  • Hi All,

I have been thinking about the 5:2 diet for a little while now.
The majority of my weight has creeped on due to sadness. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for a number of years, but this year has been the worst – I lost a baby early in pregnancy almost 4 months ago. I’ve been doing quite a bit to help my mind (including counselling and mindfulness) and now I want my body to follow.

This month is my first time trying the diet. Today is my first-day fasting. I have a desk job and find I emotionally eat (boredom, sadness, stressed, annoyed) as well as a habitual eater – it is midday, therefore, it is lunch, regardless of my level of hunger.

I didn’t appreciate the more interesting meal options and menu ideas I could have prepared – I’ve packed fruit and veg, scrambled egg, a bit of cheese and crackers as well as a yogurt for today! On Thursday, my next fasting day, I will try so something a little more balanced like couscous and roasted veg or perhaps some berry porridge.
I definitely need 3 small meals in a day… My mind would have a meltdown if I only gave myself 2 meals!

How do you curb the emotional or habitual eating triggers?

    Hello Rosettafaery

Welcome to the forum and this WOL (way of life). I hope you’ll find many people here who have “been there done that” and who are willing to share their experiences with you. You are definitely not alone in recognising that you eat when bored, sad, out of habit etc. One good thing about 5:2 that I’ve found is it helps me tune into what my body is telling me – am I really hungry? or is this just a passing twinge?

Mindfulness of this is a good first step to curb those eating triggers. Doing something distracting – going for a walk, googling something interesting, even having a drink of water, can help interupt those triggers and get you through the moment.

Good luck for your first FD. They do get easier, I promise! 🙂

    (Love your handle, btw!)

    Thanks for the guidance!

The handle came from my frustration when attempting to join twitter and find a unique name. I was obviously staring at my collection of fairy ornaments when inspiration struck and I searched for fairy names. Rosetta came up “Rosetta the garden fairy is from the popular Disney Fairies franchise.” Rosetta Fairy was taken I believe and so I used the more celtic spelling of Faery!

I didn’t give much info on myself.
My name is Nikki and I’m 32 from Anglesey, North Wales in the UK. I live with my husband (7 years of happy marriage) and my pet cat Walter!
I enjoy crafting, baking (but usually inflict the bakes on my colleagues), occasionally running and just relaxing.
I had a kidney transplant in 2011, donated from my Dad. Just as a side note I have had the okay from the hospital as “you know your body best”.

I look forward to keeping in touch with you and hopefully shedding a little extra baggage too!

Hi, Rosettafae. So very sorry to hear about the loss of your pregnancy. Yes, that can certainly lead to depression. You can make this Fasting Lifestyle work for you. Who knows, maybe losing weight will give you a goal that will help you to lift your depression. We can hope.
We are all here to help you on your journey. keep us posted on progress.
