  • Hi all

I started this diet yesterday and it really was not difficult. When I heard about this from a colleague he advised that you take nothing in except herbal tea and a bit of coffee if you choose to. He did not mention the 500 cal on fasting days.

Monday evening I had my dinner and I went the entire day yesterday just drinking herbal tea and then had a nutritious dinner last night – 24 hours after my last meal. Is it wrong that I do it like this?

The reason I ask is I am the type of person that once I start eating I will remain hungry throughout the day Whereas if I don’t even start I can maintain that for 24 hours. I will keep some veggies and lean protein at hand should I have a Blood-Sugar drop.

So my question is… Is it ok to fast for 24 hours and then have a healthy meal? This will be much easier for me.

Also what is the recommended length of time one should remain on 5:2? Or is it a lifestyle?

    Thanks and regards
    Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

Many people fast for 24h and then have their 500 calories. I just water fast for the full 36h because I eat more on my non fast days that most do, so I’m trying to push the fasting. If you do eat on fast days, it is more important to be careful on the non fast days to not overeat.

For many people 5:2 is a way of life, often called WOL here. However there are people that drop out and sometimes come back. There are also people that reduce the fasting to say 1 day a week to maintain their weight. Some people do other forms of fasting too. It is pretty flexible.

I think one concept that is useful it to eat you would for your goal weight. The general concept of diet and then eat normal just leads to yo-yo dieting.

Overtime you may find the fasting will have profound impacts on your diet. Many people pull away from processed foods and more towards healthier diet and often it is just a natural thing. For others it just doesn’t happen. There is a wide range of effects and outcomes. However many people do become more aware of their bodies and the messages sent by their bodies.

    Good luck to you!
