  • Hi

I’m going to start this next week so I can prep properly but I’m really nervous. I’m getting married in October so want to lose a few stone before hand but am so worried that I’m going to be absolutely starving constantly.

Does anyone have any tips and tricks to keep the hunger at bay or a good first day recipe to get me started?

    Thanks

    Hi Day-n-night,
Welcome here and welcome to 5:2!

I was SO nervous before my first fast day too. But that was nearly three years ago and I have been 5:2ing ever since.

Yes prepare what you will eat. My tips are 1. Remember to drink lots (no, not alcohol 😉 ) 2. Save most of your calories for the evening. 3. Know that you can do anything for just one day. 4. The morning after a fast day feels great!

PS If you are like me, and sugar sets off the munchies, then don’t eat sweet things on your fast day!

best wishes and all good things

    Thank you!
Fantastic. I’m worried that I will struggle but I guess the key is in the prep.

    What meals would you recommend?

Soup! It makes your belly feel so full.

When I first started 5:2 I had a small bowl of porridge in the morning and a large bowl of soup in the evening.
Soon I cut out the porridge and just had cuppas during the day and my miso soup with chicken, mushrooms and veggies in the evening

I love having the same thing each fast day, I know it works and it is so easy it means I have two days a week I don’t think about food.

But everyone is so different, you might have to count your first few fast days as experiments until you find out what works best for you.

Here is a thread of recipes that might give you some ideas: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/southern-hemispherites-fd-recipes/

That’s fantastic, thank you so much for all of your help 🙂

day_n_night yes the first few fast days feel strange, but i ditto what cinque said that you soon get into a routine. You get hungry but it goes away after a cup of tea and its only one day at a time! I skip breakfast and split the calories between lunch and supper. Be rigorous about calorie counting on fast days until you’ve developed a routine. I too eat mostly the same things on fast days then its easy to do and there are no excuses to fail!

Have a few ’emergency’ snacks to hand in case you just HAVE to have something to eat eg celery sticks with salt! And any favourite herbal teas. I find marmite tea stops hunger pangs for several hours. Don’t be scared of a little hunger as its not for long and 5:2 works really well, so the rewards are there waiting for you!

Just be careful on non fast days. You can’t feast too much and expect this to work. Normal healthy eating is required!

Good luck and join the monthly challenges – they are a great support.
