  • We don’t mind that the Eagles won, since it was their first. My sister is Philly isn’t gloating. Funny how some of you have a Philly connection, even from across the world.
I’m 95% all better after last week’s undiagnosed illness. ODH still under the weather.
One nice side effect of being ill is that I finally broke out of my plateau and dropped to the bottom of my Target Zone. Always a relief. Now I have to stay there…

Snow is falling as fast as it can and looking lovely. We’ll stay inside all snug and cosy. Might get 12″.

    Fasting tomorrow.

Glad you’re almost better, fasting. Hopefully your OH will be soon. While we are gearing up for our trip to Princeton and Philadelphia city break, our friends are off to New Zealand, to their son. Another example of how small the world is now.

I’ve had to go back to a fairly organised 5:2 pattern, as I was firmly stuck on top wriggle room, ok – even just over. Portion creep did it, plus not taking note of satiation, if there is such a word. Oh, plus quite a bit of wine being taken. This Six Nations is a test! Wales had a marvellous game, beating the resurgent Scotland on Saturday. Main rivals England this week. Another story!

Time to look at Mimi’s book and choose today’s meal. 🥗🥙

I’m doing alternate day fasting this week Poll to get my satiation trigger working again. I’m also rethinking the foods I ate 5 years ago when I started this. 😊 Cutting out the carbs and increasing the veg.
    Pity about Scotland 😑😑

I had a real hard time rooting for either team in the super bowl. I’m a Giants fan so I really hate the Eagles. But I also have no love for the Pat’s. I guess it’s OK for the Eagles to get one every 50 years or so just like the sox. LOL

Maintenance is going OK except I guess I’m really not in maintenance! I have this 6 sigma thing going where I want continuous improvement. My BF% was a new low today @ 15.6% and my scale weight is about the same @ 160lbs. I’ve very happy with that.

I did an assessment for Gymnastic Strength Training today and ever though I’m very fit for a 67 year old I found out I have a lot of work to do. I’m not doing gymnastics, just using the training techniques for mobility, balance and strength.

    Hi Diver
I’m a similar age to you, and despite leading an active life, my muscles are significantly weaker. I don’t want to do the gym thing…strikes me as an unnatural waste of time and money…a bit like paying someone to lose weight instead of eating less 😉…but it IS hard to incorporate whole body workouts in everyday life. Inevitably I injure myself when I do an irregular maintenance task. It was never a problem when I was younger. P

Need to report a fabulous meal last night – prawn jambalaya! It’s the first from a recipe book by Kate Harrison, which we’ve had for a while, but not used as it’s a bit disorganised.

I’m finding it really hard to keep to 500 calories, though. Keeping busy and being out helps to distract, but it’s soooo damn cold here just now.

Crunch game tomorrow- main rivals, England with their big-mouth Aussie coach, Eddie Jones trying to psych the team out again. Good fun, with Warren Garland and his laconic responses! Alcohol compulsory tomorrow! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏉🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Hi Polly,

It’s been very cold here too this week, dropping to -6 one night – I actually stuck my fingers to the outside of a metal door that morning! Luckily we only had snow for 48 hours, pretty but inconvenient.

I’ve struggled to fast too, although I did skip an evening meal one night (OH didn’t let me know he was stuck in traffic and by 9.30 I’d lost the urge to eat!), and the resulting 24 hour fast (I only made it til lunch the next day!) seems to have done the job re-setting appetite and portion control.

I’ll be watching the rugby at home, so the urge for daytime drinking should hopefully be controllable! And anyway, I’ve not found anywhere locally that sells Brains 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Just lost a post again! Enjoy tomorrow, Happy!

    Ooo…poor Eddie! I hear he’s having success. 😉
My appetite has definitely been reset with alternate day fasts…long may it last 😊 P

As sad is it is to hear about everyone struggling with extra pounds, it is reassuring to know that we all go through the same thing. Our wide-spread geographic diversity puts to bed my assumption that there was a higher ‘winter weight’ and a lower ‘summer weight.’ Purple is having summer, while Polly & I are in winter. Diverdog, I’m guessing you are from the NYC metro region? Happy, you must be having winter too. Good job, all of you, on keeping the pounds at bay and whipping yourselves back into shape.

