  • Hi everyone
My hubby love to cook and he’s very good at it. He, too, wants to lose weight, but travels for his work and says it’s too hard.
Because of this, he wants to cook and eat well when he’s home and he wants me to enjoy his meals, too.

Has anyone had successes losing weight with their spouse? Was it a challenge to bring them on board? What worked…or didn’t work?

    Thank you!

    Hi RR,

Hubby and myself have been doing the 5.2 and we think it’s much better together.

We started the first time three years ago and lost 30 lbs each in 5 months..hubby then had two new knees, at this time we were swimming twice a week…everything stopped, no excerise ( not much 30 mins walk around the village 3 times a week) with him laid up people bringing things to eat and returning to usual eating over a year we put it all back on. 😁

We started again in December 2015.. I have lost 21 lbs and hubby 12 lbs, he has not been so strict as me. I had a go with the fast beach diet for 6 weeks with some forum girls which got me off a plateau I had been on, he didn’t join me on that but still lost weight on 5.2. He has been unwell for the past 6 weeks with a prolapsed disc so his weight is slow because he can’t walk.

It’s the best diet we have been on, I have thrown all the other diet books away and there were lots of them. A two day fast is easy two non negotiable days on eating, a rest from cooking..nice..then eat under your TDEE, each of you will be different..top right corner ‘FAST DIET TRACKER’ I eat about 1200/1300 calories on a non fast day, hubby a bit more..depends how much you have to loose.

Good luck and give it a go. If you have weight to loose only you can decide to do it, even for health reasons. We are both 67 and we want to live longer, when you fast your body repairs its-self, everything helps.

There’s a picture of Michael Mosley before and after when he finished fasting, that made my husband come on board..don’t know where it was..try and find it on line.

You have to be committed or it’s not worth trying..good luck.x

    Go to the

Before and After ….page near the bottom of the forum then scroll down and look for

Michael…he has his pictures there 3″ or 4″ down

    Hope it helps x

Thank you for the testimony! Found the picture of Michael and will show this to hubby. We are in our 60’s as well.

What I love about this way of eating is the freedom.

Congratulations on 21#. And thanks again for posting, I’ll show the pics of Michael in the aptly named, “Before and After” forum 😀

We are 69’and 73. My husband is a great cook,,who loves experimenting with recipes, too, so we’ve really tucked in since retiring. We want to stop some aches and pains, as well as seeing our grandsons grow up.

I read the original 5:2 book from cover to cover and marked some recipes. We started on 25th April.
He likes making them and we have found it easy so far. We keep busy on fast days, eat breakfast late and have lovely crunchy salads with dinner.

It’s far better than trying to lose weight on my own, as he used to undermine me – and he’s the one with lots to lose!

I’m hoping that tomorrow’s weigh in will show I’ve lost a stone.

    Hi P

Thank you. I think your habit of eating bfast late and staying busy are things that would help me.

We have both thought a low glycemic filet would help us lose weight And lose some sugar cravings. We haven’t been doing this but just a week or so, too early to tell.

    Thanks P for sharing,
    Susan

My pleasure, Susan. Sad to report, i have put on 2lbs! Tomorrow is my weekly weigh day though, do I’m crossing my fingers that the normal ‘digestive processes’ will help.

    Hi P

That’s too bad, but you know, that’s happened to me, too, more times than I can count. I think you’re right about “digestive” issues, for sure.

Don’t be discouraged as tomorrow is another day. The way I see it is, as long as I’m working on it, there is no guilt. It’s when I give up that my self esteem drops, which leads me to eating poorly and so the cycle goes…

    We will do this!
    RR

I’ve had the biggest fast ever today. Two coffees and satsuma this morning, then trying to sort out my email problems all day. Not a minute to be hungry.

    HI P

Wow, that’s awesome. were you okay the next day, as in, did you feel okay, did your body seem to adjust or did it want you to make up the calories?

We are eating better, cutting desserts except on weekends. I’m still not getting to the fasting, but this has been a stressful summer. A major responsibility ends in a month, then retirement kicks in.

The 2 day fast still appeals to me on many levels. I’m going to do it!

We have been out of town, so am just catching up on email. I’ll write more promptly in future.
    Take care
    RR

I’ve found that I can go all day on two cups of coffee for breakfast and herb tea. One of the lovely experienced posters did tell me I’d get used to it.

I did the same yesterday. I fully intended to eat breakfast about 1pm, but we went out. I think keeping busy is half the battle.

Well done on cutting desserts, RR. It’s carbs we’ve accidentally cut someone. Never have a sandwich now or rarely potatoes. I love potatoes and never thought I’d cope without them.

The recipes in Miriam’s recipe book are brilliant,

    Polly

I’m thinking along the same lines. Just not eating on fast days. It seems like even planning for 500 calories has me thinking about food, which leads to rationalizing eating more food.

I’ve fasted with fluids in the past and did fine. I think I’ll try it. Eliminates thinking about it at all.

I am glad you wrote this,
    RR

We decided to have two small potatoes each with our salad last night. I only ate half of one. Seem to have gone off them.

    Not complaining.

Looks like your weening yourself off simple carbs!!

Yes, indeed, Bigbooty. Last chance to weigh before our American month. Sadly I did not make the 9st, but very happy with where I am, having lost 15lbs, as well as two inches from my waist.

    What is “American month”?
    RR

RR, we are in America for a month: a tour first, then 17 days at my son’s place helping with grandsons.

Didn’t gain on the tour, thankfully. Have now lost another 1 and 1/2 lbs, putting me into 9st! 138.8lbs this morning!

Sticking to two meals a day, with two real fasts. Our son enjoyed the couscous and tofu. Just having a wine when we eat out.

So glad you got to visit! Wow, it’s so hard to keep my weight stable when traveling. Sounds like you had a plan and stuck to it.
    RR

Hi! I can totally understand your husbands stance. I’m sure after all the travelling he does for his work and eating all the bland food that he can get his hands on, some fresh home made cooked food can be refreshing to anyone. I took my weight loss journey with my brother. Obesity runs in our family, because let’s face it, no one else does! LOL.
So anyway yeah, getting someone along and managing to convince them to come aboard your weight loss journey can be quite a daunting task. But I’d suggest you talk to your husband about this seriously. Here’s an article that you can refer to on ways to encourage your husband: http://www.harveybrooker.com/3-ways-to-encourage-a-friend-on-his-weight-loss-journey/ .Let him know that his health is more important to you than anything else. Here’s a He can cook good tasty and healthy food too! There’s a lot of literature available online on healthy recipes!

Thanks, RR. I’m a happy size 12 now, size 8 in the USA. I’d just like to tighten my flappy tummy. Difficult post-hysterectomy.

At home I usually have a lime and soda in a pub. Nothing like that seems to be available in the States. I dare not have Diet Coke, constipation has been a problem on this 5:2.

137.4 lbs today! My husband hasn’t weighed but he seems to have lost what he put on while we were travelling.

    How are you doing, Susan?

I’ve been tempted to buy new jeans in the USA, but the exchange rate is do bad this time that I’ll wait for a Debenhams sale at home.
