  • Hi everyone I’m new here and have been officially fasting for a few weeks now with positive results?. I wanted to discuss a secret I have had for many years and see if anyone else experienced anything similar. When I was a younger woman (mid thirties now?) I used to fast once a week usually on a Saturday before a night out as I found with shopping, getting ready and the night out itself distracted me completely from food. I did a water fast and then ate whatever I wanted all week. I always felt great and kept a slim figure (a very nice figure actually?) but I kept it secret as I was sure it would have been seen as an eating disorder. I certainly didn’t see it this way as I have never had any issues with food or body image and genuinely felt great for fasting feeling more energised and “clean” afterwards, I did eventually after few years stop due to changes in my life but started again in my early 20s but then stopped again for good, again this was due to being seen as having an issue as once your spending your evenings with someone it’s hard to explain why your not eating. When I saw the horizon documentary I was amazed and it just confirmed to me that I was doing something good and my body was responding by making me feel great! I did start fasting again but stopped while pregnant and breastfeeding but now I plan to live my life by this, I am currently doing 2 water fasts a week while I lose the last bit of “baby” (or chip) fat and then will do 1 a week for life (except holidays maybe?). I do feel that I am good at listening to my body and that’s what I was doing all those years ago. Just wanted to hear your thoughts on this.

Hi, I never thought about it until now, but I did what you did many, many years ago. If I was going out on a date and knew we’d be eating a feast type dinner, I just drank, coffee, water and diet sodas all day until dinner. I never even realized I was fasting until your post! I just didn’t want to gain weight, and I was a lot thinner back then.

40 years later, and I’ve decided to do 5:2. I did it for a short while two years ago, and it does work, but now I realize that it’s just not another diet to go on and off.

Funny how I never realized all that refraining from eating many years ago were really fasts!

Oh wow, at last I can come out of the closet! I agree that fasting and not overloading myself with food I feel so much better.
However, 40 years ago when I was a young mother I used to do 2 day water fasts but then became afraid of food. I thought I was fat when I was thin and became bulimic. Of course I got ill and recovered. I am now cautious but a lot older and wiser and am finding this suits me down to the ground. I never get really hungry, listen to my body and it tells me when I need to eat.
I count calories without realising it! My excess has been caused partly by bad food choices but mainly by wine (all those empty calories)!!
I kept slim for many years and am dying to get slim again.
I did love being young in the 70’s.

What I was really trying to say was this is like coming home to me. Back to normal. I am so relieved.

Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one, sorry it did lead to some issues for you Beverley but you sound all good now?, like you say I think the key is to listen to your body, the better we treat it the more we can hear it And I personally think suger and processed foods break a lot of the signals in our body and that’s how people end up a mess.