Glad that Polly, Happy, and Purple are enjoying the rugby. I’m an Olympics junkie.
Diver, I get the 6-Sigma wish to do better and better, but at our age there is a limit. That said, increasing strength and flexibility are excellent things to do.
PVE: try the 7-minute Fitness app. At home, works on major muscle groups, works as hard as you want or lets you work into more serious exercise. Easier than going to gym.
Polly, I’ve got to find that Prawn Jambalaya recipe. We want to have jambalaya for dinner on Fat/Shrove Tuesday, but I can’t find a recipe with a low enough calorie count. Have finagled one down to 316 calories/serving…. It doesn’t help that I’m not keen on rice.

    Happy Week-end.

Fasting_me, & PVE I’m from Henderson, right outside Las Vegas. We have had a warmer than usual winter. The daytime temps have been in the 60’s and the last two weeks we hit the low 70’s. Night time in the high 40’s. Of course it’s sunny just about every day, one of the big reasons I moved here.

At 67 I know my potential for maximum performance is not close to what it was in my 20’s & 30’s but I know I’m nowhere near what my limits are now. I’m concentrating on mobility, cardiovascular health and retaining muscle mass. I’m not a big gym guy but I usually discipline myself to go to use the spin bike and weights. My health insurance pays for the gym membership. The gymnastic strength training I’m starting can mostly be done at home with little or no equipment. So far it has been very humbling.

Pollypenny, the jambalaya sounds delicious! I love creole cooking and I haven’t had it in a long time.

Fasting, it was 358 calories, which is a lot for a FD, really. Delicious, though. If it wasn’t a FD I’d have been mopping up sauce with bread!

We’re eating out tonight. I’m crossing fingers for something decent.

Oh, diverdog, I envy you the Warmth! Winter visits to son when he lived in Florida were wonderful!

    F_me,

I think you’ve misunderstood my post, I’m struggling to fast in the cold (I’m in north west England, mid winter) but I’m not struggling to maintain. Currently 2lbs under ‘alarm bells’ weight 😀 Mind you, it’s not always this easy!

I think fasting when you’re cold is very challenging and although it’s been over 35 degrees here now for a few days in a row, I know soon enough the cold will be here and I’ll be trying not to feel warmer by eating!

Purple, I did a complete reset a couple of months ago now. I still stayed at one fast day a week but went back to what I’d been eating when I started 5:2 and religiously recorded everything I ate to see where the calorie creep was happening.

What i found by doing that was I increased my veg intake, reduced portion size and as a side effect the sugar craving appears to be subsiding.

It’s taken a long while for my brain to get the message about sugar. It still hadn’t realised something sweet doesn’t have to be my treat of choice, but I think finally, finally it’s getting the message.

Breaking old habits is so hard!!

I joined you on that Carol. Remember? Recorded every day and definitely became more vigilant on quantity and frequency of eating. Then I changed phones and lost all that data!!!! I don’t crave sugar, but am aware of increased hunger when I’ve eaten too many carbs and when I’m very tired. ADF quickly brings the appetite back to normal and rethinking what foods I ate originally really helps. I had a DELICIOUS stuffed mushroom the other night. Haven’t had them in ages. 🤗
These days, with our cool, not freezing, winters, I find winter not too bad for maintaining weight. This summer socialising season is more a problem for me. With our beautiful weather, their are too many long outdoor eating and drinking sessions. I’ll have to become a hermit 😉😉😉
Happy maintaining folks…whenever you are. P

Good morning, all. Well, I had a calorie-free time out last night, apart from the wine, of course. I chose a veggie burger with halloumi, which initially seemed delicious. That was until I had to leap from the tab,e and run to the loos where I was sick. On reflection, I think it must have been the accompanying taziki.

Felt a bit cheated, really, as well as queasy.

So excited and nervous about the game this afternoon!

    Pol 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏉

Good job, Happy. Glad to get that straightened out.
Happy’s comment raises a question from me to all of you: how big a range is your wiggle room? By that I mean, between the weight you don’t want to fall below and the weight you don’t want to go above, how many pounds are there? When I think about my range, it is shockingly small. From my Target Weight, to the lowest I want to be = 1.5 pounds. I don’t get too upset if I am 1/2 pound above my Target [which used to be my old target], but not over.

