  • At new world this week, $5.99 for size 16 chicken. Cook it up, throw on some spicy seasoning first, Then weigh out skinless / boneless meat and freeze Into 80-100 gram portions ( 100 cals) one chook will do 4 fasts at least, for $1.25 a portion of lovely home cooked chook.

Grab it and throw it in a salad, a stir fry or just eat it.

More flavour than just 100 grams breast Meat fried up and I recon cheaper at this price.

Isn’t the weight of the meat suppose to be before the cooking process? This would make a difference to the fat contents as well as calories.
In the recipes the weight is always raw meat not cooked.

    Bite me!!!
80 grams of meat is nothing compared to those full plate cooked t bones!!!

If we were eating 400grams then fair enough….but I think give or take 3 cals we might be ok!!!
It’s a quick easy way to have some nice meat in the freezer. At leat this week, I haven’t seen size 16 ‘s under $9 for ages

It must be a south island special because up here on the Coromandel Peninsula we haven’t got that special. Ours is Ingham Chicken, Size 11 for $5.99, or a Pams Size 20 for $9.99 Quite a difference in the size but still good buying. I could probably make 7 or 8 meals out of a size 20!!

Hi I am north auckland and have been doing 5:2 for 3 weeks and down 3 kgs this morning yay! The fasting days are getting easier as i learn what foods i can eat, needing bigger breakfast then less during the day. My first fasting day i was so crabby and in bed quite early. It is great to have the 5 days of normal eating. Having thyroid problems gained weight to 100 kgs and it is so great to be in the 90s. I hope i can keep it up 🙂

Lorel I’m north of you, Whangarei.
….mmm, maybe it was only a size 11 then!?? Anyway I grabbed one and got 4 fast days ‘ at the ready’ out of it.
Maybe 11 ‘s are big north of Auckland 😉
Welcome Cindy that is excellent news!!

I’m in Wellington, likely to give this a go starting Thursday, though not sure if I’ll deal with it well. I think in my entire life (I’m in my 30s) I’ve skipped around three meals. A mate at work’s been doing it quite successfully for a few months.

Aiming to lose 5-10kg before March. I’ve tried all the diets, they all worked, but it creeps up over time. Atkins worked great, but now I’m vegetarian.

    Hi timnz,

Welcome to the forums. You should lose 5kg by March, maybe even 10 but diets only work as long as you’re dieting. Once you stop dieting, it all piles on again. The way to do it is to find how many daily calories you should be eating for a person of your age, gender and height. Eat roughly those calories on your non-fasting days and stick to the 600 calories for your fasting days. You can’t help but lose and when you’ve reached your goal weight, fast just 1 day a week to maintain your weight.

It’s a fallacy that you can eat what you like on non-fasting days. You can eat what you like as long as the calories don’t add up to more than your daily allowance. That means if you want to eat fish and chips or McDonalds, or drink 8 pints of beer, you’ll have to do without something else to compensate. But then you won’t be eating healthy food if you do that. You CAN have the occasional treat, but not every day.

Here’s a good Calorie Deficit Calculator. http://www.fitwatch.com/qkcalc/caloriedeficitcalculator.php Fill in your current weight, height and age and it’ll give you the number of daily calories you should be eating plus several other levels of calories depending on how you want to lose weight. The whole site is pretty good, actually. Have a look around and see how it can maybe help you achieve your goals

Thanks Lorel 🙂 I’m used to counting calories, I use my fitness pal. I can lose weight on 2000 a day if I exercise a bit, but I lose easier on 1600-1800 with exercise. That calculator agrees with my experience of what works for me. I occasionally splurge up to 2500 or even 3000 but that’s rare.

Because I have a goal and a target date (my wedding day) that’s pretty good motivation!

    Hi Kirsty
I am from New Plymouth in Taranaki, New Zealand.
anyone else from this part of the country?
Who might like to meet up, say once a month!

Hi Everyone and Happy New Year

Christmas has been quite good to me considering I’ve eaten like a horse but then I’ve kept up my hour a day walking and 10 minutes on the rebounder every day, so I’ve only gained a kilo over the holiday period.

