  • I guess we all try to justify our own distructive behaviours Herm. 😯
My brothers gave me a cigarette at 8. It was SO disgusting, I never touched another. They did me a favour.

My skin hurts SO much if it gets burnt, I simply have to avoid sun. I’m built to live in Scotland ☺

I never had to diet…I could eat whatever I wanted, right up until I hit my 40s. I chose my dad carefully ☺ and just naturally knew when to stop eating.

I never had alcohol until into my 20s. Not for any particular reason. I simply didn’t drink anything but water. By the time I took up drinking wine, I had kids, so was limited. I was in my 40s before circumstances and finances allowed regular imbibing. (I can see a pattern here ☺)

Re other drugs, I hung around with people who used all sorts of odd things…they just never appealed to me.
    I suppose I was lucky. Still am. ☺☺ P

Lovely catching up with posts. I chuckled over the political commentaries as of course I’d the benefit of hindsight. So agreed with them though. I’m not doing well with fasting at the mo, do well till evening then strong irresistible urges for cheese or peanut butter, taking me up to 800 cals. I’m so busy at the mo, my eye is off the ball, but at least I’m maintaining. Just off to a concert tonight, then back for pond building, then off to France. My stepD and husband have been remodelling my garden, turning a sloping site into terraces with long shallow steps and some raised beds. They found two colonies of newts! So we’re making a wildlife pond with a nice little beach for creatures and some planting that I hope will help dragon or damsel flies. So Ill keep my eye on what you’re all up to but will be off 5:2 for a few weeks! Hope I can continue to maintain. I bought some rather tight jeans in anticipation of further loss! They’ll warn me if weight starts upwards. πŸ˜’. Enjoy the warmth all those that can!

    Hi Apricot
Some people call them the “trousers of truth!”. ☺
How I envy your line, “then off to France “. For me, that would be a 23 hour plane trip ++
Fasted again today. It really is easier doing it regularly than a big gap between fasts. Hopefully some fat goes. P

I hope you haven’t turned into a little grease spot, Herm? 35 in London! Woohoo! P

You’re right about the trousers of truth. Especially when they’re fresh from the laundry and you have to lie down to do the zip up!

Yes, I had a similar pattern and kicking over the traces in my 40s started the weight gain. Took no notice till it was too far to be an easy loss. And with a big gap between fasts you lose the routine. I had the wrong foods in. Well, it now will have to wait. Might leave the jeans behind!😊

It was 30 in the SW of England today. London must have been tough unless you’re a salamander. Too humid.

I’m still alive and well, P, having spent much of yesterday in air-conditioned places. It was the annual theatre outing with my gorgeous great-nephew, to see Sunny Afternoon, the amazing – and exceedingly loud – musical about the Kinks, who originated in this very same neck of the woods and who still have their studio a few doors away from us. So first it was a nice cool dark pub for a pre-show drink, nice cool theatre and then nice cool Pizza Express. And outside the rush hour even the Tube was bearable.

Right now, I’m in our loft office where it’s still uncomfortably warm, but temperatures are about to drop to the mid-20s, which will be a lot easier to bear.

Ah! The Kinks! Now THAT’S quality music from an Autumn Almanac! You Really Got Me on a Sunny Afternoon with Lola. Where Have All the Good Times Gone, All Day and All of the Night? Gone with a Dedicated Follower of Fashion and Plastic Man watching a Waterloo Sunset in Victoria. ☺☺

I did another easy 24 hour fast yesterday. I just need to master the non-fast daytimr eating now! When I’m in the office, I take my food for the day and that’s all I will eat. When I work at home it’s too easy to go back to the fridge…or to put slightly too much food on my lunch plate to begin with. I’m wondering if making a packed lunch even when I work at home would make me more disciplined.

The hot sunny weather has certainly moved things along in the garden. The strawberries are nearly over, thank God, but the raspberries are ripening. We have an unruly wild stand, probably 10 x 10m, in a rough paddock. The hens follow me, some stand around waiting for me to throw fruit to thrm, and some know to jump up to pick their own from bent over canes. They disappear into the undergrowth, but you hear the little thuds as they land and see the raspberry canes shaking. Or at least I’m hoping it’s the hens…!

    Hi P and Hermaj,

While I’m typing slowly with one finger you’re chatting away!