Polly, how unpleasant! Hope the up-chuck was a one-off. Guess you won’t go to that restaurant again! Unless you want to lose some more weight.
Diver, sounds as if you are living the healthy life in Henderson. More power to you!
PVE, I’ve never done ADF, since my ODH would rebel. Although I do work Fast Dinners [<300 calories] into the Slow Day manu as often as I can. Last night it was crab cakes and they were delicious. Now I need to subdue the wish to nibble all day.

    Happy rugby.

My wriggle room is 3lbs. I’m interested to know what the rest of you do, too. Years ago, when I did the F Plan, I couldn’t stop and ended positively gaunt. 126 – 129 suits me, size 10-12 UK.

I’ve been to that restaurant many times, so it must be a one-off, still queasy.

Well I like to be around 59 kg, roughly 130 lbs. If I see 60 (132), I need to get strict, if I see 58 (127) something then I relax. So my range is I suppose 4 – 5 lbs. At 5 foot 7 it really makes no difference to how my clothes fit, but it’s good to have limits!

Polly, sorry to hear you’ve been poisoned! I always tend to think of meat as the culprit, but OH was hospitalised by rice and I’ve been ill after a falafel and cheese burger. Did you have to pay for your meal?

F_me, I’ve realised too that it’s fairly easy to eat light on non-fast days, I guess it’s called making healthy food choices!

Nope, didn’t pay for meal. However, we split the bill between three couples, so I had a very expensive glass of wine. I was a bit miffed that the others didn’t insist on OH just paying for his meal. 🤨

Ireland are walking over Italy. So one-sided that it’s boring. Hope our game is better!

Wiggle room? I’m not to concerned with daily weight changes as I can see as much as a 3 lb swing based on hydration, how much I’ve eaten and when I’ve visited the commode. I look for trends in weight and BF%

Right now I’d be pleased to see a weight increase and BF% decrease as I’m trying to build muscle

    Hi Diver,

My daily variation isn’t that great, so it is more based on long-term trend for me. It’s not so much I see 60kg once and panic, but if I’m consistently seeing 60kg or thereabouts then I know I need to be strict.

    Polly,

I agree that’s a bit rich, to split the bill 3 ways for 5 meals. You’ll be watching them next time!

Yep, I’m afraid I wandered off during the Ireland Italy match. It coincided with a break in the weather so was an opportunity to get a few things done before the main event!

    C’mon Wales 😀

    Hello everyone

Just back from a month in Melbourne – went for Niece No 1 wedding – had a fab time and enjoyed catching up with family and friends – lots of good food and 🥂🍷

Left Melbourne at 32 degrees arrived in Manchester at minus 2 and by the time I arrived in Cumbria it was a snowy wonderland!!!!!!!!!!

Happy to report that I returned weighing exactly what I weighed when I left despite only managing 2 FDs during the month but I did 16:8 days everyday and had several controlled days and several feast days so what is there not to love about this WOL – I’m in my 14th month of maintenance now and so happy to have discovered this WOL 😇

Talking about wriggle room @fasting_me I allow myself around 2kg, I know that sounds a lot but I set my target weight at 55kg and since reaching it I seem to sit happily around 52.5kg to 54.5kg without too much effort – I follow a 16:8 eating pattern every day and do 2 x FDs when home and try to do 1 a week if away from home – this allows me to enjoy some 🥂🍷 and morning tea out with OH a couple of times a week ☺️

@pollypenny – totally agree that it was a bit rich to split that bill 3 ways 🤨

@happynow – the Ireland/Italy game was a bit boring but the 2nd half Ireland played loosely allowing those 3 Italian tries – bet they got a bit a of telling off by the coach at the end! I’m hoping for a tighter match between England and Wales……

Going back to Australia in April for Niece No 2 wedding – so starting to plan next trip already – must be mad!!!

I had 58-59 as my goal, using 60 as my wiggle room weight, but I’ve decided that 58 or even 57 is where I really want to be. I’m revising my wiggle room to 59 and 58 as my target weight for now. 57 would probably not be too thin as I still have some “muffin top” with snug waisted jeans. It seems like the fat that’s remaining kind of rearranges itself after losing. Have any of you found that?

