Was the Book Depository a NZ one?

Hi, I’m in Central Otago. Been on the 5:2 journey for four weeks and have lost 8kg. I lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle with hours of sitting in a car, at the office or in the homes I visit. Now the days are longer, looking to re-introduce 1/2 hr walking into my life. First time in a long life of yo-yo dieting with various types of weight loss programmes, that I feel I am able to succeed. A really useful app to go along with this lifestyle change, is MyFitnessPal and it makes it simple to record foods etc. Hundreds of foods already listed, but also has a camera as part of the app that allows scanning a bar-codes to add to the lists of foods available. It has also made me more aware of what I am eating on non-fast days.
Hi KirstyM, I had steamed blue cod fish 100 grams (108 calories), topped with spring onions (3), finely chopped ginger (6) and 1t soya sauce (3), 1 cup steamed spinach (40 calories), 100 grams asparagus (22 calories).
I use my fitness pal app to log my calories. It’s great nearly everything I eat is on there. Plus they have this cool scanning feature which scans bar codes so will automatically find the item in the database!
Hi KirstyM, I did my weigh in last Saturday and put on 100 grams but I know that it could have been water weight. I would have been feeling a bit disheartened but I measured my body fat which dropped 1.2 % and took measurements which also went down. Have you taken your measurements? Your body can be losing fat and building muscle which weighs more. Another way to see if you have made any losses is to try on some pants or jeans that used to be tight on you before you started 5:2. Let me know how you go.
Hi KirstyM, I have scales that measures your weight and body fat percentage. Once you have percentage you can work out how much you have lost. I lost 800 grams fat and put on 900 grams muscle based on my rough calculations.
They say to take your measurements once a fortnight I think I read somewhere? See how you go this week. All the best!
Hi, Lorel on the Coromandel Peninsula here. I haven’t started 5:2 yet, waiting for my books from The Book Depository in the UK. $36 for both, free delivery. Should be here any day now.
However, back in January I decided to completely change my lifestyle because at 101kg I was going nowhere fast. I cut out all the sugary treats and fatty foods but I had always eaten healthy food in addition to those, so it was no hardship to just keep eating healthily. To help things along, I added 10 minutes on my rebounder EVERY morning and a 45-60 minute daily walk, weather permitting. So far I’ve lost 18kg but have struck a plateau for the last 4 or 5 weeks, hovering between 83 & 83.7kg so I’m hoping the 5:2 will give me a kick start to get going again.
I’ve noticed someone earlier in this thread saying they like the fast diet because you fast 2 days a week then eat what you like the other days. That’s not how I interpreted the message. I took it to mean fast for 2 days but eat NORMALLY for the other days. By normally, they mean a normal HEALTHY diet, not what you normally ate before starting the Fast Diet. It’s a subtle difference, but one that matters because if you carry on eating the way you always have, you will probably eat more sweet and fatty things before or after your fast days, maybe without realising you’re compensating.
Yes, you can have treats, but not every day. Save them for the important times, like going out to dinner with family or friends, etc.
Hi…first fast day today: feeling it but feel determined. Doing the 5/2 with my husband, but he thinks he will do the 500 calories too..we’ll see. Can’t wait to see results. Watched the doco from BBC Knowledge a good 4 times before my books arrived from Book Depository. Cookbook came today & I suspect we will really enjoy the recipes. Am on Kapiti Coast.
I know the feeling, Fastkiwi. I ordered my books on 19th October from The Book Depository and got an email on 22nd telling me they were on their way. So where are they? On the plane? In customs? In a NZ Post Mail Centre? It’s anyone’s guess. I had hoped they’d be here today but it will now be Monday at the earliest because we don’t have Saturday deliveries here. I just want to GET GOING!
I fear my books are still growing I a forest somewhere.
You don’t need the FD book to get started. All you need to know is for two days a week eat no more than 500 calories and you’re off. You’ll get loads of support from this forum and you’ll enjoy reading about the health benefits and more detail when the book arrives. Did you see Michaels documentaries on BBC Knowledge? Just tried to find a link for you but couldn’t find what I was looking for….does anyone else know the link for Lorel?
I just want the recipe books because I’m getting tired of looking up calorie counts and food labels still confuse me. Going to do some more research on that now.
Now on my 6th fasting day in three weeks. Usually do Thursday but had to host a wine dinner last night and switched it to Friday. Can’t remember the last time I went a Friday night without wine. The good thing about this way of life is that there’s always tomorrow.
Target Monday for a 500 cal day and good luck.

The book is just a little deeper than the doco, but if you watch this, it will get you motivated.

