  • Okay

    Here it is.

I’m a 52 year old NHS manager who was a size 8-10 most of her life until she got a desk job and fell in love with a complete and utter foodie.

In less than two years, I’ve piled just under 3 stone on. I’m 5ft 4in with a BMI of 26.1 and weigh 11 stone.

    I loathe exercise
I love wine (up to three large glasses a night – sorry – horrific, but being honest)… (but, fortunately, hate chocolate or cake)

Today is my second fast day

    – I’m missing my White Zinfandel!
    – My bloke/partner is doing one of those Intense Insanity training programmes (way to go, him…. but no thanks) and is eating what he likes.
    – I feel tired, jittery and tearful
    – He keeps trying to make me eat stuff because he says I’ll make myself ill, and ‘all this faddy diet stuff’ is ridiculous

I have six weeks to shift as much weight as possible, before I go on holday with Mr Adonis

I know some of it will be the wine thingy, but I am so bloomin’ HUNGRY!

Please tell me this will pass

    *sobs*

    Hi Gym and welcome:

First, you don’t have to exercise to lose weight.

Second, 5:2 is not a fast weight loss diet, although some lose a bit of water weight at the start (that they gain back quickly if they start eating/drinking too many carbs).

Here are some tips that might help – ‘Warnings’ is a good start: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

    Dear Gymknickers,

It will pass. The first fast or two are the hardest but they do get easier. The best way to enjoy a meal with your bloke is to save up your calories and have them in a dinner. 500 calories makes a big meal. Wine I can’t help you with, I’m not a drinker, but I do find saving my calories until dinner quite doable and then I have a nice dinner with the family.

The hunger will pass. Maybe you can distract yourself by reading through posts on this forum or going for a walk. Walks definitely help the hunger pass.

Be strong. Ask your bloke for support. This does work.

Thank you, I appreciate your time to reply and your support in huge bucketloads 🙂

To be honest, I’ve taken a long time to decide to do the 5:2. My bloke’s football team got promoted this week, so this weekend is just going to have to be written off because of the amount of Guinness that will be consumed on the final day of the season!

So I’m trying to ‘save up’ calories.

I’m still struggling to get my head round this TDEE in relation to 5:2 (and that’s with a nursing background). I wonder if it’s nutritionally safe to restrict significantly during the week to save up

So – my TDEE is 1542 (allegedly).

If I do alternate days, this week of 500/1000/500/1000/1000, (maximum values), am I safe to have a blow-out, this Saturday and then get back on the wagon on Sunday?

    Sorry to be a pain.

    Hi Gym:

If you read number four in my post you will understand TDEE.

You are dealing with the very basics of weight gain and weight loss – you will gain weight if you eat/drink too much, and you will only lose if you eat/drink less than you have been. This is hard to do if you don’t change your eating/drinking habits. You want to lose weight quickly but still eat/drink a lot this weekend. Perhaps it would be better to start changing your habits after the season end party.

I guess you can try what you outlined, but it will be difficult for a beginner.

    Good Luck!

    Hiya Gymknickers

Thanks for making your misery into an amusing tale!

I’m with VirginiaEdie: these early struggles will abate as you get into the 5:2 habit. Posting, walking are both good ways of coping – am sure you will find others which suit you too. Relaxation exercises, having a laugh etc etc work well for me. Hope ‘Mr Pants’ (with apologies to Cole Porter) does support you but come and join us too, on https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/who-wants-to-join-me-summer-pledge

I agree with simco, too, that it’s not a ‘quick fix’. Is weight loss for your holiday your only motivation? I think it’s great for a short term goal but probably best to be realistic about how much you will lose in that time: otherwise you might set yourself up for disappointment. It sounds like a wish to get back to your size 8 – 10 life is also a motivating factor. Maybe you could try and build on that, to help you stay the course in the longer term.

    All the best 🙂

    Hi Gym knickers

Love your frankness about the wine, being equally frank, the wine is what put the weight on! I know, I like a glass myself. Or rather, the bottle. In my house a bottle is usually three large glasses.

BUT Im near your height and was a lot heavier before I tackled it. So, from my perspective, still in the mid 12 stones, your not at a bad starting point. Simcoeluv is spot on about this not being a quick weightloss, but you could give yourself a chance, if you drop the booze – its the booze that makes it harder to not eat too. He points out, quite rightly, that you have set a very difficult calorie timetable. I think you would find it very very hard, and impossible without ditching the booze. Longterm, drink is not off limits, thank goodness.

So, if you are REALLY serious about looking good next to your Adonis, this is my advice!

Cut the alcohol today! Plan to go back on at the weekend – and ONLY at the weekend. Have your blow out. Enjoy every minute and every sip. If you PLAN to have the eeekend off, it will be fine!

Monday morning get back to the forum with a plan! A few are doing the Fast Beach Diet, the hardcore version of 5:2.