I’m doing 2 – 500 calorie FDs in maintenance. I need to be a little more mindful on NFD. I’m thinking about eating more plant based meals which would certainly help.

Diverdog, I think we all know that effect of water retention and transit issues. Thankfully, we in this thread don’t want to lose anymore weight. It’s the maintenance thread! 😉

Talking of losing, we did lose to England today. Leigh Halfpenny would have kicked those penalties I’m sure. Still, it’s only a game.

Welcome home, AT. Very well done on maintaining your weight in such a festive situation, especially over a period. And you’ll be gallivanting off again very soon, then.

CalifDreamer, my tummy is still flabby, in spite of losing 10 inches from my waist. I suppose Pilates is the answer, but at my age and post-hysterectomy I’ll live with it. Bikini days behind me.

    Pol.

Purple, I know we started that recording together and I was wondering what had changed for you! I record on paper, as every now and then I feel the urge to include a graph or something lol!

Happy, I’m same height and weight as you and with same wriggle room 😊

I’m usually between 58-59 and as long as I’m still below 60 at the beginning of FD I know everything is fine. If I go below 58 I eat a bit more that day as I don’t want to get any lower.

Sometimes I worry I’m getting a bit too thin but hearing you are the same as me Happy is reassuring. I think as a society we have just come to accept being heavier is normal and for me growing up it was actually normal to be thin! So maybe we’re the new norm! 😊
I feel now after 4 nearly 5 years of 5:2 and probably 2 years of being on maintenance I am finally starting to get the hang of it 😊

AT I wish your family lived in Adelaide, I’m always looking for someone to stay at our house when we go to visit Canada 😊

ccco USA Day 10 FD: I am not in maintenance yet but I read this forum to see what people do to maintain their weight. One question I wonder about is how often do you all do fast days to maintain your weight. It may be different for different for different people, but I am trying to get a general idea! Thanks!

I had an “anything under 60kg” goal from the beginning, 5 years ago. I reached that goal 4 years ago and continued down to 56 briefly. I realised it was too difficult to maintain. I have no bottom to my wriggle room, only the upper trigger point.
Like Happy, I also get strict if I see over 60 more than once. I’m going through that now, hence the ADF.
I’m finding my weight is barely moving, but I KNOW I’m certainly not overcompensating on non fast days, so something will shift 😉
I agree, the remaining fat does redistribute and seems to enjoy the stomach area 😑 I’m willing to dress appropriately 😊😊
Hard to know what works long term, as there are SO many variables (age, weather, social habits, activity levels, regularly reinventing the menu, seasonal availability of foods, occassional illnesses etc)
No matter what, there is no alternative to maintenance. Keep it up everyone. 😊😊😊😊 P

    Hi, all.
Coco, we normally do 16:8 every day. However, having been stuck at top of wriggle room since Christmas, we did two FDs last week. Like Happy and PVE, I think I’ve just learned to manage weight and allow for things like celebrations. Chiefly, we both learned that we don’t need three meals a day.

Found a couple of good new recipes in a Vegan/veggie book which our daughter gave us. It’s not as well laid out as Mimi’s books, but some useful calories tables too. Kate Harrison is the writer.
    No rugby celebration yesterday!

    Pol.

Poll, I used Kate Harrison’s book almost exclusively when I started 5:2 five years ago. Her calorie tables and ideal weight for height charts are very easy to regularly refer to.
I love the way she refers to toast as “the crack cocaine of food”. I know what she means when Mr P cooks toast when I’m fasting 😑😑😑 P

Yep! Toast and marmite! The smell permeates the house! 😳

Well I guess a Bison burger and overeating potato salad must be diet food because Last night I hit a new all time low for BF% @ 15.4%. Weight is holding constant at 160 lbs. It seems the hard work at the gym is paying off for muscle growth and continued fat loss!

Went out to dinner last night and ate too much. Whenever I have two glasses of wine it seems to open the flood gates. It was fine dining and I even had desert and felt nasty afterwards. It was my only meal of the day so I don’t think I did too much damage. No cravings this morning. I feel like fasting today but it’s a weight work out day so I’ll be eating a good amount of food.

