Late fifties and need to get healthy

  • Just starting today, Im 58 and want to feel healthy for 60. At present, feel bloated, unhealthy out not in control. I work full time and find I am too tired to do anything at the end of the day… which is the worst thing, as I have a very sedentary office job. Hence my weight has skyrocketted in the last couple of years. Too easy to come home and have a few wines and then eat more than I should than get out and exercise. Hopefully getting serious about this regime and getting involved in the forums will motivate me to get up and get going. Love to get to 60 looking and feeling awesome… not like a worn out soul.

    Jenlil, you are correct: inactivity breeds inactivity. If you get a 30 minute lunch break, take an apple and some water and go for a walk. See how far you go one day, then try to go farther the next day, and so on. This alone should help you to lose weight and have more energy. What floor do you work on? Can you take the stairs part of the way? All these little things will give you some activity in your sedentary day.

    Try not to confuse boredom with hunger. Make sure you are drinking enough water.

    I can so relate, I too am 58 and aiming to be in glowing health for my 60th. I began 5:2 on 26 June and since July I have joined in the monthly challenges on this forum which has been a great way to keep focused. I’m doing 800 calorie fast days on Mondays and Thursdays and I’ve cut down on refined carbs and sugary foods. So far I’ve had a slow but steady loss of 17 pounds. It hasn’t been difficult, I’ve continued to enjoy drinking wine (though I am more careful about the amount these days and not on a fasting day) and I already feel so much better.

    Both of you want to be ‘fit and fabulous’ when you are 60 — a good goal. I am 68 and my MD can’t get over how healthy I am! Part of that is genetics, but part is being slim. I went for a re-eval at the Wellness Center [first re-eval in 10 years of membership], and the Trainer said, “Seriously, how do you do it? You have lost weight and gained stamina in 10 years while most people get plumper and slower!”

    You can do it, and you have begun the process.
