  • Hi! I too am just starting today! I live in Iowa, USA. I hope we are successful!!! 🙂

Good to hear from you Wackypad 🙂 i remember the days a few years ago when i could eat like a horse and never gain a lb, oh the joys of being a youngster!
I am currently being tested for thyroid problems – overactive though – which is a little baffling as one of the symptoms is unexpected weight loss (definitely not had any of that haha!) Seeing the specialist tomorrow so my weight gain will be a question i shall be asking.
Wackypad what are your plans this week FD wise? 🙂

Beth, welcome to the thread you’ll get lots of support here! Good luck! X

Hello Beth – welcome and best of luck, Abs, I am planning on FDs Mon Wed and hopefully Friday this week but definitely Mon and Wed and see what happens – first week was fine but last week I broke the fast Friday evening and didn’t get a chance to get another FD in. No weight loss so that is giving me motivation to try and get 3 in this week and also more exercise. Did an hour of Jane Fonda yesterday and tried to jog round the block today – OMG it killed me – will try to persuade my husband to get us an exercise bike I think jogging is not my thing. Took my 9 year old with me and he kept running to the corner and back to me again as I was so slow ha ha!! What are your plans FD wise this week and how much exercise do you plan?

    Cheers folk
The wonderful thing about 5:2 is the flexibility. This woe is capable of being tweeked to suit the individual lifestyle, food tastes and needs.
Having said that, the bottom line will always be….calories in, calories out.
If you are consuming the same number as you use, you stay stable. If you consume less than you use (ie have a deficit) you lose weight. If you consume more than you need, it is stored as fat. Simple.

Create a deficit and you will lose weight. Do this by changing your approach to food (like wackyad’s experience as a young woman) and you will do it.
    All the best, PVE 🙂

Haha did he really!! I’m not much faster to be honest! 🙂 I’m fasting today (mon) weds and probably saturday this week as they’re the days I am most busiest. Will you be doing water only again?
I think exercise wise I’m definitely going to try and get a few runs in (i cycle 2miles to get to the park too) and maybe some shred dvds as I’ve got a kettlebell now. I’m feeling motivated exercise wise i seem to be quite enjoying it lately haha! Good luck today keep me posted x

For the past 4 weeks I have lost 2lbs each week. But as you know this week I had a very naughty kebab and chips, plus mucho vino on each of my non fast days. So I weighed in this morning …. and….. I have lost another 3lbs, yes three whole pounds! I am under 10 stone for the first time in living memory, well about 20 years. I am over the moon!

Fasting today, it’s a 350 calorie day. Liquid only fast tomorrow, then another 350 fast on Thursday or Friday. This is what works for me.

Loving, yes absolutely loving, this new way of life.

Well done applepie I weighed in today and have lost 1 lb. Really pleased as I have not been able to exercise with sore leg. Have lost eleven pounds since January so am really starting to look better now. I have still lots to go but am determined to get there. If I carry on losing 1 lb per week by my birthday in august will be 10 stone! Good luck to everyone for this week.

    Well done applepie! 🙂

Abs, what weight kettlebell do you use? Am interested in trying that out – I do some of the Gillian dvds but havent tried the shred it with weights one yet. I usually use two 2kgs dumbells for her other workouts. I am doing drinks only fast today and Wed and then will see how I feel – will also be trying alternate day exercising this week which means today, wed and fri. I have the weeks until Easter on my monthly planner on my desk now – 1 or 2 pounds a week until then would be fab as we are going away for easter and I would love to feel confident in the pool – good incentive to see it in black and white!

Im sure you will smash that! 🙂 are you going anywhere nice?
I use a 6kg kettlebell! Probably should have gone for a lower one as i am a beginner but because they were quite expensive i didnt want to get a low one and then outgrow it if you see what i mean?! Ive been for a little run and cycle and just done a shred so feeling quite good now! What exercise did you go for?? So far ive managed water only (with a cheeky hot chocolate!). Hows your day been?

Thanks Abs – heres hoping! Will get the kettlebell – that sounds good. Did the 30 day shred today – only level 1 but I still feel it. And still a bit achy from my fast walk/jog around the block yesterday and I did Jane Fonda on Saturday which is always fun!! I have just shared a covent garden soup with my husband – wasn’t planning on it but smelt too good – lentil and bacon and it was only 170 odd calories so I feel ok. Struggled with hunger a bit today but watched a good little film that kept me motivated – Cinderella Pact – its not amazing or anything but I recommend it to while away some time and keep you motivated- it has Poppy Montgomery and I have just been watching Unforgettable which I love and Amazon recommended it to me. Anyway glad you mentioned the hot choc – I bought a few options sachets last week and forgot about them – the trouble with eating something savoury is that I always fancy something sweet after – that will do the trick!! Keep it up and I will check in again Wed 🙂

Nearly 8 o’clock and managed with just about 100 calories from a hot chocolate and a cup of coffee.