For me, the smell of toast doesn’t tempt. It’s the savory or spicey ones that make my mouth water

ccco USA FD DAy 1: I Pollypenny! Thanks for your response. After a month and a half, I finally figured out how this plan works for me! I think everyone’s body is different and I was becoming frustrated as I was back on my roller coaster of weight gains and losses again! I still didn’t intent to quit, though! I just needed to make may own way within this plan. I don’t have much weight to lose and that can make the effort make difficult and slow. And who likes slow?? Getting frustrated because I suddenly was gaining my weight back, I decided to switch things up and make this a 48 hour fast weekend on top of all my work last week, which resulted in nothing! Today, however, I am celebrating a 6 lb, weight loss! Tomorrow I will do a 16:8 controlled fast and then I think I am on a roll! Just received Dr. Mosley’s book The Fast Diet, so I know what I will be doing today! Since I think I found the pattern that works for me, now I am looking forward to the health benefits I hope to have, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and anti inflammatory gains! Have a wonderful day!

ccco USA: Oops! That was FD Day 11!

So interesting to her how similar we all are in our maintenance and wiggle room ideas. Love it!

Diver, we love bison burgers too — so much better for us than ground beef. We have a couple of Fast meals involving bison. I too like to keep my BF% in the 15.4-16.0 range. Have you ever tried exercising on a Fast Day? Some people find it to be a good thing.

Ccco, enjoy reading the Fast Diet. Inspiring. Stay hydrated and doing what works — you will be maintaining with us in short order.

PVE, you mentioned height/weight charts. Haven’t read the Kate Harrison book, but I’ve always found those charts to be way too generalized. When I weighed what the chart said was ideal for me, that was when I went back to dieting! Perhaps K Harrison’s is better than that. Like Harrison, I do the calorie counts on all the items in my recipes, just so I’ll know what I’m getting. [i do fat, fiber, protein, carbs, and Calcium, too]

You know, Polly, it might not have been the restaurant: you might have caught Norovirus/stomach flu somewhere else and it expressed itself there. Did anyone else eat the tziziki? How did the rug cleaning go?

AT, good job managing food intake on your wedding journey. You must be the queen of frequent flyer miles! I once turned an airplane meal into a delicious Fast Dinner once I got home. Air Italia.

Happy, seems most of you are taller than I, hence my different weight target. Anyone else shrinking? I’m not shockingly shorter, but have lost an inch+ in the past 2 years. Working on keeping the bones strong.

Carolann, the fashion of thinness swings like a pendulum. In 1900, plump was good: said you were prosperous. In 1924, skinny was in. In 1950, ‘pleasingly plump’ meant that the privation of the Wars and Depression was behind us. In the 1960s, everyone wanted to be young and hip and slim like the Flower Children. In the 1980s/90s plump crept back in and eased up to obesity, where we are now. And most people don’t even notice!

Interesting description of weight through the ages Fasting. I agree, except for the 50s. My memory was everyone being thin. I’m horrified seeing 50s style frocks being worn by obese young women these days. You would never have seen that!
Re weight guides, Kate Harrison’s is a broad range, but an excellent general indicator. I found it a good starting point as the weight for height was correct for both me and my husband. The healthy range was the same as we had been when in our 20s…and thin 😉
We all need a good goal. I used it, created a timeline to reach it, realistically, in a year, and did. Mr P lost 30kg. I lost 25. We both continued losing in the months that followed, but have settled back at, or around, the original goal. Tells me it was our natural weight level.
I am at least 1 1/2 inches shorter than 40 years ago. Sad, but true. 😶 P

Purple Vegie Eater! I just read your post with interest! When I was younger I weighed a lot less but was 3 inches taller! I lost the inches because of a spine problem I have. I find my doctor disturbing because she seems to think my ideal weight should be the same as when I was 5 ft 6 in. I disagree! I think I should weigh what is appropriate for a 5 ft. 3 inch woman because that is what I am now! I don’t think she gets it because she is a large boned woman (I am a very small boned person) and she is 6 feet tall! LOL Everyone looks small to her!! Stay strong!

I’m with you, Coco. The calculation has to be based on current height, not an imagined past glory.
They are discussing obesity and pregnancy problems on the radio. If realistic weight charts were shown to every patient in a doctors’ office, people might start seeing themselves in the overweight or obese range. Maybe, just maybe, a few more would stop eating? ☺

Oh, that’s interesting that two of us have shrunk. I’m still 5’3”, as I’ve been since I was 12, stopped growing early.

