  • A bit about me first……

I’m 27. (28 this weekend), mum of 2 beautiful girls and living with my kids and husband in Malta. No family here as they are all in the Uk. My weight has fluctuated over the last 8 years, my heaviest being 14.5stone. I dropped to 11.5 stone and then fell pregnant, had baby#1 and lost the weight, stopping at 11.5 stone again. Fell pregnant and had baby#2, again losing the weight and stopping at 11.5 stone. Since that, my weight has fluctuated. I now weigh in Kg too.

So for the last 2 years I’ve went between 72.5-75.5kg. Finally said enough is enough. I’ve tried it all, Atkins, detoxing, juicing, 2 week plans, etc etc. Nothing ever seems to work for me. Probably because it’s all too restrictive.

I started my 5:2 on Monday with my fasting days this week set at Monday and Thursday. So far, I’ve lost 3kg!! Today is fast day #2. I got on well with fast day #1 and the last 2 days I’ve calorie counted, been more aware of what I’m putting in my body and even had chocolate!

I have my best friends wedding in 5 weeks. I’m hoping to be below 70kg for this (so a total of 6kg loss….). Any more than that is an added bonus! I’m doing small goals as they seem more achievable but I know my ultimate goal is to get to about 55kg.

Tell me your goals and how close you are to achieving them?

Hi Jennifer! Great start, well done! My goal is to lose 9 kilos. I am 36, working mother of two boys (aged 7 and 5.) My BMI was creeping up to 28 before I started 5:2 and I needed to take some serious action. I’ll be happy if I can get it to 24. I’m in week three of 5:2 and have lost 2 kilos so far. I have a wedding coming up on 2nd July and I know I won’t have reached my overall goal by then so I am aiming for 5 kilos by then. I am enjoying it so far and I have been able to eat well at home on fast days and cope quite well with them because I am working from home at the moment. Yesterday was my first fast day with the kids and OH around (it’s school holidays in Bavaria, Germany, where we live). It was fine. I had to keep myself busy while they had lunch, but they picked something up from the local food van so I didn’t have to be involved in preparing anything. Anyway, good luck to you! What are your plans for today’s fast day? Cheers 🙂

Well done and good luck for future weight loss.

So far I’ve kept myself busy today by cleaning the bathrooms. My 2 year old just woke from a nap and I had to make her lunch before we pick up the 4 year old from Kinder. I plan to eat at about 5pm with the kids but I’ve pre-prepared my meal. I have skinny spagbog (from the book) with courgette followed by sugar free jelly. I’ve had a coffee, and I’m planning another hot drink when I get home from pick up.

My BMI was pushing 32 (I’m only 5ft1) so I really need to get it down. Just losing 3kg has dropped it to a BMI of 28. Slow and steady wins the race.

What are you having to eat on fast days? Are you having 1/2 meals?

Hi Jennifer, I’ve been having 1 meal, around 5pm on fast days (around the time the kids eat). Usually I have 100 cals still to play with in the evening and I have a snack. Sounds like you’re on course for a good fast day today. Do you also drink water? I couldn’t believe how much more water I drank on fast days, but it really helps. Also in Dr Varady’s book she talks about the benefit of drinking water for weight loss. So on my non-fast days I try to drink a big glass of water half an hour before I eat. She quoted a study that said people who were instructed to drink a lot of water and specifically a glass 30/15 mins before a meal lost 87% more weight than those who were not told anything about water. I’ve discovered a variation of the courgette spagbol that I love! Chop up bacon, up to 75 cals worth and gorgonzola, brie, any cheese, up to 75 cals worth. A small amount of chopped onion, red pepper and courgettes prepared as if for spag bol. Get the bacon in the pan and add the onions, add a bit of water to get it going as the bacon fat won’t be enough. Then add the courgettes and red peppers and more water (with chicken or veg stock if you like) and black pepper and dried herbs. Let it all cook up and add a little bit of fat free nat yog if you like and at the end put the slices of cheese over til they melt. Then serve. It’s delicious and this version is probs about 230 cals. It’s so quick too. I discovered this even before I started fasting and love how low calorie it is if you’re careful about the cheese and bacon. Anyway, sorry, you didn’t ask for recipes… I just love food a bit too much 🙂 I’m only 5ft so I know how quickly one’s BMI can go up… Here’s hoping to our successful 5:2 results and, importantly, maintenance!!! 🙂

Hi all and well done on your weight-losses so far. I am 49, turning 50 in September. Married with three grown children and working full-time. I am 5 ft 4 and weigh in at 76.9 kilos (!!) I need to lose 15 kilos to have a normal BMI and a body that could fit into all the clothes I have in my wardrobe – not bought 10 years ago, but maximum three! Yep, I gained all that weight so quickly- still trying to figure out how.

