  • Hi everyone my name is Monica I’m 31 and have decided to try 5:2.

My story is I lost 41.5lbs with weight watchers 4 years ago, maintained well for nearly three years then began having issues with my gallbladder and gained 14lbs back. Had my op in February this year and tried to get back into losing weight. No matter what I tried it kept piling on plus I was feeling generally rubbish so I went to see my GP. I have since been diagnosed with under active thyroid and was started on levothyroxine nearly three weeks ago. The amount I need to lose now is 2st 6lbs.

It has been an awful year in terms of my health and while my main aim is to lose weight, I would like to become healthier in general as this along with medication could stabilise my thyroid issue.

So tomorrow is my first fast day, I’ve never done fasting before and I’m concerned I’ll give into the cravings and hunger. Any tips on how to get around this? Sorry for the long post, look forward to chatting with you all,
    Monica xx

    Hi Monica,

All I can tell you is how I stay strong when I feel a craving coming on. I don’t weigh myself but I keep track of my waist measurement. When I start to grab something unhealthy or loaded with calories I envision what my current measurement is and what I want it to be. I then tell myself if I eat this it’s going to be that much harder to get there.

Maybe you can play the same trick by seeing the scale numbers in your mind. You’ve lost weight before and can do it again.

By the way, you’ll find out that fasting isn’t as bad as it sounds. I wish you great success.

    Hi Monica,
    My tips:
Plan your little meal or meals for tomorrow (mine is porridge in the morning and soup in the evening)
And when you are feeling really hungry: success! that is the point of the fasting!
Try and distract yourself with a walk etc.
Keep telling yourself that it is just one day. You can do it.

Good luck! Let us know how you go!

    Hi

Thank you both for the welcome. Things changed a little and I didn’t manage o start my fast day when I wanted to but today is the day!

Fast day 1. 2st 6lbs to lose, i go on holiday in 29days. The plan is as follows:
B: porridge (lighterlife low cal porridge bought from superdrug) with raspberries and blueberries.
L: weightwatchers chicken soup with 6 melba toast
    D: 2 morrisons stuffed mushrooms

    Total = 515kcal

Lots of green tea and water through the day and might try do my 30 day shred dvd if i have the energy.

Does this sound ok for a fast day? I bought some of the lighterlife products in case im out and about and need something quick but dont really want to base my whole fast day around them. Its all put into my fitness pal but because im under the minimum of 1000 cals it wont let me “complete” my diary.

    Have a good day xx

    Monica,

I don’t like the melba toast part of your plan, but that’s just me. I equate melba toast with being diet food. But hey, if you like it that’s all that matters.

I hope you don’t want to lose all the weight before you go on holiday; that would be over 1 pound a day if my stone to pound calculation is correct. Being in the U.S. I had to look up how much a stone is in pounds! From what I’ve read, no more than 2 pounds a week is the best approach for lasting weight loss. Slow and steady seems to be the way to go.

I know how you feel about delaying your 5:2 start. Knowing that I had to lose weight, it took me about a year after hearing of the Lose It Iphone app to actually commit to doing it. Commitment was the hardest part for me, but once I was there it became part of my routine and became easier (and encouraging) as I saw results.