Fasting, the carpet is almost as new. I know where to look, of course. If only it was a rug, but it’s a fitted carpet in big hall and living room. ( foyer and family room in the UsA, I suppose). I know carpets are not popular but they keep us warm.

We just ate once today. Mimi’s minestrone soup, with some bread, very filling and absolutely delicious! I just some fruit later as I wasn’t at all hungry. Just as well, my stomach upset made me crave comfort food yesterday, so I made custard! 😱

Just typed up my story for the group; it’s true about losing son’s front door key for the second time! They’ll think we’re old fools!

    Pol. 😀

    Carolann,

Yes, I’ve had those same thoughts about getting too thin! But then I was a chubby (fat!) child and was always pretty well covered as an adult before I did 5:2, so this is a different look for me. Being a bit taller, and not being an apple, I could carry a bit more, but I think I would begin to look unhealthy if I went much lower.

Very bizarre to be so in control of my weight that I can micromanage it to such a degree!

    Polly,

Wooden floors and tiles have their place, but I live in Cumbria…give me a deep pile carpet over thick underlay any day!

    F_me,

You’ve got me thinking now! I’ve got a couple of compressed discs, I wonder if I’ve lost height! Perhaps I’m kidding myself re my BMI!

Yes: ACTUAL height and actual weight give us our current BMI. I think mine is current.
I was a very skinny child, so my parents and other relatives gave me full rein to eat and over-eat. So when I started gaining at puberty, had no idea how to control appetite. 56 years later, I mostly do know how to control it.
I think those weight charts go back to the ’50s, my childhood. People were ‘thin’ in the 50s, but Marilyn Monroe was actually over-weight by many standards.

Looking at my HS yearbook, class of 1968 there where 2 obese kids in a graduating class of over 200! I weighed 162 lbs @ 5’10”. I went through a pudgy phase till I hit puberty but nowhere near obese.

Does anyone else suffer with the FD headache?

I thought they would improve over time but think mine are getting worse. Often the headache is the most challenging part of FD and I still have it the next morning but generally goes before lunch.

I drink so much water, herbal tea on FD I slosh when I walk!

Does anyone have a solution or know why this happens please?

Yes Carol. I often still get FD headaches, but haven’t been while doing ADF. I also get a very sore jaw and think they are both caused by the tension of concentrating on fasting. I don’t have this problem if I am out and about, or occupied for many hours by something enthralling. P

Carolannfud, what are you eating on your NFD? If it’s biased towards a lot of carbs your body may be resistant to using fat for fuel on FD’s. Your brain wants glucose and it signals it’s unhappiness with a headache.

When I stopped eating higher GI carbs like grains and added more non starchy veggies and fats headache on water fast days went away.

Yes, that’s a good point Purple, I will try and note if there’s a difference when I’m busy on a FD. Thankyou.

Thanks diver dog, I had wondered if it was withdrawal symptoms but my non FD diet is not carb loaded. Any as my non FD diet seems to be working well I am loathe to make changes. Having said that I’ve just realised quite often on the weekend (I fast Monday’s) I do have an increased carb intake. I’ll keep an eye on that and see if it helps.

    😊

    Hi Carol:

Next to too little water, the second most likely cause of a headache is lack of salt, especially if you have been drinking too much water. The excess water not only unnecessarily taxes your kidneys, it leaches water soluble vitamins (like C & Bs) and minerals (like salt) from your body. The third most likely cause is caffeine withdrawal.

    Hi Carolann,

If I feel a bit headachy I usually have some marmite or miso and that does the trick. For me at least it’s usually lack of salt.

I had started getting headaches when I fasted in the office, but I realised that my mug in work is smaller than at home, and the office temperature is always set to tropical, so I think I was getting a bit dehydrated.

So I will be fasting again tomorrow. I succumbed to pancakes at lunchtime…savoury…but I did eat too many. 😊

Mmm thats interesting…..too much or too little water…
Think I’ll try water with a bit of Vegemite next FD and see what happens.

    Thanks for suggestions!

Not Marmite, Carol? ( yes, still here, just stirring…)