Think I’ll have a little something. I’ve got some a stuffed pepper at 158 calories or maybe some banana on toast (comfort food) and a nice cup of tea.

Note to self – need to drink more water on a fast day!!!!!!

Oh dear, I skipped week 2 last week…stuff got in the way! Week 3 hopefully will be better!

I love reading everyone’s info and how they are getting along with the 5:2 – inspiring! Thks!

    Hallo!

Did this last year and had some good results, but my will power caved and I ended up pushing fast days back and back until there were no more days left in the week to fast…

Anyway, after going on an unexplained rampage since January where I’ve been eating everything in sight (total sucker for carbs and chocolate) I figured it was time to give it a go again, so starting again tomorrow…

My colleague has been doing this for 2.5 years and he’s never looked better. He eats what he likes on non fast days and is able to resist the temptation of the (evil and delicious) communal biccie rounds when he’s fasting.

Not planning to calorie count on NFD but will be more mindful not to eat all the cake.

    Wish me luck! 😀

Skipping rope arrived and hoola hoop ordered – trying different exercises

    Good luck JennieJenJen

    🙂

Thanks cakey, will post how I get on tomorrow!

    hi all
well, I’ve plucked up the courage to actually do it and not just read the book 🙂 ….you know when you have that niggling voice that tells you it won’t somehow work for you….. well I’m fed up of that and time to kick some butt as my son would say , or in my case – kick some flab! 🙂

I’ve got about 4 stone in total to lose, bit shocked and quite upset when I actually weighed myself!! so tomorrow is my first fast day of the week. onwards and downwards with the scales!

do you guys weigh yourself after your fast day or just once a week? what do you find best?

thanks for putting this thread here – it doesn’t feel quite so lonely !! x

    Welcome MeggieMae too.

Don’t feel lonely, we all use these forums to post about our ups and downs along the way.

I aim to weigh myself once a week but I can never wait that long 🙂

First day was yesterday – I had 0% fat yoghurt with blueberries for breakfast, then soup, one cracker, a boiled egg and broccoli for dinner. And lots of coffee/fizzy water!

I had a few foggy moments where I felt a bit funny but overall it was easy! Having done this before I am really aware that sadly it’s not always that straight forward 🙂 When I was hungry I dreamed about the breakfast I was going to have…in my head I imagined pancakes with lemon and sugar…but when I woke up this morning I wasn’t that hungry.

My colleague just told me that the 5:2 is only good for maintaining weight loss…it’s funny that even though that comment is ill informed it can make you feel like there’s a chance the ongoing effort may not be worth it! Silly, eh?!

How’s everyone else getting on? 🙂

hi jennie. Not only is your colleague ill-informed, their comment doesn’t even make sense. There are thousands of people who are using it to commence weight loss and when they have reached their target, to then maintain that target weight.

I had a health check at my doctors yesterday and she told me my cholesterol and blood pressure were really good for my age. They last weighed me there in 1997 when I was 90 kgs with a BMI of 30.9 and borderline blood pressure medication. Last night I weighed 75 kgs with a BMI of 25.6 at 52 years of age. 5:2 started it and keeps going. 🙂

Cool Jennienennen! Much the same as my diet on fast days, I’m lucky that I love fruit and green teas so I have plenty of those all day long. I hsve been weighing myself in the morning after each fast day, 1lb lost each time! Hsve you weighed yourself since fasting? Peely Weely it’s good to read your figures, as my blood pressure is a little higher than it should be and my doctor gave her blessing on me doing the 5:2 so I am keen for good results there as well as lower BP.. … Ps just had fish and chips in the pub ….. !

Hello everyone! Its been very quiet on here this last week, just wondering how everyones getting on??

Happy to report after two weeks with no loss I’ve seen some movement in the scales again – finally! – which puts me at about -9lbs in 4 weeks. I did 3 x water on fasts this week which i found much easier as i was nice and busy so just kind of breezed through them without a 2nd thought really.

Let me know how you’re all doing! 🙂

@ab: I’ve been readying the posts more than writing lately.
After 4 weeks I lost 2.8 kg/6lbs and feel great.
Funny enough if I eat too much at once nowadays I get stomach pain. 🙂

Just completed week 2 day 1 of couch to 5k, phew! I’ve signed myself up to do a run at the end of May, something to aim for!

