  • And so, here I am. Living in South Africa, one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Along with all the sunshine goes a lot of cold beer, great food and of course and office life that interferes with time available for exercise.
However, I have always believed that it’s not just exercise, it is also whatever passes over my lips.

So 2015 has delivered the 5:2 information via the interwebs and I am super happy about the info sharing going on.
I am a 46 year old female and started noticing that midlife spare tyre getting awfully big. I am on the short side and I really do not need to lug a tractor tyre around, have not need for it and therefore it has to go.

Today is my first fast day so still figuring out the do’s and dont’s. Have no scale at home, but will work with measurements, I find them to be more accurate anyway.

So if anyone has some great advice be that on food, or drinks or just in general, I am all ears.

It is the year for change! BIG change!!

Congratulations on beginning your plan. I wish you every success. I would recommend buying the book (if you haven’t already), the prices are very reasonable on Kindle. The recipe book is also a great addition to help you vary your diet and make the best choices in food.

Have you worked out your TDEE? You can use the tracker on here. http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/

I would recommend a cheap digital scale to avoid having to measure all your foods on fast days.

    What are your goals?

Hi lovercomeback, thank you for the wishes.

I am definitely trying to lose weight, and have set myself a target of 30kg’s in 22 weeks. I think that is doable once I get myself back into the exercise routine.

I am using a mobile app to track my daily calories, so on fast days 500 or under and on normal days 1 500 or under.

No I have not worked out my TDEE yet. Will go and do that right now, thank you for the link.

TDEE shows up as 1 901 so I think that 1 500 a day as a goal should be achievable.

It will be easier to maintain your weight loss long term the closer you are to the 1900kcal I think, in my mother’s experience. But, if you find 1600 is satisfying then why not. If you up your exercise you can always up your non fast calories. 1500 is quite low for a male. Any reason for picking 500kcal on fast days and not the 600kcal?

I think it is achievable to lose about 3lbs a week. But maintenance might be more important.

By all means, push on and see how you go. Is it for a particular event?

I think you would be shocked by the weight loss in men, on higher calories on fast and non fast days than you are planning.

Let me know how you get on. As one of my chief frustrations is that my mother did not follow the advice to calculate TDEE and then her calorie allowance and succeeded in shifting A LOT of weight. My father and all his golf buddies also.

However, I have begin my journey by having no more than 1600 on non fast and 500 on fast days.

Once I plateau I will adjust my fast day calories lower I think.

    All very interesting!

Sorry not sure how you worked out I was male since I mention that I am a 46 year old female in my first post.

Will that still mean I need to keep to the 1 901 per day?

No the event is my life and health. I am terrified that I might go into menopause and the longer I can delay it or the easier I can make it, I want to. Also I have become too sedentary with big changes in my life, time to take control and that time is NOW!

Sorry, I must have misread that! Oops! 1900 isn’t far off their calculations for the average female. I would say I am pretty jealous that your TDEE is allowing 1900kcal! Lucky! Haha.

I think it’s trial and error. See how you go on the 500kcal for the first couple of fast days and then switch to the lower 400 if you are not seeing the difference you need.

Congrats on the decision and I hope you achieve it soon! 🙂

    Hi Sissy and welcome:

Here are some tips, as you requested: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

Your 66 pounds in 20 weeks is probably undoable – you would have to be on about a 3/400 calorie a day diet, which is a little hard for most people. See #4 in the above post.

    Good Luck!

Yes Simcoeluv, I too think it will take longer, but I do like setting myself steep targets.

Thank you for the link, I read them all this morning but I am sure that I will often return.

So day 1 is done and done. 416 calories consumed and feeling great. Going to do a back – to – back so tomorrow will be my day 2. As mentioned, no scale at home but took all the measurements and will continue doing that every Monday.

2015 has kicked off in the right direction. Good luck to everyone else for the year and your various stages of 5:2.

How come you are jealous of my TDEE?

Hi guys, I started the diet today and stuck to under 500 calories. I’m 18, 11.7 stone and 5’5/6.. Any idea how much weight I could probably lose in 2 weeks?

    Thanks for the link simcoeluv.
Sissy, I am jealous as it comes in higher than mine, so your calorie consumption is higher. Can make a big difference! Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

Hi lush, not sure. It varies from person to person, so many factors including genetics and your body’s ideal weight. Check out your BMR and TDEE on the calculator in this thread http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/ to work out what your consumption would be on non fast days to make it most effective. Aim for 1lb per week is a good aim, and likely if your metabolism is not affected by any disorders (thyroid, diabetes etc). You will be able to maintain and keep this weight off for good at a slower pace of loss.

Lovercomeback, I will endeavour to write a bit each day, hope I have something to say for a start so started sharing here: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/my-30kg-marathon/#post-68383

Thank you for all the support and well wishes.
