast so not feeling the burn yet. Not sure what I’ll having for lunch so already have learnt my lesson…. Plan plan plan, makes things much easier.
I have been yoyo dieting for the best part of 20 years. I’m really hoping I can do this as a lifestyle choice rather than seeing it as a diet. I would like to lose 3 stones and then maintain a healthy weight. I have a long term illness so can’t exercise but I do go walking with my dog when I have better days. I’m feeling really positive and looking forward to sharing my journey with you all 😊

I have a wee sheet of paper with the calories of a few really handy things, eg beans and toast, soup, ham toastie, etc. I plan initially to keep fast days really simple, plenty of fluids, etc

Do you plan on weighing in each week?

I was going to go by my clothes and avoid the scales for a while anyways!

    Hi piglet,

Are you doing a 24 or 36 hour fast as one of your fast days? I can appreciate that you have a cold but Id stay well away from juices on your fast days. In fact Id stay well away from juices at any time!! You might as well just eat a couple of table spoons of sugar instead, same effect as drinking juice. If you want the benefit of fruit, then eat a piece of fruit.

Look very closely at the sugar content of packaged foods. You will be stunned at how much is in there. Choose wisely.

    Good luck.

It is NAS dilute juice, does that make any difference?

Very few calories in it when diluted, I’m just using warm water as I don’t want to take too many Lemsip,

    Thanks

Oh yes, this is a fast day, haven’t eaten since 6pm yesterday.

    Hi Sarah,

What kind of yogurt was it? Go for one that has a high fat content and low sugar content!! Yes that’s correct. Try and stick to plain Greek yogurt with less than 5% sugar and more than 10% fat. Rather than a banana try and choose from all the berry fruits instead. Blackberries, strawberries, blueberries etc. The sugar content will be lower.

Stay away from breads on your fast days. Simple carbs like bread, rice, pasta will make fast days difficult.

    Hi piglet,

Not sure what NAS is? But fructose (fruit sugar) is fructose. Why not swap it for a squeeze of lemon in hot water instead? Having said that I do allow myself to have two coffees with a splash of milk (lactose) on my fast days.

If youre doing the 36 hour fasts for the other benefits, apart from weight loss, then that’s fantastic!! Im in maintenance mode so do 6:1 but I still do a 36 hour fast. It really trains your body to be good at burning fat. By the end of 36 hours you should just be into ketosis. Don’t be scared of ketosis, this just means that you are deriving the majority of your energy from turning fats into ketone bodies, the other fuel your body can use. The primary one is glucose. If your burning glucose your not burning (a lot of) fat. Most people confuse ketosis (even doctors) with ketoacidosis. Ketosis is good, ketoacidosis is bad. A 36 hour or when I used to do 60 hour fasts will not get you anywhere near ketoacidosis.

NSA is no added sugar, I also drink lots of flavoured water at 7 calories per litre, I will build these drinks into my allowance on fast days.

I’m using an app ( nutracheck ) to calorie count, plan meals, record fast day recipies and non fast day recipies and watch the intake in both fasting and non fasting days – I just scan ( barcode ) the items I want put the weight in like 80g of blueberries and it automatically tells you how many calories – it scans everything from UK and US supermarkets too -, fruit, yogurts, meat, pasta, cakes biscuits etc – but I literally got rid of crap from cupboards on saturday- and just bought ‘wholesome foods’ – which I’m still scanning – I’d be lost without it just trying to make decisions on what I think was a ‘good food’ choice – I’m limiting myself a bit around calories for the TDEE , but I also want to watch the sugar and fat content of my weeks making sure I still have some good fats and space for family weekly meet ups for dinner ( no skin ) roast turkey dinner at our local carvery 🙂 one day I didn’t use the app, made a dinner with those cheap packet noodles and they were 636 calories 😳 without anything else added – I’d already eaten it so had to allow for that the following day – even so I’ve lost a good amount this week and still 1 day to go before 2nd week fast – 🙂

So, 22 hours after my last meal, I have just eaten, wholemeal bread and ham. 170 calories. I am finding it really easy so far, granted this is my first fast day. I have drank plenty, and keep thinking about what I will eat tomorrow 😊

So there is my first fast day almost over,

I am in bed and finished eating for today.

I must say… And I hope this doesn’t come back to bite my big a$$.. But I found today really easy, wasn’t hungry at all. Maybe it is because I drank plenty, and have a cold, which usually brings a reduced appetite.. Regardless, I’m happy it was so easy, I hope Friday goes just as well.. It’s going to be my second fast day of week one!

This is my first fast day, and so far, so good! Coffee in the morning with 1/4 c. almond milk (10 cal), worked out during my lunch break (which was actually awesome and took my mind off food for an hour), and I was starting to feel a little shakey after the exercise so I had a big bowl of miso soup (75 cal). My plan is to go as long as I can before eating to truly get the benefits of fasting… I’m hoping I’ll be able to go longer and longer each time until I just have dinner at the end of the day.

