  • Hi, My names Emma and Im 22 years old. I have been overweight for as far back as I can remember and at my heaviest weighed about 16 stone sat sobbing in a changing room. I have lost two stone over many years and have managed to get my weight down to 12st at one point however Id like to get back down again to this to feel healthy and happy again. Im willing to help others and would also like a buddy to generally talk to about how my weeks are going. Feel free to message me. Thanks.

Good luck Emma! I get the impression that quite a few of the posters on here are middle-aged or older, but there are lots of good tips whizzing around.

I’m a 42-yr-old mum of two, so maybe not an ideal fasting buddy, but happy to add a bit of encouragement when it’s needed.

Looking back, I spent a lot of my 20s and 30s feeling like I didn’t deserve to love/value/nurture myself because I was fat. I put a lot of things on hold until some day when I would be the weight I ‘ought’ to be, which of course never arrived. 20 years of yo-yo dieting later, I wish I’d spent time working out ‘why’ I had issues with looking after myself and sticking to a healthy way of eating, rather than chasing after ‘how’ to lose weight. So please don’t save feeling healthy and happy until you’re a lower weight – you’re lovely already and deserve to live every day to the full!

The other thing that came as a shock (but maybe only to me) was that many friends that I thought were so glamorous and lovely and slim actually hated themselves as well, and were often desperately unhappy. We each of us need to unpick the ball of complicated reasons that make us feel the way we do – or we just keep repeating the same behaviour forever…