Hermaj, we dropped back to mid 20s yesterday and today probably only 20ish. Much more comfortable! 18-20 and sunny all summer would suit me. I’m not a sunbather, and don’t want it too hot for physical labour or exercise…

    Ditto Happy
I’m doing 3 fasts this week as bracket creep seems to be happening. I agree, the fasts aren’t the hard part. I know we are eating the right food (low carb, full fat) but portion size is the issue. What’s more frustrating is that Mr P has not gained anything this winter, while I have crept up to my trigger point. Grrrr…I’m skipping breakfasts while he gets to eat on NF days.
Your berries sound wonderful. We are only getting rubbish from Queensland now. Not worth buying. P

It does seem, whatever age, that men find it easier to lose/ maintain weight. Life’s just not fair!

I did worry for a while that my non-fast day eating might be worse since I’ve been fasting. But actually I think my non-fast days are a healthier lighter version of every day pre-5:2, it’s just that the intermittent periods of 24 hour fasting throw them into such stark relief.

The berries are nice, some might be falling into my mouth too as I pick them πŸ™‚

“One for Happy, one for the chooks, one for the basket. ..” What about Grumpy? 😦

    Hi Happy,
According to the Beeb forecast, those mid-20s are heading this way, which is excellent news.
    P. The show included all of the above and ended with the whole audience on its feet singing along to Lola. Interesting demographic. Lots of mature peeps – like me – who were there when it was all happening. Happy memories of very, very short skirts (aka pussy pelmets) and those lovely white, elasticated boots. It appeared that Ray Davis himself showed up last week and took to the stage for the finale. He’s often seen wandering along our street looking distinctly raddled, a grand old man of rock.

Hmmm…I wonder what 72 year old Ray Davies looks like now? Some have weathered well and others not so. How Keith Richards is still alive and Mick has just fathered another child beggars belief!

Keith Richards has been pickled. It’s life, but not as we know it.

Grumpy will be enjoying his berries later in the year, fermented!

    Lucky Grumpy πŸ˜†πŸ˜†πŸ·πŸ·πŸ·

Only a couple of weeks ago I saw Ray Davis emerging from the Kinks’ studio on our street and he ain’t looking good. Skinny, ashen-faced, a bit past his sell-by date, in a lot worse nick than me and Him Indoors, both of similar vintage. But I’d hazard a guess inside his head he’s still about 30, firing on all cylinders, writing, composing, touring, winning awards.

And he and the band continue to inspire young musicians – like my gorgeous great-nephew, commended by the examiner for his “BB King vibrato”, in a blues set piece in a recent exam, who escorted me to Sunny Afternoon. He and his band-mates name the Kinks as one of their influences along with Hendrix and Metallica.

Ah, Metallica. ….there was a time when DS1 and DS2 had bedrooms across the landing in a smallish house, and would play Metallica in one, Iron Maiden in the other, at the same time and both at top volume, usually while I was listening to someone’s woes in the study below or trying to write an address….Happy days – thank God they’re over!!!

The day the electric guitar left home reduced the decibels in our house too. The old boy’s acoustic is far more mellow…more Dylan, Cohen, than punk ☺
Planning another fast today, but have been awake half the night with my mind racing. πŸ˜•πŸ˜•

I’ve not been posting lately as a lot of other stuff has demanded my attention. However, the horribly hot humid weather, coupled with a certain amount of stress, has knocked off another kilo.
Although it’s taken 3 1/2 years and several long – dishearteningly long – plateaux, almost one fifth of me has “gone the way of all flesh”, so to speak. I’ve now shed nearly 20% (19 point something) of my starting weight, which I believe is seen as a tremendous health boost. Maybe someone out there who knows about these things can confirm this. Five or six more kilos wouldn’t go amiss, but that requires a miracle. Meanwhile, I’m more than a little chuffed with the result so far.
BTW P, did/does your old boy include Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in his repertoire? I heard it for the very first time a couple of years ago watching Shrek 1, but it’s been a favourite ever since.

Rightly so to be proud of your achievement Herm. Of course it has health impacts ☺☺☺ Fantastic work, mate.
Mr P tends to do more “wrist slashing” Cohen songs. I personally adore KL Lang’s version. My daughter argues for Jeff Buckley’s. Quite a heated topic in this family, but a fabulous song.
We saw Leonard perform about 4 years (?) ago. Staggeringly good! He is so energised and flexible. He puts most of us, young things, to shame.
I’m suffering the results of falling over last week. Bruises and aching joints everywhere. Not enough fat to protect the bones when I crash down. 😑
    Ah well….time wounds all heels!!!! πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ P

Ah, now that’s a problem isn’t it Purple – not having enough padding! 😊

I hope those bruises heal quickly.

