  • Hi all

I’ve noticed reading some of your posts that a lot of people tend to take the fasting days quite literally, and end up skipping breakfast and/or lunch just to have a big meal at the end of the day. While I appreciate that for some people that works and that’s fine, I know that for others starving yourself 2 days a week is not motiviting enough and makes you feel down – trust me, I’ve been there! So here is my plan that I use successfully on fast days to help me feel full, satisfied and strong enough to go to the gym, and all under 500 calories

For breakfast I always need my tea or coffee, so I allow myself 1 cup with milk and 1 teaspoon of Splenda (only 2 cals!) and I also have a low calorie cereal bar – something no more than 65-70 cal a bar is usually enough. For lunch I make myself a really nice salad with 2 different kinds of vegetables (pepper, sweetcorn, peas, carrot, cucumber, etc) and some meat (chicken, ham, tuna) for around 100 cals (obviously this will depend on what and how much you have, but salad is great for filling you up as it is water based, and it looks and tastes pretty good too!)

For dinner, I cheat a little and have a can of soup, but homemade would be a great option too! Soup is another great stomach-filler as it is a liquid so it always leave me feeling stuffed! Obviously a low calorie option soup is better, but it depends on how well you’ve done during the day. Sometimes, for a treat, I have a soup that is about 140 cals, and then have a little pot of jelly for only 9 cal!

    But that’s not all…

Feeling peckish and its not yet 11 am? Have some grapes – 100g of red or green grapes are only 64 cals, and great for snacking on over a period of time.

Finally, there is room for one more afternoon snack – I usually have this about half 3 – 4 pm before I finish work – and it’s a pot of low calorie, low fat greek style yogurt. While there are yogurts out there that are really high in calories, Weight Watchers do some for no more than 50 cals a pot, and it’s a great way to fill the stomach before going to the gym without making you feel ill!

So, for the totals = breakfast is about 130 cals; lunch is for me no more than 100; dinner can go up to about 150 depending on the brand and whether or not it’s homemade; and the snacks equate to 114, so that means I’m eating 494 calories on fast days! As a result I’m never hungry because I eat more regularly, not saving my calories for dinner because by then I’ve eaten enough during the day to keep me satisfied and I don’t feel cheated!

Give me your thoughts – I’ve lost 6lb in the last 2 weeks!

    Hi Tori,

Some follow 5:2 for the health benefits as well as the weight loss, so not eating until lunch or dinner extends the fasting period which in theory improves the health benefits.
There are also a lot of people, myself included who find that once they start eating they don’t want to stop, and find it easier to eat as late as possible on a fast day.
Then there are those who like to eat all their calories in the evening as they find that going to bed hungry prevents them from sleeping.
That is the beauty of this WOE, we can change it so that it works for our particular needs.

I have no problem not eating all day if I am busy, and I don’t feel deprived or cheated. It took me a few weeks to get used to it though

    Good Luck

I tried (I really did) not to eat during the day and go for the breakfast/lunch option but I have found having a veggies lentil soup – small serve at lunch and dinner works better for me. I just felt too aweful and grumpy. Constipation is still a problem though why??? I also sort of had the impression that carbs (bread etc) should be avoided because of insulin etc. One day i did have porridge for breakfast and this was not nearly as successful (in terms of managing) as an egg with vegies for breakie

Are you really constipated or is it just the result of eating much less?
Keep the fluids up every day, especially on fast days, and keep moving, if you’re not exercising try to find time to do so, even if it is just a brisk walk.

Unattached in London (website/blog) has great 5:2 recipes. I was also thinking that one way to ‘spice’ this up (give it a temporary change) might be to try ‘raw’ one week or vegan or eating all spicy food…just to change the focus and see if it helps with the constipation thing… At the moment i am fine I am SERIOUSLY HOOKED on unattached in Londons Caulifower and tomotoe soup (you can make this a meal by adding lentils – but weigh them so you know how many calories you are really getting… 30 gms in tiny like 2 tablespoons)…. I am drinking a tonn of water and it seriously is constipation..coated tongue.. cant ‘go’, hard stomach, aweful breath… yukky really

I had the constipation problem too and I seem to have conquered it with “Isabgol” or fleaseed husk. A couple of teaspoons with some soup, or milk at night will do the trick. The only calories are in the soup or milk. Hope that helps.

This is what is so good about this plan is that you can eat your 500 whenever you like and what’s good for one isn’t good for the other. I was a breakfast eater all my life but decided to cut it out and save the calories for lunch and dinner and it was hard for me to believe but I do not miss breakfast the tiniest bit. No mid morning slump or any kind of hunger but I do have a coffee. I also like the idea of a longer fasting period from the night before which has apparently greater health benefits. I never snack during the day so it’s lunch and dinner which is mainly in the form of veggie soup or homemade chicken soup as protein is filling and staves hunger away. I never eat carbs such as bread, rice, potatoes, pasta as they are low GI and cause a high sugar spike which then can make you feel hungary not long after, and never any processed bars. The less time eating the better it is and I try not to think of food at all but I do love my 3 teas or coffees which I couldn’t do without . Good luck