Tomorrow is my second fast day, I plan on having porridge around 10am, wholemeal toast and the mere scrape of strawberry jam at 2pm. That’s 240 calories in total,
I am undecided about what else to have, maybe soup around 6pm.
Plenty of water and peppermint tea in-between!

Just a note, I read in the book that the foods you choose on fast day should be low GI. Try to avoid the bread I reckon. I’ve been going no complex carbs. Chicken breast grilled with seasoning or flavour like Cajun or chargrill Swartz seasoning, with a mahoooosive tomato, cucumber, onion salad. Some broccoli and pearl parley. And some raw carrot on hou modus. It takes ages to eat, loads of different textures and under 500 cals. Maybe a weird mixture for some people to have salad and veg on one plate but it works because I use knife and fork and then finger for the carrots and houmous so it takes ages to eat. Xxxxx (doesn’t help when I watch masterchef afterwards though! Lol!)

I’m just trying to go with things that are really handy, and have me out of the kitchen in a few minutes. Its low calorie wholemeal bread.

So I didn’t feel like porridge, so I’m just at spicy soup now, 160 calories, its 16 hours since I last ate anything. I’m really not finding fast days so bad, but this is just my second one.

    Hi piglet74,
This is my first fast day. I’m 58 and short with 160 lbs. can’t seem to get my weight to go down, just seems to keep going up,up, I’m always been a yo yo dieter but not anymore. I wish you all the best on your first fast day. I will be fasting right along with you.

So far I’ve had a banana. Saving my calories for dinner.. I have been told that I didn’t eat enough on all my other diets. Or didn’t exercise enough. I just hope this diet works like everyone is saying it does.

    Hi Betty and welcome:

It works if you do it! Here are some tips: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Hi, I’m new to the forum, lost about 16lbs since christmas using fasting but went way off plan this whole week as had a lot on so hope that by taking part on the forum i can get back to where i was. I gained back about 6lbs (mostly water i imagine)in 7 days.

My wedding is in August and i want to get down to 101/2 stone so a stone to go!

Thank you so much for your support!! I will be reading up on everything you sent me.🤓

My first fast yesterday went really well! It was surprisingly easy, especially with working out around lunch time. I’m kind of excited for my next one on Monday. I always flip flop with wanting to not have to think about food but also want to be actively conscious of what and how I’m eating… and feel like this could be the answer since it’s a little of both.

Also- I know I’ve only had one fast day so far, but I’ve been able to use the bathroom 3x in the past two days which is CRAZY for me. Typically I’m LUCKY if I get that per week. So I shouldn’t get too excited just yet because it could totally be coincidence, but hey, I’ll take it!

So this is the start of my second week, and my third fast day.

I’m finding it really easy so far,

Today I had soup and a yoghurt. Total of 250 calories so far.

Will keep some for tonight, after work.

Hi all. I’ve been doing this two and a half months and have lost 14 lbs so far. This site has some really helpful people on it, there’s lots of info and research as well as good support.
I’m so glad that some of you are finding the fast days easy. I didn’t at first but gradually learned what to eat that quelled my hunger a bit (eggs and soups in particular), but I’ve had a few fast days where I’ve been hungry in the mid evening so have gone over the 500 a little, nearer 600. Some days I don’t eat anything till the evening meal, but days like today, where I’m hungry from mid morning, I just have to split it in three. I’m on low carbs too so not eating bread, pasta, rice or potatoes, though have carbs from vegetables and fruit, nuts and seeds. BigBooty’s advice on full fat yogurt I really agree with, and proper butter too, not margarines or substitutes. Fish is great too.
Really good luck. I do believe this is potentially a lifestyle.

Today is my second fast and it’s been a lot harder than the first one… I’m trying to keep busy, but things are work are pretty slow because we just moved into a new space and work hasn’t really picked up yet.

I went for a 2 mile jog at lunch time, then had some chicken broth. I was feeling too hungry to focus on my work, so I had some Greek yogurt with fresh blackberries. I’m really trying to get through to dinner. Ugh.

I can’t wait for the pasta bake I have planned for tomorrow’s lunch. Leftovers from the other night… whole wheat rotini, ricotta, kale, marinara sauce, and mozzarella on top…. can’t wait lol.

I have been doing this diet since January. My husband convinced me to do it after he lost 2 stone over the course of last year. I managed to lose a few pounds in January but since February I have stayed the same weight.
I find fast days easy, lots of water and have a calorie counted meal in the evening with vegetables. I don’t know whether I overeat on my non fast days or if under eating on a non fast day makes a difference.
I have downloaded the Nutracheck app tonight so will be scanning and monitoring what I eat for the rest of the week to see what happens when I weight in Saturday morning.