I’m a massive fan of Hallelujah. My favourite is KD langs but I am going to look for the Jeff Buckley because I don’t believe I’ve heard that.

My husband is a massive Cohen fan and through default I have become a bit of a fan too. We travelled to Sydney to see him perform.

Congrats on the further weight loss hermaj. Slowly but surely. All sensible weight loss is good for our health. Being overweight is one of the most significant contributors to morbidity and mortality.

We leave tomorrow on the annual pilgrimage to Canada. Am seriously debating buying travel scales. I think scales would stop me fretting so much about wether I am putting on weight but then I think will I fret more if I do put some on? Does that make sense?

Does anyone know if Bay actually came back from Hawaii? 😊

    Hi Carol
Escaping the winter weather? Lucky girl!
The travel scales give you peace of mind when away. Don’t leave home without them!
Haven’t heard from Bay. I think she is also in Canada.
    Have a wonderful trip. ☺ P

Nope, Bay never came back, Carol. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜¬πŸ˜¬

After Hawaii we went to Canada and we are now in Brooklyn. Fabulous and exhausting. πŸ·πŸ·β˜•οΈβ˜•οΈπŸ˜πŸ˜
We have averaged 20,000 steps a day and fall into bed each evening with gratitude.

Have not missed the Winter and am really enjoying the heat. Visited the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian Design museum, the American Musum of Natural History, the City of NY Museum and the NY City Transport Museum, all fantastic places. And We have seen Coney Island and New Jersey and walked miles all over Brooklyn. We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, easily the worlds most attractive bridge.

NY is a wonderful place. Best Buy was a weekly Metro Travel Card that allows unlimited travel. This means we walk for at least 20,000 steps and then clamber aboard the subway and gratefully grab a seat to ride home.

I have eaten and drunk lots and have put on weight. I will fast and do lots of floor scrubbing when I get home. πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰. Thanks for the shout out Happy. 🌞🌞🌺🌺

Congratulations Hermaj, you amazing person. What will power and a great result for all your perseverance. πŸŒ·πŸŒ·πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŒΊπŸŒΊ

    Cheers, all, Bay πŸŒžπŸŒžπŸ˜„πŸ˜„

Great travel log Bay! Sounds as if you don’t want to come back until at least October. The floor scrubbing can wait that long πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰ P

    Hi Purple

Should be back in Oz by mid August and then we have commitments interstate until October, so that takes care of Winter. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

    Cheers, Bay

PS It was a relief to have no internet while in Canada, weird at first, then truly liberating.

    Sounds marvellous Bay! πŸŒ΄πŸπŸ—½

Hermaj, great news on the gradual shrink!

Bay, great to hear more of your travels, sounds fantastic. Sounds like you’ll have avoided several months of cleaning by the time you get home πŸ˜€

I don’t know KD Lang’s version, and I’m not a Cohen fan. My vote goes to Jeff Buckley 🎸

No fasting for me this week while on leave. I’ve been out walking most days, including a 20 km walk today in the mountains, rising to maybe 650m max. I may have undone the benefits with a few too many biscuits 😊

Thanks, Happy and Carolann. Not a bad result for the metabolically challenged. πŸ™‚ Ideally I’d like to see the back of another 5 kilos or so, but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve also defied the quack and Big Pharma by very gradually weaning myself off the BP meds. How come the readings are so much lower since I stopped taking the pharmaceutical sweeties?

Jeff Buckley’s is my favourite version of Hallelujah, but KD Lang runs him a close second and Rufus Wainwright isn’t bad either. Various versions can be found on youtube. As for Cohen himself, both he and Dylan write fabulous songs with wonderful lyrics, but I wish to God they wouldn’t sing them.

Thank you too, Bay. You are currently in one of my favourite places on the planet and Canada is somewhere I’m waiting to explore. It’s so huge, though. Where does one begin?