FastKiwi, Dumpling and USA, thank you for the great support. I have watched the Horizon recording and will work my way through the links that USA has posted. I think I’ll start with fast-days on Tuesdays and Fridays and see how that fits with my lifestyle, though being retired I can be as flexible as I like. Now I just need to be organised and make sure I know what I’m going to eat on those days and be sure I have the right stuff in my fridge/cupboards. I’m notorious for not deciding what to eat until I wake in the morning, but I can see I shall have to be better prepared to meet the chanllenges.

I’m in Auckland, Albany on the north shore. I saw the documentary on TV and thought it would be worth a try. Since I hit so-called “middle age” its been harder to stay in trim. And I like the idea of staying healthy as I get older. As a teenager, I saw how my grandmother’s brain deteriorated in old age until she no longer recognised her family. I SO don’t want that to happen to me! With high blood pressure and heart disease in the family, I’m determined not to go there either. I’ve been doing 5:2 for two weeks and lost 2 kilos already. Realistically I’d like to lose about 8-10kg which would bring me down to around 58-60kg. I fast during the week and find the food part of fast days easy. I don’t often manage to not have a glass of wine (or two) at the end of the day tho!
Hi lorel,
If you click on my name , you can see a thread I started ( topic) re the food I’m going to eat.
I tried it and wasn’t organised so suffered!!! You do have to be very organised re food or you will get hungry and grumpy!!
So I started again and Sunday will be my third fast ( in 3 weeks!!! But only got serious last Thursday)
You need low cal veg and salad stuff in your home. Pick your veg carefully…you want the most bang for your buck.
I used the cals in the back of the book.
Although he has kidney beans wrong….
Thank you USA for the welcome and gossip girl, good luck.
Hi Gossip Girl – you sound just like me. I love my glass if wine at the end of the day and until my 6th fast day also had my glass. I will see how I go because I have to consider the 120calories in that glass of wine and what I would like instead of it???? I am from Wellington and would like to get to around the same weight as you, after losing just over 3kg in 3 weeks, I still have another 12kg to go. Losing it slowly is OK with me as it means it goes back on slower. I love this way of living, it suits me as I could never stick with permanent dieting – it’s to cruel, especially at family or friend meals! Must admit these posts are really good at helping keep up the moral etc, as almost everyone has some kind of problem now and then and you know that you are not alone. Good luck to you and everyone else on this life changing fasting.
I’m from Auckland and just finished my third week. I fast Wednesday and Friday and have lunch and dinner both days. For me this gives me the most fasting hours – between dinner on Tuesday and lunch on Wednesday is a good long patch. I seem to cope with the morning alright but when I did breakfast and dinner I’d get a bit obsessively hungry in the afternoon. Now if I feel a bit peckish I grab a herbal tea (Healthries Be Charged is really yummy) and I know the pang will be gone in 10 minutes tops plus I know tomorrow I get to eat. I’m losing nearly 1kg a week which suits me as I want to do it right. That said it beats what I’d do on those calorie counting diets where I always felt deprived. I’m also doing 10000 steps a day and two sessions of tabata – a bit like the HIIT Michael Mosley did – a week.
Nicmc, I do tabata, but just one lot! What do you do?
Maureen, do you mean kilo joules? What are kcals? In the kindle version it’s just calories in the back. But there is a K in front,
What’s the difference? I know a kj is 4 times a calorie , but I thought a calorie was a calorie, with or without the k
Kidney beans ( canned, drained) on on line calorie counters say 82 100 grams and the book says 311
It seemed to be triple
If they are under 100 cals they are good bang for ya meal.
Low fat, high protein and fibre etc
Dumpling, I use this web-site for nutrition data because it’s so extensive. I know it’s a US site, but it’s still very good, gives you a choice of the measurement you want to use, ie, 100g, 1 ounce (28g) or 1 cup. There’s tons more useful information on the site, too. Would take a month of Sundays to get around it all. http://nutritiondata.self.com/
If you want to be a bit more accurate with converting your kilojoules in calories, divid the Kj by 4.2.
Dumpling, I do 20secs of extreme pedalling, 10 secs rest repeated eight times so it’s about 4 mins of time spent.
What we call calories are nutritional calories rather than heat unit calories. They are 1000 heat unit calories I think or the other way round. If you’re using something like google you either convert kilo joules to nutritional calories or convert kcal to kj but online calculators just do it automatically. Clear as mud!
Nic
Thank you for the site, will go have an explore. I downloaded some tracker app thing which could let you do the weight / cups as well.
Fat calories.com was also good but they had vermicelli wrong, so I don’t trust them now!
A kilocalorie is like a kilo joule but 4 times less. So 400 kj = 100 cals.
I don’t know why we can’t be like everyone else and use calories !!
It would make reading labels sooooo much easier.
But hey, we like to read things in mega amounts.
Ie 8000 kjs needed etc
So I think in the book a kcal…is NOT a kj. Cos other websites back his amounts up, in calories.
Why can’t all food be 10 calories per 100 grams!
Nicmc I do my bike for 8 as well!
Did you download the seconds free app. It has a tabata timer on it. I see some timers cost.
It’s great, you can program music etc so you have music for the 20 seconds or not..or just during the rest.
It also counts down when you get to 3
And tells you when the rest is up at 3 seconds too so you don’t actually have to look at it.
You can have a warm up and cool down for how ever many minutes you want. Or don’t have it..your choice.
I think it is the best exercise program ever..4 mins. Done.
I was doing it to run up our back yard, but winter came and wet grass! But I realised how puffed I would get and how unfit, even though I did the bike ( also tried sprint 8, dr mercola)
But then Jon Gabriel did tabata and I was like..that’s better!
But the hill is different to the bike. Will try it again now my shoes won’t get saturated ( we are on an acre)
I do an upper body one
All done sitting on end of bed
Grinding, like on a boat ( think dean barker)
Running ( just arms)
Both hands together and pushing them out and then in to chest and then up. Clamped the whole time
Both fists by chin and one arm up and then the other arm up.
Then Repeat.
Till 4 mins is up
Great if you don’t have much leg movement and gets heart pumping.
We love anaerobic!!!!. Which is what your heart needs.
We leave for France end of the month ( hubby is there now on a 3 mth scholarship, thank you nz govt, as he teaches French here and they want him To be excellent ) he also does maths.
I haven’t seen him since sept, so when I see him end nov with the kids. I would like to be a little slimmer.
We then have 6 weeks travelling, and I know food ( ESP in England and America) will be nuts, at least if I am use to cutting way down on 2 days a week, my weight shouldn’t balloon.
At least that is the theory!!
Dumpling, I do much the same thing. I only got the bike two weeks ago so prior to that I was doing sprints, squats, jumps whatever to do my time. I love the time saving angle.
The bright side of your UK and US journey is – they use calories on the food so you won’t have to do any math.
KiwiLarry – Briscoes definitely have the fat percentage scales – various brands. Bit more pricy than the regular ones. They often have sales though. Tanita do a BmI scale and the fitbit aria does BMI as well. Fishpond often have BMI scales but they can take forever to come because they are acting as an agent for Amazon so they also end up quite costly.
@kiwilarry
“Where can I buy one of these weighing machines that say BMI?”
I’ve been using mine for over a year:

betalean, my books arrived yesterday, 16 days after ordering. That’s the longest it has taken from the Book Depository but I suspect the hold-up was in NZ, not the UK.
I see the ‘manual’ is online at various prices on TradeMe but not the recipe book. I can see why, the recipe book is going to be REALLY useful for inspiration.
Hi Betalean,
My books came today also, 24 days! Going to need them though. Bit disappointed my weigh in was only a measly 300grm and 1cm loss this morning. After losing 5kg in the first couple of weeks and 10cm overall I almost feel like of put on weight. My better half experienced the same thing last week but lost over a 1kg this week so at least she’s happy again. Might mean I have another big week next week? Here’s hoping.
Just flicked through the book’s….going to enjoy the slow cooker recipes for sure. If we get prepared in the morning and come home to a cooking meal I won’t feel like kicking the cat when I get in on fast days. I get very irritable at about 6pm I’m finding and trying to count calories and rummage for food while 1 child needs help with homework and the other one has the stereo up full noise doesn’t help.
Happy fasting everyone,
FK
Hi Fast Kiwi and Lorel,
I’m glad your books arrive. We must have received them in same batch. Not going to complain too much since they were cheaper than buying in NZ.
I know what you mean about getting grumpy when you’re hungry. I called it being hangry (hungry plus angry). It’s not a pretty picture when that happens to me. You don’t want to be between me and the fridge!
I was so hungry yesterday I burnt myself on fry pan while I was cooking my omelette. Not good as I dropped half my breakfast on the kitchen floor! I was too hungry to remeasure everything so just cut calories in half and savoured each bite of the left over omelette and made the rest of the calories up at dinner
Keep going with the fasting I’m guessing some weeks you lose lots and others not so much. I put on 100 grams in my first week but lost 1.5 kg last week. I’m hoping there will be another loss this Saturday before I go away to Fiji on Sunday. Then I can wear my togs without scaring anyone by the pool.
Happy fasting for rest of the week!
Does the 24 hour fast mean that no food ‘for 24 hours’ – or (as my wife tells me) I must fast ‘all day’ no food from morning until bedtime – i.e. no food from last night’s dinner to tomorrow morning’s breakfast. I make that 36 hours. I say ‘dinner at 6:30 Monday – dinner at 6:30 Tuesday no food in between That’s 24 hours. But I am usually wrong!
