  • Hi all!

My dearest friend has been doing the 5:2 for months now and she looks (and feels) amazing. I’ve been thinking about doing it too, and after seeing videos of my backside (and the rest of me, but I only saw the rear) playing with the niece and nephew yesterday, I’ve decided to bite the bullet.

I’ve just had my first day of limiting my calories. I’ve had 540 calories plus a small bowl of home-made vegetable soup that I have no idea of the calorific content, but it wasn’t much. Mainly celery, courgette, half a carrot, onion, green beans. Only the carrot had much in the way of GI.

How did I feel? Well hungry and a bit spacy through the day, but after my main meal in the evening, I felt fine. I think I can do this…

Should I have my protein in the evenings or at lunchtime?

    Hi and welcome:

Although you can eat what and when you want on diet days, many people learn that it is best for them to eat one meal in the evening that consists of mostly fat and protein.

Here are some tips for those just starting: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/

    Good Luck!

i try cottage cheese and that has helped my hunger pangs tremendously- i just completed my first day also

Hi RedSquirrel + Todd0248! I just did my first day as well!

I definitely had that spacey feeling towards afternoon!! I was in a meeting and could only think about my can of tuna, lol 🙂

I ended up doing a can of tuna with lemon + pepper at 4 PM (was really feeling out of it) and then 3 cups of kale with a fried egg cooked in olive oil at 6:30. I finished out the day with a small soy latte from Starbucks… I think I totaled 565 for the day, which I’m fine with, as I believe as I continue I’ll more easily settle into 500.

Are you both doing this primarily for weight loss? I just read a nice thread about how to stay on this indefinitely, it’s good to plug into the further health benefits (although I’m not well versed in them yet).

I don’t know–I’m excited, but a little nervous, because anytime I end up paying a lot of attention to my food counts, I end up becoming angry and rebellious at society (YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO EAT, WORLD!, etc)

Good on both of you for starting! I’d be interested to know your progress 🙂

    Hi everyone
my first day was yesterday. Although I was slightly dreading it, I didn’t find it too hard, maybe buoyed along by excitement – let’s see how I am on week eight 🙂

I had a cup of coffee first thing, then nothing until lunch when I had a small portion of tuna, some grated carrot dressed with lemon and loads of lettuce. I also drank gallons of water throughout the day and also had two cups of tea with sweetener and a little milk. For dinner I made a dish from Mimi’s article in the Daily Mail, huevos rancheros, which is spicy peppers and tomatoes plus two eggs on top, a total of 283 calories which was amazing for quite a lot of food! So, a total of 501 calories.

I did have a headache for quite a lot of the day, and I am hoping that will ease up over time. I woke up this morning with a dry mouth (despite all the water) but wasn’t ravenously hungry which is what I expected.

So, I survived!! Hope everyone is getting on well, looking forward to hearing your stories.

Thank you for all your replies. How fun that several of us started at the same time. It’s interesting, isn’t it?

Did the spacey feeling last for you?

    Hi RedSquirrel!

The spacey feeling DID go away–but not after tuna; oddly, it did after I did my egg and kale in olive oil (my thought is I needed healthy fats).

I’m also counting calories on my off days, which is kinda bumming me out (my body is used to feasting all the time, apparently, even though I thought my portions were okay… I guess that’s why I’m overweight now).

Anyhow–how’s your week going? I end to get a little depressed at the end of the day. Tomorrow is my next fast day; I want to at least do a solid week and evaluate how I feel before committing hardcore.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

It is good to get an idea of what you eat normally. As we age, we need less food than we are accustomed to.

You won’t always need to count calories. Soon you will learn what your body needs.

Thanks, Amy C.! It’s been bumming me out, ha.

Do you know why that is–oh–because we aren’t growing as much (why we need less calories).

Do you guys ever get the grumps from counting calories/watching what you eat? I just want to be excited about improving my health, but end up feeling lousy about my body often.

    Cheers!

Yes, it is unfair that we have to start eating less as we age. I appreciate food a whole lot more than I did when I could eat a lot of calories at a younger age.

You can have it as your goal to learn your body’s signals on when it is truly hungry and be so in tune with it that you don’t overeat. Counting calories for a bit is a way to get a handle on this skill. However, like not eating on a fast day, it can end, just not as soon as 24 hours.

My hope for myself is I will be able stop counting calories and simply be aware of what I need each day. It is a tiresome task.

    That really isn’t fair haha!

So this spacey feeling is still with me, and it’s Wednesday and my last (and first) fast day was Monday. I have an interview on Friday. Should I still fast tomorrow as planned, or should I leave this until next week. I really must have my wits about me for the interview.

    Tough call!

Why not just move your fast day to Saturday for this week? It just has to be two nonconsecutive days out of the week… I definitely get needing your head for work!

Do what feels best for your body. Minds are shaky/untrustworthy, ha, I find.

    Best of luck!

I want to try to keep my fast days to week days at the moment, because DH is home at the weekends and that makes it doubly difficult to fast when he’s around. I still have to cook for him.

I wonder whether the light-headedness is because of the fasting or something else?

I found that symptoms changed over time, so the spacey feeling may resolve itself. I would suggest trying chicken bouillon to be sure you are getting enough salt.

Hmm. I never thought of salt, only water, and I had plenty of that. There was salt in the vegetable bouillon I used in my soup, but none in my evening meal of the fast day. I don’t generally add salt to cooking. But I had plenty yesterday and today in my mackerel fillets. That’s a good point to bear in mind – thank you!

    Hi RedSquirrel
I did get quite headachey by the end of the day and woke up next day with a dry mouth. I think I need to drink more water, even though I thought I was drinking enough – could this be a possibility for you?

Hello! I too had my day one yesterday and was doing very well until I discovered my food “gateway drug”. More on that in a sec.

In the am, i had coffee, tea, water and then around lunch time i received a birthday fruit/chocolate bouquet. Thankfully i work in an office full of young folks who scarfed up all that i couldn’t eat. Temptation averted!

The trouble came when i thought i could have Sashimi at my sushi restaurant for my 600 calories. After a sunomono salad (cucumber, seaweed and rice vinegar) and 6 pieces of sashimi, i was still hungry and tempted by the belt going by with rolls and rolls. I had 1 California roll and realized i was at about 800 cals for the day.

Wondering the 600 calorie limit is too tempting for others and if i’d be better off going 100% broth, tea and water for the fast days?

    Hi and welcome:

Many people learn that one evening meal that is high fat/protein works best on diet days. Quite a few ‘water fast’, which means they eat no calories. The only restriction is 600 calories or less of whatever food you want to eat.

Here are some tips for those new to 5:2: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/

    Good Luck!

Thursday = fast day. Already dizzy (I ate early… maybe a mistake).

But now it’s killing time @ work until broccoli at home. Woo.

    Anyone else fasting today?

    K.C.
