  • Hi everyone

Started the 5:2 plan yesterday. It was on another site but didn’t seem to have a forum for support. I’m feeling really positive. Yesterday I had a ‘normal’ eating day, today is a fast. I’m just a little confused – am I supposed have 25% of my TDEE or 500 calories on a fast day? I’ve only has a slice of dry toast so far but don’t want to go over the calorie intake. Any advice would be appreciated?

It maybe early days but it doesn’t feel like a diet. I was considering the Lighter Life diet and was on the verge of signing up but I thought that means I can’t even go out for dinner on Saturday evening. We are away bank holiday so I would have to take their meal plans with me. I want something that I can adapt into my life so I will stick to it. I can’t believe there is a diet out there where I can set the restrictions! Probably that’s why it seems to work for so many people out there

Has anyone else just started on the 5:2? Looking forward to hearing all your experiences.

    Hi and welcome.

500 calories is 25% of the “average woman” intake of 2000 calories. It is a good place to start and can be tweaked as you see fit. I’ve stuck to it without any changes and it has worked well for me but those with a very low TDEE often reduce it to 25% of whatever that is.
The key is not over eating on non fast days by remembering you can eat whatever you want but not as much as you want. Staying within your TDEE is essential if you want to lose weight.

Most of those doing 5:2 will tell you it isn’t a diet but a way of life as it enables you to make permanent beneficial changes to your eating habits without feeling deprived. Anything that involves cutting out certain foods completely and reducing calories drastically on a daily basis is unsustainable and does not eliminate bad habits. 5:2 is slow and steady and it works 😛

    Good luck.

Thank you Amazon for your advice. If I worked it out on my TDEE then I only have 400 cals so I will start with 500 and adjust it if I don’t lose any weight. I have spent the last year overeating then doing the James Duncan ‘Lose a stone in a week’ diet in between. It’s not a healthy way to live, this is so much better like you say ‘what you want’ not ‘how much’ you want.

Have you been pretty successful yourself on this plan?

Yes, I’ve lost nearly five stones. Life gets in the way sometimes but on the whole it is an easy plan to follow as fast days can be moved to accomodate social events. I only eat lunch and dinner and just dinner on fast days which works well for me as once I start eating I want to continue which is a problem that most of us seem to have.
I’ve just had a few days away staying with friends and successfully managed to stick to two meals per day, and lunch was usually cake!

I fail to see how anyone can lose a stone in a week as it takes a deficit of over 3000 calories to lose a pound. Diets like that don’t do us any good and I have tried far too many of them only to regain the weight and more.I’ve finally found a way to lose weight and change my habits and I’ll be following 5:2 forever.

    Hi Poppet and welcome:

Here is some information that might help: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Welcome to fast diet, I have been doing the 5:2 for 3 weeks now, and lost 4 pounds but also inches, feel good about this way of eating, FDs are Monday and Friday, this week I did Wednesday too, feel good about myself, my family is noticing my weight loss, yeah. Good luck and keep fasting!

Thank you – I will take a look.

    Hi peruvian22

That is great. I hope I do as well as you. This is my first fasting day. I thought it was going to be a doddle but I have been tempted by so many things. My partner came in with a bottle of wine – but I have said no. I have had so many cravings! The saving grace is I know it is only for a day. It is making me think that I will be good on my non-fasting days otherwise I will spoil what I have achieved today.

Hi, I’m new to this diet as well. Just starting [again] after having lost 26 pounds and now gained it all back[so disappointing]. I’m not finding where people talk about what to eat that is filling but not high in calories. Can someone please tell me where to look for this?

    Hi Realtor and welcome:

The way 5:2 works is by eating only 500 calories twice a week you cut a significant number of calories out of your diet and lose weight as a result. On diet days, many find eating one 500 calorie meal in the evening high in fat/protein works best.

On 5:2 you can eat what ever you want as long as you eat 500 on your diet days and your TDEE or less on your non diet days. The number of calories in the food you choose to eat matters not, as long as the total meets the guidelines.

    Here are some tips: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the welcome and link for the newbies. Question for you…Does the total amount of calories you can have depend on the exercise you do that day? For instance if I bike ride and burn an extra 300 calories can I then have 800 calories? Thanks in advance for the info. on this.

    Hi Realtor:

    A very common question.

You cannot eat back your exercise calories.

Your TDEE includes exercise, so eating back will cause ‘double eating’.

There are many other reasons why eating back kills this or any other diet, but I guess I would ask myself why I would want to maximize the number of calories I can eat when on a weight loss diet? What is the goal, to lose weight or eat as much as possible while on the diet?

Remember, the more you eat, the less you lose.

    Good Luck!

    Great advice. Makes sense. Thanks.

Hello everybody, is the weekend and the weather is great here, I had a hard time yesterday , it was my third FD of this week, and my family decided to go out to eat for dinner, had sushi, no alcohol, but I think, I ate more than my 500 cal allowance, oh well, I did an extra FD, feeling better anyway, looking forward to my weigh in next week. How is everybody else doing today, Poppet-Pandy, you will do it, keep the determination and you will see the weight go down, was nice to connect, take care!
Realtor lady, keep doing it, keep exercising if not for weight loss, for well being, its good for your body, the 5:2 will help with weight loss and health!
Happy to be part of this forum. Have a great day everybody, enjoy your weekend and keep fasting!

    Hi everyone
Well yesterday went well. The weather was nice today. I went out with my daughter and 2 small grandsons to the park and then we had dinner out. I went back to hers and after they went to bed out came a bar of chocolate and then 2 glasses of wine. This is a great diet I thought – have the things you enjoy!

Anyway to cut a long story short I came home to ‘tot-up’ the calories and its 200 over my TDEE. So I decided to look again at my TDEE and it varies. If I take it as I do light exercise then I get 1797 cals or if I put in sedentary then I get 1550 cals. If I work it out on light activity then I am within my limit but am I fooling myself?
How you all doing this evening?
    How’s everyone