How’s everyone else doing? If you’ve saved this page as a favourite or subscribed to it, do come back in and keep this NZ page going. It’d be a pity for it to fold after all the great giving and receiving of advice in the past.

Hi I am part of the Hamilton ‘shrinking violets’ team. Have lost 5 KGs since November. Love all the support on the forum.
Just went to Jeans West and got some great jeans–fab shape and they have in between sizes AND are so darn cheap. Feelin good!!!
And lucky us we have Dr Libby Weaver–her latest book Beauty From the Inside Out has a great explanation about how the digestive system works–AND easy way to get the fat rolling is to learn to breathe properly and deliberately–she explains why this burns fat—basically tummy breathing rather than shallow chest.
And Lorel she is great fan of the rebounder, I only let myself watch Bondi Vet is if I am rebounding !!!
Hope summer is treating you all well.

Double happy, I am from Hamilton too. Have been enjoying sometime over at Matarangi and back home on childminding duties.i love the name- shrinking violets. This thread has been a bit erratic so have been reading ladies of a certain age which seems to attract a larger audience. Anyway, it is great there is some interest here. I had a message on another thread from someone in Cambridge too. Keep right on bouncing 😀

    Hi Everyone
I too put on weight over Xmas. Had been around my goal weight for about 6 weeks and was enjoying the one day a week fast day. I have just decided I will have to do a 2 day to get that bit off. Hopefully just for a week will do it. My brother has lost over 20kg. He just send holiday snaps in his togs and looks fabulous. I can’t ever remember him being this slim and he’s over 60!

I’m doing quite well on this diet. I lost 2-3 kg over Christmas, fasting two days a week. I’m considering going down to every second day leading up to my wedding. I don’t really get that hungry on fast days any more, just the occasional pang, and the headaches have mostly stopped. I’m only a couple of months in and it’s pretty easy 🙂

Nika, who is in china but is coming To nz to study arrives this coming week.
I have arranged to meet her for lunch ( depending on her uni schedule) in Auckland Wednesday 26 th feb about 12.30 if anyone would like to join us?
I’m from Whangarei but am heading to the airport, so will stop by and say hi to her.

    All welcome.
Nearer the time will let you know where we will be, it will be up near the uni probably…or in queen street
But keep that day free if you want to join us

Great idea would love to come but will be working–I am in hamilton. Maybe we could organise a picnic in a weekend.

Did you start a group for Wellington? If so i would love to join it. I am starting the diet this week and meeting others who are doing it would be great.

Great to see so many Kiwis in the forum.
Although I live in England, I have enjoyed many summer months in Stratford.
I only joined this site a few days ago, after reading the book, now I am ready to start the 5:2 on Monday.
My biggest problem initially was finding out what meals to eat on fast days, but having read quite a lot of posts in the forum and found a few sites with recipes I am ready to get started.

I have not managed to get down to NZ for the last couple of years, so I really do miss it.
    Good luck to everyone.

Hi all, another Kiwi here. I’m from Wellington, have been using 5:2 since September 2013 and have lost 9 kg so at 168 cm am most happy with this. If any more falls of, a bonus. Also on it for the health benefits, so plan to continue forever! I have also, according to the scales, lost 25% of my body fat, so this must be good. I’m thrilled with the results, keep an eye on all the forum threads, and post to several.

Kiwiflyer, read all the tabs at the top of the page to get as much information as you can. I started having an omlette for breakfast, apple for lunch, salad for dinner, but now I don’t have anything before a boiled egg in a lettuce leaf for lunch, and have no problems. Plenty of water to help the hunger pangs, and lots of help and advice on the forums.

Hi I am from New Plymouth, New Zealand.
Your diet is the best I have ever come across, so so easy to use and such great health benefits from it.
My self and my neighbour have been using it for a while now, and we love it.
I have purchased your books, also have audio copy on my phone.
Thanks for this great weapon against weight.

Welcome Kiwiflyer79, Stratford is a fantastic historic place to be. Sadly I am not a Kiwi but just one word of advice while you are over here. If you are stuck for time or ideas for a fast day meal head for Marks and Spencer. They have some superb low cal meals that fit the bill for a fast day.
    Good luck.

