  • Hi there. I’m new to this diet and have a few questions. On the 2 days where I am only allowed 500 calories – what if I end up eating 600 – does that mean it is now classified as one of the 5 days? Thanks for your help. K

    Hi Kaz,
I’d just say whoops! and still call it a fast day! In fact, when I began on 5:2 I was eating closer to 700 calories on fast days. 5:2 still worked! I just kept at it until I worked out how to keep it below 500 (soups were my answer!).
So well done you on your fast day!
    Best wishes

Kaz, I had a day like that yesterday, ended with about 650-700. It slows things a bit but still works. I’ve lost over a pound since Sunday. If I realise I’m going to end up over target cals eg because I’m too hungry to manage, I try to have protein and fat, not carbs, as that’s more satisfying so I won’t go far over, and it won’t raise my blood sugar and insulin so much (fat is important for that as lean protein eg chicken will raise insulin). So maybe a small boiled egg (74 cals) or some hot milk (half a cup, 73 cals) mixed with hot water, very satisfying, or similar of almond milk, 30 cals. The egg is better as there is some carb in the milks, but sometimes they are more satisfying psychologically in the evening. Or soup, as Cinque says.

I also try, on the day after I’ve gone over, not to eat till lunch time, which just extends the fast day a bit. But that may not suit you.

Thanks Cinque for your support. What sort of soups do you eat?

Hi Apricot. Great advice. I can manage really well without eating in the mornings. Its the evenings that are my biggest challenge as I get a bit bored and start to want to nibble on things. I will try to stick to protein. Today is my second fasting day this week so fingers crossed I get through ok.

Good Morning, I am completely new to this and I am just starting to read thru all the material available. Question I have is, is it better to start this with fast day or normal or doesn’t it matter?