Basically no booze, more exercise, strictly adhering to your plan.

Apparently, everyone will get beach bodies at the end of it! Ive ordered my bikini!!!

Well, perhaps not, but starting at 11 stone means you have a great chance of getting there. A bottle of white zifandel is about 650 cals, rose more.

Miss five bottles a week you will save about 4500-5000 calories, a pound and a half of fat x 6 weeks 9lbs.

Imagine if you did something with your food intake. Imagine what you could buy as a real treat with the money you save! If you decide to bo for it, wow! And tell the Adonis to get on board, don’t let him derail you!

Too hard? I dont think so, its just for six weeks!

Hi. I have been lurking for while on the forums. Am a Loac but also an NHS manager with a love for the wine so feel some empathy. I have lost 9lbs so far in 6 weeks and am really confident that this diet is the solution for achieving a balance between being relatively healthy and enjoying a good social life. I am also going on holiday in 11 sleeps so have an additional incentive called ‘vanity’
I have found that it is easier to do fast days when I am working but you really need to plan ahead so that you can avoid temptation.
These are the strategies I have used to try to keep motivated.

    – arrange your wardrobe with everything that fits at one end ,everything that is too small at the other and all points in between. This has helped me as every couple of weeks I get to be reacquainted with old friends that I haven’t worn for a while

    – keep a diary to record what you have eaten, what your motivation is and how many units of alcohol you have had. Have to say on some days calorie intake of wine has been more than those of food but it’s a good feeling when you can write 0 units ( occasionally!! )

    – drink loads of water

    – don’t worry if you can’t do 500 calories, on bad weeks I have had more like 7-800 and just squeezed in an extra day to compensate

    – the joy of this way of life- and at 57 years old and only 5ft 3 it has to be a way of life-is that I am not depriving myself of anything and it has been relatively painless. I have also reduced portion sizes because I feel full so much quicker

    – it’s ok to use some ready meals. I have used innocent ready meals, cartons of soup and bare naked noodles to make quick and easy calorie choices.

    – remember it’s only one day at a time, unless you go really hard core, tomorrow you can eat and enjoy food. Temper this with a realistic view of what your intake should be on “feast days”. Over a few weeks you will find that you get full quicker and will naturally reduce your intake but be vigilant in the first few weeks.

    – the forums are great for keeping motivated, I feel ashamed for lurking but have been encouraged and motivated by looking at them everyday. Milena and Jaye girl have been very supportive to all comers and full of humour and wise words ( thank you ladies !)
Anyway I have now joined the forums officially so let’s keep chatting, smiling and sharing the highs and not so highs of our journeys to gorgeousness.

My, oh my… you are all just ACE!! I really love your support and positivism <3

Giving up the booze is difficult. I gave up smoking last October (30 a day habit for 38 years)and it’s hard to manage that and also give up the booze and my favourite foods, but I’m pretty determined 🙂

I did have at least a bottle of Zinfandel a day (evening). Because I am well under limit, this week, I had a small glass, last night. It tasted so STRONG! (normally, I can drink it like water). I poured a second and had one sip and left it. I’m gobsmacked.

I was really cold, last night and slept in a jumper and shorts (and now I have read the newbie advice, I understand why). I actually feel really good, this morning. I’m taking vitamin B complex to help me over the energy dip and prevent hair loss (blimey, Vit B STINKS!)

I have also discovered the joys of Hartley’s 10Cal jellies. When the hunger is bad, I have half a tub. It also helps the medicine go down 🙂

Drinking tons of water. Peeing as if my life depended on it. Liver and kidneys don’t know what’s hit them and the pain in my lower back that I usually wake up with has gone, already (that would be the alcohol and dehydration and poorly kidneys, then).

So I guess I am not a newbie now, officially.

    Where do I post updates?

    Gymmers xx

    Hi Gym:

You have done incredibly well by quitting smoking. Be proud!

The pains you have are not unusual.

Post here, and stick with 5:2 – it works but takes time!

    Hey Jim Nickers!

So glad you got through your tough patch yesterday. Yes, you are now officially an ‘old hand’ at 5:2.

It’s amazing how quickly one’s tolerance to alcohol goes down, isn’t it? Sounds like it’s associated with post-work relaxation for you but I’m sure you’ll find other ways to wind down (just don’t get hooked on those jellies, haha!)

I also still shiver on my FDs – evenings especially. Not helped by the sudden downturn in temperature in UK, either.

    Take care

    Hi Gymknickers,

I feel your pain about being cold at night. I am going to bed with ski socks on with my jim jams tucked into the. Am looking good on a fast night!

The fast days do get easier. I started with 3 small meals during the day (mostly quorn products) but think that it makes me want to eat more. Now one decent meal in the evening when fasting. Not big wine drinker but gin is my weakness. Although only 52 cals, I do usually want a few especially if good quality gin.

    Good luck with future fasts
