Giving it a go

  • My weight’s been bugging me for years, a colleague mentioned this diet to me today so figured it wouldn’t hurt to try.

    Around 8 years ago I made the mistake of getting really obsessed about 3lb that I had to lose to get into the “healthy” range of my BMI after doing well to lose over 24lb in the first place. I’d managed to lose the weight using the old fashioned method of eating less rubbish and exercising lots. As a result I was quite muscular but was quite happy with the way I looked especially given how I looked before. No matter what I did I couldn’t lose this last 3lb and ever since then my weight has crept up and up.

    I’ve tried calorie counting and such but find I’m getting really fed up logging absolutely everything I eat. I figure I’d better make an effort sooner rather than later as I used to enjoy outdoor hobbies such as hillwalking. These days I struggle to do much in the way of hills.

    I’m hoping to get back into UK size 10 trousers, I’m not really bothered what I weigh.

    Well today was my first fast day, so far it’s panned out reasonably well (minus any late night disasters).

    I went swimming before work and swam 40 lengths in the 30mins I had then floated about and stretched for a further 10mins. This leads me to a question about whether or not exercise should be factored in? I didn’t today but it never occurred to me to check.

    The question of ‘eating back’ exercise calories comes up every once in awhile. The answer is that your exercise is included in your TDEE computation and so you do not ‘eat back’ any ‘exercise’ calories. There are many, many other reasons not eat back exercise calories, but the TDEE answer is enough.

    Have weighed myself and currently weighing in at a shocking 203lb for someone 5’2″ tall. I’d be happy enough to get to 140lb as that was roughly what I was the last time I was happy with the way I looked even though it was technically in the “unhealthy” BMI range.

    Have managed 3 fast days now with the last one being yesterday. What was even better was I’m pretty sure I burned more than my 500cals doing an early morning swim (30min and 50 lengths) and an evening dog walk (2 hours covering mountain bike trails). Definately noticing more firmness in my arms and legs since I took up my exercise routine. The test today will be a hike into the Arrochar alps though we don’t intend to hike the full way up any of the hills at the moment (ice and snow + a dog that pulls on her lead = disaster).

    Is there anyone else just starting out that might like to keep an eye on each others threads for inspiration?