Doing week 3 day 1 of 5:2 today as well. I was okay last week and then pmt hit and I needed chocolate! Only lost 2lbs since starting, but I’m happy with that, better than nothing!

Congrats to everyone else for keeping going!

Hey Slinkylinky, you’re doing well – 1lb each fast!! I didn’t weigh myself when I started, but successfully completed the 2nd fast of week 1 yesterday! I did it on a Sat as was busy the rest of the week, so you can imagine how exciting my weekend was…first time in a while I’ve sat in front of the TV drinking herbal tea and savoring a tomato soup…Think I’ll go to the gym tonight and get an “official” weight/fat reading!

Tomorrow is fast number 3…might do another fast this week if I can to get things going…

Really hope this WOE shifts this weight for me in time for summer!

Absteroo 9lbs you’re doing really well!

Hi -I think I’m on week 4? Going ok- I think I should prob be doing better -have lost 4.5 llbs-!not sure if that is on track with what we should be losing? On a fast day today but havingn a stressful day and the house is full of cake from my sons birthday party last weekend and I am so tempted just to gorge-argh!!

Ipps – put that cake away!! Cut off a piece for yourself for tomorrow first, though!

Well done everyone, sounds like everyone’s doing fab! What days are you all fasting this week? I’m doing a back to back today & tomorrow, and possibly one more later in the week if i can fit it in.

Anne0411 well done on the c25k, how are you finding it? I’m doing my first 5k in 2 weeks time! Very nervous! I struggle alot so I’ll be so pleased just to make it all the way around!

    Hi
I actually started today! My confusion is around the times of eating.
My last meal was las night at 7pm.
I had a breakfast around 200 calories at 8 am and planning dinner of 300 at 6pm.
    Is this timing right?

    Hi healthcoachB

Im sure someone will correct me if i am wrong but i thought that a period of fast needed to be at least 16hours? Although i have read on other posts that its 12 hours. If that’s the case then your 7pm – 8am fast would be fine.

I always try to have a period of fast of anywhere between 16hours-36hours though! 🙂 hope i have made sense!

    Hi all,

Going into my fourth week of fasting, and feeling a bit disheartened.
Did great the first two weeks – but last week I had two day training with a colleague, outside of the office, and was unable complete my fast day (been doing 3). I only managed to do one last week.
And then got a cold this weekend, and had to stay home from work today – and ended up totally screwing up my fast day (eating upwards of 2000 calories! womp womp). Worst part was managed to fast all day, but then just gorged on ALL THE NUTS AND SWEET THINGS come dinner time. OY. Anywayyyysss….

Trying to regain the momentum, but really doubting my self control, and feeling disappointed in myself.

All that being said, I lost another pound again last week, which is a total of 4 pounds in 3 weeks of fasting. However, I am sure I gained back a pound from all the inactivity to my cold and the overeating. :/

Sorry for the epic novel! Thanks for reading.
And thanks for the continued updates! Great to hear about everyones experiences (both positive and negative).

    Wishing everyone a great week!

    To all
I am amazided with the level of support here! The best of it is just venting out what is working and not, the good spirits, optimism and the humor.
Today was my first day. It’s was not easy and I really want to be focus for my next day which the plan is Friday. I will have a glass of warm almond milk (30 cal) with a pill before I go to bed. I am still hungry.
I don’t want to make this a short term goal! I get excited, lose motivation and here I am a yoyo specialist which in the long run might be not so healthy.
I will try to be active with this thread.

    Hi fayfayfay!
don’t beat yourself up too much you sound like you’re doing brilliant! The good thing about fasting is if you screw up one day you can always try again another day 🙂 trust me when i did this in the summer i lost count of the days i had fastest alllll day then end up eating (binging) a whole days worth of cals in a few hours! I know its disheartening but persevere and all it will take it 1 good fast day to motivate you back on track 🙂
Healthcoach you’ll be very supported on this thread! Keep us posted with regular updates on how you’re doing! 🙂

Welcome HealthCoachB! You got this! 🙂

And thanks Absteroo – your post (and all of the accompanying smiley emoticons) made me feel a lot better. Trying to be kind to myself, and know that I can carry on with my week as planned – and just do my third fast day on saturday (since I screwed up yesterday so badly – calculated on my fitnesspal – 2500 cals! yikes). Today I have a horrible stomach ache…but still managed to eat more sweet things. Will start fresh tomorrow (fasting wed, fri, and sat). It was really helpful to hear that someone else struggles with that same pattern. So frustrating! Hope you have a great week! 🙂 🙂

I have discovered Options hot chocs…life savers!!

