  • Hi All (and particularly newbies wondering whether or not this works),
45 year old female, height 5 6ish, starting weight at new year72.4kg, current weight 62.3kg.
I know a lot of people find losing weight hard but I’ve found it perturbingly easy (to the extent that I began to wonder if there was something wrong with me. There isn’t!).
So I’ve been thinking about why it’s easy for me but hard for some. I think I’ve been ‘lucky’. I don’t have any underlying medical conditions.
This way of eating (fasting 5:2 and mostly eating 16:8) suits me. So if you aren’t naturally an early morning eater then fasting is easier.
Also, I don’t really have a sweet tooth. So my ‘problem’ was not sweets/cakes/biscuits/chocolate but just a generalized overeat (and Lake District extra mature cheddar!).
Fasting (but still preparing normal meals for hubby) has shown me my secret eating habits. And it has re-educated my eating habits – I now naturally eat smaller quantities (non fast days), and avoid carbs because they just don’t appeal any more (too sugary sickly), and recognise when I’m full and stop eating now (brought up to clean my plate, regardless of whether or not it was an appropriate amount of food!). So I’m a lot more mindful now.
And the weight loss is only part – improved menstruation, hair, skin, cognition, etc.
So this can work. But, like anything, this does depend on you. It’s not a quick fix. It’s a lifestyle change. Commit. Be honest. Stick with it. It will work.

    Hiya HappyNow & All,
35 year old female, height 5 4, starting weight at August 2012 210lb (ish), current weight (2 weeks ago) 154lb.

I totally agree with all of your points above and agree that mindfulness and self awareness on non-fasting days as well as fasting days are the most important aspects of the WOE. I too had no major underlying medical issues but I did have a couple of things (mostly connected to hormones) that were almost instantly cured or improved by the fasting aspect of the WOE. I’ve also always had ‘high end of normal’ blood pressure, which is now bang on perfect.

The only thing I would add is that, it may not be the ideal and probably has stopped me losing weight at a consistently swift pace but I DO have a sweet tooth. I probably eat more chocolate per (nonfast) day than I did before this WOE to be honest. I also still eat bread (pittas & naan mostly), cake etc. and I tend to make meals from scratch a couple of times a month and portion them up as ready meals but I do also still use jars of ready made sauces etc. and I have had more takeaway meals in the past 2 years than I had in the previous 4 put together.

If you KNOW you are not a ‘make it from scratch’, Organic aisle foody with a perfect record of nutrition. DO NOT DISPAIR – this WOE IS still for you. You just need to accept that the loss might take longer, you have to take responsibility for what you put in your mouth and what it means to your goals and you do probably need to get busy checking the calorie content on those labels & jars and making damn sure you are aware of roughly what you are taking in on non-fastdays as well as EXACTLY what you are taking in on fastdays.