Something I’ve found that helps, if on paper it looks like I should be losing but I’m not, is to make sure to accurately measure the portions you’re actually eating. You may be doing this already, or aren’t counting calories on you eating days, but in case you’re not… try using a scale or measuring cups to see exactly how much 1/2 c. of something is as opposed to guessing. When I first started doing WW I was so good about measuring everything, but after a few months I was like “pshh I’ve got this.” but over time your estimations start to slip and you realize you’re over serving portions.

Well I am almost at the end of my 2nd of fasting. It wasn’t any harder than the first, although I’m looking forward to eating tomorrow. I don’t plan on getting on a scale for a few weeks. However when I first started I did weigh in and take my measurements, so I will know if there is any improvement.. Hoping for my clothes to fit me better and not think about what will fit me today!!!
For me it’s been a never ending battle since I was 10. Up and down. I’m 160 lbs on a short 5′ 2″ frame.
So for me this has to work!!!
I exercise 3 times a week. I really hate exercise but must keep it up not only for myself but for my husband.
If I don’t go to the gym my husband will find an excuse to not go.
Anyhow, I wish you all luck. I’m still hanging in there.

Im so happy to see that people are finding their first fast day easy ! I have just finished my first fast day, about to go to sleep and i found it super difficult. I am quite active and walk everywhere and i felt drained today, i don’t know whether it was psychological or not. I had porridge for breakfast, carrot sticks and houmous (low fat low sugar) for lunch and a chicken breast and broccoli for evening meal. My stomach was constantly reminding me all day that i was fasting.

2stonestolose I’m sorry to hear your having a hard time. I know I’m finding my time at the gym is not as easy. It’s like I have no energy. I’m hoping it’s because it happened to fall on my fast day.
I don’t eat much on my fast day,but I drink a lot of water and anything that is calorie free. My calories for today are 260 calories. I find it easier this way. Hang in there! Hopefully it will get easier.

    Hi 2stone:

Your carbs made you hungry. Many find one evening meal high in fat works best on diet days.

    Good Luck!

    2stone,

You’ve done one fast!! You have to be realistic as to what you’re going to be able to do with regards to exercise. I suspect that your body is almost 100% reliant on burning carbs for your energy needs. Your ability to utilise fats as your preferred energy source would be almost zero. You need to give your body time to adapt. If you want to exercise (at a high level) then you probably need to give it a few months. If you just want to adapt to restricted carb intake without strenuous exercise then give it about 4 weeks.

I do a lot of bike riding and initially I wasn’t able to ride (at a fast pace). Now I can do it with ease. You have to be realistic though, carb burning is more efficient that fat burning but with some training you should be able to get to within 90-95% of what you can achieve on carbs.

Yesterday was the start of my second week, and my third fast day, and I did not struggle with it at all, so far so good.

I bought new electronic weighing scales and they were delivered yesterday, so I weighed in this morning, and I am 4.5 lbs lighter than my last weigh in at slimming world , which was 3 weeks ago(I’m not going back to the class at the moment, I’m just going to concentrate on 5:2)

In the three weeks since I did not go to slimming world group, I had about ten days of being really bad, Easter holidays, and then a few days of being good at the slimming world plan, then a week on 5;2,

So I am sure there was a weight gain, then a loss, and maybe a difference in the scales,

Although I can see a difference in my work uniform, it is getting a wee bit looser, but I will stay away from the scales now and just weigh in once a week, on Tuesday mornings.

I know a lot of people are saying to stay away from carbs etc on fast days, but I usually have toast and jam, or beans and toast etc. It works for me, its quick and easy, and I’m only in the kitchen a few minutes, and if you don’t go over your calorie allowance, does it really matter if you have wholemeal bread?

Is the calories in not more important?

I have read it doesn’t matter what you eat, as long as you stay within the limits, is this correct?

Maybe I will ditch the toast when the weight loss slows?

I think i will take a 30min walk today , I’m still suffering from this cold and cough, just cant shake it off, but I want to get a little bit of exercise in too.

Good luck to everyone weighing in and fasting today xxx

Piglet, I think every body is different; some people find cutting out carbs helps them, others don’t. For me, I’ve never been able to stick to anything that restricted all carbs (including whole grains and fruit), and the most effective method is one which you’ll stick to. I believe the specific “avoid carbs on fast days” advice comes from the fact that you want to train your body to use fat for energy instead of glycogen stores. However, as long as you are in a calorie deficit, it shouldn’t matter in the long run.

And good idea about avoiding your scale… even once a week can be too much, since even differences in your bathroom routine can have significant impacts on your weight on any given day… taking your measurements/progress pictures and noticing when your clothes fit better are much more reliable metrics.

