  • Hello all! I’ve been a long time lurker for well over a year off and on but have finally signed up tonight and decided to ask your advice.
Similar story here to lots of you…. I’m 43 with a BMI of 31. I’ve yoyo dieted since I was 18. Ranging from 9st 6lb to 14st 10lb! Never maintained a diet and to be honest over last few years can’t really summon enthusuasm to start one.
I’m thoroughly fed up of being over weight and the lack of will power to stick to a diet has left me feeling demoralised.
I saw my gp last week and he said (as we all know really) that diets don’t work etc etc but he would recommend IF as its a life style and huge health benefits.
Trouble is…. I’m still finding it hard to get started. I’m still in the frame of mind that I’ll fail again!! I’ve had a go at a fast day about 4/5 times over the last year and not managed the full day. I think partly lack of planning but also the self destruct button. I have a tendency to binge a little too.
I feel like I’m defeating myself before I start if that makes sense?
I just wondered if anyone has any advice? Anyone felt the same?
    Huge thanks for reading this!!

Hi Toothfairy, I’m planning on starting this week and have decided to play it low key as I know people will roll their eyes and tell me I’m mad. I thought I’d eat little during the day and enjoy the majority of my calories at dinner time. I suspect water on our diet day will become our BFFs and if we put a touch of lemon in it we’ll be treating our livers too. Good luck, today is my first diet day, so fingers crossed.

    Hi Toothfairy,
I wonder if you are are loading 5:2 with all your hopes and dreams… and fears.
Do your best to keep it simple.
All you are doing is one day where you don’t eat more than 500 calories.
And then another one later in the week.
Don’t make it any more than that. Try it and see how you feel.
    Good luck!

Hey I got replies! Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚
Kiwi…… How are you doing today? What do you plan to eat?
Clinique….. You’ve probably just hit the nail on the head in a couple of sentences. I’ve massively over complicated things it seems. I think you’re both right…. Low key and simple?

    Hello toothfairy29-
I want to encourage you to start this diet! I am 50 years old and have dieted on and off for many years. I started this diet on November 4th 2015 and have successfully lost 10lbs and I am now at my goal weight. before this I had lost 7 lbs in the last year just watching very carefully what I eat and exercising. So the Fast Diet shows success much more quickly and I feel great! This diet is the first one that really works and feels like I can maintain it indefinitely. The first few fast days were really hard, but I promise you they do get much easier! At first, I fasted on days I didn’t work, but now I prefer working days instead of weekends to fast because the pain of hunger is gone and I keep distracted at work so the day flies by! I found low calorie soup at 5-6pm and early to bed helped at the beginning. A three egg white breakfast and green tea throughout the day got me through the hard days too! Good luck!

    Don’t be afraid, for one 5:2 isn’t a diet, it’s a pattern of eating.

If you haven’t already I suggest you read the book “Fast Diet” and read the FAQ through the link at the top of the page. Read the forums.

5:2 is easy. Wake up don’t eat. Drink plenty of liquids stay well hydrated at some point during the day consume 400/500 calories female/male. I found consuming all my calories in the evening helped me sleep better. Go to bed wake up and resume eating while staying within your TDEE. That’s it it’s that easy.

I suggest adhering to the the 5:2 without any changes for at least two months before making any changes or tweaking to form the habit of the new pattern of eating. Then you can experiment with changes to make the 5:2 pattern your own, I suggest small changes and don’t lose focus. If the change doesn’t work or fit go back to strict 5:2.

You can do this. You’re gonna love the new you.

Hi Toothfairy, we’re in a different time zone over here in Kiwiland so I’ve had an apple at midday and some blueberries mid afternoon. For dinner tonight, 2 hours away, I have a few veg that I plan to stirfry; mushrooms, courgettes, tomato, capsicum and spring onions in garlic and Olive Oil. I don’t know exactly how many calories that lot is but it should be around 400 and even if I’m over I can tell you it’s an awful lot less than I would normally consume. I’ve drunk quite a bit of water today and plan on going for a walk before dinner as my tummy is starting to growl. Good luck and don’t stress about any of this, just do what works for you, there is no pass of fail here.

Kiwi….. How did you get on?

    Hi Toothfairy

If you are worried about being hungry you can have 2 good meals for 250 calories each.
I am not sure if you are in the UK but the Glorious Skinnylicious Soups are brilliant as they are extremely filling and quiet a few of them are 220 calories for a 600ml pot!!

    https://www.gloriousfoods.co.uk/

If I am hungry I have that around 2pm and then I have the balance of 280 calories for dinner – usually a stir fry with loads of low cal veg and some prawns thrown in.

It is just a matter of trial and error until you find what suits you best. Good luck

Thanks for that! Those soups look good!!!

I’ve actually taken the leap today and trying a fast day. So far just had small bowl of plain porridge at lunch time. Not really feeling hungry just a bit “lost”? If that makes sense!!

Well done for starting just don’t forget to work out your TDEE for the non fast days so you don’t go over otherwise it will effect your weight loss. Also drinks lots of water as it does take the edge off your appetite. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hiya toothfairy
just wanted to congratulate you on taking that first step. Well done. I think the lost feeling may be due to missing the structure of mealtimes? Maybe substitute something else into your day? I have just started and am on my 8th FD today. I am very excited about making this lifestyle change. Looking forward to a weigh in next week….
Take JFs tip about the water as I drink heaps on FD and it seems to workโ˜บ
