  • I am in my early fifties and some years ago I injured my groin muscle. It has never healed and I regularly feel it pull just doing every day tasks. I used to do an exercise class but haven’t attended for 18 months and have become very sedentry. I am 5ft 5.5in tall and my weight is 9st 12lbs. During this time I have put weight on mainly on my waistline. My target weight is 8st 7lbs but I shall be happy if I get to 9st.

I do go walking sometimes, but I cannot walk fast due to the muscle injury. Can anyone suggest what I could do to fix the muscle injury so that I can do some aerobic exercise?

It would not be wise to offer exercise advice under such circumstances, and I suggest you see your GP for an assessment and most likely a referral to a physiotherapist.

    Hi Jasmine33,
    So frustrating!
    I can’t help, except echoing Amazon’s advice.

But I just want to let you know that forced inactivity, due to chronic illness in my case (me/cfs), led to my weight gain too. Being unable to exercise has not stopped 5:2 from working really well for me. I am close to my healthy weight now, and it is a wonderful relief. I was about 30kg overweight at my worst (that is 66lbs overweight).

So even if it takes you a while to work out how you can exercise again, plug away with 5:2 and you should still lose that excess weight and feel so much better.

Thank you for your advice. My experience with physio has not been good, usually end up worse off, but I shall bear your advice in mind.

    Hi Cinque

    Thank you for your reply.

I too have a chronic health condition and wonder if that causes my muscles to be weaker than they should be. My condition is haemochromatosis.

I feel quite positive about the diet. I am waiting for the book to arrive so that I can get started and hopefully I shall be as successful as you.

    Hi Jasmine:

There is no need to wait for the book. Here is what you need to begin and be successful on 5:2: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

This site has all of the information you will need – just look around a bit and you will be amazed at the volume of information that is here.

    Good Luck!

    Hi Simcoeluv

Many thanks for the link. I shall have a look at that.

Jasmine53, have you thought about swimming? Water is a great way to get back into exercise. You don’t have to go mad, but a few gentle laps of a pool is a wonderful way of getting fitter and your body moving. You don’t even need to use your legs but could just use arms. Even if you can’t swim, walking in water can help. If you feel up to it and have been cleared by the professionals aquafit is a great social way to exercise and have fun. The great thing about exercising in water is the support it gives the body, you are much less likely to suffer from muscle pain (been going 2 years and have never felt more than pleasantly tired muscles even after really pushing myself).

Hi NeaZ, I had not thought about swimming but agree with you about not using legs. I have usually gone for fast aerobic exercise not only to keep fit but to keep me interested.

I shall have to look at my local pool, thank you for that suggestion.

Aqua is great fun, my pool also has a sauna and steam room. I tend to go early and have a sauna and finish with another, it justifies my membership…

I like the steam room experience. I don’t belong to a health club as I couldn’t justify the price. My husband and I had considered joining a club last year and then decided against it because we were not sure how much we would use it. Your suggestion of swimming has prompted us to reconsider joining. I think they do aqua classes as well. I must look into this.

I don’t know where you live, does your local authority run a pool/gym? I am Peterborough UK. My membership costs me £39 on the 1St each month. If I paid per session it would cost me £8 for a class and swim, sauna would be extra on top. I go at least 3 times a week so for me it’s a no banner! I am on a very limited budget so I also look on it as social outings as well. There’s a gaggle of us that meet in sauna before and after class for a good chat….. You never know who you will meet in the sauna. Today it was a pilates teacher/nutritionist and a cage fighter!

I am in Shrewsbury UK. There are a number of swimming pools I could attend, need to see if they do an aqua fit class. I shall look to see what the club has to offer and see what suits me best.
