  • So I started last Tuesday. Just had a quick weigh in, in the same clothes 6 days on, and i’ve lost all of 1LB.
I Absolutely stuck to under 500 cals on my 2 fasting days (Tues and Thursday) last week.
    I am fasting again today.
On my non fast days I stuck to my TDEE except for a meal with friends Saturday evening which I couldn’t count as she had cooked for us – and it was 3 courses although pudding was fruit salad, I also had about a bottle of wine. (I had kept my lunch to 200cals though)

I really expected the first week to have a BIG loss with water retention etc.
I did weigh in on Saturday morning and I’d lost 5 lbs then, so have I really put on 4lbs with one big meal?

    Hello salli1981.

Firstly well done! Deciding and actually starting to change the way in which you eat & sticking to it is half the battle.

Think about what you actually want from this change – do you want to say I am now a number – say 10 stone 3
or do you actually want to be able to say I look and feel healthier and slimmer and fit into nice clothes.

Hopefully it’s the latter which means you DON’T WANT to lose weight – you WANT to lose FAT!

Fat is light and takes up a lot of space – 1lb of fat is about the size of a coffee mug!
Muscle on the other hand is dense and 1lb muscle is the size of a small bit of steak.

You could be a lean svelt uk size 10 but weigh 12 stone cause it’s all made of muscle.
Or you could weigh 10 stone 8 and be a bit chubby and squidgy by comparison to the other person.

All the food you eat contains water, anything you drink contains water – you put it in your gob & you wee n poo it out – your weight could fluctuate by 1 – 4lbs within 1 day.
So don’t worry about 1 big meal or the idea of losing ‘water weight’.

As you lose fat the numbers on the scales will go down – but don’t worry too much about that, a better way to measure your progress is to take body measurements – they do record a few on here, but add neck, bust, upper arm, waist, bum, thighs n calfs should help.

You could also try having a goal item of clothing you used to fit in to / that you bought to fit into – again this a much better measurement of your progress. Who cares what number is on the scales if you can get your hot butt back into your favourite jeans is all that really matters.

You could get electronic scales boots / argos / amazon for £12 – £20 – £60 however much you want to spend – these will tell you your weight, your water % your fat %

So don’t worry to much about the weight, you want your fat % to go down and possibly your water% to go up a little.

Keep going cause you seem to have started in the right direction!

    Well said Suzi.

It is worth pointing out that the average weight loss for women on 5:2 is 1lb per week. It often comes off faster as people soon become mindful of what they are eating on other days and start to choose healthier options and cutting out processed carbs and sugary foods.

Fluctuations on the scales do not mean that fat has been lost or gained. It will come off if you stick to the plane but you need to be patient and look at the overall trend not what the scale says every morning. It is the reason why I only weigh my myself once per week.

Did you weigh yourself at the same time of the day on each occasion? Your weight can easily vary by 2-3 pounds during the course of a day. Drink a bottle of water and you will weigh 1 pound more. Go to the toilet and errr you can be 1 pound lighter.

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning when you get out of bed (without clothes as that introduces too much of a variable). On average you will lose about 1-2 pounds per week. On the assumption that your TDEE is say 2000 cal, your two days of 500cal means you are short 3000cal for the week. That is only a real weight loss of 0.7 pounds per week. You will lose a little bit of water as well so about 1 pound is it. That is on the assumption that you don’t eat over your TDEE, which you indicated you did do. There is no magic involved but done properly it does work.

    Good luck.

Salli, your body will reshape itself even when the scale stays the same….because you are losing fat (and inches). Have you taken a good set of measurements?

I currently weigh around 124. I started this new way of life at around 130-131. The last time I was 124, my clothes did not fit me the way they do now. I can tell that THIS 124 is a ‘less fat’ 124. My blouses don’t pull, the muffin top is GONE. Hang in there.

Thank you all so much! I was expecting you all to say I’d done something wrong, but actually it’s really very supportive what you’ve said, and I think I understand it!
It’s very different from my last weight loss plan which was the Cambridge diet! I lost 3 stone in 4 months, and was at my absolute happiest in size, health, exercise (I was running 10Km races). then I got pregnant again, and now my daughter is 4.5 and I just haven’t been able to motivate myself. It’s not baby weight anymore – it’s pure greed!!!

Hello! I am 66 with bad back and knees. Suffered from very bad overall health which caused me to be bedridden for 3 years. Since May 2014, I changed my entire lifestyle, particularly diet and lost 113 lbs (from 365 to 252), got off all meds but thyroid and blood pressure, learned to walk and drive again, etc. Then last October, I hit a plateau and no matter what I did or my diet doctor suggested, not only did I not lose any more weight, but gained back 13 lbs. Last Sunday, the 10th, I started this diet choosing Sundays and Wednesdays as my fast days. On my feast days, I have been keeping calories between 1700 and 2000 and have one day per week where I literally eat what I want and don’t count the calories. went to a Chili Cookoff at church on Sat night and had several bowls, some cornbread, and many desserts. As of this morning, I am down 8 lbs, none of which was water weight as I have been “dieting” for 2 years and take a diuretic for congestive heart failure. I have a little-active lifestyle with some walking and light exercise. I contribute my success this past week to adding 5-10 cups of non-starchy veggies a day to my meals, use under 9 oz animal protein per day, add a few healthy fats in oils, nuts and seeds, little dairy, few if any processed foods, and low-glycemic fruits, grains and beans in modest amounts. Then throw in a cookie here, a bowl of ice cream there with no deprivation and I have finally got this weight moving again! I have no doubt that it will slow down, but in the past lost 5 – 10 lbs a month and was very satisfied. The non-scale victories were too numerous to count. Hang in there. Keep positive. And keep a record of your successes. Luck to all!

Well 2 days on, and I can see 2 clear days now when I’ve not fluctuated and my actual weight loss is around 5lbs! ok so yesterday was a fast day and now I have 5 non fast days in a row, but I’m feeling MUCH better!
Thanks for all of your help!!!! I have also lost an inch on waist, hips and bust!

    Yay! Keep on keepin’ on!

WOW Chrisrod — good for you!! What a huge accomplishment – you must feel amazing. I too have a similar story – have been overweight since highschool (will be 50 yrs old in June this year) and have struggled with weight all my life. June 2014 was diagnosed with pre-diabetes (type 2) and high blood pressure. Immediately did a drastic lifestyle change (cut out almost all carbs and started exercising every day – first with water aerobics and have now moved to I hour of cardio dance on “land” a week). I lost about 50-55 pounds and then all of a sudden – nothing for over 8-9 months – scale goes up a pound or two …down a pound or two. Have been referred to other doctors. Seems the only option that keeps popping up is gastric bypass — I’m not interested. Then I saw the news story the other week and thought …hmmmm….I should look into this. Started the 5:2 (fasting 500 calorie Mond/Thursday) and so far am LOVING IT! I wasn’t sure I would get through my first day. Today is my 4th fast day. I weigh myself every Friday morning. Happy to report that for my first weigh-in last week the scale went DOWN! YAYAY!!! I’m hoping that this new way of life and way of thinking will keep the scale moving down for me on a consistent basis. I have about another 60 to lose before I hit my goal.

I’m happy to have found this forum for support, motivation and inspiration.

Best of luck to you as you move forward in your next chapter of life 🙂

Salli, you are in this for the long run, I wouldn’t fret about day to day fluctuations (though they can be frustrating). 1 lb loss a week seems to be pretty normal.