The bp thing is strange Herm. It seems there are two distinct reasons for high bp….environmental and inherent.
Take away stress and overweight and some people can successfully give up bp meds. However, some of us, even with these variables removed, chose the wrong parents.
I was able to reduce my bp meds right down after I reached my goal weight, but a year later, it has risen back up. I monitored myself over a 3 week period, many times a day, and conceded that I will need to continue with the medication. I am not a gambler and having stroke is something I simply don’t want to risk. Hypertension is the silent killer. No warning signs. 😑
On a cheerier note…noone but Dylan can song Positively 4th Street!!! 😊
    P

Understood, P. We monitor ourselves at home several times a week. Correction, OH has to monitor me ‘cos I’m too ham-fisted to fit the cuff round my upper arm. But the results are consistently good. Certainly, if there were a sudden or even a gradual upturn, I would have to go cap-in-hand to the quack and receive a mega telling off. And probably a lecture about being overweight, despite the 20% loss.

    I’ll have a listen to Positively 4th Street. πŸ™‚

Didn’t mean to scare you, Herm. Keep an eye on it, like everything else, we are living organisms. Things change. Good luck.
I’m surprised you don’t know Positively 4th Street. It’s one of the best songs ever. Written to Joan Baez. The words say it all ☺☺
    P

    Hi all

Very quiet on this thread. Hope you are all well. We are back home to the most delightful weather with sunny 15C and blue skies. Violets in the garden are a carpet of purple, plus jonquils and camellias are in flower, and the lemon tree has lots of ripe lemons. 🌺🌺

First fast in 8 weeks going very well, so far 21 hours with no food. Have put on quite a bit of wheat weight while away. Over indulging in high quality pastries and breads. Looking forward to a regular pattern of wheat free 5:2 over the next few weeks. πŸπŸβ˜•οΈβ˜•οΈ

    Cheers, all. Bay. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

    Welcome home Bay!

Good to hear that you can slip back into fasting after such a long break.

So is it spring at home or still winter? It’s supposedly summer here, but it’s a bit unreliable in northern England….

I’m currently just over my upper maintenance limit, after just one week’s holiday, and despite two fasts last week πŸ™ I’ve had a stinking cold all week and not done any exercise, so I’m hopeful I’ll be able to drop the weight when I get my lungs back!

    Thanks, Happy
It feels like Spring, but we always have a late very cold spell. Off to bed now after a good fast day.
    Cheers, Bay πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

Hi Bay et al, I’m fasting here in Canada. Been enjoying the odd cake or two so thought it about time to get back into the swing! Had 6 almonds at 6pm and about to have some salmon and salad for tea.
Think I fasted about 23 hours. Lots of emotional eating while I’m here 😞 🍁🍁🍁

    Hi Carol
It is beautifully sunny here today, and Spring is on its way. We had a lovely time in Newfoundland and NY and Hawaii. Today is my second fast day after getting home. Trying to last without food until later in the day. It feels good to be back in the saddle.
    Cheers, Bay 🌺🌺🌺🌺

    Hi Bay, Carol and Happy
You are doing well, Bay πŸ˜€
We are on a road trip north. Just spent a few days “off grid”…marvellous!
Fasting today as Monday was in a cabin in the bush with a roaring fire and full cooking facilities. Too good to miss food! Tonight is a basic motel, so much easier to not eat 😊 Don’t you love this flexibility?
Great weather, gorgeous sunny days, cool nights. P

P, that sounds just like our weather at the moment. Summer has been a bit stop-start (I guess that’s climate change, whatever Malcolm Roberts says πŸ™‚ ) but we’ve got sunshine and warmth this week. Yeay!

Bay, what are you doing to occupy yourself while fasting? You can’t surely be cleaning? Your house simply caanot he that dirty again already!!

Carol, good to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the emotional eating. At least we have the tools now to rectify any damage done on the scales!

I’m fasting again today. I’m holding steady at 0.5kg above my maintenance range. There’s a demon on my shoulder saying ‘why worry, it’s still a healthy weight for you’… but the angel says ‘hmm, it’s a slippery slope…and you’ve still got the menopause to come you know…’

    Happy fasting all.

    Happy

Well done on not letting your weight blow out. πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰β˜€οΈβ˜€οΈ

We have a dog, so there is always some floor cleaning to do. I’ve been paying bills and reading, and generally putting myself and the paperwork in order. 😏😏. Also sitting in the warm sunshine.

I had some homemade vegetable soup mid afternoon, and a few almonds. Fasted for 20 hours today. Fasted for 23 hours on Sunday, and havent had any wheat products on any day since Saturday. Looking forward to fresh salmon and green beans for dinner.