    Thanks Couscous,
Yes, We are off to M&S today, someone in the forum said they do special low calorie sausages, also Waitrose do a lot of low cal meals.

Mind you, the veggies in New Zealand always seemed to stay fresher than ours in England.

Hopefully I can make another visit to Stratford NZ next year, also visit the fantastic fresh fish and Chip shop on the quay in New Plymouth.
While in Stratford I always stay at the Aero club, a fabulous place to be.

Barata, Your suggestion for breakfast is a good one to follow, and easy to do. Thanks

How are all of you who started in 2013 doing now? Did you lose weightt? If so did you keep it off? Would be good to hear from you if you are still logging in here.

Yes, lost 16 kg in 2014 Jan to November – then 6 weeks away in Europe – put 7 Kg on, which stayed over Christmas, now (3 weeks later) down 4Kgs, hoping to see another -3 Kg by Feb end. Was doing 3/4 B4 November (three days fasting) now back to 2/5 with 120 kg goal. Hope to see 115 kg by next Christmas. It’s a tough life!

    Hi all,
I’m Sara, from Auckland. I started this at the beginning of last year, but lost my way around July after receiving some bad news. Sadly I put on all the weight I’d lost (and then some), but now I’m back on track (well, I started again this week)! Thought it might be easier for me if I interact with others who are doing this as well (because I don’t know anyone in “real life” who is), so here I am!

    Hi Free Bird,
Good luck with your new start.
If you type in “New Zealand posts” at the top of page you will see lots of posts under different headings from Kiwis, many live in Auckland or nearby.
With a bit of luck you will come across someone near you that is also on 5:2 and you can buddy up with them.
Good luck with your new determination to succeed.

    Hi:

This is totally off topic, but it is one of my favorite videos. It is an airplane landing at the Queenstown airport. Beautiful and spectacular! http://www.chonday.com/Videos/pilotnewzdalnd1

To sort of keep it on topic a bit, here are some tips for those just starting 5:2: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

    Hi simcoeluv,
    Great video.

The scenery is one of the main reasons why I used to go to New Zealand every January and February.

Of course the scenery around Stratford and the North Island is not as Spectacular as the Southern Alps, but we can still fly over many areas of untouched natural bush.
For people who have never been to New Zealand, it has to be the best country in the world and Canada second.

Now on my second fasting week and find it easier than the first.

Hi everyone, I just started this 5+2 journey on Monday so am now into day 4.
I am from the Coromandel, this year have been too embarrassed to even go down onto the beach ( some well meaning person may drag me out to sea to reunite me with my pod!!).
I’m done with carrying this extra person around and have tried every diet on the planet I think. This 5+2 makes more sense to me as its more about how the body treats food. I detest the weighing and measuring of every morsel you put in your mouth which I’ve done on other programs.
I’ve had my two fast days and actually had then consecutively as we have visitors who arrived yesterday and I didn’t want to draw everyone’s attention to me being on yet another diet. Managed very well and am really pleased as it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be, although I did wake up yesterday with a headache but that’s par for the course when you start a new program anyway.
Well done to you all for your losses, to read about them is most inspiring.

Another Kiwi here – from the Mainland! Sunny Dunedin to be precise. My daughter and I are on this journey together, we are a couple of weeks in and today is our 4th fast day.

    Hello fellow kiwis

Waikato and looking forward to starting this 5:2 plan, hope it works cos nothing else has!

From your own experience if you have tried this already – has it worked for you?

Hi Wekalegs,Hilary4 and Coconutbunz, I stayed in Coromandel in a Back packers a few years ago, Great place, I think it was called Pink Pyjamas or some such name.
Also enjoyed Dunedin, especially the Chocolate factory and the Steep steep road (Must be a bummer in the snow)
I must have been to Waikato but cannot place it at the moment.

Good luck on your 5:2 diet.
As so many people are saying this is the real deal and easy to follow.
This is our 4th week and now becoming a habit: lost about 4 pounds so far so not as much as some, but a loss is a loss and looking forward to losing a few inches of the waist line.
So good luck to everyone and don’t forget to keep posting and share.

