  • The beginning of something exciting I hope – Day 1 with Fasting on Monday and Thursday. It would be great to have other kiwis out there to come along for the ride, I would love the support and its always great to know your are not alone. The posts I have been reading have been great, overwhelming (so much to read) but I figure just do one day at a time.

    Kia Ora!!
I’m new too but as I have been doing this for a few weeks now, so I can say it does get easier. All my fears of getting “hangry”, shaky, weak etc were dispelled in the first fast day. And my second fast day was also a gym day, and that was no big deal either. I hope the same is for you. I fast on sunday and thursday, so I’ll think of you tomorrow. Welcome to the beginning of a new adventure 🙂

    Good Morning!
I too am new to this, both the 5:2diet and an online forum. It is good to see another kiwi. First day yesterday and started with a fast day, wasn’t difficult, but probably easier because I’m on leave at the moment, may be a different story on Thursday when I will be back at work. However we will see. Am off to town to find a good calorie counter today, finding it a little strange to consider calorie values for veg after knowing about the freebies in the WWs programme. How did you get on with your first fast?

    Hi there,

Having heard of this from a colleague who in her words “had the frighteners put on by her GP” re type 2 diabetes I borrowed the book from her and found the science behind intermittent fasting to be very interesting from a “repair and recover” point of view. I started in earnest at the beginning of September looking to lose approx. 5 kg but more importantly to see off high blood pressure which seems to run in my family. I have lurked on the forums since but am keen to join the fellow kiwi fasters here 🙂 I have been fasting Mon and Thurs each week and thinking of trying B2B (Mon and Tues) next week.

Good evening, you are brave with your B2B, think I would be thinking about chewing my arm off! I find that Mondays and Thursday are easy enough, be two days together seems to be a big stretch. However to date I have managed to shed 2.2kgs and it doesn’t feel hard, its interesting the way I tend to really think about what I’m eating on my non-fast days, do I need rather than want, and if I want then how badly. 8 kgs to go.

    Hi Ms GJ

I actually found the B2B fasts last week easier than I had expected (I have read of others referring to letting the Hunger genie out of the bottle as late as possible on a fast day and perhaps there is a bit of that for me with the B2B method). I was not going to fast today, being a holiday (easier at work I seem to find as a rule) but low and behold my body seemed to be ready so here I am and will fast again tomorrow. I do like having it done and dusted for the week but don’t think I could have done back to back when i first started this, it seems to be a work in progress. happy fasting to any of you doing it today 🙂

    Hello
I am an expat kiwi soon to be a repatriated one! Happy Happy!
I am on alternate day fasting, though on FD holiday at present until I get back. I have been on ADF since July and lost 12 kilos.
Purplegrass, I like your hunger genie image. I try to eat as late as possible too and fill up on green tea and fizzy water.
On fast days, I try to exercise, so my net calorie intake is zero. On other threads I am on they reckon fast day exercise is very important. And as you say, AuntyMelinda, you don’t feel shaky. The only time I sometimes feel a bit on the low energy side is on an eating day before my first break fast meal at midday. I try to respect the 16:8 intermittent fasting even on food days, so I eat 3 meals in two days. It was tough at first, but a breeze now.
I have 18 more kilos to lose. I hope to be as slim as when I was 25 by the end of the summer.
I have to say that since I started this ADF, I have fewer aches and pains and feel wonderful.

    Hi Tangatawiwi

I suspect that ADF takes a great amount of discipline, well done you 🙂 I also adhere to the 16:8 method on non fasts days and exercise at the gym Mon – Friday first thing in the morning so fasted for each workout. In the beginning I found I felt a little under fuelled on occasion (especially the morning after a single fast day) but I think part of it may have been the mind complaining rather than the body. Have now adjusted and do not find it a problem. Actually look forward to a fast day more often than not now. happy fasting to any who are lunching on “fresh air pies” today 🙂

    Hi Purple Grass71,
Love your “fresh air pies”, not a fasting day but was preparing to be crabby until I read that, made me laugh, and I don’t feel quite so bad because my paper hasn’t been delivered and I couldn’t get any sense from the person I struck at the call centre. Will definitely remember it on Thursday.

    Hi Ms GJ
I am happy to have been able to lighten the mood, do feel free to adopt the term 🙂 I hear you re call centres for paper deliveries!! Have a super day 🙂

Good Morning to all fasting on this cool and grey Monday, I suspect I will spend some of it browsing in here to distract me, it always seems harder going when the weather is colder I find 🙂

    Hi there NZ Team!
I’m interested to hear from thoe who have tried water-only days versus controlled calorie days – how do you manage the hunger (or my occassional ‘hangry episodes’ as my hubby likes to call it!)? Simple science would indicate you are more likely to lose more weight if on water only… any thoughts and opinions welcome!
Currently my fast days involve a midday pre-biotic shake (banana, blueberry, spinach, ACV, almond milk and rice protein powder), then 2 eggs or a different portion of protein with a heap of green salad to keep it at approx 500 cal.
Cheers and have a great week ahead 🙂

    Hi Koral

Although I am not doing water only for the full fast, what I am doing currently is this : Finish eating Sunday night 8pm (or earlier), nothing but water (or green tea) until approx. 6pm Monday – dinner of up to 500 cal (often about 350), repeat on Tuesday (having been doing 5:2 since beginning of Sept I am now finding that I prefer B2B fasts) then breaking fast after 12 noon Wednesday (again water only while fasting)
These days I am less bothered by hunger than when first starting out, and definitely find that hunger passes with distraction – this forum is great for that, as is a brisk walk on a nice afternoon.

    Happy Tuesday all 🙂

    Hi,

Another newbie! Starting today with the aim of Monday and Thursday being my fasting days. Any tips would be appreciated as new to all this 🙂
Expat Scot living in Auckland 🙂

Hi there from Christchurch everyone. I did 5:2 Dec/Jan of this year and lost heaps of weight but ended up with gall stones – I’m now trying it again (without a gall bladder) and will fast on Sundays and Wednesdays. Good luck everyone 🙂

Good afternoon everyone from a hot, sunny, very windy Marlborough. Hope you are all doing well. After 5 weeks (Ithink) and 4kgs down I have found this gets easier as I go, I find that I feel less hungry on fast days than non. What is more eating carefully on the non fast days gets to be less of a hassle, because it makes no sense to be sensible on 2 days and blow it on the others by pigging out. I don’t calorie count, just try to be mindful about what and how much I shove in my mouth. Still manage to fit in the odd biscuit and piece of chocolate. Being busy at work is probably helping 50 hour weeks don’t leave time to be thoughtless about anything, and I actually have the energy to be organised, all the Christmas cakes made and a good start on the pressies, hopefully by tomorrow night there will only be one left to buy. Hope you all have a wonderful week.