    Cheers, Bay 🌺🌺🌺

There’s only one way on a slippery slope, Happy!
We paddled on a beautiful river, all alone, yesterday, and saw quite a number of platypus popping up to breathe, then diving again. I’ve never seen them in the wild before…such a thrill! It shows the water quality in inland NSW is pretty good.
We have walked miles this afternoon to avoid the eating dragon…saw another platypus here, on a different town, too!
    Hold strong fasters πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ P
    Edit: We crossed over, Bay!
I did 4 fasts in a row last week…3 x 24 hours, one 20 hour. Surprisingly easy to do.
24 hour one today and, like you, salmon and salad to look forward to.

What would we do without salmon and salad??! Good to see a flurry of new activity – and especially that everyone’s doing so well.
I finally had my big surgery last Friday. Apparently the op went well, and I was extremely well looked after. Now home, with several kinds of mega painkiller and multiple alarms set on my phone, to remind me which to take when. I look about 6 months pregnant because my abdominal organs are all bruised and swollen (and full of gas, gradually escaping – lovely!) but weight is stable. Off fasting for the moment, but a good challenge to keep super-nourished / get insides working / maintain weight.
Sleeping a LOT! Love to all.

Excellent news Fast. Take care during your recovery. Big hugs P x

    Take care, Fast πŸŒΊπŸŒΊβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈπŸπŸ

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Fast! I know that swollen abdominal look – it does disappear in time 😊

    Happy, listen to the Angel!

You girls are fasting so much you soon won’t have a shadow! πŸ˜„

Yes, my emotional eating is the demon on your shoulder Happy. But as you say….we have the tools!

Sounds like everyone is having fun in one way or another! It’s a great life (at times 😐)

I think that some of us share a sense of humour. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„.

Tonight I watched The Katering Show. Two young women called Kate are taking the p**s out of lifestyle and food shows. Tonight they made me laugh by putting themselves on the Paleo diet, the raw food diet, and the 5:2. It’s only 10 minutes long, and they used to make the show for the Internet. It is now being screened on our ABC TV. Worth a laugh!

    Cheers, Bay 🌺🌺🌺🌺

    Hi Bay
The “Kates” are great, aren’t they? We loved the results…the cat did brilliantly on 5:2, and has a whole new life, but the girls ended up complete wrecks on paleo and raw food. They are very funny girls.
Hope your post trip fasting has gone well. We are just home after a fabulous 2 weeks of wandering along backroads in our own state. Self catered and tested plenty of local vino. No damage, but fasting today. ..the first full fast for a fortnight.
Hope all the other MCs are ticking over well. P 😊

Hi, all. I am thinking about maintenance now. Just 3lbs to go. When I last dieted, 20 years ago, I found I could not stop the weight loss. This was the F Plan and healthy eating. I ended up scrawny.

This time I’m thinking perhaps allow a little more on NFDs and try 6:1. My quick read here suggests that more of you stick to 5:2, though.

    Any advice would be appreciated. I’m 5’2″ and now at 9st 10. Target 9 &1/2. I’m 69 so don’t want thin.

    Hi Polly,

    Congratulations on your weight loss.

There are a few maintainers here around your age, but I’m you 20 years ago! And like you initially I struggled to stop losing weight once I’d reached goal. Of course it may be different for you this time round…

Intermittent fasting is very flexible, so you should be able to find a pattern that suits. If you still lose weight on 6:1 then you could always do 8:1 or 10:1 etc. You just need to play around to find what works.

I weigh myself daily, recording my Saturday weight, and use daily weight and longer-term trend to guide the need to fast. Regular weighing seems to be a common feature among successful maintainers.

I know some people don’t like scales, but they’re essential for me. I’m more of a pear than an apple so by the time my waistband feels a bit tighter I’ve gained half a stone!

I lost another 4kg once I’d reached my goal weight before I worked out how to stop losing. If you think there’s a risk you might do the same and get scrawny you could always start easing up now?

Hit my target weight in March. Been doing 6:1 since then. I operate within a 1kg window. Usually I tend to creep downward with my weight, if that’s the case I tend to eat a little more before my fast day which is a Monday. On the couple of occasions that my weight has crept up a little Ive backed off what I eat the two days prior to my fast day. Works very well.