So tomorrow is my 4th fast day, looking forward to it again. I’m starting to think that I can do 4:3 some weeks, but maybe I will get into it a bit more first, this is only my second week!

I came in at 1500 calories today, and tomorrow I plan to make a “pizza”, wholemeal wrap for base, then a tablespoon of tomato puree, chicken, bacon and pineapple, its coming in at just under 700 calories, this will be halved with my mum, and I will eat around 4pm tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone fasting, feeding and weighing in xxx

    Hi piglet,
Tomorrow is my 3rd fast day. I too, am looking forward to it. So far not finding it too hard at all. Just hoping it works. I feel great on my fast days. I would have never thought I would be saying that!!! Here’s to our journey…good luck.🍷

    Thanks betty,

Good luck tomorrow, what are you planning on eating?

    Piglet,
I usually have 2 cups of coffee in the morning with a banana.
Lunch is usually V8 (vegetable juice)
    Dinner is soup.
I drink a lot of water, tea and anything with no calories in it.
Thanks for asking. Everyone has their own routine I guess. I’m sure I’ll have to mix mine up a bit, so I don’t get tired of it.

Yes, we all have our own wee ways, my first two fast days, I had tea and toast, to get in and out of the kitchen in minimal time!

But as I found the fast days pretty easy.. I will be more adventurous tomorrow with my “pizza”, and like yourself.. Plenty of water, some peppermint tea, etc.

Hi everyone! Today is my third fast day… it’s nice to see other people who are still just starting out like myself and who are optimistic! I am trying to work my way up to only eating a 500 cal dinner, so I’ve planned coffee for this morning and chicken broth for lunch after my workout. I do have some plain greek yogurt and cucumber salad in the fridge at work just in case, but I’m gonna do my best to stick with fluids (water, tea, coffee) for the day if I can.

Dinner tonight will be homemade curried lentils, and steamed veggies with lemon, garlic, and Parmesan. If I manage to not need a mid-afternoon meal, I’ll make a chocolate protein shake for dessert.

Good luck to everyone fasting today!

abitun….plain yogurt and cucumbers. That sounds so refreshing. I bet I can find that for a non FD lunch at the office caf.

It’s actually two separate things, the cucumber salad is super thin sliced cucumbers with rice wine vinegar and sesame seeds… but having them with yogurt does sound good, I like your thinking! Maybe even some fresh dill too. I may have to try it!

abitum, I doubt I’ll find rice wine vinegar at the office!!!

Yeah, I make my lunches at home. Healthier and far cheaper. Where I am in Cambridge, MA it’ll cost you $9-12 for a sandwich. Woof.

Also- update- it’s almost 3 and I’ve had coffee, tea, tons of water, and chicken broth and I’m still not hungry. Way better than Monday! I don’t want to jinx myself but I *think* I can get through to dinner and break my fast with essentially a full meal.

I honestly feel great. I got slightly light headed a little while ago, but some more tea helped that. I’m sure 90% of it is placebo and all in my head, but I really feel so much more energetic and awake and LESS hungry than I did Tues/Wed at this time.. typically after lunch I get into a funk and I’m exhausted and just want to eat. Today I’m cruising through the afternoon.

PLUS my belly is happy. Do you know how hard is it for me to have a happy belly?! It’s hard. According to my mother, the doctor told her to put some prune juice in my bottles as a baby because even THEN I was constipated and cranky. So thumbs up all around basically.

There is my 4th fast day almost over, the “pizza” was delicious! And so filling!!! Half of it was 350 calories, so I am definitely going to make it on a feeding day and have it with some actifry chips or wedges.

Obviously different toppings will give different calorie counts, but it was so filling and lovely and just hit the spot on the fast day, and was something more adventurous than my usual fast days

I just figured out that not only was today a fast day, but also 16:8, does anyone find this helps?

I will have a few more cups of tea, a peppermint one and maybe a camomile and orange one.. I think its called sleep easy, but it is really nice too, and that’s me for today

As yet I haven’t got a clue what to eat tomorrow!

I’m very disappointed to report a 2lb gain this week, and I felt like I done very well
Around 1500 calories on feed days, 500 on fast days,

I will stick with it though,

I think, sorry if TMI, but I dont have periods, I take depo, and usually coming up to time to get it, I am very bloated and would have weight on,

So I’m due to get it this Friday and while I dont feel at all bloated, maybe there’s something going on inside that I can’t see!!

Fast day today, haven’t eaten yet, good luck everyone xxx

Good luck Piglet. 2lbs is not a big increase especially with hormones flying around.

Today is my first fast day, have drunk lots of herbal tea, had 2 satsumas at lunch and planning a on having chicken and brown rice for dinner.

So far it has been ok not to eat at work, have avoided the sandwich vans and biscuits. Think I will make dinner as soon as I get home though!
