  • Ugh. I feel really rubbish!
Last week I did both fast days (Mon & Wed) but this weekend I kind of lost the plot a little.
Even though technically speaking Fri/Sat/Sun were not fast days I think I ended up overeating, had takeout and chocolate, and now I feel like a hippo!
I really need to stick to my TDEE on non fast days.
    Back on a fast today!

I’m feeling exactly the same. I went away on a short holiday a month ago and have not been able to stick to a fast day since. I keep talking myself into them and then giving in to temptations. My social life is ridiculously busy and I don’t want to isolate myself by fasting in social situations. I’m getting caught up in the all or nothing thinking, for example, “oh well, I’ve eaten something at lunch time instead of fasting for 24 hours, blown it now, may as well start tomorrow.”

I have insulin resistance and have been told to get my weight down by about 10kgs, I was nearly there but the last few weeks have been incredibly busy socially and I haven’t been able to stay committed. I haven’t weighed myself but I’m fairly certain I’ve gained back at least half of what I lost by “starting tomorrow” and never really getting there.

Any tips on how to regain my motivation?

Yeah I just posted in another area about the difficulties with “social eating” because let’s face it. We’re social animals, us humans.

And idea of having to become a hermit in order to follow this or any diet as well as change one’s eating habits while surrounded by other people, family, friends that don’t have dietary issues ? ! Depressing!

Don’t know about you but I’m finally waking up to all of the “social eating” that I do that involves making someone “happy” by having a second helping. Ugh.

As far as regaining motivation, I’ve found using your 5:2 tracker up there at the right hand side of the home page of this site really helpful. I weigh/measure in only once a week. No more, no less. I’d certainly recommend you looking at that part of the site if you haven’t yet.

Sometimes you feel like you have “fallen off the wagon” as you say but indeed you have compensated at another moment in the week. And the damage “might” not be as great as you thought! That’s my experience at any rate!

Here we are back to Monday, and i’m on a fast day !

Don’t beat yourself up about it! These habits are very difficult to change. Even a little progress is so encouraging. With 5:2, it does indeed seem to offer to deal with our eating habits in a way that isn’t damaging for our bodies. Precious that they are!

I’m joining you both! Did the exact same thing! Totally lost it this weekend with entirely too much pizza last night! I woke up feeling hungry and disgusted! Even had a chocolate bar after the pizza because was so over the edge at that point! Ugh!,,, I’m fasting today! Help! Can we try and stay in contact to get each other through? Was feeling so good before yesterday! 🙂

    Desperate

    Ah we can but try!
    I only started last week!
I’m just not sure I’ll lose any weight as I seem to go overboard at the weekends.
Non fast weekdays I’m not so bad but I really should try and stick to my TDEE.
I made a decision early on not to weigh or measure myself. I’ll be able to feel it in my clothes etc.

    Aw Desperate!

We are with you! Just edited my post to say Don’t beat yourself up! Hang in there! I’m on a fast day today too!

    moreaboutmyself,

I know the weighing thing can become obsessive. But I really think that weekly reality check using the tracker is really useful and helpful.

Just have a look at how it works. There is also a place where you write a little comment about the past week for yourself! No one else can read that part of your tracker. So it’s just kind of between you and yourself there.

Sometimes the differences are minimal but present! And frankly that is so encouraging!

    -Trying Harder

Thx trying harder! Really do believe it helps knowing others going through same thing and feeling same way. 🙂 it’s hard for me because food is all around! I have kids so there is always good stuff in the house! And even in my office people are always ordering in and eating! 🙂

    We can do this!
Desperate, I’m so much like you! I will end up going ‘well I may aswell have this, and then this!’ and it spirals from there!
So far I’ve had just a coffee and saving my cals for later.

One thing I have noticed since being on 5-2 is that I’m drinking a lot less wine! Don’t want to use the calories! Would have thought I would lose a lot more just because of that! Honestly I was having at least a couple glasses every night! Last month only 3 or 4 total! Maybe I should go back to drinking! LOL!,,

i’m referring to the “Tracker” not the app by the way. It’s free ! The app is you know, for iphones etc.

The measurements are the only thing that are slightly more than one would do normally right?

But hey, get yourself a tape measure, even a paper one out at an Ikea and have it by
the computer. It takes all of a minute to make the measurements. You really do see some interesting changes. Slow but sure.