To anyone with crazy cravings for chocolate on their fast days, I implore you…keep a few of these on you and you’ll be sorted… I put a tiny splash of almond milk in mine too. Only 50 cals worth all in all!

Good luck with your fast days Fayfayfay…mine’s tomorrow. Need to prep, only have high cal stuff in the house – dangerous!!

Hey ABSTEROO wow 5k in 2 weeks good for your! I’ve created my own running music with good boppy music and a couple of m people’s ‘proud’ is one of them reminds me to keep going. I might sign up for a mini triathlon at the end of May. We’ll see, it’s getting into a wetsuit – aaaahhhhh!!

Good luck Linda! I have started today too.

Anne – wow a triathlon?! Thats awesome! I’d love to try that. I’m so excited i ran 5k without stopping for the first time last night! It was at complete snails pace (more like power walking speed!) but a few months ago i couldnt even run for 1min so I’m chuffed!
FD for me today! Last one of the week ☺

First fast day (again) today and am going to try the 4:3 for the first month or so. I went to the doctors because of hip and knee pain while out walking and he says it’s the onset of arthritis brought on by being too heavy (21st) and my joints can’t cope with it. Need to lose about 9st which my take a while. Felt a bit of hunger this morning but it’s gone now, may have a tin of grapefruit segments (32 cals) later if it comes back.

FatGraham don’t worry about it taking a while. One week at a time. If you stick with it, it gets easier and a little at a time will come off. I am almost done with my 5th week and have lost 8 pounds (3.6 kg) and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) off my waist. I still have about 20 more pounds to lose, but am taking it one week at a time. If your joints/hips are bothering you, use hand weights and just work your arms until you get to a weight where your hips don’t hurt any more. You could also do a stationary bike or something. Just keep moving forward. you can do it.

    hi Anne 4001
How’s it going? Good luck anyway. I really hope you are making good progress. I just started today – same starting weight as you! Best wishes,

Hello, like everyone else have read book in one sitting and am ready to go tomorrow. Trouble is I’m terrified of it. I really want to do this, I’m fat and middle aged and can only influence one of those things. Did anyone else feel scared the first time they fasted?

Well, now ending week 2 and I am down a total of 3.6 lbs. This is really working! I love reading everyone’s posts! Very encouraging. I am very glad I found this diet/site! So far, so good!

    Where is everyone?

i was thinking the same! how are you getting on?
I’ve been struggling lately as I am on nights which play havoc with my appetite and cravings. just trying to work out what fast days i can squeeze in this week!

Hello Posters, sorry not been on for a while, life has been hectic but also I had a really good loss my first week and then two weeks with no loss even though I was sticking to my fast days so I got a bit down and didn’t want to put anyone else off. However I have stuck with it and am just over a month in now – I started 16 Feb I think (I remember eating a box of milk tray the day before I started so that must have been Valentines weekend…) Well in total I have lost 7 pounds in that time so probably around a pound a week average but it was actually 4 pounds in a week then nothing for two weeks and 3 pounds in 3 weeks. I am finding my fast days (Mon and Thurs) fairly ok – may go a little bit over sometimes but I am starting to go a bit ott on the day before a fast as I have food on the brain I think – lots of mindless eating which I hate myself for but cant seem to stop. 2 weeks to my weekend away to center parcs so would love to shift a bit more by then. How is everyone doing?

    Hi all,

Like WackyPad, I too have been swept up in the hectic rush of life. And have not been fasting. Feeling a bit disappointed in myself.Every day that I set the intention of fasting I end up eating a shit load of calories at the end of the day. It seems to be a pattern now (that I REALLY want to break).
Was really enjoying the few weeks that I got a good fasting groove going.
Ate late last night, so doing a 9-9 fast day today. PLEASE cross your fingers I can make it through. I know it only takes one good fast day to start to appreciate the benefits/build some momentum.

    How is everyone else doing??

PS. good on you Wackypad! Feeling discourages, but still continuing on. I admire that determination!!! 7 pounds is a lot! 🙂

Im in a bit of a muddle with all of this, does it matter how long you fast or your overall calorie intake. So I do a long fast from 9pm till 12 the following day but find I need a snack mid afternoon then have a small meal at 6.30. When I fast till 7 am the following day. Am I doing it right? I think I lost a pound week one, am into week two now.

    Hi Lornajane and welcome:

This thread will answer most of your questions: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

Time between meals is not important for weight loss, it is the number of calories eaten (or not eaten) that is.

    Good Luck!