    Hi All
Born and bred Cantab here. I’ve been a serial dieter for years and in that time my weight has fluctuated between 107kg and 88kg. Over the last few years I have accumulated what seems to be 2 wardrobes, a fat one and a not so fat one. When the fat clothes start getting too tight, I start dieting! I guess over this time I have proved that I can lose weight, but can’t keep it off. Along the way I have learnt a few things though. 1)I am addicted to sugar and high GI carbs. 2)Restricting calories every day was a trial 3) At 50+,the amount of exercise that I needed to do when losing weight was not sustainable as I got older.
So on 10 Feb I started the 5:2 diet. Straight into a fast day(water/black tea/green tea) only for 36 hrs. I knew I had to do this as I wouldn’t have the will power to do just 600 calories (once I start eating I can’t stop)
As of today I have completed 3 water only FD and just about finished my 4th NFD(easily keeping below my TDEE) To say it has been a breeze is probably an understatement!
I gained lots of inspiration from this blog and decided to post, so when things aren’t going so well for me I can come back here for reference. I feel really good about this diet, the lack of hunger pains is amazing and I want to stay committed to it. Thanks to all who have posted here.

Hi Everyone, i’m in Mangawhai Heads. Only 3 fasts so far, lost 2 kgs. I bought the books online through Amazon for $9.99. Like skibabe, if i fast the morning i can have a 250 cal lunch which sees me thtu to a 250 cal dinner. Last week i did it differently and hit the wall at 2pm. So tired and very shivery. Had a better experience yesterday.
Welcome everyone. We’re going to lose weight together!

Looking forward to my weigh in tomorrow morning. Pretty confident of some weight loss. We went out for Valentines dinner and fitted quite easily into a shirt and jeans that have been too tight fitting for over 2 years.
Jumping to conclusions, but the main reason I had for wanting to reduce the high exercise (running+squash+cycling)I used to do when trying to lose weight was the aches and pains that resulted and inevitably injuries. Sore hips, lower back and aching knees have continued to plague me even though exercise of late has only been walking and biking. Progressively over the past week those pains have reduced to nothing- no more tossing and turning at night trying to get comfortable to get to sleep. Maybe weight loss will be secondary to the health benefits? Welcome to you too Sally, also looking forward to the journey.

Good morning all, well my first week went really well and I’m thrilled to bits as I have lost 3 kilo’s. I am on such a high this morning because it took me ages to get on the scales as I didn’t want to be so disappointed that I gave up. Soooo more of the same for this week. Didn’t find the fast days difficult at all so interesting to see if they are still easy this week.
Kiwiflyer….that would have been the Cats Pyjama’s, the owner is a friend from way back.
Hi Sally, you are from a beautiful part of the country too, welcome.
Drew, I too played a lot of sport Rep Netball, squash and I did a couple of marathons. Knees have had it but they wont give me a new knee until I lose weight, I’m hoping the weight loss will help with the knee pain.
Well ladies Im now into the second week so heres hoping its also a successful one.

    Hi everyone
I’m from Ohope Beach. I’ve been on the fast diet since Oct 2013. The first six weeks not a lot happen but its been a slow and steady loss. Lost around 18 kilos and I’m now in the healthy BMI. Also first Christmas where I was lighter after despite have a two/three week break.Feel fantastic absolute lifestyle change. Also vegetarian and have found this so easy.

Good Morning from UK to all my friends in Kiwiland.
Well it looks as though I will have to make another trip to New Zealand, because you guys are certainly losing the weight, must be something in the food or the scenery or just Kiwi determination.

Whichever it is you are doing great and I wish I was losing as much.
I guess I will have to pay more attention to the calorie count on my fast days and eat less on my non fast days.

Wekalegs, thanks yes the cats pyjamas was the Back packers I stayed at a lovely lady that ran it.
I stayed there for about a week, as I was waiting to start some flying lessons at a nearby airfield, but the Instructor could not be contacted so after a week I got fed up and after meeting some pilots from Stratford at an air show, I went over to Taranaki and stayed there for a couple of months .