Feeling a difference in the fit of your clothing? I think that takes awhile. And it is certainly the first months when any diet is so difficult to stick too.

Those little changes, offer the needed encouragement! At least they do me!

    -Trying Harder !

Ahhh drinking! I had several glasses of wine yesterday too!

Do you know how much sugar is in one glass of wine? Beer ?

I once piled up sugar cubes to represent a glass of wine. Its something like seven cubes of sugar! No one in their right mind would eat seven cubes of sugar. But we don’t even think twice about drinking the equivalent!

I’m trying to make having a glass of wine just a special occasion every once in awhile. A good glass of wine too not some generic plonk.

    -Trying Harder

    Hi trying harder!

I’m off today so got busy with the kids and just checking in. I held out eating until 530pm. Then had tossed salad, and beef stir fry with veggies no rice. After dinner took kids to 16 handles and had small frozen yogurt. All totaled just under 500 k. I’m done eating for today! Not hungry at all because ate everything pretty late. It’s 830pm here. 7 easpoons sugar in one glass of wine? Seriously? Damn! By the way I dont use tracker but I love myfitnesspal! It’s amazing! And free! Take a look! You can even scan foods with bar codes! Can count exercise and everything. By the way I measured manually when started this a month ago. My waist was 31 and still same now 🙁 but I’ve only lost 5 or 6 pounds. My BMI went from 24.2 to 23.2 so that’s good. Just inconsistent. Thanks for your support! I’ve posted few times and no one barely ever writes back to me! Clearly I’m not one of the forum’s chosen ones:) lol.

    Desperate

    Hey that’s great Des !

You are hanging in there, I’m not quite sure what the measurment and BMI numbers mean for you, nor how far or close you are to your goal but hey ! You are informing yourself, trying to get a handle on the process required, and tackling the problem.

    Me too!

That’s what is so neat about the sugar cube count photos to be found elsewhere on the net. It helps us visualize more precisely and locate where those hidden sugars are.

As far as trying out another tracker like your fitness tracker suggestion ? One i dont do an awful lot of fitness training. havent joined a gym and wouldnt know how to do anything in one.

and a tracker that uses bar codes ? I’m lucky to live in a country where one has a choice as to where to buy their food. I get my fruit and veg at the market or at a fruit and veg shop. meats, fish at a store devoted to one or the other. I stay away from the supermarkets and places with their fruit and veg under plastic wrap in eat little packages. The already made salads, the “innocent” fruit smoothies, apple and orange juice all so packed with sugars that they boggle the mind !

So barcodes ? Scanning bar codes ? Don’t have any of those thank goodness. No prepared foods either.

I subscribe to Michael Pollan’s “Eat only foods that have been cooked by humans.”

I get real pleasure from making even the simplest of meals or a soup or two that lasts me for a week of meals. And always give some time each weekend to food preparation and shopping for the next week.

I like the idea that I’m offering nutrients to this body. “feeding oneself” seems to be a healthy activity this way. Feeding mind as well as body.

Voila ! Good luck to you too!

We are all here off and on the wagon together !

Can’t find any information about how many calories there actually are in a glass of wine, it would help me put things in perspective. Not mentioned in the fast diet book, nor in the MyFitnessPal app which I find completely unintuitive and useless anyway, but I’ve posted about that elsewhere.
So managing 2 weeks so far of 5:2 with no wine on the fast days, but I would really like a simple calorie counter including wine to keep track on normal days too.
Curious from Paris, not the ideal place to be trying this …

And I agree with Trying Harder, I mostly buy and eat real food, the MyFitnessPal app doesn’t seem geared to that at all. Product ? Maker ?? Barcode ??? How to add just a boiled egg for example, it can’t be that difficult, surely ?
    Frustrated from Paris

Hi, I think it depends on the size of the glass!!!

A medium glass of wine 175 cl a quarter of the bottle. Between about 120 and 135 calories, roughly dry at the bottom end of the scale to sweeter, though dessert wines can be more.

Decent stuff or cheap plonk, pretty much the same – and the 5:2 life is too short to drink bad wine!!!!

Myfitnesspal apps is like a satnav app, frustrating, if you tell it what sort of egg, boiled etc, it it will give you loads of options.

    hope that helps

    Hi PB in Paris

I do a lot of ‘proper’ cooking and use this calorie counter:
    http://www.foodfocus.co.uk

I presume it includes wine but it’s not my tipple so you’d have to check that.

    Bonne chance!

    BB