So now here I am counting calories and taking notes. I am excited to be here – have never fasted before (today is my first fasting day). I have had two coffees, some nuts, 0,5l bouillon with two crisp-breads and shall eat low-calorie tonight. My allowance on fast days is 475 kcals and on non-fast days 1’900 kcals.

I am aiming for following weigh-ins:
23.7. // 72.5 kilos (trip to UK for a wedding)
3.9. // 69.4 kilos (my 50th birthday trip – would be awesome to be under 70 kilos!!)
    2.1.17 // 61,9 kilos – my ultimate goal is 62.0.

These data would mean 0.5 kilos weight-loss per week – hope it is realistic – it’s what is keeping me motivated.

Well done Fabulous@50! Good luck for your first fast day! I know how quickly weight can creep on. Most of what I need to shift came on in the last few months! But compared to last time I was this heavy, it seems to have gone in different places. I think it is hanging out in my thighs and bum, but I also have a belly/ muffin top thing going on. I think your goals sound realistic. In the first week you will probably drop 2-3 kilos, but as the experts say, it’s just water and adjustment, it’s very unlikely you can lose that every week. I think 0.5 kilos per week is realistic as an average, it is also what my targets are based on more or less. How did you work out your exact calorie allowance? Is there an online tool? I using the average of 500 and on non-fast days trying to stick to 1500-1800, sometimes sabotaged with treats and/or wine. Have you measured your waist etc? I measured my waist and should really do my thighs before I carry on any more. I think it’s good to see results through measurements especially when weight loss might slow down or stall for a week or two. Well, good luck! I am sure you are going to look fabulous for your birthday in September! Cheers 🙂

Hi Frau B (you in Germany? I am in Switzerland, near Lucerne…) – No, I haven’t measured anything yet 😉

On this page you can work out your exact calorie intake:
https://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/ – enter what is required and then look at your TDEE, this divided by four (a quarter of your TDEE) will give you the exact calories for the fast days 🙂

Thank-you for your wishes – really hope I can stay this motivated!!! I shall do the measurements this evening and fill in on my tracker.

PS love that recipe of SpagBog

Hi Fabulous@50, yes, I am in Munich! Small-ish world! Another benefit of 5:2, if you’re based in Switzerland, is making big savings on the food shopping bill, as I’ve heard food in Switzerland is really expensive?!? Thanks for the link to the TDEE calculator, I’m going to look at that. Let me know if you try the courgette pasta with bacon and cheese- i totally love it! Cheers 🙂

Thanks for that recipe frauB! I’ll give that a go. Recipes always welcome!

Well done and good luck Fabulous@50! You can do it! Very realistic goal too.

I use MyFitnessPal on non-fast days and they have given me a daily calorie budget of 1200. I’m finding it surprisingly easy to stick to this amount so far. Ive had another cup of tea today. I’m happy with my weight loss this week but I expect I will gain over the weekend due to cocktails and cake for my birthday 😉 this I don’t mind though as I’m likely to watch what I’m doing so I don’t undo all my hard work.

I have done my measurements but I’m only doing them every fortnight so I actually see a difference and don’t get too disheartened, which I know I would if I measured weekly.

Oh, I’ve also been drinking about 3-3.5L of water on fast days. I tend to drink 2L of water or more on “normal” days.

HI Jennifer, yes, good idea re measuring every fortnight. I finally got round to measuring my thighs for a kick-off measurement and it seems my right thing is 2 cm bigger than my left! I’m guessing that must be pretty normal. Enjoy your birthday weekend! Cocktails and cake sounds amazing! 🙂