Well, it seems that moist people are busy following their diet plans and achieving great things and losing weight, or maybe like me who is not shouting from the roof top because after 7 weeks have only lost about 1 kilo which is nothing to shout about.

Our fasting day is Monday and Thursday and we try and stick to the diet by eating only the bare amount of food which is no more than 500 calories.
No sugar, no milk no chocolate etc etc.

I don’t want to give up but it does seem like a waste of time at the moment, so I will study some Forum comments for a while and see if I can find a solution as to why I am not getting the results I had hoped for.

    How is everyone else doing?

Kiwi flyer dont give up my first week i gained and my loss for the next 6 weeks was similier to yours and then it just seemed to click in and i started losing small amounts. I am assuming that on non fast days you are still eating well, drinking water and being selective with your treat foods. I found my brain adjust ed my quantities and instead of choosing several sweet things i would only really eat what i really wanted rather than just because it was there.

    Thanks Diannajs,

Probably on my non fast days I still eat too much and especially do not drink enough water and also not enough exercise.
Difficult to drink much water now we are still in winter, but as the weather gets warmer I will try and drink more.

Also in another forum it was suggested that as people get older like over 65, the weight loss can be a lot slower which makes sense.

So I will of course stay with it and concentrate on more activity and drink more water.
    Thanks.

    John

Bit later than all of you here but just started in Auckland . First day yesterday . Have about 20kg to
Lose so seems a long road ahead but first step taken .

John as I wanted this to be a lifestyle I decided to only do the same amount of exercise of what I enjoy and would continue to comfortably do. I only really walk my dog for 20-30 mins most days of the week. My loss was always slow but I am happy as this is long term and my health is so much better.

Centro I have lost about 19 kilos now and maintaining I could never have imaged losing that much be encouraged it is so worth it.

Well, after a great start it all crashed and burned when we had visitors from hell. Someone we knew 47 years ago and not seen since made contact and was very unhappy, so I suggested he come and see us if he was in the area. Never ever will I do that again. Months later he arrived with a new girlfriend in tow whom we didn’t know and they stayed a week, first night they drank 6 bottles of wine between them. But,bought me a pumpkin from his garden as payment for my efforts of feeding and housing them.
I have learned that fish and visitors start to stink after 2 days, especially when they are heavy drinkers and we are not. They nearly drove me to drink but instead I went back into the kitchen (because I was spending so much time in there cooking for them anyway).
We then went away for three weeks to recoup, by then I had given up and was thinking to hell with it, so we ate out and I had a great time.
Back to reality and the realization that I cannot let people do this to me anymore, I have to put myself first and am determined it will not happen again. I had lost 5 kilos when the vistor’s arrived, and put on 3kilos by the time we got back off holiday, so am only down 2kilos which I guess is better than being right back where I started.
I am having my first fasting day today so here’s to fresh starts.
I am so angry at myself but determined to get back on track as I was starting to feel really good before it all went to hell in a handbasket.

    Wekalegs,

Well I would say that one Pumpkin for a week full board plus free booze is a great deal………… for your long lost (friends)

As you were able to lose 3k in your first week, you will surely be able to get back on the wagon in the next few days and pick up where you left off.

So good luck this week and keep in touch.

    Dianna,
Your attitude is well worth copying slow progress and long term results.

Now i am getting so used to fast on Monday and Thursday that even though my weight loss is not much so far, i will never give up.
This week I stopped using honey in tea and no sugar on my Corn flakes so that should start to make a difference.,
Also up here in England we are now starting our Spring weather, all the daffodils are out, the hedges are starting to go green, so will start drinking more water and getting more exercise.

    Kiwiflyer79
Hi there, certainly not spring here although the weather has been beautiful and quite hot.
Yes visitors got off fairly lightly cost wise, don’t want to see them again.
I have now had two good days fasting so am hoping my head will get right back into the good space again.
Its slowly but surely isn’t it, good luck with your own loss and the lack of ‘sweet’ to kick your day off.

Hiya I’m another newbie from Auckland(ish) – heard about 5:2 from my uncle, and my SOH’s grandmother – borrowed her books and am now underway 🙂
