  • Hi All,

I just started the diet yesterday and hope I can achieve some of the great results I’ve read about on this forum so far.

I actually have a couple questions:

    1. Are calories burned through exercise added to your allotted total on fast days?
For example, I am allotted 600 calories on a fast day. But if I burn 300 calories through exercising, then am I allowed to have 900 calories, or should I still limit myself to 600?

    2. Are calories burned through exercise added to your allotted total on non-fast days?

    3. If I consume 800 instead of 600 calories consistently on fast days, would the consequence be that my weight loss is slowed down? Or would it result in the diet not working?

    4. Lastly, I’m doing the 5:2 right now with a cal breakdown of 2250:600. If I fast for 3 days, can I consumer more calories on the non fast days?

    Thanks in advance!

In the strictest sense, no you do not add the exercise calories to your 600 calories. This makes sense as calories from exercises are often over-estimates.

Also when you calculate your TDEE you put in your level of exercise, so you already have a greater allowance.

At the beginning I would stick strictly to the rule.

Personally, I have shifted the guidelines. I have been in maintenance for quite a long time now and have kept my goal weight, in fact I am still losing.

I train for a full marathon and regularly burn far over 1000 calories, measured with a heart rate monitor and a high end sports watch. My profile for the calculation of my TDEE is set to sedentary, so I do have to eat some of my exercise calories back, if I don’t want to lose too much more weight.

Again, as you have just started, keep to your 600 calories and exercise will help you to lose faster.

    Best of luck
    Stef.
